This is why when I first learned of coto, a women-only community building and consultation app, I couldn’t help but feel uncertain of one of the app’s founders being a man. But I persevered. As I looked into <keyword id="23309110" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tarun-Katial" source="keywords">Tarun Katial</keyword>, one of the founders, it slowly dawned on me that he once led several beloved television shows I’d grown up watching — I’m talking Kaun Banega Crorepati, <keyword id="20458721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kyunki-saas-bhi" source="keywords">Kyunki Saas Bhi</keyword> Kabhi Bahu Thi and <keyword id="1679765" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jassi-Jaissi-Koi-Nahi" source="Orion">Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahi</keyword>. Did I freak out? Yes. Did this make me feel the slightest bit better about him founding a women-only app? Guilty. However, I decided to put my personal biases aside, meet him and hear from him what he had to say about his decision to be a part of the app. <h2><keyword id="19903931" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="KBC" source="keywords">KBC</keyword> to Big Boss</h2>To call Tarun a chill and laid-back person would be the understatement of the century. I felt immediately at ease in his presence. Most of all, he seemed open to talking about anything under the sky. While I was curious about his startup journey, we decided to start at the very beginning of his career — cause how does a certified media guy go from television and radio to a cause-based app? After a brief stint in advertising, Tarun directly went to work in television — on a show like KBC and under an TV aficionado like Sameer Nair, no less. He led Star Network and Sony’s content teams in various capacities in the late 90s and early 2000s — a golden era of <keyword id="19981325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-television" source="keywords">Indian television</keyword> if there ever was one. From helping Big B himself rehearse his lines ahead of the iconic show to helping bring like Bigg Boss to the country, Tarun did it all. And this is probably where his romance with Indian television took root. So, how did he master the skill of targeting the right pulse of his viewers? <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113064627" title="Amitabh Bachchan almost didn’t host Kaun Banega Crorepati! So how did the show’s makers convince Big B?" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> <h2>A master at understanding his audience </h2>When asked if TRP was the main metric television producers use to weigh the success of a show, Tarun shook his head, smiling enigmatically. “The people will tell you before any other metric,” he said. Elaborating on this, he fondly recalled the days when KBC had just begun. He spoke of how he would hear the now-familiar introductory music of the show drifting from the apartments in his building as he would go down the stairs while leaving for the studio at 9 PM everyday. “Things like that tell you what you need to know,” he added. And I fully believe him. His work under Sameer Nair was hardly the only noteworthy thing he did during his television career. Throughout his tenure at Starplus and Sony, Tarun experimented with various show formats. He brought in several shows from the West to India and worked on tweaking them to fit the Indian audience’s rather picky palate. He brought other super-hit reality shows like Indian Idol and Fear Factor to our screens— with some of these shows running to date. What he’d said about mapping consumer trends years ago holds true today as well: Tarun Katial ultimately draws motivation from his consumers. <h2>The audience that matters most </h2>Tarun’s experience with reality TV was all well and good. But what was truly juicy was the amount of time he’d spent making women-oriented shows. As mentioned before, he was behind the legendary serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. “KBC and Kyunki both aired the same year. That serial gave us one of the most prominent female politicians of the country,” he said, referring to Smriti Irani. “And I also met my wife on the sets of that show,” he grinned sheepishly. After that, he went on to contribute to Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahi — which launched television superstar Mona Singh. And after he’s spent years steering content that connected with Indian women and gave a platform to the quintessential badass female lead, we will take the risk of labelling him a feminist. Later, as CEO of Big FM, Reliance Broadcast Network and ZEE5, Katial expanded into radio and digital streaming, keeping pace with the changing media landscape over the years. Even here, he seemed particularly inclined to bring shows with nationalistic and feminist angles to the platforms. <h2>Tarun’s pivot to tech </h2>Tarun seems to enjoy disruption (his words, not mine) when it comes to his career choices. He describes himself as a ‘Zero to One’ guy, a term used by legendary investor Peter Thiel for the act of creating a product or service that didn't exist before. Tarun claims to prefer flitting from one project to another. And it was his time with ZEE5 that culminated in an affair with the world of tech. He began pursuing a degree in <keyword id="19986189" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-transformation" source="keywords">Digital Transformation</keyword> at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, where he got to see the potential of AI — something he went on to capitalise on. Around the time of his studies coming to an end, his wife experienced online harassment. To Tarun, the natural trajectory was to come up with a solution. Leveraging blockchain technology, it also allows users to monetise their contributions through coto Gains, a digital currency within the app. Scrolling through the app and showing me its various features, Tarun showed how many women had managed to monetise their areas of expertise. “Financial independence is extremely important for women today and we wanted to make sure that coto allowed them the opportunity to attain this,” he said. With more than 10,000 communities focused on topics such as health, wellness, and financial independence, coto claims to foster <keyword id="20960365" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="female-empowerment" source="keywords">female empowerment</keyword> while maintaining a strict no-advertising policy. What I gathered from the interaction was that Katial’s pivot to tech wasn't just about launching another app; it was about addressing real societal needs he had observed throughout his life’s experiences. Me and another friend of mine recommended that we should go to the police station. Now the reason she gave me was that ‘even if I report, what real action would be taken even if they find the person?” he added. Forty six-year-old Tarun Katial has been in the media and entertainment industry for over two decades. He has retained top executive positions in brands like <keyword id="17943" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="star-india" source="Orion">Star India</keyword>, Sony Entertainment and Reliance Broadcast Network. Eve World became a reality in June 2021 as a first-of-its-kind women-only platform that aims to empower women to express their opinion, create content and form communities without worrying about the consequences. According to the National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma, cases of online harassment grew nearly five fold in 2020. “While earlier, we would record 300 complaints of online harassment, this shot up to 1,500 post the COVID-19 pandmeic,” she<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/ahmedabad/after-covid-cases-of-online-harassment-spiked-by-5-times-7137386/"> said</a> in January 2021. In the USA, four in ten women admitted to have faced online harassment, according to a <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2021/01/13/the-state-of-online-harassment/">report </a>published by Pew Research Center in January this year. However, it does raise questions whether creating a separate space for women would further isolate them from the general public. Commenting on the same, Katial highlighted that this is why they went with the tagline “We can’t change the world for you, but we can create a better one for you.” Pritam Baruah, Dean of School of Law at BML Munjal University, told Business Insider, “In the larger context, however, isolation will not be the lens through which they will be viewed. There is the freedom to form exclusive groups in the marketplace of platforms and each will serve its purpose and constituency." Eve World is trying to build more than just social media Eve World will use this capital to launch the platform in the January-March quarter of 2022. The company aims to launch worldwide, including countries like the US and UK, where female participation in the digital arena is higher. But it will start off with countries like India, Middle East and Indonesia, where the population is larger and the company believes that it can add some value by giving women their space. On the face of it, Eve World has been built on a creator partnership, something like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, where the people on the platform are running the show. But there is an additional layer of blockchain technology added to the platform, which will allow Eve World’s users to get rewarded for each action on the platform. The reward can either be virtual tokens or points and can be used for a range of use cases — including consulting doctors and mental health professionals on the platform, shopping or even to buy non-fungible tokens (NFTs) at a discount on the platform. It will generate revenue by charging micro-entrepreneurs to promote their businesses. Eve World will set up a two-way authentication to ensure only women are using the platform. Katial claimed that 70% of its workforce at Eve World are going to be women as they understand these issues much better. The company has already raised capital from Singapore-based Jungle Ventures, one of the largest independent early and growth stage venture capital firms in Southeast Asia. The details of these transactions are undisclosed. “What used to happen on the street till a decade ago, in urban India, has now moved to the internet, under the garb of anonymity… Women were losing their freedom to express themselves because of the kinds of gender bias, the kind of trolling, the kind of abuse that they are facing...Women on the internet face much more [consequences] than any man would on the same comment that gets posted,” Katial said. The goal of this industry-wide effort is to empower consumers with information and tools to assist them in making informed choice with regard to viewing decisions for them and their families, while at the same time, nurturing creativity and providing creators the freedom to tell the finest stories. By aiming to do what is best for both consumers and creators as guiding principles, the Code intends for India to be one of the most dynamic and fastest growing entertainment industries in the world. To give consumers more choice and control, the Universal Self-Regulation Code includes a framework for age classification and content descriptions for titles as well as access control tools. The Code also introduces a clear, transparent and structured grievance redressal and escalation mechanism for reporting non-compliance with the prescribed guidelines. As a part of this mechanism, each OCCP will set-up a Consumer Complaints Department and/or an internal committee, as well as an advisory panel which will deal with complaints, appeals and escalations. Most of the major streaming services have adopted the Code and we look forward to others joining.” he added. The Code is effective from 15 August 2020 and allows OCCPs to comply with all the guidelines in a time bound manner. Each signatory to the code has agreed to appoint an external advisor as part of the grievance redressal mechanism within 60 days from today.

Saxena claims that the other model was working just fine, both parents and students enjoyed their method of skill development in a creative manner. Saxena’s seven-year-old daughter was also a user of the platform. However, Uable decided to pivot its business model to focus on a much larger audience. This switch in model was one of the reasons why Chiratae Ventures had decided to back the company in the first place. The company decided to move on to become a social media platform for teens as there were no dependencies on convincing parents to buy the product for their kids or on salespeople to sell the product. “That [the previous model] becomes a very non-scalable or very different proposition that I didn’t want to do as a founder or a team member as well,” Saxena told Business Insider. Previously, Saxena has built two edtech ventures — chain of institutes Lakshya and edtech company <keyword id="2016957" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vedantu" source="Orion">Vedantu</keyword>. Where does the social network come into play? Saxena explained that Uable is a mix of LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook, but only for teens. It also helps students explore academic, career and learning opportunities. “Teenage is a great age to build a social product for… They spend so much time on the Instagrams of the world, Snapchats of the worlds. What they end up consuming, I mean it’s okay, I won’t say everything is crap. But at the end of the day what I believe is that social platforms need to change and become more and more valuable,” he added. Saxena said, “The core value proposition for Uable is this is the place where a teenager comes, can explore a diverse set of interests right from gaming design, art and design, love and relationship, career, skills, exams. We have a club on exams also if you want any help, if you want to join any study group also. So you explore your interests, you make new friends… Teenagers are looking to make interest-based friends and expand their network. There are only two kinds of crowd allowed on the platform. First, the teens themselves. Second, verified businesses that serve this segment or have opportunities for them. It is the second set of users that offers monetisation opportunities for Uable. The company rewards teens in the form of virtual coins to use each feature on the platform — liking photographs, uploading content, interacting with others and more. These coins can then be used to avail discounts on the sellers and businesses listed on the platform. Teens can report any negative comments on the platform, the content would be taken down and users may be blocked too. Uable will also bar the use of certain words on the platform — both publicly and in private chats. The company has however ensured that it would not be reading out any of the private chats of these teens, respecting their privacy, but will enable some alerts for certain words to prevent bullying on the platform. How this former Vedantu cofounder is taking on Instagram and Snapchat to build social media for teens

Hotstar too set aside at least ₹120 crore to make seven originals across languages. India’s homegrown platform Zee5 however is playing the numbers game. “Zee5 has already invested in over 100 originals till date. But we believe that there’s a lot of room for regional content in this country. There are many stories to be told. Zee5 will do about 70-80 originals this coming year,” Zee5 CEO Tarun Katial told Business Insider India in an interview. Original shows and exclusive movies In addition to original shows, it is planning <a href="http://financialexpress.com/brandwagon/tarun-katial-on-why-zee5-is-more-than-a-video-streaming-app/1874856/">to produce 30-40 movies</a> across languages which will be exclusively streamed on the platform. Katial says that Zee5 wants to be a ‘super app’ for entertainment. At present, Zee5 has over 1,153 shows with 70 originals and 3,147 movies on its platforms. It also live streams all its 45 channels just like Hotstar. Zee5 expects this strategy to bring in more subscribers. It expects to have 15 million daily active users and 100 million monthly users by March. It had around 8 million daily active users in December, and has been operational for two years. OTT platform is not overcrowded, says Katiyal In spite of the presence of many more platforms like SunNxt, Voot, SonyLiv and many more, Katiyal believes that the Indian OTT market isn’t overcrowded. “While there are a lot of OTT platforms in India, it finally comes down to those OTT players who have enough content to play this out,” he said. A large base of content can be provided by platforms that have been in the television business. “Broadcasters eventually have a meaningful edge in this business because of their ability to reuse their content and their legacy of having built years and years of content is far better than anybody else,” he said. Going Global With strong roots in regional content, Zee5 is all set to take its battle with Netflix, Prime Videos in the international markets as well. In fact, they are using the same success mantra — local content to local audiences. Zee5 plans to release 80 original shows this year across Indian languages

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Content streaming platform Zee5 on Tuesday said it has partnered with edu-tech startup Eduauraa to offer educational content to users through its platform.
As part of the partnership, users buying one-year subscription of Zee5 before March 31, 2020 will get access to six months of free content from Eduauraa.
"Our larger vision at Zee5 is to build a large repository of purposeful content across genres. With Eduauraa on board, we will be able to address the educational needs to young students across the country," Zee5 India CEO Tarun Katial told reporters here.
He added apart from education, the company is looking at other areas as well to strengthen the offerings on the platform.
Minister of Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank', who was present at the event, said digital transformation of education will provide easy access to content and democratise education for masses.
"It should be our endeavour to see more innovation in the learning ecosystem that will allow each child to discover his strengths and abilities and fulfil his dreams in a digital world," he added.
Eduauraa founder and CEO Akanksha Chaturvedi said the company provides educational content in Hindi and English for students of class 6-12 across CBSE, ICSE and seven state boards.
"Concept-based learning as per Board syllabus will be delivered through interactive video lectures. Students will also get access to e-books and practice test papers," she added.
The company has about 100 employees and a team of 35 teachers to manage content. KRH SR BAL

Zee5 partners Eduauraa to offer educational content

 Content wars Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are producing India content, wooing its audiences with path-breaking content. Some of their series like Sacred Games, Leila, Made in Heaven and 4 More Shots Please enjoy the same popularity as top-rated TV shows in India. Hotstar which leads the race with its sports programming and screening of globally popular shows like Game of Thrones, also recently put out an Indian adaptation of the popular US show The Office. Zee5 and ALTBalaji both have struck a chord with Indian audiences with their Hindi TV series programming.
