Within various withdrawal instruments, micro ATMs were the fastest growing payment infrastructure in FY22, according to a report by ICICI Securities. In fact, the deployment of micro ATMs outpaced the growth in cards, ATMs. “Lower commercial viability, especially in rural India, and increasing acceptance of mATM, resulted in most players opting for building mATM network over traditional ATM,” said the report. Cash withdrawals through micro ATMs grew 33% to ₹285 billion as of April 2022. Meanwhile, micro ATM deployment jumped by a strong 93%, followed by prepaid cards at 45%. What is a micro ATM? A micro ATM is like a mini version of an ATM. MicroATMs are portable devices that allow banking transactions including cash deposit, withdrawal and fund transfer using debit or RuPay cards. 4 year old Fino Payments Bank is the dominant player in the industry Fino Payments Bank, which calls itself the ‘digital banking partner’ for hardworking Indians, is the most dominant player in mATMs with a 38% market share in total deployed devices. It is followed by Mauritius based lender SBM Bank India with a 23% market share. Fino’s share in micro ATMs is more than that of the top 16 banks like HDFC Bank, SBI, Kotak, IDFC. Yes Bank however has an 11% market share in this space — and the only top tier bank to tap this opportunity. “SBM Bank of India, Yes Bank, NSDL Payment Bank and City Union Bank have been aggressively tapping the mATM space since the past 12 months,” the report says. Micro ATM transactions stood at ₹3 trillion growing by 18% in FY22. Micro ATM device networks grew at a robust 70% CAGR, while at the same period ATM networks grew by a muted 3% since March 2020. “Notably, unlike the credit market, fintechs and relatively small banks like Fino SBM Bank India, NSDL Payment Bank, and City Union dominate the mATM space. Cumulative market share of top-5 players stood at 82% as on April’22,” said the report. Cash remains an important mode of payment despite growing digital payments While digital payments are increasingly becoming popular, cash too remains an important mode of payment in day-to-day transactions. Data shows that in the US and South Korea, cash in circulation (as a % of GDP) increased to 9.5% and 7.6%, respectively, in 2020 (from 7.6% and 5.2% in 2015). Malaysia and Thailand, too, have witnessed an increase in cash in circulation. India is second in terms of highest ‘cash in circulation to GDP’ ratio as of 2020, followed by Thailand, Russia and the US. “Due to the pandemic, cash withdrawals in India declined by 13% to 28.9 trillion in FY21. However, with economies returning to normal pace, low-value cash transactions are expected to rise again,” said the report. India remains a cash economy, which is why cash in circulation to GDP touched 14%, higher than pre-demonetisation level. However, nearly 47% and 40% of households do not have access to bank branches and ATMs, respectively, within 2 kms of their homes. All the nine latest additions have been reported from a single laboratory in the national capital, which accounts for nearly half of the total cases of new mutant coronavirus strain. The <keyword id="751504" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Institute-of-Genomics-and-Integrative-Biology">Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology</keyword> (IGIB) have reported all the new nine cases detected on Monday. The <keyword id="6367874" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-centre-for-disease-control">National Centre for Disease Control</keyword> (NCDC) have also reported 8 cases till date. Together, NCDC and IGIB have detected 18 of the total 38 cases. Earlier, 4 new cases of the UK strain were detected on January 1, when the total count had reached 29. A government official said all the 38 persons have been kept in single-room isolation in designated health care facilities while their close contacts have also been put under quarantine. "Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, family contacts and others. Genome sequencing on other specimens is underway," the official added. The health ministry stated that the situation is under watch and regular advice is being provided to the states for enhanced surveillance, containment, testing and dispatch of samples to INSACOG labs. The samples have so far been sequenced in six of the 10 designated labs across the country. LG launches truly wireless earbuds in India, pricing starts at ₹24,990

On the efficacy of Covishield, he noted that the company has proven in its trials that it has a 100 per cent efficacy on hospitalisation, implying that there were zero hospitalisations found in the people who took the vaccine globally. "The efficacy results of the vaccine are quite high if it is administered in 2-doses within a gap of 2 - 3months," Poonawalla said. SII's Oxford-Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine to cost $3-4 to Indian government, price likely to be double in private markets

New Delhi, A stalemate continued on Monday between the government and a representative group of thousands of protesting <keyword id="45092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="farmers">farmers</keyword>, as the unions stuck to their demand for the repeal of three farm laws right from the beginning of the meeting even as the <keyword id="6364618" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministers">ministers</keyword> listed various benefits of the Acts. The two sides took a lunch break after just about one hour of talks, sources said, during which the three central ministers went into a huddle to discuss the way forward while the union leaders had the langar food arranged by them, as they have been doing for the last few times. However, unlike the last round of talks on December 30, the ministers did not join the union leaders for the langar food and were seen having their own discussion in a separate room during the break. The break continued for more than an hour with no signs of any breakthrough as the government also remained firm on not repealing the laws and is believed to have suggested a panel to take the matter forward. The first hour of talks focussed only on the three laws and the other key demand of farmers for a legal guarantee to the <keyword id="76332" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Minimum-Support-Price">Minimum Support Price</keyword> (MSP) procurement system did not come up for discussions. <keyword id="65264" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Kisan-Union">Bharatiya Kisan Union</keyword> leader Rakesh Tikait, who is participating in the meeting, told over the phone during the break that the first hour of discussion remained focussed on the three laws. "Our demand is the repeal of the laws. We will not agree to any alternatives such as the setting of the committee," he said. Asked if there could be a concrete outcome from the meeting, Tikait said, "I don't think so. They have to take back the laws for us to end the protest and go back to our homes." Thousands of farmers, mainly from <keyword id="6354953" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab">Punjab</keyword>, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, are protesting at various Delhi borders for over a month against the three laws. They have stayed put despite heavy rains and waterlogging at protest sites over the last couple of days, besides severe cold weather conditions prevailing in and around the national capital. The talks are still on and there has not yet been any discussion on the second agenda pertaining to giving legal backing to MSP, Tikait said. Another union representative, Kavitha Kurungati of Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch, said, "The standoff continues as the government is talking about benefits of the laws and we are asking for the repeal of those laws." No discussion has yet happened on the MSP, she said. "We are waiting for the ministers to get back into the meeting (after the break). They seem to be in a huddle," she later said. Enacted in September 2020, the government has presented these laws as major farm reforms and aimed at increasing farmers' income. During the meeting, the government listed various benefits from the three laws, enacted a few months ago, but farmers kept insisting that the legislation must be withdrawn to address their apprehensions that the new Acts would weaken the MSP and mandi systems and leave them at the mercy of big corporates. The government has maintained that these apprehensions are misplaced and has ruled out repealing the laws. <keyword id="86736" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-agriculture">Union Agriculture</keyword> Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Railways, <keyword id="84" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commerce">Commerce</keyword> and Food Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce Som Parkash, who is an MP from Punjab, are holding the talks with the representatives of 41 farmer unions at the Vigyan Bhawan. On December 30, the sixth round of talks was held between the government and the farmer unions, where some common ground was reached on two demands -- decriminalisation of stubble-burning and continuation of power subsidies. However, no breakthrough could be reached on the two main demands of the protesting farmers -- a repeal of the three recent farm laws and a legal guarantee to the MSP procurement system.
