According to Zenith’s Business Intelligence - Telecommunications report, telecoms advertising will grow at an average rate of 4.5% a year to 2023 as its recovers from an 8.7% decline in 2020. Telecoms adspend in the 12 key markets included in the report* will rise from US$17.8bn in 2020 to US$18.7bn in 2021, and then return to its pre-pandemic level of US$19.5bn in 2022. Smartphone sales will start to spring back this year once consumers feel more confident in their future. Consumers are becoming more willing to finance and purchase handsets independently from their network providers, giving manufacturers and retailers a greater incentive to advertise handsets themselves. Meanwhile, the networks will seek to recoup their investment in 5G licences and infrastructure through new services and more expensive data packages. All these trends will help fuel healthy growth in telecoms advertising over the next three years. Zenith predicts telecoms adspend will grow 4.7% in 2021, 4.4% in 2022 and 4.3% in 2023. Digital platforms help telecoms brands demonstrate relevance to exacting consumers Voice and data services are commoditised and functionally indistinguishable to consumers, who expect them to work flawlessly in the background and only pay attention to them when they go wrong. High-impact advertising in mass-audience media like television and radio allows telecoms companies to differentiate themselves from others through branding, and makes them more relevant to consumers by promoting their association with things consumers are passionate about, such as entertainment, sport and music. Telecoms brands therefore spend substantially more on television and radio advertising than the average brand – in 2020 they spent 42% of their budgets on television and radio, while the average brand spent 30%. But as audiences migrate online, telecoms companies are refocusing on communicating their brand narratives to mass digital audiences. Telecoms brands spend less on digital media than average (49% of their budgets went to digital channels in 2020, compared to 56% for the average advertiser), but digital advertising is also the only channel in which telecoms adspend is increasing. Zenith forecasts that telecoms brands will increase their digital adspend at an average rate of 5% a year between 2019 and 2023. By 2023, digital advertising will account for 54% of all telecoms advertising. “COVID-19 has demonstrated how dependent we are on good, fast and reliable internet connections. Telecoms companies have been the unsung heroes of the pandemic, shifting our lives online and keeping us connected to entertainment, work and commerce,” said <keyword id="10970716" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ben-Lukawski">Ben Lukawski</keyword>, Global Chief Strategy Officer, Zenith. “Their challenge is to go from being unsung to being acknowledged and appreciated for their efforts. The spread of 5G and the reality of our new-found virtual lives give telecom brands the opportunity to move into the limelight.” Telecoms brands are cutting back their spending on traditional television and radio as their reach declines, but less rapidly than brands in most other categories. Zenith forecasts that between 2019 and 2023, telecoms brands will reduce their television adspend by an average of 2.0% a year, compared to a 3.5% annual reduction across all categories. They will also reduce their radio adspend by 2.8% a year, compared to 4.1% a year for the market as a whole. India and Russia to lead telecoms adspend growth Zenith forecasts that India will be the fastest-growing market for telecoms advertising between 2020 and 2023 by some distance, with 11% annual growth. According to <keyword id="256870" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="eMarketer">eMarketer</keyword>, only 31% of the population currently has a smartphone, but thanks to the launch of low-price handsets such as the JioPhone, this proportion is rising rapidly. “The telecom sector in India in 2021 is anticipating a robust growth on the basis of an increase in tariff pricing, demand for data, growing number of mobile users and hopefully the launch of 5G in the last quarter. This will lead to a substantial increase in media investments by the key players especially on Television &amp; Digital” said <keyword id="6984953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jai-Lala">Jai Lala</keyword>, COO, <keyword id="3929120" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="zenith-india">Zenith India</keyword>. Russia is another market with relatively low (57%) but fast-growing smartphone penetration, and here telecoms adspend is forecast to rise rapidly too, by 8% a year. Most of the other markets in this report are forecast to grow by between 3% and 6% a year to 2023. The exception will be France, not because of any inherent weakness in demand, but unlike those in most markets, French telecoms brands actually increased spending in 2020 – by 6% – in response to the extra demand for data. The basis of comparison with 2023 is therefore considerably tougher. “The rollout of 5G services will allow mobile operators to supply bundled voice, data and entertainment services to the home and compete directly with landline broadband,” said <keyword id="3421269" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jonathan-Barnard">Jonathan Barnard</keyword>, Head of Forecast, Zenith. “This will spur greater competition to put together the most attractive services at the best prices and help stimulate a sustained recovery in telecoms adspend to at least 2023.” *The 12 markets included in this report are Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US, which between them account for 73% of total global adspend. The recent move by some political forces in the U.S. to continuously and groundlessly suppress foreign companies listed on the U.S. <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword>, even at the cost of undermining its own position in the global capital markets, has demonstrated that U.S. rules and institutions can become arbitrary, reckless and unpredictable."This comes after China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, said last Saturday that Trump's economic policies are an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-trump-start-new-cold-war-after-nyse-delists-companies-2021-1">"attempt to suppress China and start a new Cold War."</a>According to Dan David, founder of Wolfpack Research, a short-interest investment research firm, the NYSE is trapped between a rock and hard place. Chinese telecom stocks to be de-listed as NYSE reverses course again

The <keyword id="18750022" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-telecom-equipment-market" source="Orion">global telecom equipment market</keyword> held steady in the first half of 2023 (1H23), growing only 2 per cent, a new report has shown. According to the market research firm Dell'Oro Group, the worldwide telecom equipment revenues, excluding North America, increased by 7 per cent in the first half, supporting the thesis that the telecom equipment market remains robust outside of the US. Stable performance in EMEA, CALA, and China, combined with robust growth in the Asia Pacific region outside of China. "These results mostly align with expectations on an aggregate level, although performance by region and technology varied. After five years of expansion, during which the North American region advanced by around 50 per cent, the pendulum swung toward the negative in the first half. The decline in North America was anticipated, but the pace of the contraction was slightly faster than expected," said Research Analyst <keyword id="5506607" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="stefan-pongratz" source="Orion">Stefan Pongratz</keyword>. According to the report, wireline outperformed wireless. The analysis indicated that the collective results for the wireline-focused programmes increased by around 7 per cent in the first six months. Moreover, vendor dynamics remained mostly stable between 2022 and the first half of 2023, with a few exceptions. Telecom firm Ciena surpassed <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword>, and the gap between <keyword id="6354716" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nokia" source="Orion">Nokia</keyword> and <keyword id="6356812" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ericsson" source="Orion">Ericsson</keyword> widened, reflecting, to some extent, the technology mix between wireless and wireline. Despite ongoing efforts by the US government to limit <keyword id="6357456" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="huawei" source="Orion">Huawei</keyword>'s addressable market and access to cutting-edge silicon, the report said that Huawei continues to lead the global telecom equipment market. "This is partly because Huawei remains the #1 supplier in five out of the six telecom segments we track, and the vendor continues to dominate the market outside of North America, accounting for 35 per cent to 40 per cent of 1H23 revenues," Pongratz said. Global telecom equipment market grows 2% only in 1st half of 2023: Report

The government on Wednesday released the draft Indian <keyword id="15052971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TELECOMMUNICATION-BILL" source="Orion">Telecommunication Bill</keyword>, 2022, under which it has proposed a provision to waive off fees and penalty of telecom and internet service providers. The ministry has proposed provision for refund of fees in case a telecom or internet provider surrenders his license. "Seeking your views on the draft <keyword id="10642" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="INDIAN-TELECOM" source="Orion">Indian Telecom</keyword> Bill 2022," Telecom Minister <keyword id="7796574" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ashwini-vaishnaw" source="Orion">Ashwini Vaishnaw</keyword> said in a post on a social media platform in which he also shared the link of the draft bill. The last date for public comment on the draft is October 20. According to the draft , the central government may, "waive in part or full any fee, including entry fees, license fees, registrations fees or any other fees or charges, interest, additional charges or penalty" for any licence holder or registered entity under the telecom rules. The bill proposes to exempt "press messages that are intended to be published in India" of correspondents accredited to the central or state government from interception. However, the exemption will not be granted in case of any public emergency or in the interest of the public safety, sovereignty, integrity or security of India, friendly relations with foreign states, public order, or to prevent incitement to an offence, according to the draft. In such cases "any message or class of messages, to or from any person or class of persons, or relating to any particular subject, brought for transmission by, or transmitted or received by any telecommunication services or telecommunication network, shall not be transmitted, or shall be intercepted or detained or disclosed" to the authorized officer, according to the draft bill. DoT proposes fee, penalty waiver under new telecom rules

In another move to bump up PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ program, government has now approved 21 electronic clusters. <keyword id="46149" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-minister">Telecom Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword> pronounced the pact while speaking at the occasion of <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword> and IESA alliance for government’s Make in India and Digital India plans. 
 
"We have given in-principle approval to 21 electronic clusters and electronic manufacturing is priority area for us," said Ravi Shankar Prasad. The report published in business daily Economic Times said the alliance is aiming for IT and electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) to contribute 25% to the country's <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword> in another ten years. 
 
Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad informed that the ministry had already approved proposals worth Rs 9,000 crore among the applications worth 65,000 crore it has received so far. All the applications approved by the ministry have been accepted under the modified special incentive package scheme or MSIPS program, which aims to promote large-scale manufacturing in electronic system design and manufacturing. 
 Under the MSIPS program, a subsidy of 20% in capital expenditure is given to companies for investment in SEZs and 25% in non-SEZs. As per the reports, telecom sector, in the past few years has emerged as one of the biggest contributor in <keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword>. 
 
Prasad also said, ‘Manufacturing is crucial as it drives economic growth and revenue for the country. India's mobile penetration is expected to cross the one billion mark, but it is unfortunate that the country depends largely on imported devices.’

Telecom is the biggest contributor to FDI

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Thursday granted commercial 5G licences to the country's three telecommunications network operators and the nation's cable network giant, signalling major new investments in the world's largest mobile market amid a raging tech war with the United States. Hong Kong-listed carriers <keyword id="133270" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China-Mobile">China Mobile</keyword>, China Unicom and <keyword id="154965" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China-Telecom">China Telecom</keyword>, as well as China Broadcasting Network, were each awarded a licence to run commercial 5G services, according to MIIT. Beijing had granted licences at the end of 2018 to China's three state-owned carriers to conduct 5G trials but this is the first time it has given the go-ahead for full commercial deployment. The announcement has come amid speculation that the three network operators would be <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/enterprises/article/3012935/huawei-trade-ban-test-chinas-5g-roll-out-beijing-set-issue" target="_self">hard-pressed in pushing a large-scale 5G buildout</a> after the US government put telecoms gear provider Huawei Technologies on a trade blacklist. The US action has severed the access of Huawei, which has up to a 50 per cent share of China's telecoms equipment market, to American hi-tech suppliers, including semiconductor firms <keyword id="104695" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Qualcomm">Qualcomm</keyword> and Intel as well as software providers Google and Microsoft. The award of commercial 5G licences is "more a posture by China to make a statement that 5G will not be delayed just because of the US export ban on Huawei, giving it more bargaining power and creating stronger internal political support" according to Jefferies equity analyst Edison Lee. He said that MIIT's announcement may push the country's three telecoms network operators to accelerate their 5G mobile network roll-out plans. That move would enable China to move ahead in the global race to deploy telecoms infrastructure that will help power <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3006582/power-change-world-heres-why-us-and-china-are-fighting-over-our-5g" target="_self">the industrial internet, autonomous driving and smart cities</a>, among a range of advanced mobile applications. While South Korea, the US, Australia and the UK have launched initial commercial 5G services in the second quarter, the scale of China's market is likely to dwarf the combined size of those economies, negating any first-mover advantage. China awards 5G licences to country's major telecoms network operators and cable network giant

Local <keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Telecom">telecom</keyword> gear-makers want the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Modi</a> government to offer ‘infrastructure’ status to them. They also want <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Finance+Minister+Arun+Jaitley">Finance Minister Arun Jaitley</a> to extend tax sops under Section 35AD for domestic manufacturers. 
 
The Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association of India (TEMA) that represents local <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=telecom">telecom</a> product makers wants the government to levy a 5% cess on telcos to build a corpus for funding local telecom R&amp;D and IPR creation. 
 
Key TEMA members include Bharti Teletech, C-DoT, Bharat Electronics, Sterlite Technologies, HFCL, Lava Mobiles, ITI, Birla Ericsson Optical and United Telecom among others. 
 
"Infrastructure status to domestic <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=telecom+equipment+manufacturing">telecom equipment manufacturing</a> companies complying with PMA provisions will help the industry to benefit from the incentives," the TEMA chairman Emeritus N K Goyal has said. 
 
TEMA has also asked for an extension of tax sops under Section 35AD to local telecom gear makers complying with PMA norms. This is expected to boost local manufacturing of electronics and telecom gear. It has also sought imposition of 25% duty on telecom/ICT products under the `Others' category that are now being imported at zero duty.
