Had it been 2010 or 2012, TV shows like Yeh Moh Moh Ke Dhaage, Jaat Ki Jugni, Tu Sooraj Main Saanjh, Piyaji, Nach Baliye 8 would have never dared to open their seasons in mid April. No the high level of mercury or power cuts isn’t the reason for it.  West has been binging on <keyword id="45225" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Television-shows">television shows</keyword> on the Internet for long. India is waking up to the concept, thanks to better connectivity and high resolution <keyword id="559549" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="video-streaming">video streaming</keyword>. But, has binging caught on as a trend? The answer is both yes and no. 
 
Watching serials like a complete marathon, be it those international entertainment on Star World or some Pakistani serials on Zindagi. Like, if you are living in Mumbai, Lucknow, or Delhi or even Bengaluru – you sure have attempted to catch those Pakistani serials. Zingadi Gulzar Hai, Humsafar, Aunn Zara so on and so forth!

But, experts do feel binge watching will soon catch up with the country that has been long waiting to join the west in this segment.

And when all the episodes that we wish to watch are available back-to-back, the joy of watching truly increases manifold, and how!

But hey, who cares when your favourite ‘Breaking Bad’ is running an interesting storyline that you wouldn’t want to miss for life! 
 
In India, binge watching is yet to be a trend except for in mega cities. Reasons for this are many. Television watching is also a ‘family time’ which coincides with dinner. Indians who choose to binge watch, prefer their list of English serials over Hindi owing to the easy availability of the content and convenient downloads. 
 
However, this is bound to change because entertainment companies have been making big plans to attract the attention of the Indian youth who can be potential consumers of their products. 
 
However, the only hitch would be to compress those 1,000-odd episodes of the highly successful serials into watchable videos. Binge in India will be a different ball game altogether. 
 
The demand for engaging entertainment in this country is growing with passing day. With increasing numbers of Internet penetration, and better devices that stream video content entering the market, India surely holds a lot of promise for people who would like to bury themselves like an ostrich into their favourite television show or a film on the Internet. 
 
Binge watching can be pretty rewarding and gratifying. 
 
Go, catch your ‘Friends’ or ‘Two and a Half men’ or ‘The Big Bang Theory’ alongside ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ or ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasma’. There is a raging demand among children and elders alike for the new shows that are based on mythological stories such as Mahabharat, Devon Ke Dev Mahadev, or Udaan and of course, Chakravartin Ashok Samrat. Chhota Bheem is the darling of children who get to catch their favourite show on the Internet through summer holidays. Ah, the perks of having given up television and entertainment to study for exams! 
 
But, god save you if you want to watch ‘Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ or the likes that ran for years after years. Because while binge watching is a desirable past time, it also means that your broadband bills will also give you a jolt when they arrive. 
 
Piracy will always remain an issue with serial makers who would feel they have lost a premium with the audience choosing another platform to watch their creation. Though in the immediate time frame this looks like an issue that would be addressed in the near future, this is sure to brighten the battle between the mega segments of television viewing. When clarity emerges, content will be the king, and the viewer will decide who has the best of it for him!

Binge watching is gratifying! Or is it?

It was those days when weekends had a different sound to them, according to our elders. Friday nights were dedicated (yes, the RIGHT word) to catching up a 20-25 minutes episode of Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi with Shafi Inamdar, Swaroop Sampat, Rakesh Bedi, Tiku Talsania, Farida Jalal et al. Written by Sharad Joshi, and directed by a host of directors including Kundan Shah, Ye Jo Hai Zindagi held everyone, literally, spellbound. 
 It was a grand run that the show enjoyed for years of clean <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> doled out to television viewers across the nation. It wouldn’t be a mistake to call it a great tool that popularised Hindi, because even in those southern states where Hindi wasn’t the spoken medium there was a huge fan base for Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi! 
 
In the days that followed, there Dekh Bhai Dekh provided some succor, but the industry couldn’t have produced a much massive hit show till many more years. 
 Much water has flown under the river in the recent years and Indian television industry has come to realise the value of combining <keyword id="6359193" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Comedy">comedy</keyword> with every genre of its entertainment segment. 
 Till about a decade ago, the word ‘stand-up <keyword id="10156" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Comedian">comedian</keyword>’ was somewhat a jarring one, given the fact that India didn’t really have the culture of a person who would come on the stage only to crack people up. But, now the trend has picked up, and stand-up comedians are regularly hired even for corporate events where people see the need to let their hair down and laugh. Really, there is no other leveler like a joke and a sense of humour. 
 
Post liberalisation, the bouquet of television channels kept adding a new bloom almost every fortnight. With this, the dearth of variety of programmes forced the channel heads to look at the tried and tested methods that worked with the television audience. Comedy was surely a great crowd puller. Though this was a double-edged sword when applied to films, a comedy show on television was a cakewalk. Hence, the laughter season started! 
 
Early on, it was the news, or Bollywood gossip, or dance shows and games conducted by various actors that packaged humour into it. Then came The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, The Great Indian Comedy Show, and cutting across the Hindi channels it was Office Office, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai and Tarak Mehta ka Oolta Chasma to name a few. 
 
In the recent times, comedy shows climbed so high on TRPs that channels waged wars against each other to curate shows that competed with each other on the same genre! 
 
The old adage of ‘laugh and the world laughs with you’ is finding a different interpretation in the television industry today. 
 
According to statistics, there are a record 151 million people watching comedy shows on Hindi entertainment channels and these shows are the biggest revenue generators in the current situation. Biggest advertisers such as L’Oreal, Procter &amp; Gamble, Nokia, Samsung, M&amp;M and Vodafone are literally vying with each other for adspots on none of the other shows, but on those which have comedy as the main ingredient. 
According to a survey done recently by a media agency, comedy shows came only second to action thrillers that packaged some live dare-devilry. When they were tired of getting scared, and biting their nails, people preferred to laugh and let their hair down. 
 
Today, every brand and every channel wants to associate itself with comedy for viewer loyalty. Endemol India, the television production house which first packaged standup comedy for Indian channels, is constantly experimenting and reinventing new age comedy shows wrapping them together with games or sitcoms. 
 
Bar the double-entendre, comedy shows are those times when the whole family can get together to sit and have a hearty laugh over a meal. Only, the jokes need to be perceived and presented in a manner that a family does not feel embarrassed to laugh together in those moments. 
 
Comedy Nights with Kapil is another show which has climbed very high altitudes in Indian television; now that even the celebrities and cricketers who were not too comfortable being made the butt of jokes, come to be laughed at, and laughed with! This is a sole testimony that the country is tired at drama. Give them some fun!
