The decision comes as the airline faces supply chain challenges that have delayed the delivery of new aircraft. To bridge the gap, it has already inducted 35 white-tail Boeing 737-8 planes, with plans to add 15 more in the coming months. White-tail aircraft are planes originally manufactured for other carriers and later repurposed by Air India Express. As per the agreement, Air India guests can travel on a single intermodal ticket and take seamless, on-ground train and bus connections to more than 100 cities and towns in Austria, Belgium, Germany, The Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, and the United Kingdom via its European gateways of Amsterdam, Birmingham, London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Milan, and Vienna. Passengers can enjoy the benefit of the same baggage allowance on these rail or bus operator services as offered by Air India on its own flights. Currently, intermodal tickets with Air India are available for booking through travel agents globally. The airline also plans to extend the facility to its own sales channels progressively. TIME listed Reliance in the 'Titans' category (one of the five categories under which the companies were divided, other being Leaders, Disrupters, Innovators, and Pioneers). Tata was listed in 'Titan's' category while Serum under 'Pioneers'. "Reliance Industries was founded as a textile and polyester company 58 years ago by Dhirubhai Ambani. Today the sprawling conglomerate -- which has aligned its growth with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a 'self-reliant' India -- is the country's most valuable company, with a market capitalisation of more than USD 200 billion," TIME said. The publication went on to stated that in February, Reliance came out on top in a fiercely competitive race to dominate India's burgeoning streaming market by striking a USD 8.5 billion merger deal with Disney's India business. Reliance, Tata on TIME's list of world's most influential companies

<keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> plans to introduce sophisticated features to its generative artificial intelligence virtual agent that handles more than 6,000 customer queries daily. The Tata Group-owned airline is using ChatGPT to analyse even some complex questions it may not be able to immediately answer to improve customer experience in later interactions and is helping it to become more attuned to natural language. In a release on Friday, Air India said it has become the world's first airline to have successfully deployed a Generative AI virtual agent '<keyword id="6388899" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="maharaja" source="Orion">Maharaja</keyword>', powered by Microsoft's Azure OpenAI service. The agent has successfully answered over half a million customer queries since its pilot launch in March 2023, and today manages over 6,000 queries a day in four languages, the release said. According to the airline, 'Maharaja' manages an extensive spectrum of customer queries across 1,300 areas, including those related to flight status, baggage allowances, packing restrictions, check-in, frequent flyer awards, airport lounge access, flight changes and refunds. The agent speaks Hindi, English, French, and German. "Of the 6,000-plus questions received each day, over 80 per cent are successfully answered in seconds. About 15 per cent of customer queries today require additional assistance, and Maharaja recognises this automatically and orchestrates a seamless handoff to Air India's contact centre agents," the release said. In the coming months, the airline plans to launch a host of sophisticated features, driven by patent-pending technologies. "This includes a novel user experience that changes the way customers interact with AI agents with a combination of textual and graphical interactions that can potentially further speed up customer interactions... Air India also plans to enhance the current AI agent with data-driven deep-personalisation capabilities," the release said. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Air India, said that after the emergence of Large Language Model driven generative AI capabilities, it is increasingly seeing a definitive shift in guest preferences to use chat interactions to get the information and support they need quickly. Air India also said that generative AI solutions help automate repetitive and mundane tasks such as booking, cancellation and confirmation, and free up bandwidth for human agents to focus on more complex and value-adding interactions. The full service carrier has embarked on an ambitious expansion plan. Vistara and Air India have announced non-stop flights in the last couple of days. While Vistara has announced daily, non-stop flights between Delhi and Maldives, Air India will now connect Kochi and Doha daily. Both the flights will be operated using Airbus A320neo aircraft. With the launch of the Delhi-Male daily non-stop flight, Vistara now offers direct daily flights connectivity from Maldives to two Indian airports – Delhi and Mumbai. Vistara till now has been operating a weekly flight to Male from Mumbai since 2021 and the company says that it has garnered good response with Indians travelling more for holidays. Vinod Kannan, Chief Executive Officer, Vistara, said, “ Maldives has evolved as one of the most popular leisure destinations for Indian travellers and we are happy to be able to offer more choices and flexibility to our customers on this route.” Starting Oct 1, 2023, Vistara will operate to and fro from Delhi and Male. The flight from Delhi has been scheduled at 10:45 am while the one from Male is scheduled at 3:20 pm local time. Meanwhile, the Tata Group-owned Air India has announced non-stop flights between Kochi and Doha in Qatar. The global carrier will operate a daily non-stop service from October 23, Air India said in a statement. "AI953 will depart at 0130 local time to reach Doha at 0345 hrs. The return flight AI954 will take off from Doha at 0445 hrs to land at Kochi at 1135 hrs (All Local Time)," the statement issued on Sunday said.

Vistara, Air India in expansion mode with daily non-stop flights to Maldives and Doha

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) plans to ramp up its technical staff to 1,100 by hiring another 400 people in the next one to two years as well as increase the number of offices to 19 as the watchdog strengthens the safety oversight capabilities, according to its chief <keyword id="26593" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="arun-kumar" source="Orion">Arun Kumar</keyword>. Kumar, who will be superannuating on February 28 after being at the helm for nearly four years, described his tenure as a "roller coaster ride" during which various steps were taken to improve aviation safety and the regulator also dealt with multiple headwinds, including engine issues and safety concerns over <keyword id="6358032" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="spicejet" source="Orion">SpiceJet</keyword>. <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s aviation safety oversight ranking jumping to the 55th position from 112th place earlier under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) coordinated validation mission, rollout of eGCA for processes at the regulator, introduction of regulations for transgenders who want to be pilots as well as compulsory breath analyser tests for air traffic controllers are among the key developments during the tenure. "The country's aviation safety oversight capability has improved substantially and DGCA in its annual surveillance programme conducts more than 4,000 spot checks/audits/night surveillance," Kumar told PTI in an interview. Currently, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has around 1,300 employees, including about 700 technical staff. "The number of technical staff is expected to increase by 400 in the next one to two years... also, the number of offices of the DGCA in different parts of the country will increase to 19 from the current 14 in the near term," he said. When asked about his tenure, Kumar, an IAS officer of the 1989 Haryana cadre, said it has been a "roller coaster ride". "It was fulfilling as we took various steps to improve aviation safety. eGCA was a game changer and made life easier for all stakeholders," he asserted. "Among the biggest achievements are India's position going up in the ICAO safety rankings and the full rollout of the eGCA. With the high ICAO ranking, the world knows that India is a better country when it comes to aviation safety," Kumar said. During the pandemic, the DGCA chief said that India did what other countries were doing and flight services were suspended for a considerable time. "What is significant is that our resumption was glitch free while others (countries) had air crash and accidents. DGCA is an expert agency and we have always taken pride in our professionalism. Aviation safety is a serious business and DGCA inspectors have always risen to the occasion," Kumar said. India is the world's third largest as well as the fastest growing civil aviation market in the world. "On an average, there are 4.5 lakh domestic air passengers and 1 lakh international air passengers in the country," Kumar said. In recent times, the regulator has also taken strict action in relation of unruly passenger behaviour onboard flights. Last month, in a span of less than a week, the DGCA had penalised Tata Group-owned <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> twice related to incidents of unruly passenger behaviour. On January 24, the regulator imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the airline for not reporting two incidents of unruly passenger behaviour onboard a Paris-New Delhi flight on December 6, 2022. On January 20, the watchdog slapped a penalty of Rs 30 lakh on Air India as well as suspended the licence of the pilot-in-command of the New York-Delhi flight in which a person allegedly urinated on a female co-passenger on November 26, 2022. In connection with the incident, a fine of Rs 3 lakh was also imposed on Air India's Director of in-flight services for failing to discharge her duties.

DGCA plans to hire 400 tech staff in 1-2 years; increase offices to 19: Arun Kumar

It will be interesting to see how the Tata Group finances the fleet expansion. It is also said that Air India has asked its pilots if they want to get trained in <keyword id="14243855" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flying-a350" source="Orion">flying A350</keyword>, which means the airline plans to induct the same in its fleet for long haul flights. However, Air India officials were not available to comment. The Tata Group acquired Air India from the Indian government last year. The group already has Vistara and Air Asia under its fold. In bid to go aggressive in the international skies, Air India launches discounted airfare to Europe

Seeking to expand its fleet as well as operations, the airline has placed orders for acquiring a total of 840 aircraft that includes an option to buy 370 planes. This is one of the largest aircraft orders by any airline. Currently, Air <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> has around 1,600 pilots to operate its 113 aircraft fleet and in recent times, there have been instances of ultra-long-haul flights getting cancelled or delayed due to a shortage of crew. The airline's two subsidiaries -- <keyword id="6378232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-india-express" source="Orion">Air India Express</keyword> and <keyword id="1583080" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airasia-india" source="Orion">AirAsia India</keyword> -- together have around 850 pilots for flying their 54 planes while the joint venture Vistara has more than 600 pilots. The latter has a fleet of 53 aircraft, one of the sources told PTI. Air India, Air India Express, Vistara and AirAsia India together have a little over 3,000 pilots to operate the combined fleet of 220 aircraft. The latest Airbus firm order comprises 210 A320/321 Neo/XLR and 40 A350-900/1000. The Boeing firm order comprises 190 737-Max, 20 787s and 10 777s. "Air India is taking these 40 A350 majorly for its ultra-long-haul routes or flights which last over 16 hours. The airline will require 30 pilots -- 15 commanders and 15 first officers -- per aircraft, which means some 1,200 pilots for A350s alone," the source in the know said. According to the source, 26 pilots are required for one Boeing 777. If the airline inducts 10 such planes, it will require 260 pilots while 20 Boeing 787 will require some 400 pilots considering that each such aircraft needs 20 pilots -- 10 commanders and 10 first officers. Taken together, the induction of 30 wide-body Boeing planes will require a total of 660 pilots, the sources said. On average, each narrow-body plane, whether it is the Airbus A320 family or Boeing 737 Max, requires 12 pilots, implying that 400 such planes in the fleet will require not less than 4,800 pilots for their operations. On Thursday, Air India Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Agarwal in a Linkedin post said "the order comprises 470 firm aircraft, 370 options and purchase rights to be procured from Airbus and Boeing over the next decade". According to Air India's former Commercial Director Pankaj Shrivastava, enough opportunities have to be created for the <keyword id="646408" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="commercial-pilots-licence" source="Orion">Commercial Pilots Licence</keyword> (CPL) holders to get them to type rating. Type ratings are a particular training that makes a pilot qualify to operate a particular type of aircraft. "Air India would definitely have some plan in place. They would not be buying these planes to put them on the ground," he said. These aircraft are not going to be inducted tomorrow but over a period of time. During that period, Shrivastava said that he was confident that Boeing and Airbus along with Air India will be able to create a large enough pool of pilots by having in place the required number of flight simulators and pilots training. Air India will require more than 6,500 pilots for 470 planes

The airline, which was taken over by the <keyword id="6355725" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tata-group" source="Orion">Tata Group</keyword> in January 2022, also plans to lease 36 aircraft and out of them, two B 777-200 LR have already been inducted. In a release on Friday, Air India said it "plans to hire over 4,200 cabin crew trainees and 900 pilots in 2023 as the airline adds new aircraft and rapidly expands its domestic and international operations". Between May 2022-February 2023, the airline hired more than 1,900 cabin crew. "Over 1,100 cabin crew have been trained in the last seven months (between July 2022-January 2023), and in the past three months, approximately 500 cabin crew have been released for flying by the airline," the release said. <keyword id="837472" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sandeep-verma" source="Orion">Sandeep Verma</keyword>, Head - Inflight Services at Air India, said the addition of fresh talent will accelerate the pace of cultural transformation at the airline and added that it is also looking to step up hiring of more pilots and maintenance engineers. The cabin crew will undergo a 15-week programme to impart safety and service skills, and will be coached to exemplify the best of Indian hospitality and Tata group culture. The training programme will include extensive classroom and in-flight training at the airline's training facility in Mumbai as well as familiarisation flights, the release said. Air India to hire 5,100 cabin crew, pilots in 2023

In a major development, the <keyword id="64630" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Commercial-Pilots-Association" source="Orion">Indian Commercial Pilots Association</keyword> (ICPA) and the <keyword id="64606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Pilots-Guild" source="Orion">Indian Pilots Guild</keyword> (IPG) of <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> have rejected the new pay structure proposed by the airline. The primary bone of contention is the reduction in flying allowance from 70 hours to 40 hours every month under the new structure, which the pilots believe is unfair. The two unions have warned of possible 'industrial unrest' if the management goes ahead with the new terms without their consent. While Air India has stated that it will "continue to engage with the remainder of its staff", the airline has taken a tough stance on the issue, saying that there are "no recognised unions in Air India". This is the first wage revision offered by the Tata group-owned Air India since its takeover last year, and it will affect all 3,000 pilots across its four airlines - Air India, <keyword id="6378232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-India-Express" source="Orion">Air India Express</keyword>, <keyword id="1625599" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Asia-India" source="Orion">Air Asia India</keyword>, and <keyword id="2467342" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara" source="Orion">Vistara</keyword>. The pilots' unions have instructed their members to reject the new employment conditions and wage structure offered by the management. An agreement has been put in place for the employees to sign by April 25, but the two unions have stated that they will contest the terms and conditions, with their pilots refusing to sign the revised employment and compensation terms. The two unions have warned of potential industrial unrest if the company takes any coercive or victimising action against their members. In a joint statement, the unions stated that the company reiterated that "all previous understandings, representations and agreements of whatever nature that have been entered into with us are null &amp; void and that the company further has the right to change any terms and conditions". "The term cost to the company for an assumed flying of 70 hrs is deliberately misleading and creates an impression of a generous compensation and accompanying benefits package. The actual guaranteed money being offered is only for 40 hrs. Effectively, any time a pilot is on leave or is unavailable due to recurrent training requirements or document/licence renewals, not to mention any sick leave, there is an automatic pay cut involved," the statement read. "The so-called rationalisations of allowances is not in line with any industry practices as projected by HR. Further, blanket consent is sought for any leave or insurance policy that the company may come up with &amp; which is subject to amendment or outright withdrawal. "Suffice it to say that this is not an all-inclusive list but merely a selection of some of the most outlandish and labour-hostile provisions that we have come across to date. This is dishonourable and how the management is trying to force it down the employees' throats is outright unethical," it added. "Nor has the blatant attack on our rights as workmen to bargain collectively or seek legal redressal for any injustice or victimisation gone unnoticed. Where is the company requirement all of a sudden to forcibly promote almost all the permanent workmen of the union to the so-called Senior Commander management cadre? It is clear from all this that there is a concerted effort to gut the unions and isolate pilots into individual boxes where they can be exploited and victimised at will by the HR department," the statement said. Meanwhile, Air India's spokesperson has defended the new compensation structure, which includes parity among different groups, recognition of managerial and supervisory roles for experienced pilots, and individual contracts sent to pilots and cabin crew for necessary paperwork. "The managerial and supervisory role played by the experienced pilots is also being recognised in the form of designating them as Senior Commander as also offering them a special monthly allowance. The contracts reflecting these enhancements were individually sent to the pilots and cabin crew for necessary paperwork," said the spokesperson. The spokesperson also claimed that a large number of pilots and cabin crew have already accepted the new contracts, and the salary improvements and advancement opportunities they enable. "The airline will continue to engage with the remainder of its staff through this process as currently there is no recognised union in Air India," the spokesperson said. Air India pilots' unions reject proposed pay structure, warn of industrial unrest

In October, the government accepted the highest bid made by a Tata Sons company for 100 per cent equity shares of Air India and Air India Express along with its 50 per cent stake in ground-handling company AISATS — the first privatisation in 20 years. At that time, the government had stated that it wanted to complete the transactions, which included Tatas paying Rs 2,700 crore in cash, by December end. As per the conditions in SPA, all formalities of handover would have to be completed within 8 weeks, but this date can be mutually extended by the buyer and seller and is being done in this case. However, some regulatory approvals are yet to come in for the handover, and certain formalities are yet to be completed, the official, who wished not to be named, told PTI. “The process would be completed by January,” he said without giving a specific date. On October 25, the government had signed the share purchase agreement with Tata Sons for the sale of national carrier Air India for Rs 18,000 crore. Tata’s would pay Rs 2,700 crore cash and takeover Rs 15,300 crore of the airline’s debt. The cash component would come once the handover process is completed, another official explained. Tatas beat the Rs 15,100-crore offer by a consortium led by SpiceJet promoter Ajay Singh and the reserve price of Rs 12,906 crore set by the government for the sale of its 100 per cent stake in the loss-making carrier. As of August 31, Air India had a total debt of Rs 61,562 crore. 75 per cent of this debt or Rs 46,262 crore will be transferred to a special purpose vehicle AIAHL before handing over the loss-making airline to Tata Group. Tatas will not get to retain non-core assets, such as the Vasant Vihar Housing colony of Air India, Air India Building at Nariman Point, Mumbai, and Air India Building in New Delhi. Of the 141 Air India aircraft that Tatas will get, 42 are leased planes, while the remaining 99 are owned. While this will be the first privatisation since 2003-04, Air India will be the third airline brand in the Tatas’ stable – it holds a majority interest in AirAsia India and Vistara, a joint venture with Singapore Airlines Ltd. Tata’s acquisition of Air India will give it access to a fleet of 117 wide-body and narrow-body aircraft, and Air India Express Ltd another 24 narrow-body aircraft besides control of 4,400 domestic and 1,800 international landing, and parking slots at domestic airports. Air India started suffering losses every year since its merger with Indian Airlines in 2007-08. A Turnaround Plan (TAP) and a Financial Restructuring Plan (FRP) were approved for Air India by the previous UPA regime in 2012. However, the TAP did not work out, and Air India continued to reel under losses, with the government giving Rs 20 crore per day to keep the airline afloat. Over the last decade, more than Rs 1.10 lakh crore was infused by way of cash support and loan guarantees in the loss-making airline to keep it afloat. Air India handover to Tata Group delayed further

We are once again at a crucial point in the world's economic recovery. Everything must go right, or global markets could turn violent.For the past four years, the world has been unified in its efforts to first ease the economic pain caused by the pandemic and then combat the historic bout of inflation that followed. When the pandemic set in, central banks around the world slashed rates to zero — just as they did during the financial crisis. Then as inflation set in, they started raising rates at a rapid clip unseen in decades. They did all this in nearly perfect time, which ensured that markets remained stable and predictable. But now, the world risks falling out of sync.The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ecb-lagarde-economy-interest-rates-cuts-inflation-growth-central-banks-2024-6">European Central Bank began easing interest rates </a>on Thursday, cutting its benchmark rate by 0.25%. The move is not only a sign of confidence that the eurozone is in the last bouts of its battle with inflation but also an indication of worry that the economy needs a small boost to keep rolling. Investors and economists expect the Federal Reserve to follow suit and cut interest rates <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-interest-rate-decision-may-rates-held-steady-no-cuts-2024-5">in September</a>. And so, the story goes, central banks around the world will begin their coordinated descent into a soft landing — a perfect calibration of that push-pull between fighting inflation and evading a recession.The thing is, reality has been making a mockery of experts' assumptions all year long. Wall Street started the year expecting inflation to cool off, the economy to slow to a more leisurely pace of growth, and as many as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rates-2024-outlook-rate-cut-predictions-wall-street-stocks-2023-12">six interest rate</a> cuts from the Fed. Instead, inflation data has consistently come in hot, and the US economy's strength has defied expectations. This combination means there's a good chance that the September cut Wall Street is praying for may never materialize."Summer will definitely be interesting," Tamara Basic Vasiljev, a senior economist at Oxford Economics, told me. Her base case is that everything will go according to plan, but there are caveats: "The Fed has proven its ability to fight off any kind of financial stability issues. But what if services inflation keeps surprising to the upside through the summer? Then it becomes apparent they can't even cut in September."If the Fed doesn't cut come fall, America's high interest-rate regime will be out of step with the rest of the world. And any differential between the US and the rest of the world would send a weird wave of money crashing onto America's shores. That sudden surge of cash could, in turn, add liquidity to our financial system just as the Fed is trying to dry it up and push up prices around the economy. This would make it even harder for the Fed to ease, further diverging US policy from the rest of the world. Think of it as a vicious cycle standing in the way of the world's smooth, soft landing.Over time, this has the potential to add volatility to already skittish markets. Here in the US, stocks move on mood — one week, Wall Street thinks we're in for stagflation; the next, it believes a soft landing is coming. This divergence in interest policy, over time, has the potential to bring that same frantic energy to currency markets.<h2>The carry nation</h2>Wind is the result of an imbalance: air moving from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. The greater the pressure differences, the faster the wind blows. The same principle applies to the global flow of cash — investors chase imbalances, and sometimes things get blown over in the process.The US already has somewhat higher interest rates than other countries — the Fed's benchmark rate is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-rate-cuts-forecast-2024-full-accommodation-economic-contraction-unemployment-2023-11">5.25%- 5.50%.</a> These differentials have allowed Wall Street to make what is called a "<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/foreign-exchange-funds-central-banks-fed-rate-hikes-carry-trade-2023-11">carry trade</a>": Investors borrow money from a country with low interest rates, invest it in bonds from a country where interest rates are high, and pocket the difference. In this case, that means moving money from the rest of the world and buying US assets, particularly government bonds. This trade has been hot since the start of the year — investment banks like JPMorgan and UBS recommended it to clients, and a Bloomberg index based on selling the lowest-yielding G10 currencies and buying the highest ones has already returned 7% this year. The Institute of International Finance reported that in May alone, Emerging Markets ex-China — where rates are also higher — saw bond-market inflows of $10.2 billion, mostly due to investors benefiting from carry trades like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.marketwatch.com/livecoverage/stock-market-today-dow-futures-dip-as-growth-concerns-linger/card/japanese-yen-strengthens-as-risk-aversion-rises-carry-trade-crumbles-9tGHrcickLndc749YzTO">selling Japanese yen</a> to buy Mexican pesos. These trades are "everywhere," Peter Schaffrik, a global macro strategist at RBC Capital Markets, told Bloomberg. And the more rates diverge, the more attractive this march of money from weak to strong becomes.What seems like a slam dunk for Wall Street is not such good news for either the US or the global economy. At a time when economies in Europe and elsewhere are losing momentum, sucking more money away from these economies will tighten financial conditions while they're trying to avoid a slowdown — especially in crucial regional data like <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/european-shares-fall-amid-data-deluge-1033460481">German industrial production</a>, which has come in soft of late. It will also weaken the euro, which will make it harder for the continent to import the energy it needs to fuel its economy and make it more expensive to buy American goods. And in Asian economies, where interest rates are already significantly lower than in the US, things could get even messier."We expect that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/japan-yen-slump-intervention-currency-buy-us-involvement-interest-rates-2024-5">Japan</a> and South Korea will face challenges balancing monetary policy to maintain stability as the dollar appreciates," Nigel Green, the CEO of deVere Group, a global wealth-management firm, told me. "I wouldn't be surprised if policymakers feel the need to intervene in the currency markets or adjust interest rates to manage these effects."For the US, more money sloshing onto America's shores has the opposite impact of what the Fed wants to achieve: It pushes up asset prices and loosens financial conditions. In other words, it makes it harder for the Fed to fight the inflation that is aggravating consumers."There are legitimate concerns that this influx of capital into the US will increase liquidity, driving up asset prices and inflationary pressure, making it more challenging for the Fed to lower rates," Green said. "Increased liquidity can lead to inflationary pressures, which the Fed might need to counteract by maintaining or even raising rates."As Green mentioned, there's a way for the Fed to fight back: hiking interest rates some more. But jacking up interest rates even further could finally break the back of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-hard-landing-economy-consumer-spending-slowdown-growth-gdp-2024-5#:~:text=Consumers%20are%20finally%20slowing%20their,and%20a%20weakening%20job%20market.">until now strong US consumer</a> and send us into a recession. It's the same calculation the ECB is making, though the EU's slowdown is more marked. Given these downsides, the Fed is unlikely to hike, which will create the perfect market for the carry trade to thrive. And as long as US data remains choppy — pointing to sticky inflation one day and disinflation the next — this carry-trade cash will end up sloshing around in the economy. This is a dynamic that central banks from countries already on their rate-cutting path will be watching. They're already seeing growth slow and, on top of that, will have money sucked away to the US, where data has been relatively strong through the first half of the year. Carry-trade cash exploits the dislocations between global economies that are keeping our policies from coordinating. We're in the early innings, but the longer this goes on, the more of an impact it will make. For Wall Street, that means <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-summer-worry-stock-market-crash-inflation-hamtons-vacation-2024-5">a summer of vigilance</a>. For economists, it means the picture of our economy that they're trying to cobble together with contradictory data is even blurrier. It's a time of increased uncertainty.<h2>Sticky-ing the landing</h2>There is, of course, hope that this divergence will be only a temporary state of affairs. If the US suddenly starts printing weak economic data, that will hasten the Fed's move to cut rates. And there are signs that EU inflation is stickier than policymakers would like, which could slow the pace of cuts enough for America to catch up.There are already signs of a slight tempering of America's red-hot economy: The household savings rate is at a 16-month low, disposable incomes have made only modest gains, and the amount that people have to pay on credit balances is elevated. The white-hot job market has cooled, and job openings have returned to prepandemic levels. But not every indicator is telling the story of a soft landing. On Friday, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-unemployment-rate-job-growth-looked-in-may-2024-6">May's jobs report</a> showed that the country created 272,000 jobs — way more than the 182,000 expected. The data seesaw stateside continues. On the other side of the Atlantic, there are signs that UK and EU inflation could be stickier than policymakers had foreseen. <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/interestrates/eurozone-inflation-rises-ahead-of-ecb-meeting-1033440963">EU inflation ticked up slightly to 2.6% in May</a>, surprising the ECB but not shocking it enough to stop a June rate cut. In the UK, stubborn services inflation, which came in at 5.9% for the month of April, may give the Bank of England reason to pause. Oxford Economics' Basic Vasiljev told me that this indicated that the EU and US were moving more in tandem than this policy lag suggests and the current policy divergence would remain short. Even the Bank of Canada, which cut its benchmark rate to 4.75% from 5% last week, is cautiously optimistic the dislocation will be momentary. "There are limits to how far we can diverge from the United States, but we're not close to those limits," Gov. Tiff Macklem said at the Bank of Canada's latest meeting. Not close… yet.This rosy outlook is not a guarantee: Wall Street still expects three cuts this year from the ECB and the <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/european-shares-fall-amid-data-deluge-1033460481">Bank of England</a>. Even in little clips of 0.25%, three cuts would create a divergence traders would exploit. And if September comes and the US is still hot, that exploitation could continue all year long, exacerbating the conditions that are keeping monetary policy out of sync. That sucking sound you'll hear all summer is the sound of Wall Street slurping money from Europe, Canada, the UK, and East Asia into US markets. Policymakers will have to recalibrate. This doesn't mean we won't stick a soft landing — especially if this disordered moment is brief — it just increases the odds of a bumpy ride until we get there.<a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/linette-lopez">Linette Lopez</a> is a senior correspondent at Business Insider.
