A picture tweeted from the official account of Eros International gives us a glimpse into <keyword id="854855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tanu-Weds-Manu-Season-2">Tanu Weds Manu Season 2</keyword>, which as the name suggests is the sequel of 2011 romcom film <keyword id="71996" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tanu-Weds-Manu">Tanu Weds Manu</keyword>. 
 The movie stars <keyword id="2201" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kangana-Ranaut">Kangana Ranaut</keyword>, who has tasted both critical and commercial success with her movie <keyword id="6377522" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="queen">Queen</keyword>, which was released in March this year. The movie, other than being a critical success, set the box office (BO) ablaze, and did a business of almost Rs 100 crore. It also established Kangana much ahead in the race of the best actress in <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>. 
 Actor <keyword id="4759" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Madhavan">Madhavan</keyword> would be seen reprising his role of Manu in the sequel. Between the first and second movie of the Tanu Weds Manu series, he has acted in one Hindi movie, Jodi Breakers, which failed to make an impact on the BO. His other movie Taak Jhaank, which was completed in 2006 and premiered at the 19th Kolkata Film Festival in 2013, is yet to be released in theaters because of the sudden and unfortunate death of director Rituparno Ghosh. However, Madhavan still has got a certain charm, which when mixed with the right story can pull audience to theaters. 
 
Director Aanand L. Rai, who directed <keyword id="963049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raanjhana">Raanjhana</keyword> in between the two movies, has also managed to impressed audience and critics alike in the meantime. Raanjhana earned Rs 120 crore at the BO and was also praised for its gripped direction albeit a confused storyline. 
 
Now talking of money, Tanu Weds Manu was produced at a medium budget of Rs 11.25 crore and Rs 6.25 crore were spent on the publicity, making the total estimated cost to be Rs 17.5 crore. The movie went on to do a business of worth Rs 56 crore, while being one of the biggest critical hits of 2011. 
 
It would be interesting to watch whether the actors and the director would be able to cast the same magic that they did with the first movie, or will the movie fail to make an impact on the BO, just like many other sequels made in Bollywood.

Who can forget the enormous collection that <keyword id="2411684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bajrangi-Bhaijaan">Bajrangi Bhaijaan</keyword> did, or how Baahubali, for that matter, awed both Indian and international audience.

In a recent interview with RJ Malishka, Kangana Ranaut demystified the meaning of a phrase frequently used by our stars. 
 
According to Kangana, the term’ just good friends’ in reality transcends to a fuck buddy being promoted a little bit. 
 
While social media has been going gaga over Ranaut’s honesty, considering Bollywood is starved of actors speaking their heart out, who don’t prefer hiding behind the veil of diplomacy; this is indeed a big win. 
 However, this is not the first time the <keyword id="6377522" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="queen">Queen</keyword> has spoken her mind. Business Insider lists down five instances when Kangana Ranaut has proved that she’s all about the honesty-

2. Sexism is a part and parcel of life if you’re a woman living in country. And, Kangana Ranaut’s following quote proves that you cannot escape that even if you are a National Award winning actress! 
 
“Forget the credit, they (male actors) take all the money as well. We don’t get paid even one-third of what male actors get. It’s not so much about the money, but it’s about ( being a) woman” 
 
3. In an interview with Rajeev Masand, where she was accompanied by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-Deepika-Padukone-Video-Vogue-Or-Vague/articleshow/46744351.cms">Deepika Padukone</a>, Kangana Ranaut redefined what being frank actually meant. 
Masand asked both the actors if they had signed a movie just for money. While Padukone was quick to retort with ‘No, never’, Kangana, on the other hand spoke the truth- ‘Yes I have’ she said. 
With that answer, she also taught us that we should be proud of your mistakes. We forgive you for Krrish 3 Kangana, We do. 
 
4. Unlike most others in the industry, which includes King Khan himself, Kangana made headlines when she turned down a Rs 2 crore fairness cream, advertisement opportunity. When asked what led to her decision, this was her response- 
 
“Ever since I was a kid, I have never understood the concept of fairness. Especially, in such a case, as a celebrity, what kind of an example would I be setting for younger people? I have no regrets about turning this offer down. As a public figure, I have responsibilities," 
 
You had her heart, but with this you have our respect, Kangana. 
 
5. “I am the struggler of the century” 
 
She’s spent over eight years in the industry and has carved out a name for herself without piggy backing on connections and yet she considers herself as a struggler and not a star. If this is not brutal honesty, I don’t know what is.

Five times Kangana Ranaut proved that she is the queen of sass

<keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> actor <keyword id="2201" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kangana-Ranaut">Kangana Ranaut</keyword> is in vogue these days; all thanks to her brilliant performance in the latest <keyword id="2600630" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanu-Weds-Manu-Returns">Tanu Weds Manu Returns</keyword>. As viewers are making a beeline at the ticket counters to get the coveted ticket to watch the movie, its Box Office Collections have already surpassed Rs 100 crore (till the time of filing this report). 
 
The film has turned Ranaut into a superstar, but mind you, this stardom has not come overnight; she has a decade long career behind her with nearly 30 films and several awards including the National Film Award. 
 
Ranaut seems to have somewhat altered her strategy. She is choosing scripts where female protagonists lead such as Queen, <keyword id="1132893" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Revolver-Rani">Revolver Rani</keyword> and Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Her brand equity has gone up as audiences see her capable of delivering a good solo performance and are ready to bet their weekend theatre budget on her. 
 
This is what exactly a brand needs from a celebrity endorser; capable of creating conversations and be a talk of the town. And Ranaut seems to have all this and more. 
 
Known for her psychotic roles (Fashion, Gangster, Raaz, Who Lamhe, Metro), Ranaut has had her share of success and failures. While Queen, <keyword id="3893" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Krrish">Krrish</keyword> 3, Tanu weds Manu, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, Shootout At Wadala got a good response, others like Revolver Rani, I Love NY, Rascals and Double Dhamaal did not do well at the Box Office. 
 
Brands have mostly kept away from her barring a few such as Tanishq (in past), Levi's (in past), Emami (Boroplus), Lawman PG3, Himachal Pradesh Tourism, Myntra, Liva, Askme and others because of her inconsistent career graph. 
 
Well, it's a hard fact that she is no Deepika Padukone or <keyword id="6354850" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Katrina-Kaif">Katrina Kaif</keyword>, who are known and proven Brand Champions. However, after the recent success of Tanu weds Manu Returns, she has got into that league where brands will make a beeline for her? Will they bet large on this Himachal Pradesh girl? Let's see what experts have to say. 
 
Emerging or Non-Emerging 
Geetanjali Bhattacharji, CEO, Marketing Services Audit, Spatial Access, finds Ranaut as a winner but has apprehensions about her brand associations as her personality depicted via films has been that of a non-conformist. 
 
"She has clearly emerged as a winner to shoulder ROI of a film both with Tanu weds Manu returns and her past release being Queen. But it will take an intelligent marketer with spine and a highly creative agency partner to generate propositions with a celebrity like Kangana. Huge opportunities aree there but vey few organizations will put the brand proposition in an interesting context with this celebrity." 
 
However, Shailesh Kapoor, CEO, Ormax Media believes that Tanu Weds Manu Returns is bound to make advertisers and filmmakers look at Ranaut very differently. "Till before Queen, she did not have much notice-ability. Because of Queen, she got noticed for the first time as a serious contender to be a top heroine. But Tanu Weds Manu Returns is going to be a pan-India hit, including the mass centers. This will give Kangana the reach that she did not have earlier," he adds. 
 
Even Darshan M, Director, Spoment Ventures thinks that her value will keep on increasing because she is taking up lead roles, delivering in them and people are liking her. "People are getting opinionated about her and that too in a good sense." 
 
<keyword id="233839" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Shukla">Sanjay Shukla</keyword>, CEO, Percept One begs to differ; he says that she is a great actress, but not a brand endorser. "Previously she was doing very serious roles in movies like Gangster, Woh Lamhe, Raaz 2 and now she is taking up roles where she is like a free soul. She has played a twin personality, even though this is good adds to versatility but I am not how brands will look at it. People are definitely liking her, but she is yet to become a commercial star." 
 
Mass Appeal? 
Undoubtedly, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif are brand champions in India. Both these actors are at the peak of their career, and they both command brands in their kitty and audiences at the theatre. Ranaut, on the other hand, is not yet there, but not that far off either. 
 
Bhattacharji points that brand endorsement is not her space and she clearly doesn't aspire to be there. "She addresses a niche. And intelligent investors (whether brand or producers) will optimize that niche instead of going mass." While Kapoor adds that this will depend on her releases in 2015-17. "Mass popularity takes time to build. Just one or two films cannot do that." 
 
However, Darshan M has a different point of view on this. He believes that Ranaut is natural and convincing, while with the other two there is a plastic and unreal attached to which the audience cannot relate. "Be it from a small or big town, a woman can relate to Ranuat but not Katrina because the latter is the perfect example of the Bollywood actresses who look good on screen but most of it is unreal. She has not become that eye candy or the arm candy, but is looking to lead from the front, which is liked by the people," adds Darshan. 
 
Cross Category Fit? 
It is true that Kangana Ranaut has had a very small list of brand endorsements, but experts believe that brands will be closely monitoring the success of Tanu weds Manu Returns and will be definitely considering her. 
 
While Kapoor believes that brands that want to communicate innovation, talent, women power and inner beauty will go for her, Bhattacharji points at radical fashion brands, unconventional jewellery designers, contraceptives, online players (challenger brands) will find her to be a better fit. 
 
Darshan M believes that Ranaut should not choose regular hair creams, but the ones which are quirky, unexpected, serious and reliable. 
 
Going Forward 
Now Ranaut is no Khan or Bachchan. And hence she will have to keep up to it. Audiences forgive a flop here and there, but they do not like consistency in this domain. Revolver Rani tanked massively at Box Office but Tanu weds Manu did not suffer from it. 
 
"In today's film scenario besides the Khans no actor can risk to be in that situation. She has proven herself time and again as a "Female Hero". The audience expectation will only soar high if not same for her upcoming movies. I think after <keyword id="3844" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vidya-Balan">Vidya Balan</keyword> she is the only actress who has successfully delivered a film purely on her solo performance," Bhattacharji says. 
 
Today Ranaut is all over the social media, brand promotions and Page 3 and we hope to see her more on the screen, be it through her films or the brand ads that she would endorse.

It will offer a range of program formats in languages including Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, and Hindi amongst others. </li><li>We speak to <keyword id="281495" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ali-Hussein">Ali Hussein</keyword>, CEO, Eros Now who walks us through his roadmap for bringing 50 million paid subscribers onto the platform within the next 2 years and his key areas of focus for 2021.</li></ul>Roughly a month after announcing it had added roughly 6.9 million net new paid subscriber additions over the past six months (as of September 30, 2020), Ali Hussein, CEO, Eros Now said that the platform has set its sights on touching 50 million paid users from the current 36.2 million in the next 18-24 months. Last week, the platform also announced its content slate for 2021, with 46 new titles including 33 film premieres and 13 original series. It will offer a range of program formats in languages including Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, and Hindi amongst others. Additionally, Eros Now will debut 30 new Quickies and 10 new short films. To understand the platform’s growth strategy and its larger plans for the upcoming year, we caught up with Hussein who gave us a sneak peek into all the Eros Now is up to. Thought behind Eros Now’s 2021 content slate Eros Now which is the over-the-top platform of motion picture production and distribution company Eros International already has a rich repository of films under its banner thereby giving Eros Now a strong content library. With the lockdown, more and more people opened up to experimenting with different digital content platforms and Eros Now, which also on-boarded around 6.9 million paid subscribers during the lockdown months now want to ensure their users get something extra on their platform. “Our strategy is actually quite simple, we will roughly look at one movie premiere every week and we will also look at 1-2 big budget originals. India is a diverse country and its difficult to predict what people like to watch. Hence, we will offer a combination of content like originals that will drive the younger audiences who have the propensity to pay a subscription price, leading to more episodic behavior. We will also have movie premieres of theatrical scale that will create a deeper penetration both among regional and mass audiences.” The platform has also launched a campaign - #KahaaniHarRangKi, based on insights derived from Eros Now’s proprietary user data, and is customized to satisfy the demand of Eros Now’s target audience in the Indian and global diaspora. The promo features <keyword id="6354535" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ayushmann-khurrana">Ayushmann Khurrana</keyword> and Kartik Aaryan and has already created a buzz on social media. Factors that gave a boost to Eros Now The lockdown has led to a behavioural change where consumers no longer mind spending on content that they like. However, there is a lot of clutter in the OTT space with many global players spending big bucks on both content and promotions. So what are the factors that have helped Eros Now woo consumers and bring them to their platform? “When new content was not being launched on television, people started sampling content on different platforms. People realized that Eros Now had a rich collection of movies including Badlapur, Tanu Weds Manu, Bajirao Mastani etc and then suddenly people started watching movies sequentially. So films is one of the core areas where we differentiate ourselves because the rest of the ecosystem is a combination of maybe Hollywood and some Indian originals. But the largest slate of films is only available on Eros Now. So a lot of people broke the inertia and went through the learning curve of understanding how to use the platforms. Secondly, we kept launching a lot of packaging. We resurfaced some of the older catalog with interesting mash-ups. It was more about remarketing to our customers in terms of the depth of the catalog and that enabled discovery. We also did a few shows which were completely shot during the lockdown and those did well too,” explained Hussein. Eros Now had also removed the paywall in the initial days of the lockdown which also helped introduce a lot of new users to the platform, he added. Apart from providing varied content, Eros Now has also been strengthening its technology side to ensure that consumers get the best experience, which is also ensuring long-term stickiness. Eros Now’s expansion plans The platform has been steadily building its global presence and is already available in the US, UK and Canada through Apple TV Channels. It is also available in China and the Middle East and Southeast Asia. “We've been spending a lot of time and resource in aggregating international audiences and that will continue to be a significant trend for us as a brand,” he shared. He also added that owning to the popularity of Indian content in markets like the Middle East or Southeast Asia, the next step is looking at how we get more local. “Our aim would not be to take our learnings and data sciences to maybe develop more crossover or hybrid programming for these markets and become more local. That will be a big theme for us in 2021, getting into 2022,” he said. On what his overarching focus is going to be for the upcoming year, to take Eros Now to the next level, Hussein said, “One clear area of focus for us is going to be technology, because that's a clear differentiator of how we operate and distinguish ourselves in the ecosystem. Secondly, we will keep focusing on our content. Along with the announcement of our content slate for 2021, we will also have a few more announcements for the first half of 2021, when we will talk about our studio slate. Also, due to our merger with <keyword id="10417540" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="stx-filmworks">STX Filmworks</keyword>, we will be bringing a fairly interesting strategy on English programming on Eros Now, which is a first for us. So content and experiences for customers in India will be a big part of 2021. And our final focus area will be international expansion.” While not revealing the whole story, he also shared that the platform might soon expand to Africa.

Eros Now is aiming for 50 million paid subscribers in the next 18-24 months, CEO Ali Hussein tells us his strategy for making it a reality

 The movie was released on the holy day of Eid, and collected Rs 27.25 crores that day itself. Moreover, in just 4 days of its release, the movie has become the biggest hit of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> this year, leaving behind both Tanu Weds Manu Returns and ABCD 2. The movie entered the much-coveted ‘100 crore club’ in the opening weekend itself, adding another 100 crores to the many that Salman’s movies have been collecting in the past few years.

The movie is based on an inter-border journey that Bajrangi (Salman Khan) undertakes in order to safely deliver a young and mute Pakistani girl Munni (Harshalle Malhotra) to her home in POK. The movie, which co-stars <keyword id="6359106" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nawazuddin-Siddiqui">Nawazuddin Siddiqui</keyword> and <keyword id="1377418" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kareena-Kapoor-Khan">Kareena Kapoor Khan</keyword>, was released in Pakistan as well, being the first movie based on India-Pakistan relations to be released there.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan-the highest grosser of 2015!

After a dry spell of 5 months, 2015 seems to be shaping up to be a great year for <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>. With content-driven movies like Margarita With A Straw and Piku making their mark, Tanu Weds Manu Returns has become the first women-centric movie to rake in 100 crores at the box office. 
 
Things are looking good for the rest of the year as well; given that there are many movies lined up which would be a treat to watch for cinephiles. 
 
<keyword id="248107" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wazir">Wazir</keyword> is one such movie, which is highly awaited by Indian audiences. The first teaser of the movie was launched at the time of Pk release and it is now when the second teaser of the movie has been released. 
 It has <keyword id="5015" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Farhan-Akhtar">Farhan Akhtar</keyword> in the leading role; he plays Daanish Ali, an ATS officer in the upcoming movie, and shared the first look of his character on his Twitter account.

In the teaser, we see gunshots, chases and deaths, with glimpses of Aditi Rao Hydari, Neil Nitin Mukesh and John Abraham, the roles of whom were kept under wraps until now. The movie looks like an intriguing tale of love and religion, with patriotism and loyalty, with the mind game chess being an important part of the movie.

Wazir: A Tale Of Love And Religion

June is at the fag end and we almost have a mid-year report card of Bollywood. Though the year started on a dismal note, it picked up towards May and June. 
 
This year, January was like a drought month and even movies starring big names did not interest the audience. As Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha starrer-'Tevar'- failed to take off, even the Horrex (horror + sex) formula did not work out for ‘Alone’ and ‘Khamoshiyan’. 
 
Other movies that released in January and failed to make a mark included Sonam Kapoor-starrer ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene', ‘Crazy Cukkad Family’, ‘Hawaizaada’ among others. 
 
The only respite that the Bollywood lovers got was from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’, which also became the first movie of 2015 to enter the Rs 100 crore club. 
 
But the jinx did not end in January as February continued to bring more bad news for the industry. 
 
The big shocker came in the form of ‘Shamitabh’. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush, was directed by R Balki, the maker who has given us movies like Pa and Cheeni Kum. 
 
Later in the month, ‘Roy’ released, which recorded a good start but by weekend the movie fizzled out. Most trade pundits pegged the crucial India-Pakistan match at the World Cup as the reason for the drop of sales on Sunday but the movie could not recover much post this phase also because of negative word of mouth. 
 
Thankfully, later in the same month we had movies like ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. Both managed to gather decent collections at the Box Office. In fact, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ was a complete surprise package and managed to pull crowds even in its third week . 
 
March threw a mixed bag as Anushka Sharma starrer 'NH-10' received critical acclaim. April again was a dry month as Bollywood had nothing to offer that could have clicked with the Bolly buffs. 
 
However, Bollywood saw a turnaround in May. It started on a high note with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Gabbar is Back’, which went to collect Rs 86.55 crore at the Box Office. This was followed by Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan’s 'Piku', which struck a right chord with the audience and collected Rs 111 crore worldwide. 
 
Later in the month, Kangana Ranaut wowed the audience with her spectacular acting in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. As per reports, the movie managed to collect Rs 190.87 crore worldwide. Given that the movie was made with Rs 31 crore budget, it stood out and is the most profitable movie of 2015 till date. 
 
But, the disappointment came from ‘Bombay Velvet’. Everybody had high hopes from Ranbir Kapoor’s flick but it fell flat. 
 
The momentum seems to continue with ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘ABCD 2’. ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ has managed Rs 37.05 crore in the first weekend and is holding the fort well. Also ABCD 2, sequel of ABCD, managed to get the biggest opening for 2015 and continues to do a good business over the week. 
 
The later half will see a slew of big- starrer movies such as Salman Khan starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Vikas Bahl of Queen fame’s ‘Shaandaar’, ‘Singh is Bling’ featuring Akshay Kumar, Nikhil Advani’s ‘Katti Batti’, Aishwarya Rai’s comeback movie ‘Jazbaa’ and also ‘Dilwale’ in which fans will see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol paired together. In addition, there will also be a third installment of ‘Hate Story’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ to look forward to. 
 
Commenting on the movie sentiment of 2015, Komal Nahata, Trade Analyst shared, “It has been a good 2015 so far. Sure there were some upsets in the start of the year but May has been extremely kind and the rest of the year looks really promising." 
 
We hope that the forthcoming movies get the cash ringer buzzing for Bollywood and we continue to see some entertaining movies in the latter half of the year.

Mid-year assessment: It was a roller coaster ride for Bollywood

They say there is no business like the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Mid-year-assessment-It-was-a-roller-coaster-ride-for-Bollywood/articleshow/47830513.cms">movie business</a> and indeed every Friday we have at least one new movie tossed at the audience. And by Sunday, we get to know whether the movie will be a hit, a miss or just an average fare. 
	 
	So far, 2015 has been quite an interesting year from Bollywood’s perspective. Why I say so is because on one hand we had magnanimous opus like Baahubali achieving great success and on the other, there were small budget movies such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Relive-the-90s-with-Dum-Laga-Ke-Haisha/articleshow/46395043.cms">Dum Laga Ke Haisha</a>, NH10 and Badlapur, that managed to swoon the audiences and the critics. 
	 
	Sequels like Tanu Weds Manu Returns managed to outshine their last offering and then we had Piku that conveyed human emotions in a brilliant way and also got the cash register ringing.

	So should we conclude that the era for clichéd, formula-based movies, is coming to an end? 
	 
	Not really as in 2015, we had movies like Hero, Tevar, Roy, etc that banked on the predictable story line to woo the audience and managed to garner mixed acceptance. 
	 
	But, if we see a larger picture, new concepts with small budgets and strong script are doing well. 
	 
	The success of Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and last year’s Queen hinted that directors and storytellers should venture with newer concepts to engage and entertain the audience. 
	 
	To this trend, Komal Nahata, trade analyst, said, “I would not like to say that there is a trend shift that is happening. From the past three-four years we have seen some small budget movies doing pretty well. The market for such films is also growing. Earlier they used to do well only in certain multiplexes, then it grew to few cities but now in pockets pan-India, they do well.” 
	 
	While it is true that there are quite a few experimental movies that are being screened, but multiple sources in the industry, on conditions of anonymity, told us that about 60-75% of the movies that go on the floor never see light of the day. 
	 
	 
	 
	A lot of these movies are actually finished products but fail to make it to cinema halls as the distributors are unwilling to buy them or the producer has lost confidence in the movie and does not want to spend more money in promoting them. 
	 
	Despite of the fact that some movies do well in global markets, they are not released in India. The movies that have found place in this list include Peddlers, The Coffin Maker, Dekh Indian Circus, etc. 
	 
	Mind you, not all of these shelved movies have lesser known faces as their star cast. The Coffin Maker stars Naseeruddin Shah while Nawazuddin Siddiqui features in Dekh India Circus. 
	 
	Siddiqui said, “It is rather unfortunate that a lot of content-oriented movies in India are still struggling to get funding in the country and there are a few completed projects that are not able to secure a release. Not just Dekh India Circus, there are a few more of my movies that are currently not released and I have started taking more commercial projects since last year with the hope that if I become a little more known face, it will be easier for my directors and producers to get the pending projects released.” 
	 
	And off-beat movies that managed to secure a release, had to face a tough time in the process. 
	 
	For instance, Shonali Bose’s “Margarita With a Straw”, which has Kalki Koechlin as the leading lady, garnered accolades at Toronto International Film Festival and Koechlin also bagged the best actress award at The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2014. After much delays, the movie finally released to Indian audience on April 17, 2015.

	Unfortunately, not all the movies are lucky as this one. There are quite a few of these Bollywoods' lost children that fail to get a screen space in the midst of high-brow glitterati. 
	 
	I managed to see the world premiere of one such movie in the very heart of London’s film world. Being a movie enthusiast, I had heard a lot about London’s prestigious Raindance Film Festival and it was quite a coincidence that I managed to see a Bollywood movie listed as an `official selection’. 
	 
	Curiosity got the better of me and I reached just in the nick of the time to see ‘Peter Gaya Kaam Se’ (PGKS) (aka The Goa Run). The super plush Vue Cinema in Piccadilly Circus was almost full and the first theatrical screening for this lost Bollywood baby was a complete entertainment package. 
	 
	John Owens' action packed adventure tells the story of a motorcycle taxi driver from Goa (Rajeev Khandelwal) who falls in love with Mira, a beautiful and beguiling drug smuggler from London (Lekha Washington). This out and out commercial flick was originally produced by UTV Spotboys but got shelved and largely forgotten during Disneys' protracted takeover of the company. 
	 
	Director John Owen, who has worked in India for many years as one of MTV and Channel [V]’s head honchos, had penned and directed this story. The movie was shot extensively in Goa and took about a month to complete. It turns out that, the Raindance founder Elliot Grove took a personal interest in the film. 
	 
	 
	 
	Says Owen, "Raindance loved the film and were determined to host the world premiere, especially as I am the first Brit to direct a Bollywood film. A fact that makes me very proud. So when Disney finally gave permission I flew over to Mumbai, finished the sound work we had pending at my cost, did the subtitles myself and had a high end digital print made. The quality of the screening was just superb.” 
	 
	Raindance is in its 22nd year and has become one of the world’s premiere film festivals and very highly thought of by the industry itself. 
	 
	Owen adds, "We didn’t have any money to promote the screening so it was all word of mouth and the buzz of social media. People came from all over the country, it was amazing." 
	 
	Ironically, on the very same weekend Disney's Khoobsurat was premiering in the UK and I could see a theatre just across the street in London's Leicester Square showing it. 
	 
	When I put this point across to Owen, he chuckled and said, "It's funny because Shashanka Ghosh and I have been friends since our MTV days. I stayed with him when I was over in Mumbai fixing up the film in September and we joked about him being Disney's loved and me being their unloved child.” 
	 
	Given the response this movie managed to get sans any promotion and that too in London, I was curious to know what plans Owen or Disney have for this movie. Owen shared that some high-flying industry folks were amongst the excited audience and they saw real potential for the film in the UK and the US. 
	 
	No wonder, UK distributors are showing interest in the movie. Even in India PGKS is well-liked amongst industry insiders who were given personal screenings by the director. After all, the film does come with some pedigree. Anurag and Abhinav Kashyap were `creative producers' and UTV’s top producer on the job at the time was the visionary Vikas Bahl (who has given movies such as Chiller Party and Queen). So, what happens now to Peter Gaya Kaam Se? 
	 
	Owen picks on a philosophical note and shares, "It's all about love and timing. PGKS came along at the wrong time in the marriage of UTV and Disney. So, it’s the unwanted child. A bit like how Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire was for Warner Brothers. Warners’ just didn’t like the film so they let Danny go off and find a new home with Fox Searchlight. Fox loved the film, supported Danny, and made Slumdog a massive box office success. The film industry does not work like a science. Sometimes it comes down to personal taste. When I get depressed about the whole thing I think of Danny and Slumdog and get inspired all over again.” 
	 
	While Owen never had the resources or connections to find buyers for PGKS, on its own, he is looking to crowd funding and other ways to get this movie to be released.

	It is noteworthy, that UTV Spotboys was the pioneer of small budget, content-oriented movies in India. 
	 
	Khosla Ka Ghosla was one of the first movies in this genre that was produced under UTV Motion Pictures. Later between 2008 and 2009, under the UTV Spotboys banner, they released movies such as Dev D, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Welcome to Sajjanpur, A Wednesday, Mumbai Meri Jaan and Aamir. All these movies managed to get a fair share of success at the ticket window. 
	 
	 
	 
	Another coincidence worth pointing out in the case of Peter Gaya Kaam Se is that it went on floor almost at the same time as Paan Singh Tomar. 
	 
	The latter, too, was produced by UTV Spotboys and managed to get a release on March 2, 2012, almost four years after it was complete and it managed to be a box office success largely due to word of mouth. 
	 
	The bigger coincidence is that Paan Singh Tomar, too, was premiered at the 2010 British Film Institute London, almost two years before its domestic release. 
	 
	We spoke to Rucha Pathak on why it was such a challenge to make a movie like Paan Singh Tomar. 
	 
	Pathak was the associate producer of Paan Singh Tomar and Sr. Creative Director at UTV (now Disney India) when this film was being made and is now Head of Creative &amp; Development at Fox Star Studios. 
	 
	“The main challenges we faced while trying to make Paan Singh Tomar was that because it was probably the first time a film like this was being made people did not realise what it was going to be like and it was therefore completely against the trend in those days,” she said. 
	 
	Also we could not help ask her if is it really possible to get any small budget movie out there in the market to which she answered, “It is difficult to release small and medium budget films these days but not impossible. I think if one can find the right marketing budget and the right target audience that you want to reach out to, then it’s possible to release a film. It is really critical these days to make films at the right budget and market films at the right budget. Once that is under control then I believe one can get a film out to reach an audience that it is meant for.” 
	 
	While Pathak emphasised on the budgeting bit, Nahata feels, “Exhibition or the release strategy is very detrimental to the business of content driven movies. The moment there is a big movie coming in, they are thrown out. Most such movies need time for the word of mouth to pick up.”

The distributors today are looking for instant gratification. They would expect the movie to have 80 to 90% occupancy rates for its release Friday itself. If the movie does not show results by Sunday, then on Monday it is thrown out. This was not really the case earlier. I still remember when Maine Pyaar Kiya released, it had just one cinema hall in Mumbai, later when the word of mouth spread, the movie was given more space and it was a such a huge hit,” shares Ami Shah, co-founder and creative director of IntelliAssist (a company that has handled social media mandates for Bollywood movies). 
 
Indeed, distribution is one big challenge for small budget, content-oriented movies in India. However, Director Onir mentions that it is not the only one. Just to give you a perspective, Onir is an Indian film maker, who has churned out movies such as 'I AM, My Brother Nikhil’ and Bas Ek Pal. He had crowd funded his movie I AM, which released in 2010 and also bagged the national award for the same. 
 
Ask him if given a chance would he again crowd fund a movie or give any other director struggling for funds the same suggestion and he replies, “No it is one thing to make a movie and altogether another to get it to the cinema. Marketing a movie, especially a content-oriented one is a hard job.” 
 
I would agree with his point that it is tough nut to market a movie that does not have bankable stars. Like, Filmistaan, the 2014 movie was an endearing tale of wannabe actor, who gets kidnapped by terrorists and held in the home of a Pakistani who deals in pirated Hindi films. The tale captures how both of them bond over movies. 
 
The trailers of the movie looked very bland and I was not sure whether I would want to waste time watching this movie. Fortunately for me, one of my friend dragged me to this movie and I would admit that it was actually one of the best movies of 2014 that I managed to see and yes it did manage to win a national award as well. 
 
The cost of marketing in itself is quite high as well and it is not just important to buy ad space but also to connect right with your target audience. This is perhaps one lesson that the movie Queen managed to do well and of course the word of mouth helped it consolidate its position over a period of time. 
 
Onir also mentions that the government will have to play a greater role to help protect content-driven cinema in India. “The approach that our government takes is that they treat Bollywood as a business and not art. However, it will have to realize that like any art even movies need a bit of support”. In his opinion, there could be plenty of other avenues where movies can be showcased. 
 
Now talking about television, we have 24-hour movie channels that end up playing same movie almost every weekend. Most TV channels pick up movies that have done well on the box office, so that they don’t have to do much in terms of marketing and yet they can have good TRPs on their so-called “World Television Premiere”. It is a possibility that some of these movies that are left biting the dust, some might be ideal for the TV watching audience but so far these gems are not able to get any real support for this medium too. 
 
With the coming of 4G, it is expected that some of these movies might get a fresh lease of hope. There are producers and directors that are looking for alternative channels to monetize their movies via online ads and pay per view models. Currently none of them has been able to come out with a full proof plan and hence some great marvels of Hindi cinema continue to rot in their graves, while the others in the hands of resilient makers are fighting it hard to get to their audiences.
