There are so many things that one can learn from <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, and the art of keeping employees motivated is one of them. On Friday, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/ratan-tata-is-not-stepping-down-from-tata-trusts-rubbishes-reports/articleshow/56018782.cms">chairman of Tata Trusts</a> called all employees of the Tata group "inheritors and custodians of the Trusts" and of its "belief in making a sustainable change" in society. 
 The <keyword id="123235" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Charitable-Trust">charitable trust</keyword> owns 66% of <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>, which is the holding entity of all companies controlled by the conglomerate that deals in a variety of interests, ranging from salt, cars, technology and steel.

"You bring your zeal, your vigor, your integrity and most importantly your hard work. It is because of you that we can derive and obtain the opportunity and the privilege to serve our community and through that, our nation," Tata wrote in a letter on the occasion of the 178th birth anniversary of Tata Trusts founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. It’s also the 125th year of the philanthropic organization. 
 
It was in 1892 that Tata Trusts was set up, in the form of the JN Tata Endowment, followed by Sir Ratan Tata trust in 1919, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in 1932, the JRD Tata Trust in 1944, the Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust Jamsetji Tata Trust in 1974 and lastly, the Tata Education and Development Trust in 2008. 
 
The trust deals in healthcare, water, rural upliftment, energy, education, relief, rehabilitation and individual grants, and boasts of the creation of institutes such as the Indian Institute of Science, Tata Memorial Hospital, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the National Centre for the Performing Arts, all reputed names in their respective fields. 
 However, only recently it was in the news because of former Tata Sons chairman <keyword id="6356895" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cyrus-Mistry">Cyrus Mistry</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/war-intensifies-cyrus-mistry-is-going-to-challenge-chandrasekarans-appointment-as-tata-sons-chairman/articleshow/56642005.cms">questioning its governance structure</a> and ambit of power. It was October 24, 2016 that Mystry was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/cyrus-mistry-removed-as-tata-sons-director/articleshow/57003221.cms">ousted from his post</a>, which led to the feud. 
 
Four months later, on February 21 2017, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/this-is-how-new-chairman-chandrasekaran-is-going-to-enhance-operational-expertise-at-tata/articleshow/57307123.cms">N. Chandrasekaran</a> was appointed the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/N-Chandrasekaran-takes-charge-as-Tata-Group-Chairman-this-is-what-he-said-after-taking-over-the-reins/articleshow/57267209.cms">new chairman</a> of the Tata group. Chandrasekaran had earlier served as the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/chandrasekaran-moving-out-of-tcs-may-be-alarming-for-most-profitable-it-company/articleshow/56564074.cms">CEO of TCS</a>. 
 
Chandrasekaran also wrote a letter of encouragement to his employees, saying that higher shareholder value and business performance can be achieved if the conglomerate focuses relentlessly on customers and use innovation to reinvent its businesses.

Ratan Tata calls Tata employees inheritors and custodians of Tata Trusts

<keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="97017" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="N-Chandrasekaran">N Chandrasekaran</keyword> on Wednesday asked all group employees to stay focussed on their businesses and welfare of stakeholders in wake of the NCLAT order that raised issue of his appointment as Executive Chairman of the company. In a message to the employees of the group, Chandrasekaran said Wednesday's "NCLAT ruling, which apart from other things, raises issues on my appointment as Executive Chairman of Tata Sons". He further said, "Tata Sons firmly believes in the strength of our case and will pursue the appropriate legal recourse".
 Going forward, he further said, "I assure you that we have set ourselves on a course that will make the <keyword id="6355725" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group">Tata Group</keyword> stronger and more vibrant than it has ever been before. I urge all employees to stay focussed on their businesses and the welfare of our stakeholders". Chandrasekaran said ever since he was asked to take on the role and responsibilities of Executive Chairman in February 2017, "our efforts have been primarily focused on: restoring stability and moving decisively towards a healthier financial position; conducting our businesses with the highest ethical standards, which the group has been known for over 150 years".
 He further said "honoring our commitments to all stakeholders and resolving outstanding issues; driving growth and transforming our businesses for the future" were also equally important issues. 
 "We will continue to work towards deepening the legacy of this unique institution," Chandrasekaran said.

Tata’s super app ‘Neu’ is all set to launch this week — here’s what to expect

 For the starters, Baristas at <keyword id="1397210" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Starbucks">Tata Starbucks</keyword> will now have a five-day week culture, ending the norm for employees to put in extra hours and days to serve customers.

Tata Starbucks wants to become more employee-friendly and lower down the attrition rate.

The package will be available for over 1,600 permanent employees in its fold — especially from engineering operations. “This year, Tata Motors’ employee cost-cutting plans are more aggressive than the previous times. The company is now seeking voluntary retirements from more than 1,600 people across all locations and hierarchies," Mint <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/tata-motors-to-offer-vrs-to-1-600-staff-as-slowdown-takes-a-toll-11574877056533.html">reports</a>. Tata Motors’ engineering employee count is also much higher than the industry average, and this move might rationalise it to improve efficiency. The automobile giant is aiming to reduce its employee cost for quite some time now. It had introduced a similar employee package in 2017 as well. Its employee cost rose to 10.7% of its net sales for the second quarter which almost doubled from . 5.9% last year. Job losses have become common in the automobile industry. The homegrown auto major suspended production, leading to plant shutdowns in Pune and Jamshedpur for a few days. It <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/slowdown-blues/maruti-suzuki-tata-motors-cut-production-festive-sales-get-lukewarm-response/story/383628.html">slashed passenger vehicle production by 63%</a> during the same time, while the overall sales declined by over 40%. During the quarter ending September, Tata Motors’ net sales also fell by 44% — registering a net loss of ₹1,281 crore. Tata Motors is the third biggie after BSNL and MTNL to dole out voluntary retirement package

New Delhi, Jun 11 () Workers of Tata Steel's Dutch operations at IJmuiden unit are worried and demanding job security from the management, labour union Federatie Nederlandse Vakverenigingen (FNV) said on Thursday.        On Wednesday, the workers of company's IJmuiden unit boycotted work and went on a strike, FNV said in a statement.        From 2 pm afternoon, workers at the ore preparation area of plant went on strike, affecting the supply of the raw material for the blast furnaces, pellet factory and sinter factory, it said.        In the statement, Roel Berghuis, spokesman of FNV, of which thousands of Tata Steel IJmuiden plant workers are members, said: "It is for the first time in 28 years that people at Tata Steel IJmuiden are on strike. That shows how much the people of Tata Steel Netherlands are concerned."        According to the Dutch labour union, the "inevitable move" was taken when the management of Tata Steel did not respond to the demands of the employees.        The workers want, among other things, the guarantee that there will be no redundancies and that no jobs will disappear.        "The Indian owners want to cut thousands of jobs at Tata Steel Europe. Last month, chairman of Tata Steel Netherlands Theo Henrar was suddenly laid off. Still, there has not been a proper explanation about that departure. They (workers) are fed up and want...the survival of Tata Steel in IJmuiden.         "Furthermore, the staff requires that agreements in the Employment Pact are extended until 2026 and that no parts of Tata Steel Netherlands are sold," it said.        In its response, Tata Steel said it recognises the uncertainty in the minds of the employees and respects the rights of the workers in IJmuiden steelworks.        In the current environment of global uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has been working with all stakeholders, including the unions in both Netherlands and the UK, to meet the challenges.         Tata Steel also said it had requested the union in the Netherlands to postpone industrial action so it could continue discussions and find the best way forward to meet everyone's interests, and added the industrial action will only put further pressure on the company's results as it continues to deal with the impact of lower steel demand caused by the pandemic.       It is important all stakeholders make every effort to keep the company in good health.        "We value the dialogue with our employee representatives and we will continue discussions with them. We have invited the FNV union for a conversation and while it has not responded, our door is still open and the company looks forward to an active engagement with the unions in the coming days," Tata Steel said. The <keyword id="6355725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group">Tata group</keyword> had tried to take over the company last year, but the talks fell through in <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/aviation/the-rise-the-fall-and-the-challenges-of-jet-airways/story/335811.html">November last year</a>. Ever since the airline went in for bankruptcy, the group’s view on it has changed. “There is no value in buying the company now anyway,” an official told ET. Bilateral rights on the other hand can provide Tatas with traffic rights on international routes. Jet Airways had been in trouble for years now piling up as much debt as ₹85 billion. The airline had tried to expand during tough times of high fuel prices and excessive competition, taking a hit on its margins. After multiple attempts to bail out the airline, its largest lender State Bank of India had stalled a credit line, which led to its grounding in April. The ₹10 trillion Tata Group may want some of Jet Airways’ parts after the airline’s employees decided to bid

Over 36% of the permanent employees will be retiring in the next 5 years.</li><li>The Government of India issued a new expression of interest for 100% sale of the troubled state-owned airline.</li><li>There are reports of interest from HIndujas and Tatas in bidding for the airline.</li></ul>The government wants to ensure that Air India is sold this time around, as it has also cut down the debt that the new owner will take onto the books. But there remains yet another hurdle that has been keeping the state-owned airline from being sold - its employees and their unions. According to a release from the <keyword id="149609" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Civil-Aviation">Ministry of Civil Aviation</keyword>, the airline has 17,984 employees, out of which 9,617 are permanent. Over 36% of the permanent employees will be retiring in the next 5 years - that is almost 3,000 of them. “The trade union representatives are said to have discussed with the management all the issues concerning their employment such as service-contracts, job-security, gratuity, pension and voluntary retirement scheme after the company goes into private hands,” a source told PTI after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/air-india-panel-discusses-privatisation-related-issues-of-employees/articleshow/73672621.cms">a panel </a>of Air India management and trade unions met in Delhi recently. These employees could now seek what other troubled state-owned companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/tata-motors-is-the-third-biggie-after-bsnl-and-mtnl-to-dole-out-voluntary-retirement-package/articleshow/72270927.cms">BSNL</a> and MTNL received. Voluntary retirement scheme for Air India - before or after the sale? The Indian government had retired over 92,700 employees via VRS for the employees of the debt-laden <keyword id="30351" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> and MTNL– the telecom giants that it’s trying to merge and revive. However, with Air India’s sale and privatization in mind, VRS could be a risky move as it is uncertain about the liability of the settlements. But it will also offer an opportunity for the government or the bidder to cut down on the number of Air India’s employees.

 And, there are other issues that have to be cleared by the buyer as well. As per the bid document, 3% of equity shares of Air India are to be offered to the permanent employees of Air India as stock options. However, employees’ dues of about ₹1383.7 crore will be cleared by the government, before the transaction closes. The Government of India’s new expression of interest for 100% sale of the troubled state-owned airline, has already taken a large chunk of the liability onto itself. As per the revised EoI, the bidding party will have to bear ₹23,286 crore of the total ₹60,000 crore debt of Air India. And the deadline for bidders is set on March 17. I’m not going to run a third airline (in addition to Vistara and AirAsia) unless we merge. There are issues. I will never say yes or no. I don’t know,” he told TOI. Interestingly, Air India was run by the Tata Group before the Indian government acquired a 49% stake in the airline in 1948. Air India may opt for a BSNL-like voluntary retirement scheme to shed employee cost along with debt

Former employees of the defunct carrier <keyword id="6373962" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kingfisher-Airlines">Kingfisher Airlines</keyword> are applying for jobs at soon-to-be launched <keyword id="2467342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> airline, a 51:49 joint venture between Tata Goup and Singapore Airlines. 
	 
	“The counsel for Kingfisher Airline has told us that since the airline has not been operating, no revenue has been generated and hence they cannot pay us. It is good news for us that Vistara is coming up because most of us have joined the new airline,” said a former employee of the beleaguered carrier. 
	 Apart from Tata-Singapore Airlines's Vistara, many have also joined <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo">Indigo</keyword>. “Both these airlines have Airbus 320 and since KFA had a fleet of Airbus 320, therefore, these suit us,” added the employee. 
	 
	It’s worth noting that Kingfisher airline has not paid its employees since 2012 and made promises of disbursal of salaries on several occasions. A section of the distressed employees have also submitted a plea in the Karnataka High Court for releasing the funds deposited with the court as a security. The employees had requested the Court to allow the management to access Rs 220 crore from the security (Rs 250 crore) deposited with the court, which came from UBHL stake sale to Diageo. 
	 
	Earlier this year, the employees also wrote to the labour Commission for the disbursal of the salary. Vijay Mallya was summoned by the chief labour commissioner to discuss the issue of unpaid salaries of the employees. 
	 
	Tata Group and Singapore Airline’s Vistara was scheduled to launch this month, however, aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation, has not yet issued the Scheduled Operator Permit to the airline. The airline took the delivery of its first aircraft Airbus-320 last month.
