<ul><li>Made-in-India drone companies are seeing a boost in sales post ban of drone imports by the government. </li><li>Consumer brands like Swiggy, Zomato, Dunzo and <keyword id="41887" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="biryani" source="Orion">Biryani</keyword> by Kilo have started launching trials for delivery by drones. </li><li>Drones are being used for defense, consumer and delivery purposes. </li><li><keyword id="1605364" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="throttle" source="Orion">Throttle</keyword>, a drone manufacturing company based out of Bangalore, witnessed a 150% growth. </li></ul>Declaring the Indian drone industry as a ‘sunrise sector’, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce, banned the import of drones in February. This has given a fillip to homegrown drone companies that are finding innovative uses for these unmanned aerial vehicles. One of India’s leading drone companies <keyword id="7785402" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="throttle-aerospace-systems" source="Orion">Throttle Aerospace Systems</keyword> (TAS) witnessed a 150% growth since the announcement. Even e-commerce companies like Dunzo, Swiggy and Zomato have ventured into the drone delivery space. Last year, Zomato acquired a drone startup <keyword id="6576859" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="techeagle" source="Orion">TechEagle</keyword> to build models that can help deliver essentials and possibly food in the near future. Medicines and Biryani from the sky <keyword id="2757817" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rattanindia" source="Orion">RattanIndia</keyword>’s drone company Neosky in association with TAS, is now planning to also supply drones for e-commerce and consumer-led initiatives besides defence. The companies have partnered with Dunzo, leading hospitals in India and even grocery delivery for Instamart, by Swiggy. At present, they are manufacturing 30 drones per month, aiming to go upto 45-50 units in the near future. Consumer brands like Swiggy recently partnered with Garuda Aerospace and Throttle to launch doorstep deliveries for groceries through Instamart. Its trials have already begun across Delhi-NCR and Bangalore. Another startup Biryani by Kilo delivered Biryani to eight influencers post the launch of eight stores in Hyderabad. As of now, the drone space in India is extensively being used in the defense sector and helping with delivery of average payload commodities. “We can see consumer led drones picking up but before that we would need designated drone corridors by the government. As of now, drones would be extensively used in the defense sector or for average load deliveries. Though it is exciting to witness food being delivered by a drone, it is further down the future,” said Sarath Chandra <keyword id="14985844" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gudlavalleti" source="Orion">Gudlavalleti</keyword>, CEO of Neosky. The government too had founded extended uses for drones. During the pandemic, a box weighing 12 kilos of medicines and 20 vials of vaccines was delivered to rural parts of Telangana through drones in an initiative called ‘Medicines from the Sky’. ‘Laws for this sector are still being made’ The government is taking active steps to boost domestic manufacturing of drones. On July 6, 2022, India’s aviation ministry released the second provisional list of 23 beneficiaries of the production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme for the drone industry. Combined annual sales turnover of PLI beneficiaries in the drone industry reached ₹3.19 billion in 2021-22 from ₹880 million the previous year. “A welcome change by the government was to stop drone imports which has boosted Make In India drone companies. Dividing India’s airspace into Red, Green and Amber zones has also helped. But laws for this sector are still being made as it is very new,” said Gudlavalleti. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has divided the Indian airspace into three zones- Green (no permission required), Amber (controlled airspace) and Red (no drones allowed). The government also launched a DigitalSky platform in January 2022 for verification of Made in India drones. The drone defender Through small steps, the Indian government is also opening the door for commercial use of drones during disaster management and even economic mapping. Beginning April 2022, all drone operators have been allowed to promote secure operations without needing multiple approvals by possessing a valid UIN. Throttle is one such beneficiary. Be it engaging in a banter with other brands online or attempting to deliver food from the skies, the Gurugram-based company has never shied away from trying out new things. Recently, Zomato introduced the feature to let users schedule their food orders up to two days in advance. Founder and<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/zomato-will-absorb-around-280-paytm-employees-ceo-deepinder-goyal-says/articleshow/112738459.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank"> CEO Deepinder Goyal </a>announced the rollout of this feature across major cities including Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Jaipur. The new scheduling option aims to provide greater convenience for users, allowing them to plan their meals ahead of time. The feature is making headlines and is expected to solve people’s woes of not getting their food orders on time. But this isn’t the first time that Zomato has taken on an experiment to try and solve a larger problem. In the past, there have been many instances where the food-delivery giant tried something unheard of. Let us take a look at some of these instances here. <h2>1. Intercity Legends: A culinary journey</h2> In an ambitious attempt to bring the diverse flavours of India to users’ doorstep, Zomato launched the 'Intercity Legends' feature. The service aimed to satisfy a growing appetite for unique food experiences and explore regional delicacies from places like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. After a period of operation, the service was suspended in April and briefly relaunched with a revised model focusing on pre-stocked items. Blinkit, a startup known for its 10-minute grocery delivery service, allowed Zomato to enter the burgeoning quick commerce market. The acquisition was part of Zomato’s broader strategy to expand beyond food delivery and capture a significant share of the grocery and convenience sector. Today, Blinkit has evolved from a grocery app into a comprehensive platform offering everything from electronics and stationery to skincare products. This acquisition has proven to be a valuable asset, aligning with Zomato’s vision of providing a one-stop solution for various consumer needs. <h2>4. Food delivery via drones: Aiming for the skies</h2> One of Zomato’s most ambitious experiments involved drone delivery. In 2018, the company acquired the Lucknow-based aerospace company TechEagle to advance its drone delivery capabilities. CEO Deepinder Goyal had said at the time that drones are essential to reducing delivery times from 30.5 minutes to 15 minutes, as road transport is inefficient for fast delivery. Then in 2019, the company made headlines for successfully testing a hybrid drone that carried a 5 kg payload over a distance of 5 km in just 10 minutes. During the test, the drone reached a top speed of 80 km/h. The delivery was a non-commercial trial. However, in 2020, Zomato parted ways with TechEagle and reports said that the separation was amicable. During the same year, Zomato also received permission from the DGCA to begin testing drone delivery but not much has happened on that front. <h2>5. Infinity dining: Unlimited food and drinks</h2> The Infinity Dining feature was another bold experiment by Zomato designed to enhance dining experiences for its Gold members. Launched in three cities, this feature offered unlimited food and drinks at select partner restaurants for a fixed price. The initiative aimed to encourage more people to dine out and enjoy a unique value-driven experience. However, the feature faced backlash from partner restaurants, which protested against the deep discounts and operational issues it created. In response to the feedback, Zomato decided to pause Infinity Dining in 2019. A company spokesperson mentioned at the time, "We received a range of feedback about Infinity Dining, and have paused it as we would incorporate the feedback." Zomato’s journey shows its willingness to embrace experimentation and innovation. The ‘Himachal Pradesh <keyword id="14136397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drone-policy-2022" source="Orion">Drone Policy 2022</keyword>’ was approved by the chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, who said, “The policy envisions creating a holistic drone ecosystem built upon the foundation of Governance and Reforms Using Drones (GARUD).” With this new drone policy, Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in the country to formally acknowledge the public use of drones. Himachal’s drone policy mainly focuses on creating drone-enabled technology, creation of manpower through the establishment of training schools, startup and innovation schemes, and more. The policy aims to propagate the use of drone-enabled technology in different sectors such as defence, transport, health, agriculture and more. Himachal Pradesh becomes the first Indian state to approve a policy for drones

In the run, the drone covered a distance of 5 kilometres in about 10 minutes, with a peak speed of 80 kmph, carrying a load of 5 kgs. “The only possible way to reduce the average 30.5 minutes to 15 minutes is to take the aerial route – roads are not efficient for very fast delivery. We have been working towards building sustainable and safe delivery technology and with our first successful test, food delivery by drones is no longer just a pipe dream,” said Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO, Zomato. The company said that the drone has inbuilt sensors and an onboard computer to sense and avoid static and dynamic objects, enabling autonomous flights. “They are also capable of taking off vertically like a helicopter, transiting to an airplane mode to cover the distance and then switching back to helicopter mode for vertical landing without requiring any airstrip,” said Zomato. Zomato had acquired TechEagle innovation, a drone startup in December 2018, leading to their experiments with drones. The government too has been paving way for the entry of drones. In 2016, the government announced a new draft policy, under which it proposed to set up a dedicated drone corridor, create drone ports and allow 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in manufacturing the remotely piloted aircraft in the country. This policy also hinted at making room for <keyword id="7749593" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aerial-delivery">aerial delivery</keyword> of goods in India. However, even after the legalization of the drones (as a ban was lifted), drones still fall in the gray area in terms of government policy. Goyal said that regulatory hurdles are not trivial, and the government’s concerns need to be looked at from various points of view, even as the technology is ready to fly. Recently, food tech unicorn Zomato had acquired TechEagle innovation, a drone startup, which fuelled rumours that the company will soon be experimenting with aerial food delivery. “Drones will be an integral part of our lives be it for last mile delivery, security, 3D mapping, agriculture and several other use cases. Food delivery via drones will help reduce the last mile delivery leg and make the process more convenient and cost-effective. <keyword id="6370270" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unmanned-aerial-vehicles">Unmanned aerial vehicles</keyword> will significantly mitigate the delivery time while also increasing the reach,” said Vikram Singh Meena, Founder, TechEagle. Even with all the ‘supposed’ encouragement from the government in the form of favourable regulation, there are many hurdles that grapple the Indian <keyword id="4005978" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="drone-startups">drone startups</keyword>. “Some of the key challenges which still exists is the timely certification of the drones, readiness by the manufacturers and democratization of the applications, ” said Vipul Singh, CEO and Co-founder, Aarav Unmanned Systems. “Research and Development ecosystem for drones in India is lagging way behind the global ecosystem.” Globally, Amazon declared in 2013 that it will be experimenting drone delivery which sent the entire world into a frenzy. At this stage, Singh believes that Indian drone startup sector is still very small and needs extreme support from the government – which could come in in the form of a drone VC fund, more pilot projects, skill development programs, financial support for working capital, and expedited development of certification and testing centers, among others. He added that with the introduction of regulation, on one hand most of the demands by both the government and private enterprises are going to scale up. India has over 40,000 drones, but where are they really?

"We have been working on powering delivery via drones for some time now and welcome this move from DGCA to test our systems. We are excited to build the future of aerial food delivery in India," said a Zomato Spokesperson. According to <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/start-ups/hyperlocal-start-ups-can-test-drone-delivery-after-dgca-permission-11591202819808.html">reports</a>, officials have confirmed that a total of 13 companies have been given the approval which also includes Spicejet and Asteria Aerospace, which is backed by Reliance. “It's an experimental project, essentially a regulatory sandbox where DGCA wants companies to test flying drones outside of visual line of sight and determine what are the requirements for safe operation when the regulation actually comes. It's not like we can start full fledged operations,” Neel Mehta, cofounder of Asteria Aerospace told Business Insider. The DGCA has begun sending out permission letters to these firms and also providing them with specific airspace in which they can run these tests. “We received our approval on May 21. The plan is for two months we will be carrying out these experiments in an approved airspace of 20 kilometres, which is isolated from aircraft and urban population or any other risks. We will be using it for long distance aerial surveys of pipelines, railways and roadways,” said Mehta. The approvals come at a time when “drone delivery” has been the talk of the town during the coronavirus pandemic, as it will mean truly contactless delivery. US-based unicorn food delivery startup <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/lianeyvkoff/2020/05/13/for-postmates-robot-fleet-supervisors-the-hardest-part-about-working-from-home-is-slow-internet/#899250676e63">Postmates </a>had also begun testing robot deliveries. In India, in June 2019, Zomato had first announced a successful test delivery using drones in India. In the run, the drone covered a distance of 5 kilometres in about 10 minutes, with a peak speed of 80 kmph, carrying a load of 5 kgs. Zomato had also acquired TechEagle innovation, a drone startup in December 2018, leading to their experiments with drones. In 2016, the government announced a new draft policy, under which it proposed to set up a dedicated drone corridor, create drone ports and allow 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in manufacturing the remotely piloted aircraft in the country. This policy also hinted at making room for aerial delivery of goods in India. In May 2019, the DGCA had asked interested organizations to submit Expression of Interest (EOI) for experimental Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations (BVLOS) of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS)/Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Zomato had then said that it is forming a consortium as per DGCA’s guidelines to carry out experimental BVLOS operations. Zomato, Swiggy, Dunzo can start testing drone deliveries as India starts doling out permits

<ul><li><keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> delivered 1.5 million food orders in March only on cycles. </li><li>The maximum delivery partners in cycles were in Bangalore followed by Mumbai. </li><li>Swiggy is also piloting delivery through EVs. </li></ul>Indian delivery <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> have been taking a turn towards “green” delivery by switching to <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> and cycles. <keyword id="3105315" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foodtech">Foodtech</keyword> unicorn Swiggy introduced food delivery on cycles in 2017, and it seems to have finally taken off now. Swiggy reported that in March it delivered 1.5 million food orders on cycles. In tier 2 and 3 cities like Surat, Belgaum, Guwahati and Lucknow over 20% of Swiggy’s delivery partners use cycles for delivery. In India, 10,000 delivery partners use cycles, with maximum cyclists in Bangalore followed by Mumbai. “A couple of years back, we initiated concerted efforts to make millions of our deliveries more sustainable for the environment. With close to 10,000 delivery partners on cycles each day, we have found that in some of our cities, the average travel time for a delivery partner on cycles is even lesser than bikes or scooters,” said Srivats TS, VP, Marketing, Swiggy. Swiggy’s competitor Zomato too had introduced delivery through bicycles in February 2019. According to <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/zomato-enrols-bicycles-e-bikes-for-delivery-in-12-cities/">reports</a>, Zomato had partnered with startups like Mobycy, Yulu, Zoomcar’s PEDL among others to start the delivery service. The next mile of delivery For delivery startups, fast innovation is defining their stand in the industry. Swiggy is piloting the use of Electric Vehicles for its deliveries in 10 cities. Last year, Swiggy’s delivery partners in cities like Delhi and Lucknow carried out deliveries on e-rickshaws. The company’s official statement said that the adoption of EVs will reduce the running cost by 40%. Going one step ahead, Zomato had earlier <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/zomato-acquires-drone-delivery-startup-techeagle/article25671762.ece">acquired</a> drone startup TechEagle innovations. With this, the startup is reportedly testing delivery via drones. Meanwhile, logistics startup DOT which offers last mile delivery through e-vehicles has been ramping up its business and is also looking at a <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/logistics/logistics-startup-dot-eyes-rs-365-crore-revenue-in-fy20/article26356832.ece">revenue </a>of ₹360 crore by 2020.
