<keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> today said it is in talks with the world's largest auto maker <keyword id="6361865" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Volkswagen">Volkswagen</keyword> for a possible partnership. 
 
The company is exploring various opportunities, including partnership in its new advanced modular platform (AMP) development, possibilities of a joint venture or a contract manufacturing with the German auto major, in its bid to scale up. 
 "I can only confirm that we are in talks but nothing to be announced yet," Tata Motors CEO &amp; MD <keyword id="6393593" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guenter-Butschek">Guenter Butschek</keyword> said. 
 
When asked how far the talks have progressed, he said: "We are in the midst of discussions. We will let you know in good time." 
 
Explaining the rationale behind such a move, Butschek said although the company has set sights on becoming among the top three passenger vehicle makers in India by 2019, it might not be enough to get the scale up effects. 
 
"Even if we get a large scale in the national business we might still not be up to the mark as far as scale effects are concerned," he said. 
 
"Therefore, we are, since a while, have been having intensive talks with different potential partners, who might join us on the AMP," Butschek added. 
 
It is aimed at bringing additional volumes through the new platform that the company will introduce to the market by 2018. 
 
"These additional volumes will bring higher economies of scale, which is going to give us the cost advantage and competitiveness," he added. 
 
The company is hoping to translate competitiveness into volume on one hand and into new feature capabilities on the other that will help it become more aggressive and desirable in the market place, he said. 
 
"This is the reason why we believe if we can find a partner it would be a very helpful strategic move," Butschek said. 
 
He, however, insisted that it needed to be the right partner in terms of alignment, on the objectives of joint development with the AMP as the reference point and right partner as far as volume is concerned. 
 
"Just getting a partner for the sake of getting one but not really adding substantial volume is not expected from such kind of partnership," he said. 
 
When asked what type of partnership would it be, a joint venture or a technical collaboration he said, "I am not ruling out one or or the other...It is always about the right fit." 
 
"If this is finally going to end up in a development JV or production JV or sharing of capacity contract manufacturing agreement, these are all subject for further discussion in order to make it a win-win for both the parties," Butschek said.

They don't see the kind of potential growth in any other market like in India. It's just not the growth rate, but the base is also very high.” 
 When Bernhard Maier took over as Skoda Auto's global CEO, he visited India soon after taking over. <keyword id="4581" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="general-motors">General Motors</keyword> CEO Mary Barra has visited twice in less than a year. Ford Motor executive chairman Bill Ford visited India last year to inaugurate the New Product Development Centre that will create the foundation for India products. 
 <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motor chairman Chung Mong-Koo is also expected to visit soon to announce the launch of the Kia brand in India. The country's <keyword id="9503441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="largest-carmaker-maruti-suzuki-india">largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India</keyword> on Thursday launched its vehicle lease subscription service for individual customers under 'Maruti Suzuki Subscribe' brand. The company said it has tied up with ORIX Auto Infrastructure Services Ltd, a subsidiary of ORIX Corporation, Japan, to launch the subscription service in India. The subscription service will begin as a pilot project in Gurugram and Bengaluru and will be initially available on Swift, Dzire, Vitara Brezza and Ertiga from Maruti Suzuki ARENA Channel and Baleno, Ciaz and XL6 from NEXA Channel, the company said in a regulatory filing. Maruti <keyword id="1500649" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suzuki-India">Suzuki India</keyword> joins rival <keyword id="108829" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor-India">Hyundai Motor India</keyword>, which had last year launched its subscription model initially in six cities across India as part of its partnership with self-drive car-sharing firm Revv. Similarly, MG Motor India also offers its subscription services through a strategic tie-up with Myles, the car sharing and car subscription company from Carzonrent. In May this year, German car maker Volkswagen had also launched its car-leasing schemes allowing customers to lease all BS-VI compliant cars in its portfolio with a minimum lock-in period ranging from 2-4 years. Maruti Suzuki launches vehicle lease subscription service

<ul><li><keyword id="6374528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="toyota">Toyota</keyword> will be launching <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>’s <keyword id="6379565" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="baleno">Baleno</keyword> under their brand starting next financial year.</li><li>Cross-badging is a concept that, in the past, has only yielded temperate results for automobile companies. </li><li>That being said, Suzuki’s and Toyota’s respective competitive advantages are complementary to each other which may play in their favour.</li></ul>A partnership that was cemented earlier this year between Maruti Suzuki and Toyota is bringing their first project to fruition. A crowd favorite, the Baleno will be the first vehicle to be cross-badged between the two companies. In the first year, somewhere between 20,000 to 25,000 Maruti Suzuki Balenos will be shipped off to the Toyota Motor Corporation. The <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Auto/YAsSEGIGNJpjFrNaJzKzdO/Baleno-to-be-the-first-Maruti-Suzuki-car-to-be-sold-as-a-Toy.html">report by Mint</a> indicates that this will be an annual exchange. Once Toyota has the cars, they will be selling them through their own dealership network starting Q1 of FY 2018-19. Their respective competitive advantages are complimentary in nature but might not be enough to solve the dilemma of how successful cross-badging will be in India. What is cross-badging? To cross-badge a car essentially means launching the same car under a different brand with some minor alterations that are, more often than not, only superficial. Even with the Baleno, plans indicate that the car will undergo some interior and exterior changes that could include alterations to the head lights, tail lamps and the front grill of the car. But, here’s the thing, cross-badging isn’t a concept that India is familiar with and past projects have performed the usual humdrum way. And, the Baleno isn’t the end of the road for Toyota either. The company has plans of launching Suzuki’s Brezza under their brand as well while Suzuki will introduce the Corolla under their banner. Mutual benefits This partnership utilises the <keyword id="1700148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Competitive-Advantage">competitive advantage</keyword> of each company in a complementary manner. It’s essentially <keyword id="1673374" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ricardo">Ricardo</keyword>’s trade theory playing out in real life where one entity trades its most efficient product against its counterpart’s most efficient product. David Ricardo developed the classical theory of comparative advantage in 1817 to explain why countries engage in international trade even when one country's workers are more efficient at producing every single good than workers in other countries. While Toyota has the hang of the executive sedan segment, they haven’t had much luck in the lower-end of the market. And the opposite is true for Maruti Suzuki. It’s not that Toyota hasn’t tried. The Etios was their attempt at cracking India’s most high-volume segment of <keyword id="6381299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="automobiles">automobiles</keyword>, but alas, the car wasn’t able to make a substantial mark. And, this isn’t only true with India. Toyota may be on the track to become to world’s third largest automobile player with investments all over the globe but they’re yet to capitalise in the densest markets around the world. With the Baleno and the Brezza, Toyota will have another shot at making an impact in the competitive hatchback segment of automobiles in India. More than dominating the market on product alone, economics of scale will also come into play once Suzuki starts manufacturing the Baleno from Toyota’s plant in Karnataka by repurposing the currently unutilised capacity of the hub. And it’s not that Suzuki will get the short end of stick. More than using the Corolla to further expand their market share in the executive sedan segment, Toyota’s pool of knowledge, when it comes to electrical vehicles (EVs), holds greater utility for the company. In the past, a similar partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki didn’t yield any results. Partnerships have were also pursued between Volkswagen and Tata as well as Mahindra and Ford without substantial outcomes. On the other hand, the Renault and Nissan alliance brought about the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano SUVs. Even the partnership between Volkswagen and Skoda yielded the Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid. All these cars did decently well in this country. The Suzuki and Toyota partnership can thus work either way, we’ll have to wait and watch.
