<ul class="summary-list"><li>As a journalist who visits <keyword id="14313321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cabo-san-lucas" source="Orion">Cabo San Lucas</keyword> often, I've tried many methods of transport in the area.</li><li>From flights to rental cars, here are my top choices for navigating to and around the peninsula.</li></ul><p>Getting to <keyword id="11933000" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mexico" source="Orion">Mexico</keyword>'s Baja California Sur is easy for anyone living in Southern California like me, where nonstop flights are plentiful. As a <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> writer living at the beach literally next door to Los Angeles International Airport, the most complicated part of the trip is when I arrive at Los Cabos International Airport and have to figure out my transportation to whichever part of the area I'm visiting first. I usually like to stay in two different places during my stays, which last from four days to a week or more.</p><p>I like having a car, so I usually rent one when I land. But sometimes, I want to leave the driving to someone else and will book a transfer to my first hotel or simply walk out of the airport and catch a taxi waiting in the queue. The airport is not very big and is very manageable for first-time visitors.</p><h3><strong>Getting to Los Cabos: Los Cabos International Airport</strong></h3><div type="image" title="Los Cabos International Airport" height="2324" width="3104" msid="92524470" hostid="261" sizebytes="285928"></div><p><a href="https://www.loscabosairport.com/#" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Los Cabos International Airport</a> is my preferred airport in the region, and flights to it are plentiful from various parts of the US, Canada, and other Mexican cities, with about 550 a week from approximately 40 destinations, many of which are nonstop. The US carriers Delta, American, United, Alaska Airlines, Jet Blue, Southwest, and Spirit fly nonstop to the airport, so airfares are often reasonably priced because of the level of competition. High season (October to April) means higher prices on most carriers.</p><p>Visitors from countries farther away can find good connections through major US cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Dallas, as well as in Mexican hubs in Mexico City, Tijuana, and Guadalajara. </p><p>Driving isn't really an option from the US border unless you're inclined to be in the car for 1,000 miles, which is the distance between Tijuana and Los Cabos. Coming from across the Sea of Cortez by car is possible from the Mexican state of Sinaloa by taking an eight-hour ferry from Topolobampo, but the car and ferry routes are for the truly adventurous. Driving from the US border isn't recommended, as much of the trip is across empty desert past dusty little towns with few services, like hotels and restaurants, to be found.</p><h3><strong>Getting around Los Cabos and Baja California Sur</strong></h3><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Cars in Cabo san Lucas, Mexico" height="4095" width="5460" msid="92524472" hostid="261" sizebytes="1974560"></div><strong>Rental cars</strong><p>Before arriving at the airport, decide how you plan to get around during your stay. Renting a car allows for complete freedom to roam, and if you drive a stick shift, you'll save hundreds of dollars on the rental. There are numerous car-rental companies at the airport, including the major players National, Alamo, Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Thrifty, as well as Sixt, Ace, Firefly, and local companies. </p><p>Prices are usually comparable among the various companies, but reserving ahead of time is important, especially during high season. I like to stick with the more well-known companies like Avis, Alamo, Hertz, and Budget, as there's less of a chance they'll run out of cars and leave me scrambling.</p><p><strong>Car services</strong></p><p>Leave the driving to others if you plan to stay in a resort along the Tourist Corridor, in Cabo San Lucas, or beyond the city of Cabo to the Pacific side of the tip of Baja California Sur, for once you get to your hotel (plan to spend $60 to $75 on a car service/taxi from the airport) most adventure/excursion companies will pick you up there and drop you back off. Taxis are also bountiful in Los Cabos, especially in Cabo San Lucas. Airport rides take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on where your hotel is.</p><p>If La Paz is going to be your home base, expect a 2.5-hour drive north from the airport. There are private-car services, taxis, and shuttle services to get you there, but a rental car will allow you to explore along the way, which is what I recommend. The two routes to drive to La Paz are both interesting, and each route takes about the same time. Going through Los Barriles on the eastern side of the peninsula is wilder and more scenic, while the western trip takes you through Todos Santos, one of <a href="https://www.visitmexico.com/en/types-of-tourism-in-mexico/pueblos-magicos-magical-towns" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos, or magical towns</a>. Just be certain to get a vehicle large enough to hold both your luggage and your diving/fishing gear.</p><p>Once in La Paz, the best ways to get around are walking, driving a rental car, or taking a taxi. <p>French taxi unions are staging a nationwide protest again Uber in Paris, <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2016/1/26/10832204/french-taxi-uber-strike-paris-vtc">according to The Verge</a> and posts on social media.&#xa0;</p><p>The protests started earlier today and have shut down much of Paris, <a href="http://www.france24.com/en/20160126-live-strikes-cause-travel-choas-across-france-paris-taxis-aviation">according to to France 24</a>.&#xa0;&#xa0;</p><p><a href="http://www.rfi.fr/contenu/ticker/greve-taxis-ile-france-20-interpellations-prefecture">According to police</a>, 20 arrests have been made so far.&#xa0;</p><p><div></div></p><p>Taxi unions are angry that Uber drivers do not need a license to operate. French taxi drivers shut down Paris as protests over Uber get violent

Cases can include more than one victim, and a tally of victims, which the government has released since 2014, reported 29,168 homicide victims during 2017.</p><p>Mexico's homicide rate reached 20.51 homicides per 100,000 people in 2017. That's a considerable increase over the previous year's 16.8 per 100,000 people and more than the previous high, 19.37 per 100,000 people recorded in 2011, which was when the drug war hit its peak.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Christopher Woody/Mexican federal data</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Alejandro Hope, a security analyst and former official for CISEN, Mexico's civilian intelligence agency, noted that the homicide rate was likely higher than government data indicated, as the official count is based on the number of homicide cases, rather than the tally of victims.</p><p><span>Hope told the Associated Press the actual rate was likely closer to 24 homicides per 100,000 people. </span></p><p><span>There is evidence the Mexican <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexican-states-manipulating-crime-data-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">government has manipulated homicide numbers</a> in the past, suggesting the total number could be higher. <a href="http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/columna/alejandro-hope/nacion/los-mas-de-30-mil-muertos-de-2017" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hope noted</a> that 2017's status as most violent year on record won't be confirmed until Mexico's statistical agency releases homicide data later this year.</span></p><p><span>While the current statistics would far and away be Mexico's highest homicide rate on record, other countries in the region have higher ones. </span></p><p><span>Data compiled <a href="https://www.insightcrime.org/news/analysis/2017-homicide-round-up/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by Insight Crime</a> showed that Venezuela had a rate of 89 homicides per 100,000 people in 2017, while El Salvador saw 60 per 100,000, Honduras had 42.8 per 100,000, and Brazil had 29.7 per 100,000.</span><span></span></p><h2><span>3 years of increases</span></h2><p><span>Twenty-eight of Mexico's 32 states saw increases in their total number of homicide victims, while 26 states saw increases in their homicide rates - Mexico state, the country's most populous, and Michoacan, long riven by drug-related violence, were two of the exceptions</span>.</p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Jose Luis Gonzalez</span></p><p class="caption">Forensic technicians at a crime scene where unknown assailants left the body of a man wrapped in blankets on the side of a road on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, November 22, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Baja California went from 33.38 homicides per 100,000 people in 2016 to 58.56 last year, and the state's total number of homicide victims rose from 1,258 in 2016 to 2,317 last year. </span><span>Baja California Sur, home to resorts in Los Cabos, went from 24.4 homicides per 100,000 in 2016 to 69.15 in 2017 and saw its total number of homicide victims increase from 225 in 2016 to 738 last year.</span></p><p><span>Colima, one of Mexico's smallest states by population, saw its homicide rate jump to 93.61 in 2017, up from 71.22 in 2016 and 23.08 in 2015. Guerrero, which has been a hotspot for drug production and trafficking, had a rate of 64.26.</span></p><p><span>Nayarit, on the Pacific coast, saw the most dramatic increase, going from 3.13 homicides per 100,000 people in 2016 to 20.1 per 100,000 in 2017.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Christopher Woody/Mexican federal data</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>The state also had 354 homicide victims last year - a 743% increase over the 42 registered in 2016. </span></p><p><span>Violence in Nayarit increased after the March 2017 arrest of a former attorney general in the US on drug-trafficking charges.</span></p><p><span>Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto campaigned on promises to bring down violence that spiked during his predecessor's offensive against drug cartels between 2006 and 2012. </span></p><p><span>While homicides declined during both of his first two years in office, each of the past three have seen increases.</span></p><p><span>Specific groups have also seen increases in violence directed toward them in recent years.</span></p><p><span>At least 10 journalists were killed in 2017 in Mexico, which has been <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mexico-violence-journalists/mexican-journalist-killed-amid-wave-of-violence-against-media-idUSKBN1F3014" target="_blank" rel="noopener">labeled</a> as the most dangerous country for journalists in the Western Hemisphere.</span></p><p><span>2017 also closed with a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-political-killings-narco-underworld-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spate of deadly attacks against political officials</a>. The nine mayors killed there in 2017 are the <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2017/12/30/mexico/1514669873_755518.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most on record</a> in a year, and at least 150 mayoral candidates, mayors, or ex-mayors have been killed since 2002, earning them a homicide rate <a href="https://justiceinmexico.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/180116_mayors_killed_mexico_2000-2017-laura_calderon.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">many times higher</a> than the general population.</span></p><p><span>Femicides, the killing of women for reasons related to gender, have also increased, according to <a href="http://www.sinembargo.mx/21-01-2018/3376168" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statistics</a> released for the first time by Mexico's government. The 671 cases reported in 2017 were a 15.68% increase over the 580 registered in 2016 and a 72.5% increase over the 389 recorded in 2015. Sinaloa state, riven by inter- and intra-cartel fighting over the past year and half, had the most of any state, with 82, followed by Veracruz.</span></p><p><span>While impunity is common for many crimes in Mexico, it appears to be especially so for femicides: <a href="http://www.uniradioinforma.com/noticias/mexico/505302/en-una-decada-se-duplicaron-feminicidios-en-mexico.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one study</a> found that of 2,277 femicide cases in 2015, just 76 led to jail time.</span></p><h2>Regression to the mean?</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Fernando Carranza</span></p><p class="caption">Forensic technicians at a crime scene where three men were gunned down by unknown assailants, in the municipality of Tlaquepaque, on the outskirts of Guadalajara, Mexico, January 10, 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>2018 has already gotten off to a gruesome start for Mexico. During the first nine days of the year, there were <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2018/01/09/mexico/1515516631_943613.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">200 homicide cases</a> around the country, concentrating in Guerrero, Baja California Sur, Colima, and Chihuahua - the latter of which <a href="https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/31-killed-in-7-hours-in-state-of-chihuahua" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saw 31 homicides</a> in seven hours between January 4 and January 5.</p><p>In Guanajuato, which had its most violent year on record in 2017, the first 10 days of 2018 were marked by <a href="https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/62-assassinations-in-10-days-in-guanajuato" target="_blank" rel="noopener">62 homicides</a> - one every four hours.</p><p>Veracruz, which has seen intense fighting between rival criminal groups, got a grisly start to the year, with five severed heads <a href="https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/five-severed-heads-left-on-hood-of-taxi-in-veracruz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> on a taxi there on January 5. The second weekend of the year saw 16 killings, with the dismembered remains of <a href="https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/dismembered-bodies-trigger-army-operation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nine victims</a> found in a vehicle in the capital. In both cases, notes were found with the bodies threatening authorities.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Alejandro Acosta</span></p><p class="caption">Police near the body of a person who died after a bus was torched in Guadalajara, reportedly after a military operation to arrest two Jalisco New Generation cartel leaders, March 9, 2012.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>In Nayarit, where violence increased considerably last year, the remains of 33 corpses have been found in <a href="https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/body-count-at-33-in-hidden-nayarit-graves/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unmarked graves</a> uncovered near the state capital in recent days. The state government has requested the federal government led the investigation.</span></p><p><span>Mexican security officials <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/number-of-murders-soared-in-mexico-in-2017-1516584153" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Wall Street Journal that the increase in violence can be attributed in large part of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-carnage-and-corruption-upstart-mexican-cartels-path-to-top-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the growth of the Jalisco New Generation cartel</a>, which emerged in 2010 and has expanded rapidly since. It reportedly operates in at least 22 states, and its expansion has triggered aggressive fighting in many areas.</span></p><p><span>There are other problems that contribute to the bloodshed, however. "There are social triggers, institutional ones, historical ones, issues of land rights," Hope, the security analyst, <a href="https://apnews.com/c31727291c4f4b28972e750b9f5ff58f" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the AP</a>. "It is complex."</span></p><p><span>Hope said the declines seen between 1997 and 2007 may have been an aberration from the country's regular level of violence and that Mexico's current homicide rates are at about where they were in the middle of the 20th century.</span></p><p><span>"What we have seen in the last decade is regression to the mean," he <a href="https://apnews.com/c31727291c4f4b28972e750b9f5ff58f" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the AP</a>.
