Two new <keyword id="13825644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omicron-subvariants" source="Orion">Omicron subvariants</keyword> are on the rise in the United States, adding to concern of health experts whether they may fuel a summer surge in COVID-19 cases. The subvariants, known as BA.4 and BA.5, were estimated to make up nearly 13 per cent of all new US COVID-19 cases in the latest week ending June 4, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Tuesday. BA.4 made up 5.4 per cent of the new cases, while BA.5 made up 7.6 per cent, according to CDC estimates. The two subvariants represented the highest percentage of cases in a region that includes Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, according to the CDC, Xinhua news agency reported. Another subvariant BA.2.12.1, which remains the dominant variant in the country, made up 62.2 per cent of all new US cases in the past week following months of steady growth. The BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants were added to the <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword>'s monitoring list in March and designated as variants of concern by the <keyword id="668044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Centre-for-Disease-Prevention-and-Control" source="Orion">European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control</keyword>. CDC data showed they were present in all US regions. Evidence suggests the new subvariants are yet-more contagious versions of <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword>, which may be able to dodge antibodies from earlier infection well enough to trigger a new wave, health experts said. "BA.4 and 5 may end up becoming the dominant Omicron lineages in the coming weeks or months," said Nathan Grubaugh, an associate professor of epidemiology at Yale University's School of Public Health. The United States is currently averaging about 108,000 COVID-19 cases and 300 deaths each day, the latest CDC data showed. Health experts believe the real number is significantly higher as increasing at-home testing results had not been tracked. Some epidemiologists warned surging cases may put people with compromised health at risk and can also expose many infected people to long-term health problems. New Omicron subvariants on the rise in the US

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> today hiked interest rates for the second consecutive month, from 4.4% to 4.9%.</li><li>The rate hike comes at a time when inflation has been surging and demand in rural India has been plateauing, signaling economic distress.</li><li><keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> governor Shaktikanta Das said that the rate hike should help it fight “globalised inflation”.</li></ul>The Indian <keyword id="6358156" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="central-bank" source="Orion">central bank</keyword> today raised its <keyword id="37018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-rate" source="Orion">interest rate</keyword>s – the second time in a month - by 50 basis points. This is higher than last month’s hike of 40 basis points and the base interest rate at which the central bank lends is now at 4.9%. "The repo rate still remains below its pre-pandemic level," Shaktikanta Das, the governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said while making the announcement. This move is part of a long crusade that the Indian government and the central bank’s crusade against the rising cost of essentials and non-essentials in the country. For the month of April, the consumer price inflation touched 7.8%, stressing out household budgets. Das said that the Russia-Ukraine war has led to the ‘globalization’ of inflation – stopping short of blaming the West for its sanctions regime which has resulted in an increase in prices of everything, from crude oil to food grains and commodities. The RBI governor also said that the inflation forecast for the current year is at 6.7%. The benchmark Nifty50 and Sensex were marginally in the red, reacting to RBI’s rate hike. Experts, however, believe that the market has also “priced-in” the rate hike, meaning that the impact of higher interest rates has already been anticipated and accounted for by the stock markets. Das also sounded slightly positive about the rural economy, saying it is “gradually improving”, while he sounded more optimistic about the urban economy, saying it is recovering. He retained India’s GDP estimate for FY23 at 7.2%, slightly lower than IMF’s 7.5% forecast after its latest downward revision. India’s central bank hikes interest rates by 50 bps to fight off ‘globalised’ inflation

Taku, in a conversation with <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-06-08/mobikwik-seeks-to-raise-100-million-after-deferring-planned-ipo">Bloomberg</a>, revealed that the company plans to use the fresh funding for marketing purposes, hiring people and acquiring new businesses. The company has not yet decided the valuation for the current funding round, she said. The fintech startup had raised $20 million from Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) in June last year, at a valuation of $700-$750 million. So far, the payment service has raised $176 million in funding, according to business insights platform <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/mobikwik">Crunchbase</a>. The company counts American Express, Bajaj Finance, Cisco System, Sequoia Capital and Treeline Asia as investors, who will also be selling a part of their shareholdings in the IPO. The company intends to raise ₹1,900 crore through this IPO. Taku confirmed that the company still plans to launch an IPO but at a more opportune time. Mobikwik looks to raise $100 million as it delays IPO plans, founder says the ‘markets are not ready’

The report indicates that India is the least environmentally sustainable country among the 180 countries assessed. India scored the lowest EPI — 18.9 — as per a report by Yale Center for Environmental Law &amp; Policy, Yale University, Center for International Earth Science Information Network, Columbia University and McCall MacBain Foundation. The report provides a data-driven summary of the state of <keyword id="49089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainability" source="Orion">sustainability</keyword> around the world using 40 performance indicators across 11 issue categories. The EPI ranks 180 countries on their progress toward improving environmental health, protecting ecosystem vitality, and mitigating climate change. While Denmark was the most sustainable country with an EPI score of 77.90, followed by the United Kingdom (77.70 score) and Finland (76.50 score). As per the EPI 2022 report, India witnessed a major drop in scores around Ecosystem Vitality and Climate Policy. Among these two categories, a major chunk of drop in EPI score can be attributed to species habitat index, loss of ecosystem services, unsustainable fishing, carbon emissions from land cover and greenhouse gas emissions per capita. Peer countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Turkey and Sudan have also scored better than India, as per the EPI 2022 report. “These indicators measure how close countries are to meeting internationally established sustainability targets for specific environmental issues. While the overall EPI scores provide a way to spotlight sustainability leaders and call out laggards, the accompanying disaggregated data offers a more refined tool for identifying policy weaknesses and anomalies, as well as proven programs that countries can adopt from their top-performing peers,” said EPI in the report. The government of India has been working tirelessly towards the 2030 sustainability goals (<keyword id="450172" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SDGs" source="Orion">SDGs</keyword>) for a long time. <ul><li><keyword id="472923" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="micro-atms" source="Orion">Micro ATMs</keyword> were the fastest growing payment infrastructure in FY22, according to a report by ICICI Securities.</li><li>MicroATMs are portable devices that allow banking transactions including cash deposit, withdrawal and fund transfer using debit or RuPay cards.</li><li>Interestingly, while digital payments have been growing fast, cash circulation has also risen to 14% in FY21 from 8% in FY17.</li></ul>While quick digital payments through apps like Google Pay, Phone Pay, PayTM led by UPI are growing rapidly, interestingly, cash in circulation too increased in the last couple of years. Within various withdrawal instruments, micro ATMs were the fastest growing payment infrastructure in FY22, according to a report by ICICI Securities. In fact, the deployment of micro ATMs outpaced the growth in cards, ATMs. “Lower commercial viability, especially in rural India, and increasing acceptance of mATM, resulted in most players opting for building mATM network over traditional ATM,” said the report. Cash withdrawals through micro ATMs grew 33% to ₹285 billion as of April 2022. Meanwhile, micro ATM deployment jumped by a strong 93%, followed by prepaid cards at 45%. What is a micro ATM? A micro ATM is like a mini version of an ATM. MicroATMs are portable devices that allow banking transactions including cash deposit, withdrawal and fund transfer using debit or RuPay cards. 4 year old Fino Payments Bank is the dominant player in the industry Fino Payments Bank, which calls itself the ‘digital banking partner’ for hardworking Indians, is the most dominant player in mATMs with a 38% market share in total deployed devices. It is followed by Mauritius based lender SBM Bank India with a 23% market share. Fino’s share in micro ATMs is more than that of the top 16 banks like HDFC Bank, SBI, Kotak, IDFC. Yes Bank however has an 11% market share in this space — and the only top tier bank to tap this opportunity. “SBM Bank of India, Yes Bank, NSDL Payment Bank and City Union Bank have been aggressively tapping the mATM space since the past 12 months,” the report says. Micro ATM transactions stood at ₹3 trillion growing by 18% in FY22. Micro ATM device networks grew at a robust 70% CAGR, while at the same period ATM networks grew by a muted 3% since March 2020. “Notably, unlike the credit market, fintechs and relatively small banks like Fino SBM Bank India, NSDL Payment Bank, and City Union dominate the mATM space. Cumulative market share of top-5 players stood at 82% as on April’22,” said the report. Cash remains an important mode of payment despite growing digital payments While digital payments are increasingly becoming popular, cash too remains an important mode of payment in day-to-day transactions. Data shows that in the US and South Korea, cash in circulation (as a % of GDP) increased to 9.5% and 7.6%, respectively, in 2020 (from 7.6% and 5.2% in 2015). Malaysia and Thailand, too, have witnessed an increase in cash in circulation. India is second in terms of highest ‘cash in circulation to GDP’ ratio as of 2020, followed by Thailand, Russia and the US. “Due to the pandemic, cash withdrawals in India declined by 13% to 28.9 trillion in FY21. However, with economies returning to normal pace, low-value cash transactions are expected to rise again,” said the report. India remains a cash economy, which is why cash in circulation to GDP touched 14%, higher than pre-demonetisation level. However, nearly 47% and 40% of households do not have access to bank branches and ATMs, respectively, within 2 kms of their homes. INTERVIEW: Pepper Content skip the traditional Middle East route, heads directly for the US market

Indian e-commerce is booming and grocery is the hottest segment within that. While everyone from Amazon and JioMart to DMart and Grofers use discounts as the primary luure, a recent research report says that BigBasket is leading the pack despite offering lesser discounts compared to most other players. This would be music to the ears of executives at the Tata Group, which bought BigBasket in May 2021 for an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/startups/tata-says-acquired-a-majority-stake-in-online-grocery-bigbasket/articleshow/83029366.cms">undisclosed amount</a>, with the goal of adding it to its up and coming super app Tata Neu. According to the report, BigBasket has about 9 million monthly active users, compared to JioMart and DMart’s 5 million each. Though the company has a discount rate of about 14%.
