But its valuation raised many eyebrows! Now that a month and a half has gone by since its listing, time is apt to examine if this gamble paid off. Will <keyword id="93460" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hyundai-india" source="Orion">Hyundai India</keyword> justify its high valuation? Or does the listing highlight broader questions about the overheated valuation dynamics of Indian markets? A record-breaking <keyword id="19898327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo" source="keywords">IPO</keyword> but questions remain Hyundai Motor India’s mega Initial Public Offering (IPO), launched in October 2024, broke records by raising ₹27,870 crore, making it India’s largest-ever IPO. The offer was oversubscribed by 2.37 times, highlighting robust demand. But many investors remained sceptical: was this IPO an honest attempt to expand Hyundai’s footprint in India or was it trying to offer a way to cashout for existing investors and promoters? Or perhaps, is it an attempt by the Korean chaebol — a large family-owned business conglomerate — to break free from the aforementioned “Korean Discount”? When shares listed on October 22, these concerns seemingly weighed on the minds of most investors and the stock promptly dipped 5% below the issue price on the day. A tepid grey market performance had already foreshadowed this muted debut in the Indian markets. Now, after almost 35 trading sessions on Indian market, the stock remains almost exactly at price it listed on October 22 at Rs 1820—no gain, no loss. <h3>The gamble of hyper-valuation</h3>Much of this hesitation stemmed from Hyundai’s valuation. Since entering the Indian market in 1996, the automaker has sold over 8 million vehicles and firmly occupies the second spot in the domestic passenger vehicle market, trailing only Maruti Suzuki. The stock of the company declined 4.09 per cent to trade at Rs 1,097.65 apiece on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). On the BSE, scrip of Tata Motors dropped 3.69 per cent to trade at Rs 1,102.40 per piece. The 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled 767.65 points or 0.94 per cent to trade at 81,099.90, while NSE Nifty fell 206.70 points to 24,804.20. On Thursday, Tata Motors reported an 11 per cent year-on-year dip in total sales at 71,996 units in July. The company had sold 80,633 units in July 2023. Its total domestic sales dipped 11 per cent and stood at 70,161 units last month as against 78,844 units in the year-ago period. The auto major said its consolidated net profit increased 74 per cent to Rs 5,566 crore in the June 2024 quarter, aided by robust performance by Jaguar Land Rover as well as domestic business. It had posted a net profit of Rs 3,203 crore in the April-June quarter of last fiscal. The company's total income increased to Rs 1,09,623 crore for the period under review against Rs 1,03,597 crore in the June quarter in FY24. On a standalone basis, the automaker said its net profit stood at Rs 2,190 crore compared to a net loss of Rs 64 crore in the year-ago period. Total income rose to Rs 18,851 crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal against Rs 16,132 crore in the corresponding period of FY24. Jaguar Land Rover reported a revenue of 7.3 billion pounds, the best first-quarter revenue on record, up 5 per cent versus the June quarter of FY24. The company also said its board has approved the Scheme of Demerger of Tata Motors Ltd (TML) into two separate listed companies. As part of the scheme, TML will demerge its commercial vehicle undertaking, involving the commercial vehicle business (all the assets, liabilities and employees relating to the commercial vehicle business) and all its related investments, into TMLCV. Further, pursuant to the scheme, the existing passenger vehicle business in TMPV, will be merged into TML, the existing listed entity. Upon the scheme becoming effective, both TMLCV and TML will be renamed, resulting in two separate listed entities. As part of the MoU inked between the parties, 250 new fast-charging stations for electric commercial vehicles would be set up across the country. Strategically located in and around over 50 cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Kochi, among others, these new charging stations will significantly increase the existing network of 540 commercial vehicle charging points, Tata Motors said in a statement. Basis its understanding of the commercial EV movement, the commercial vehicle major will recommend optimal locations and nearest dealerships for setting up the fast-charging stations, the company said. While Delta Electronics will supply the necessary hardware, Thunderplus Solutions will install and operate them, it added. E-commerce companies, parcel and courier service providers, among other industries, are increasing the adoption of commercial EVs for last-mile deliveries. "Expanding the available charging infrastructure on high-use routes will encourage more customers to opt for electric commercial vehicles and improve vehicle uptime, resulting in higher revenues and better profitability, while contributing towards a cleaner, greener environment," Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles Vice President and Business Head -- SCV &amp; PU -- Vinay Pathak said. Currently, Tata Motors sells Ace EVs to cater to various last-mile delivery requirements. The model is supported by over 150 electric vehicle service centres across the country. Tata Motors ties up with two firms to expand charging infra for electric CVs

The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 5,496.04 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing. Total consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 1,19,986.31 crore, as compared to Rs 1,05,932.35 crore in the year-ago period. In <keyword id="20028449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q4" source="keywords">Q4</keyword> FY24, Tata Motors said all three auto businesses delivered strong performance. The company's British arm Jaguar Land Rover had "another record-breaking quarter in Q4 FY24. Revenue for the quarter was 7.9 billion pounds, up 11 per cent versus Q4 FY23", Tata Motors said. JLR's Profit After Tax (PAT) in Q4 was 1.4 billion pounds as against a profit of 259 million pounds in the same quarter a year ago, it added. The Board of Directors have recommended a final dividend of Rs 3 per ordinary share and Rs 3.10 per 'A' ordinary share and a special dividend of Rs 3 per ordinary share and Rs 3.10 per 'A' ordinary share subject to approval by the shareholders. For the fiscal ended March 31, 2024, consolidated net profit was at Rs 31,806.75 crore as compared to Rs 2,689.87 crore in the previous fiscal, the company said. In FY24, total consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 4,37,927.77 crore as compared to Rs 3,45,966.97 crore in FY23. <keyword id="20430970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors-group" source="keywords">Tata Motors Group</keyword> Chief Financial Officer, PB Balaji said in FY24 the Tata Motors Group delivered its highest-ever revenues, profits, and free cash flows. "The India business is now debt-free, and we are on track to become net automotive debt-free on a consolidated basis in FY25. The businesses are executing well on their distinct strategies and therefore, we are confident of sustaining this strong performance in the coming years," he added. JLR's revenues for FY24 were 29 billion pounds, its highest-ever full-year revenue and up 27 per cent compared to the prior year, while PAT for FY24 was 2.6 billion pounds. "We have delivered a record financial performance for the company, generating free cash flow of 2.3 billion pound, enabling us to reduce net debt to 0.7 billion pound," JLR Chief Executive Officer Adrian Mardell said. The foundation of this performance was the sustained global demand for JLR's modern luxury vehicles, led by Range Rover and Defender brands, underpinned by a consistent focus on operational improvement, he added. Tata Commercial Vehicles' Q4 FY24 revenue was at Rs 21,600 crore, while FY24 revenue was Rs 78,800 crore. In Q4 FY24, domestic wholesale commercial vehicles (CV) volumes were 1,04,600 units, lower 7 per cent year-on-year on account of increased pre-buy in Q4 FY23 due to BS6 Phase II transition, the company said. Tata Motors Ltd Executive Director Girish Wagh said the Indian CV industry grew by a modest 2 per cent in volumes during FY24, impacted by a high base effect of FY23, elections held across five states and the announcement of general elections. "Our sharp focus on profitable growth resulted in the CV business recording its highest-ever revenues of Rs 78,800 crore and profits of Rs 6,100 crore in FY24. Going forward, we will intensify our efforts to grow market share, profitably and consistently, in every business segment by delivering more value to customers with innovative products, smarter services and holistic mobility solutions," he added. Tata Passenger Vehicles clocked revenue of Rs 14,400 crore in Q4 while for the full year FY24 it was at Rs 52,400 crore. In Q4, Passenger Vehicle (PV) volumes were at 1,55,600 units, up 14.8 per cent from the year-ago period, supported by new SUV facelifts and multiple power trains, the company said. "Passenger vehicle sales in India set a record in FY24 with over 4.2 million units sold, driven by SUVs (50 per cent of overall sales) and emission-friendly powertrains. Tata Motors recorded its third consecutive year of highest sales volumes with 6 per cent growth in wholesales and 10 per cent in retail sales over FY23," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Managing Director Shailesh Chandra said. The company sold 73,800 EVs during the year, marking a 48 per cent increase as compared to FY23 and crossed a milestone of 1.5 lakh cumulative EV production, he added. The stock went up 5.73 per cent to Rs 2,121.30 on the BSE. On the NSE, it climbed 6.32 per cent to Rs 2,123. TVS Motor Company on Wednesday said its net profit increased 15 per cent to Rs 387 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2024, riding on robust sales. The company had reported a net profit of Rs 336 crore in the January-March period of the previous fiscal. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 10,042 crore in the period under review compared with Rs 8,031 crore in the fourth quarter of FY23. In the fourth quarter, the company said its overall <keyword id="19948209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler" source="keywords">two-wheeler</keyword> and three-wheeler sales, including exports, grew by 22 per cent to 10.63 lakh units compared to 8.68 lakh units in the same period of the 2022-23 fiscal. For the year ended on March 31, 2024, the company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,686 crore as against Rs 1,329 crore a year ago. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 39,145 crore in FY24 over Rs 31,974 crore in the 2022-23 fiscal. TVS Motor shares climb over 6% after March quarter earnings

Tata Motors posts net profit of ₹3,203 cr in Q1 on improved JLR performance

The auto major has cut the price of Nexon.ev by up to Rs 1.2 lakh and now the model price starts at Rs 14.49 lakh. Similarly, the company has reduced the prices of Tiago.ev by up to Rs 70,000 with the base model now starting at Rs 7.99 lakh, Tata Motors said in a statement. Introductory prices of the recently-launched <keyword id="20078457" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="punch-ev" source="keywords">Punch.ev</keyword> remain unchanged as they already factor in reduction in battery cost in the foreseeable future, it added. "Battery costs constitute a substantial part of the overall cost of an EV. "With battery cell prices having softened in the recent past and considering their potential reduction in the foreseeable future, we have chosen to proactively pass on the resulting benefits directly to customers," <keyword id="20078455" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-passenger-electric-mobility" source="keywords">Tata Passenger Electric Mobility</keyword> (TPEM) Chief Commercial Officer Vivek Srivatsa said. In 2023, the EV segment grew by over 90 per cent against the 8 per cent growth recorded by the PV industry, it said. This growth momentum has continued in 2024 as well with EV sales registering a 100 per cent year-on-year growth in January 2024. In addition, Tata Motors’ domestic business also delivered an improvement in margins across segments, helping the company post its highest-ever consolidated revenue of ₹1.06 lakh crore in Q4, registering a growth of 35% on year. “Tata Motors executed a strong show across key verticals in Q4 FY23 with commercial vehicles earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) margins crossing the 10% mark after 4 years and JLR delivering a strong £815 million free cash flow,” said the analysts at Motilal Oswal. Tata Motors declared a dividend of ₹2 per ordinary share, its first since FY16. The Indian business’ net debt stood at ₹6,200 crore in FY23, which is the lowest in 15 years. In a post-earnings call, the luxury car maker said that its current order book stands at 2 lakh units, and that the overall demand outlook remains healthy. Of this, 1.5 lakh orders are for high-margin cars like the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender. The company has planned a ramp up of capacities during FY24, with capital expenditure budgeted at £3 billion, up from £2.35 billion in FY23. Overall, JLR is targeting volumes of 4 lakh units in FY24 which is a growth of 25% when compared to FY23’s volumes of 3.21 lakh units. Thanks to improving margins and volumes, JLR is aiming to reduce its debt to £2 billion from £3 billion during FY24, with a target of becoming net debt free in FY25. The brokerage added that it expects the company’s revenue to grow at a 20.1% compounded annual growth rate over FY23-25. “It will benefit from the commercial vehicle upcycle and stable growth in passenger vehicles, company-specific volume/margin drivers, and a sharp improvement in free cash flow as well as reduction in net debt in both JLR and the India businesses,” the Motilal Oswal report said, explaining its bullish outlook. JLR is also witnessing a cyclical recovery, supported by a favourable product mix,” said analysts at Motilal Oswal. “However, supply-side issues will delay the recovery process. While there will be no near-term catalysts from the JLR business, the recovery in the India business (~50% of the sum of the parts (SoTP) will continue,” added the report. Adding to the investor cheer, in March, the automaker sold 46,847 cars, overtaking rival Hyundai in the domestic passenger vehicle sales segment. In comparison, Hyundai sold 45,703 cars during the same month. Tata Motors registered a 27% on-year increase in passenger vehicles sales for March, far ahead of Hyundai, which registered a growth of 4.4%.
