When two countries are at war, it's not the state that suffers as much as the people residing in it. This stands true for four aggrieved <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> students, who now may not get a chance to be a part of <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword>'s biggest annual fest, due to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.<br />
<br /> All four students are from Karachi, and had registered for <keyword id="397491" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Techfest">Techfest</keyword> slated to be held in December this year. Just when they were excited and busy preparing for the competition, it has come to their knowledge that the organisers of the event are giving another thought to the invitation sent to the <keyword id="63890" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistani-Students">Pakistani students</keyword> owing to security reasons.<br />

Meanwhile, the students have conveyed they have no problem visiting India. They have even applied for visas much before time fearing it might get delayed due to cross-border tensions, however, they claim there havebeen delays in accpeting the formalities. <br />
<br />
Notably, IIT techfest - IIT Bombay's science and technology festival - usually gets about 1.65 lakh footfalls in three days, and security is a prime concern. Similar controversies during fest season have taken place before as well. Students at IIT Bombay claim that a band from Pakistan was invited for the festival two years ago, but it was not able to perform due to fear of the crowds.<br />

Going by the past, the organizers are unsure of whether the Pakistani participants will be welcomed by the crowds at the fest this time around, and if not, whether they will be able to handle security all by themselves. Also, with MNS threatening Pakistani actors to go back to their country, the college fears getting caught in political controversy around the issue, due to which techfest's image could take a beating. <br />
<br />
It's being said that only after having discussions with the institute and, if required, at the government level, will the committee take a final call on the Pakistani students.

IIT-B skeptical about having Pakistani teams in their biggest fest of the year as Indo-Pak tensions escalate

Mumbai, Jan 4 () India needs to strengthen its manufacturing capacity and produce quality products that will help the country achieve the USD 5 trillion economy target by 2025, former union minister Suresh Prabhu said on Saturday.
<p>He also said that exports are going to be the main driver of economic growth.
</p><p>"India today is a USD 2.5 trillion economy, and we have set a target of becoming USD 5 trillion by 2025. In this target, 50 per cent will be international trade, of which exports will be a major component," Prabhu -- who is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's sherpa for the G20 summit -- said here while addressing the 23rd edition of Techfest - Asia's Largest Science and Technology Festival.
</p><p>On road map to achieve USD 5 trillion economy objective, he said "there is a need to strengthen the country's manufacturing and produce quality products".
</p><p>"Our biggest challenge today is quality. We need to upgrade our manufacturing so that we can compete in international markets," Prabhu said, adding that now the country mainly exports merchandise, services and agri produce. 
</p><p>The former minister said that India also needs to identify the export market requirement and work towards building it. 
</p><p>"Besides manufacturing, we have identified 12 champion sectors in the services industry, which we can export. We also have the potential to export USD 100 billion agricultural produce," he opined.
</p><p>Going forward, Prabhu said, the country should look for knowledge-based exports.
</p>"We must leverage our brain capability more. We must come out with technology oriented solutions as a package, customise it according to demand. With this India could become an export hub for technology related solutions," he added.  SM  MKJ

Last year, IIT Bombay’s Techfest saw a staggering footfall of 1,65,000 enthusiasts in a span of three days. The Asia’s biggest Science and Technology Festival is back once again, with a bang.<br />

The fest will see an interesting lineup of events, lectures, panel discussion and competitions this season as well, but ‘IIT-B exhibition’ remains one of the biggest draws of this fest every year. Displaying technological marvels, the exhibition has, over the years, exposed Indians to major breakthroughs in science and technology, scientific thinking and innovation.<br />

With a theme of Space Expedition this year, the exhibition, open to all, will once again give visitors a peek into innovations in the field of space research.<br />

Mind-controlled drones from the US, Morphofunctional drones — which mimic actions of living creatures — from Switzerland, ISRO’s launch vehicles used for space missions like Chandrayan and Mars Orbiter will be a part of the fest. Each one of these will highlight the fundamental research and the technologies developed at IIT Bombay.<br />
<br /> A working prototype of the droid, which first appeared in last year’s <keyword id="61596" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Star-Wars">Star Wars</keyword>: The Force Awakens, will also be one of the technological marvels to be exhibited. It has been prepared by students of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in Russia.<br />
<br />
A Formula One racing car and an underwater vehicle built by IIT-B students will be on display. Visitors will also get a peek into the data received from Pratham, Mumbai’s first student satellite launched in September.<br />
<br />
Another attraction will be hearing India's first spaceman, Rakesh Sharma, and Isro chairman AS Kiran Kumar interact with students. This is the second time in three years that Sharma will participate in TechFest—he had earlier visited the campus in 2013.<br />
<br /> Bedabrata Pain, a <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NASA">Nasa</keyword> scientist-turned-film director, and Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, former Isro chairman, will also speak at TechFest. Pain had directed the National Award-winning film, 'Chittagong'.<br />

On the exhibition front, some of the highlights of last year included Jinn Bot from Switzerland, who showcased the first 3D printed walking humanoid robot, which made heads turn.<br />
<br /> NASA Chondrobot from Bangladesh was an automated robot which is capable of mining in lunar environments. In others, the Dutch Nao Team from Netherlands were present which showed off autonomous football playing Nao <keyword id="16719" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="robots">robots</keyword> from RoboCup.<br />
<br />
Other exhibits included a Poker Robot from Hungary, All Terrain Rescue and Relief Robot from Bangladesh and Minirobots from South Korea.<br />

Apart from robotics, there were many artists present at the event too. Afishal from the United Kingdom, who is known to be the father of a unique technology for visual DJ drums showcased his talent for the first time in India. Some of the setups also included an All-Terrain vehicle, laser tag, 9D simulator, aerodrums, drona, F1 simulator, flying simulator, paintball, bungee run, BMX bikes, 3D chess, quilling and cards tricks workshops too.

The session, "The Shape of Things to Come," is part of the <a href="https://techfest.newyorker.com">New Yorker's TechFest conference</a>. </p><p>The British-born designer has kept a lower profile in recent years, but he's still a massively important person at Apple, and previously led the design team responsible for the look and feel of every major Apple product, including the iPhone and the iPad.</p><p>Ive's talk on Friday comes after his appearance in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4wEI5zhHB0">promotional video for the iPhone X</a>, and a lengthy interview with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-what-jony-ive-looks-for-when-hiring-apple-designers-2016-3">Charlie Rose in 2016</a>.</p><p>The New Yorker isn't livestreaming Ive's talk, but Business Insider will cover it live as it happens at 1 P.M ET.  </p><p> </p><p> </p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple's iPhone X, which hits stores in November, took five years to develop, Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive said on Friday.</p><p>The device's new design, which eliminates the home button in favor of a screen that takes up nearly the entire front of the phone, was the result of a development process full of failures, Ive said during an onstage interview at the New Yorker TechFest conference. </p><p>"I mean, the phone we just announced a couple of weeks ago, the iPhone X, that technology is something we'd been working on for five years. And we had prototypes," Ive said, either referring to the iPhone X design or its new facial recognition feature, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-new-details-iphone-x-facial-recognition-works-2017-9">Face ID</a>. </p><p>"There's a tendency, and of course there is, and I understand it, with the benefit of hindsight, all of it seems inevitable," Ive said. "But for 99% of the time, it didn't work for us. For the vast majority of the development cycle, all we had were things that failed. As technology continues to transform Wall Street, this handholding has been viewed as one of the safest from automation. </p><p>At Morgan Stanley, however, robots are being used to support human advisers with these types of tasks, said Andy Saperstein, co-head of the New York-based bank's wealth management unit. </p><p>Saperstein, speaking at the Deutsche Bank Global Financial Services conference on Tuesday, said Morgan Stanley is  leveraging artificial intelligence to generate customized emails for its 16,000 financial advisers to send to clients when the markets go berserk. </p><p>In addition to giving the firm's perspective of the market, those emails will show how a major event, like Brexit, might impact a client's overall portfolio.</p><p>"It solves a big problem when clients call up really worried," Saperstein said.</p><p>The technology is intended to take over rote tasks for financial advisers and free them up to focus on more sophisticated client needs - not to replace flesh and blood advisers, bank executives have said. </p><p>What's striking, however, is that the robots will add their own personal touch to the financial advisers' emails. Morgan Stanley is using AI to send personalized messages to clients when the markets spiral into chaos

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Snap Chairman Michael Lynton.</p></div><p></p></div></div>NEW YORK - Former Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton finally has time to do what almost all teenagers do these days: Binge-watch Netflix.</p><p>Over a two-week period this summer, Lynton went deep down into the Netflix rabbit hole, he said at the New Yorker TechFest conference on Friday. </p><p>"I could never understand what Netflix was really, until I got stuck in bed this summer for two weeks when I was sick," Lynton said. </p><p>"And I experienced what most teenagers experience, which is I got caught in the world of Netflix," said Lynton, who stepped down from the Sony Entertainment in January.</p><p>What did he watch? </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I watched <em>everything</em>. I watched Turkish dramas, I watched - because they keep just pushing stuff at you, and just when you think you've had enough, you've tried two or three hours of one thing and they say 'you don't like that, we've got an Irish comedy here and an Iranian thing there' and on and on and on it goes.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Eventually, you pop up, say, 'I've got to watch 'Game of Thrones' which just came on HBO and then you get out from it. For the rest of the time, you're in their world, and you just wander around in their world for as long as you want ... that's pretty powerful."</p><h2>Five second warning</h2><p>As the chief executive of Sony Entertainment, Lynton oversaw several major blockbuster movies and TV shows, including the original "Spider-Man." The future of Netflix is "<span>pretty bright," Lynton told interviewer David Remnick on stage on Friday. Former Sony Entertainment CEO: 'I got caught in the world of Netflix'

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Sexual harassment lawyer Carrie Goldberg accused Google of making a late intervention to kill new revenge porn laws in the US state of New York.</strong></li><li><strong>The bill has been in the works for five years and lawmakers were due to vote on it on Wednesday, but were reportedly delayed by Google and trade body, the Internet Association.</strong></li><li><strong>Goldberg was outraged at the delay, and said Google has "victims' blood all over your hands."</strong></li><li><strong>Google and the Internet Association are yet to reply to requests for comment</strong>.</li></ul><p><br>Carrie Goldberg, a lawyer who fights online sexual harassment, has accused Google of making an eleventh-hour intervention to kill new revenge porn laws in the US state of New York.</br></p><p>The bill has been in the works in Albany, New York, for five years. It would have made the nonconsensual dissemination of sexually explicit images a misdemeanour punishable by up to a year in jail. It would also have allowed victims to sue web hosts to remove the offending images.</p><p>Lawmakers were due to vote on the bill on Wednesday, but were delayed by Google and tech trade body Internet Association, who wanted to make changes to the language, according to&#xa0;<a href="https://nypost.com/2018/06/21/new-yorks-revenge-porn-bill-dies-after-11th-hour-campaign-by-google/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Post.</a> The Senate adjourned before a vote, meaning the legislation is effectively dead until next year.</p><p>Carrie Goldberg, an attorney who has been lobbying for the laws, live-tweeted about Google and the Internet Association's last-minute intervention. First, computing is more powerful and ubiquitous from the cloud to the edge. Second, AI capabilities are rapidly advancing across perception and cognition fueled by data and knowledge of the world. Third, physical and virtual worlds are coming together to create richer experiences that understand the context surrounding people, the things they use, the places they go, and their activities and relationships.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">These technological changes represent a tremendous opportunity for our customers, our partners - everyone. The purpose of this team is to drive platform coherence and compelling value across all layers of the tech stack starting with the distributed computing fabric (cloud and edge) to AI (infrastructure, runtimes, frameworks, tools and higher-level services around perception, knowledge and cognition). To facilitate these new capabilities, we are making the following leadership changes:</p><p style="font-weight: 400;"> </p><ul style="font-weight: 400;"><li>Azure: Jason Zander is being promoted to executive vice president, Azure, and will lead this team. The Windows platform team led by Harv Bhela, Henry Sanders and Michael Fortin will join Jason's team. Windows platform is already a core part of Azure across both the cloud and edge, and this shift will enable us to accelerate our efforts to build a unified distributed computing infrastructure and application model. Roanne Sones will continue to lead our technical engagement with OEMs, ODMs and silicon vendors, and her team will also join Jason's team.</li><li>Business AI: The Customer Service, Marketing and Sales Insights teams, previously led by Gurdeep Singh Pall, will join James Phillips' Business Applications Group. I am thankful for Gurdeep's leadership in building these new AI solutions that are going to help differentiate Microsoft in this area. This is a notable example of taking research breakthroughs to start new product efforts grounded in customer needs and then mainstreaming them.</li><li>Universal Store and Commerce Platform: Eric Lockard and his team will also join the Cloud + AI Platform team to both help with our own digital transformation and add new capabilities to our business application efforts.</li><li>AI Perception &amp; Mixed Reality (MR): Alex Kipman will lead this new team, which brings together all our speech, vision, MR and additional perception capabilities into one team. This team will continue to build first-party products and the core building block cloud services for third parties on Azure. XD Huang, Yu-Ting Kuo and their teams will join this group, as well as Gurdeep's Ambient Intelligence team. Alex and team will take guidance on all AI-related areas from Harry Shum and work very closely with AI + Research (AI+R).</li><li>AI Cognitive Services &amp; Platform: Eric Boyd will lead this new team and drive our AI Platform, AI Fundamentals, Azure ML, AI Tools and Cognitive Services. Joseph Sirosh and team will join this new group. When we established AI+R nearly two years ago, our primary goal was to accelerate the adoption of AI innovations from research into product, and the changes we are making today reflect our strong progress. In fact, just yesterday I spent time at TechFest and came away inspired by all the innovations and most importantly how quickly they were making their way into our products. We will continue to drive investments in AI+R across research and AI breakthroughs that are key to our long-term success. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;"> </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">As we make technological progress we need to ensure that we are doing so responsibly. AETHER will ensure our AI platform and experience efforts are deeply grounded within Microsoft's core values and principles and benefit the broader society. Among other steps, we are investing in strategies and tools for detecting and addressing bias in AI systems and implementing new requirements established by the GDPR. Microsoft's longtime Windows boss is leaving the company amid a huge executive reorganization

<ul><li><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Apple's two most senior executives have answered questions about people overusing smartphones by suggesting they get an Apple Watch.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>Studies show that college students who don't bring their smartphone to class score a full grade higher.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>The WSJ, FT, and Guardian have all recently published long stories about how smartphones can be addictive.</strong></li><li><strong>Smartphone overuse is a growing PR problem for Apple, one they don't have a strong answer for yet.</strong>&#xa0;</li></ul><p>NEW YORK - Jony Ive, Apple's chief design officer, is clearly proud of his role in the invention of the iPhone, the device that spurred the smartphone boom, created multiple billion-dollar industries, and changed the world.&#xa0;</p><p>But he admits that too much of a good thing can be bad.&#xa0;</p><p>He pointed to "constant use" of an iPhone as one example of iPhone misuse during a public talk at the New Yorker TechFest on Friday, after interviewer David Remnick pressed him about if he ever felt ambivalent about inventing the iPhone.&#xa0;</p><p>Does Ive check his email and texts constantly, like many of us feel like we have to on our iPhones?&#xa0;</p><p>"With my new [Apple] Watch, I tend to not," he said.&#xa0;</p><p>His solution to the ever-increasing problem of device overstimulation - get another device made by Apple - directly echoes how Apple CEO Tim Cook handled <a href="http://fortune.com/2017/09/11/apple-tim-cook-education-health-care/">a similar question asked by Fortune</a>, which asked what he thought about the fact that iPhones could be a tool of "bad social behavior, like distractedness and children who stare for too long into a screen?"&#xa0;</p><p>"Our whole premise is to infuse our products with humanity," Cook said, before seguing directly into a sales pitch: "So if you think about what the Watch does ... it allows you to have a curated level of connection without being absorbed in it."</p><p>To me, Cook and Ive's answers are distinctly unsatisfactory - and Cook's is unusually unclear for him and jargon-heavy.</p><p>While neither executive is denying that there's a growing distraction problem created by smartphones, which Apple inspired, neither executive wants to really dwell on the issue.&#xa0;</p><p>The solution to a problem created by an Apple product should not be another Apple product - one that, in my experience testing an Apple Watch over the past three weeks, actually has contributed to my level of device distraction. (Apple Watch: Buzz. You've hit your move goal! Buzz. You've received a text message! Buzz. Here's a headline: Trump White House to repeal...)</p><h2>Starting to become obvious</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The negative externalities associated with how addictive and entertaining smartphones are is starting to become obvious. If you live in a city, for example, you're probably used to seeing "smartphone neck" - people buried in their iPhones on the subway and on the sidewalk.</p><p>The problem is clear to parents who sit down to dinner with their kids only to have them buried in Snapchat and "Clash Royale" the entire time.</p><p>It's clear to iPhone users who turn like Pavlov's dog any time they hear the iPhone notification sound, even when it comes from someone else's phone.&#xa0;</p><p>Eventually, Apple is going to have to come up with a clear and coherent answer to questions about iPhone overuse. It's going to be asked more and more of Apple executives at every public occasion.</p><p>Apple is fortunate right now, in that it's not facing the same level of scrutiny around&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-is-fighting-fake-news-2017-8">regulation and fake news issues</a> that its Silicon Valley neighbor Google and Facebook are. Apple is good at privacy and security, and it doesn't sell many ads at all.&#xa0;</p><p>But perhaps smartphone addiction is the big public-relations problem starting to appear on Apple's horizon: What can it do about the fact that its products are so good that its customers want to use them all the time?&#xa0;</p><h2>Over half of iPhone owners can't imagine life without it</h2><p>There's a lot of data about the increasing importance of a smartphone in the modern world - in one 2015 Gallup survey, 52% of iPhone owners agreed that they "can't imagine life without my smartphone," and 42% of smartphone owners would say that they would feel anxiety if they didn't have their phone for a day.&#xa0;</p><p>That stat was highlighted as part of <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-smartphones-hijack-our-minds-1507307811">a recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal</a> by Nicholas Carr, which claimed that smartphones "hijack" people's minds.&#xa0;</p><p>An incomplete survey of study findings cited by Nicholas Carr:&#xa0;</p><ul><li>When someone's phone beeps or buzzes during a task, their work gets sloppier.</li><li>When a smartphone rings but it can't be picked up, people's blood pressure spikes and their pulse quickens.&#xa0;</li><li>When researchers left subjects' phones in plain view, they did significantly worse on tests.&#xa0;</li><li>A University of Chicago researcher says that the "integration of smartphones into daily life" appears to cause a "brain drain.&#xa0;</li><li>A <span>University of Arkansas</span> study found that students who didn't bring their phones to class scored <em>a full letter-grade higher</em>.&#xa0;</li></ul><p>Carr concludes:&#xa0;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Phone makers like Apple and Samsung and app writers like Facebook and Google design their products to consume as much of our attention as possible during every one of our waking hours, and we thank them by buying millions of the gadgets and downloading billions of the apps every year."</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">...</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"<span>As strange as it might seem, people's knowledge and understanding may actually dwindle as gadgets grant them easier access to online data stores"</span></p><p><span>The essay was widely praised by figures who see their lives in the studies cited, <a href="https://twitter.com/ariannahuff/status/916423343020085248">including Ariana Huffington</a>, who has been loudly making the claim that smartphones are hurting our ability to sleep.&#xa0;</span></p><h2>'Me and my phone, we are best friends, I'm closer to my phone than family'</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The fact that smartphones have downsides is clear from anecdotal evidence, as well.&#xa0;<p>One visceral example of these growing negative externalities is Kylie and <span>Kushana</span>, British 13-year-olds who were recently profiled as part of <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/7c972e2e-a88f-11e7-ab55-27219df83c97?mhq5j=e7">a Financial Times feature about kids and smartphones</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>"Me and my phone, we are best friends, I'm closer to my phone than family. It's the first thing I look at in the morning, and the last thing at night," Kushana told the Financial Times.&#xa0;</p><p>Kylie also said she feels odd without her iPhone.</p><p>"To be honest, I isolate myself when I'm at home. I'm always on my phone when I'm [there]. It's not always because I'm talking to someone, I just don't feel right without it," Kylie told the newspaper. "So I hang out on the couch with my phone and my headphones. I don't mind talking to real people as long as I have my phone next to me."&#xa0;</p><p>At one school in London, most students have an iPad by the time they're eight years old, and get their first smartphone when they become teenagers, the Financial Times reported, which is when "addictive attachment" starts.&#xa0;</p><p>Of course, smartphones aren't all bad - the FT reporting highlighted how the internet on a phone can help ostracized kids find a community across the world.&#xa0;</p><p>But there is a lot of evidence that the benefits of having the internet in your pocket come with significant downsides, and someone is going to have to pay for the reduction of attention.&#xa0;</p><p>Some&#xa0;ex-Silicon Valley designers&#xa0;put the blame on apps, like Justin Rosenstein, who invented the "like" button, and who asked his assistant to set up his iPhone to prevent him from downloading apps, according to a fantastic look at the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/oct/05/smartphone-addiction-silicon-valley-dystopia?CMP=share_btn_tw">issues in The Guardian</a>. It's the app makers that are optimizing feedback loops to get their users liking or retweeting more.&#xa0;</p><p>But it is increasingly&#xa0;appearing like a lot of people will put the blame on Apple as well - it's part of the price to pay for having invented the smartphone and its huge media machine that puts iPhones on billboards and commercials around the world.&#xa0;</p><p>One engineer listed on Apple's patent for the push-notification, who no longer works at Apple, shrugged off responsibility in an interview with The Guardian, saying his invention is not "inherently good or bad" and that it's a "larger discussion for society."&#xa0;</p><p>That's fair - as Ive said last Friday, any tool can be misused, especially one as powerful as an iPhone.
