Witness the birth of a movement. 
 In January 2013, <keyword id="3174895" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abhijit-Pawar">Abhijit Pawar</keyword>’s <keyword id="2951570" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sakal-media-group">Sakal Media Group</keyword> deployed reporters across the western Indian state of Maharashtra to unleash the transformative power of women. Backing woman-to-woman networks with the power of the media, the Tanishka Women’s Dignity Forum (Tanishka Stree Prathishtha Abhiyan) empowers women to be agents of change and improvement in their villages and society. Pawar joined the YPO Pune chapter in India in 2004. 
 
This effort began with 1,500 members of female-only forums, the Tanishka Women’s Dignity Forum movement has grown to 45,000 active members and 50,000 volunteers. These numbers are increasing every day, growing beyond the 95,000 women committed to improving their communities through shared effort and self-empowerment. 
 At the heart of the <keyword id="3174898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanishka-movement">Tanishka movement</keyword> is the forum, a group of 20 women who come together in an open format to discuss issues affecting their lives and those of women in their communities and to find and implement solutions to those problems. Representing all 35 districts and 290 talukas (subdivisions) of Maharashtra, the forums tackle issues from healthcare to land ownership rights to personal safety, sanitation, access to clean water, barriers to employment and much more. 
 
SMG and its Sakal Social Foundation run on the philosophy that media is a medium of social change. Pawar’s father, having served on the Sakal board for nearly three decades, instilled in his son the importance of giving back. As managing director of Sakal, Pawar has taken this idea to heart. 
 
“A seed, nurtured by my father, has turned into a tree bearing fruits, which are being shared with society,” explains Pawar. “We believe that Sakal belongs to society; and while running it, one should not think of only profit and loss but how much we give back.” 
 
Today SMG is recognized as the 11th largest donor company in India and the largest donor company in the Indian media sector. They give back a minimum of 30 percent of their profits to the community. 
 
Pawar has personally developed and launched numerous non-political social change initiatives during his time at SMG, focusing on education, empowerment and socio-economic transformation, including the Tanishka Women’s Dignity Forum. 
 
He brings innovation, business acumen and passion to everything he does. Recognized as an impactful social leader, he has been asked by all major Indian political parties to campaign in the general elections as their candidate, but has declined to do so. It is the opportunity to affect social transformation outside of politics and beyond personal success that he takes as his calling. 
 
“My remaining life will be dedicated to society, preferably outside the public political realm,” says Pawar. “I receive great peace of mind due to the various social activities undertaken through SMG.”

She has just graduated from the University of Tokyo, the most prestigious in the country. 
Wry and poised, with an American mother and Japanese father, she has the languages and cosmopolitan attitude that Japanese companies particularly value nowadays. 
In April she will join McKinsey, a consultancy that should give her immediate membership of a globe-trotting elite.
Yet Ms Kawabata sees obstacles in her path. She is acutely aware of the difficulties she would face at traditional Japanese companies, should she find herself joining one. Ferociously long working hours, often stretching past midnight, are followed by sessions of "nominication", a play on the Japanese word for drinking, nomu, and the English word "communication"; these are where young hopefuls forge connections and build reputations. Nowadays women trying to impress the boss are allowed to drink plum wine mixed with plenty of soda instead of beer, says Ms Kawabata.
But that is hardly a great improvement.
Above all, she worries that having a family will be nigh on impossible to combine with a demanding career. When she met her boyfriend's father for the first time this year, she reassured him about her intentions at McKinsey. "I told him that I would rethink my career in a few years' time," she says.
That one of the brightest of Japan's graduates needs to say such things should worry Shinzo Abe, the prime minister. Japan educates its women to a higher level than nearly anywhere else in the world: its girls come near the top in education league-tables compiled by the OECD. But when they leave university their potential is often squandered, as far as the economy is concerned.
Female participation in the labour force is 63%, far lower than in other rich countries. When women have their first child, 70% of them stop working for a decade or more, compared with just 30% in America. Quite a lot of those 70% are gone for good.
<h2>Beyond the Festival of the Dolls</h2>
Mr Abe says he wants to change that. In April 2013 he announced that allowing women to "shine" in the economy was the most important part of his "Abenomics" growth strategy. Raising female labour participation to the level of men's could add 8m people to Japan's shrinking workforce, potentially increasing GDP by as much as 15%, according to Goldman Sachs, an investment bank.
More women working for more pay would also increase demand. Hence speeches from Mr Abe attaching new-found importance to matters such as the opening hours of kindergartens and the challenges of breast-feeding outside the home.
For the prime minister, who belongs to the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), this is quite a turnaround. In 2005, when a previous government was taking steps towards greater equality, Mr Abe and his fellow conservatives warned of the damage to family values and to Japanese culture that could result if men and women were treated equally.
They worried that rituals such as the hina matsuri, or Festival of Dolls, an annual celebration of young girls and the state of matrimony, could be endangered. Their concern was not just based on tradition; keeping women out of the workforce, conservatives thought, made economic sense too. If the country's "baby-making machines", as a former LDP health minister put it, stayed at home then they would produce more babies, and thus more workers.
This insight proved to be flawed. As the LDP encouraged women to stay at home, the fertility rate, already low, plunged further, bottoming out at 1.26 children per woman in 2005 before edging up to 1.41 in 2012. The consequent dearth of young people means that Japan's working-age population is expected to fall by 40% by 2050, exerting a powerful drag on the economy.
As a solution to this, the direct measure of getting more women out into the workforce would have great advantages over the indirect tactic of encouraging them to stay at home in the unfounded hope that they will breed instead.
Indeed, it may even turn out that working and having children go hand in hand. In other rich countries, higher birth rates nearly always accompany higher female employment, and in Japan itself the birth rate is higher in the countryside, where more women work, than in the big cities, where fewer do. The changes that might encourage more urban women into work--such as better child-care provision, and a less demanding corporate culture, which would mean shorter working hours for men and women alike--might encourage them and their husbands to have more children, too.
<h2>The missing salarywoman</h2>
Mr Abe's interest in all this is new; the problem is not. Yoko Kamikawa, an LDP politician, recently served on the party's new committee seeking to improve the lot of women. In the 2000s, during Mr Abe's first term as prime minister, she was his minister of gender equality. She is startled, she says, by the lack of progress since then.
In most countries women's participation in the labour force dips around the years when they marry and bear children; after that it recovers. But this M-shaped curve is much more pronounced in Japan than in most other rich countries (see chart 1). Japan's curve has levelled out somewhat in recent years: in 2004 the rate of full- and part-time employment for 30- to 34-year-old women was 61%, a figure which by 2012 had risen to 69%.
Yet young, married mothers are still largely absent from the workforce, and many women returning to work go into part-time or temporary jobs with low pay and little security.
<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">The Economist</div></div>Those who stay in work often do so in jobs that waste their abilities. Few women hold professional, technical or managerial roles. In 2012 they made up 77% of Japan's part-time and temporary workforce.
Many of these workers are well-off married women seeking a little extra income. But others are poor and marginalised.
The precarious existence of such workers was described in "Out", a bestselling 1997 crime novel by Natsuo Kirino which had a resonance, and earned acclaim, beyond the borders of the genre.
The heroine, who spends her nights toiling in a soulless packed-lunch factory, helps conceal the murder of a colleague's no-good husband. Ms Kirino's subsequent bestsellers have also focused on the division of gender roles, describing men slaving away in the corporate world, disconnected from women in the home.
At the very top of corporate Japan, the "bamboo ceiling"--so-called by women for being thick, hard and not even transparent--is starting to let in some chinks of light, but they are few and far between. In 2011, 4.5% of company division heads were female, up from 1.2% in 1989. But relative to other countries the numbers are still dismal. Of the most senior, executive-committee-level managers in Japan, 1% were women in 2011, according to a regional study by McKinsey. The equivalent figure for China was 9%, for Singapore 15%.
Corporate culture is by far the biggest obstacle for Japanese women. The practice of hiring graduates fresh out of university and employing them for their entire working lives makes it difficult for employees to take career breaks and seek new positions elsewhere afterwards.
Promotion tends to be based on tenure and overtime, rather than on productivity and performance. And straightforward discrimination remains rampant. In a study that compared the reasons why Japanese and American college graduates leave their jobs, American women cited child care and looking after elderly relations as the main factors. Japanese women blamed dissatisfaction with their jobs and a feeling of being put into "dead-end" roles.
The fact that their husbands, who spend more time at work than their counterparts in other developed countries, spend less time on child care or household chores, adds to the perceived need to stay at home (see chart 2).
<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">The Economist</div></div>When Japanese firms take their pick of university graduates they choose men and women, but they still prefer men for management, sticking most of the women on the "clerical" track.
Foreign companies have been able to take advantage of this prejudice by hiring and promoting able female graduates, says Georges Desvaux, the head of McKinsey's Tokyo office, who also leads the firm's global research on the role of women in companies.
Overseas executives inside large Japanese companies tell tales of über-secretaries with the talent to run the whole business.
Keidanren, Japan's most powerful business lobby, has been markedly uninterested in doing much about this.
Though government pressure recently got the lobby to start internal discussions on promoting women, corporate leaders regard Mr Abe's new enthusiasm for improving the lot of women in the same way as they look on reforms to corporate governance: as costly distractions from the task of lifting Japan Inc's profits.
Keidanren refuses to ask its members even to state the number of women on their boards, in fear of being asked to increase it, or having quotas imposed. Bureaucrats seeking to find the number scan documents for the suffix "ko", usually found on female names.
Male dominance extends beyond the corporate world: in politics, too, women are grossly under-represented. In the lower house of the Diet, women hold only 8% of seats, with 19% in the upper house. In a global survey of women in parliaments, Japan ranked 123rd out of 189 countries. The older generation of men is particularly traditionalist, and still wields the most clout.
<h2>Pampered wife, wise choice</h2>
Yet women are not simply being held back by the patriarchy. When the choice is between leisurely dependency in the home--known as sanshoku hirune tsuki ("three meals and a nap")--and the sorry life of a salaryman there is something to be said for putting your feet up. In wealthy places like Tokyo many women simply do not wish to work, says Takeshi Niinami, chief executive of Lawson, a chain of convenience stores.
Mariko Bando, author of "The Dignity of a Woman", a bestselling guide for women on how to succeed in the workplace, points out that many Japanese women do not feel they need a high-status job to enjoy high status. A well-educated woman working part-time in a supermarket will not see that job as defining her identity if she is the wife of, say, a high-ranking Mitsubishi Corporation executive.
Remarkably, women seem to have become more conservative about work in the past few years. In 1979, 70% of women agreed with the statement that "The husband should be the breadwinner and the wife should take care of the home". By 2004 that had fallen to 41%. But in 2012, perhaps because of the recession in 2007-09, just over half said they preferred to stay at home. A survey last year showed that a third of very young women want to become full-time housewives. Potential husbands, meanwhile, were less traditionalist: only one in five young men said he wanted his future wife to stay in the home.
Feminism has remained a timid force in Japan. The long economic boom that began in the 1950s was a national priority which left little room for questioning traditional roles in the home or workplace, says Chizuko Ueno, Japan's best-known feminist. And women are not without power behind the scenes. Housewives control the family finances, and in the workplace so-called "office ladies" wield a lot of influence over the lives of salarymen, quietly hindering the careers of those they dislike.
There are, however, some indications that the role of women could change. For one thing, the boom that overrode all other interests is long gone. Stagnating wages mean the three-meals-and-a-nap way of life is less widely available, with households increasingly in need of two incomes. And the divorce rate is rising. More Japanese women are opting out of marriages to overworked and largely absent salarymen, and so thus increasingly need to fend for themselves. Although a portion of young women want old-fashioned gender roles, the rest, including the "parasite singles" who prefer living with their parents to marriage, want change.
<h2>Herbivore men, carnivore women</h2>
Some of the most motivated graduates nowadays are female, and a growing number of companies are waking up to the possibility of putting them to better use than in the past. According to Sakie Fukushima, a director of another business lobby, Keizai Doyukai, human-resources executives say in private that they would hire young women ahead of men most of the time. Yet they are afraid that they will lose them when they have children. Japan's female 20-somethings now tend to be far more internationally minded than their male equivalents, says Lawson's Mr Niinami. They outperform soshoku danshi, or "herbivore" men, so-called for taking low-responsibility jobs and preferring shopping to sex. These same young men have little desire to follow the breadwinner/housewife model adopted by their parents. Indeed, Japanese media have recently, with some surprise, begun to note a trend towards young fathers taking on more child care.
In some corners of corporate Japan, firms are changing the old working practices. At DeNA, an internet-services company, employees have noticed that their colleagues in California never stay late at the office, instead continuing their work at home. They are now starting to follow the American example, says the company's founder, Tomoko Namba. A few firms are trying to increase productivity while shortening hours. Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, a leading blue-chip, is discouraging workers from staying in the office after seven o'clock.
By 2020 Mr Abe wants women to occupy 30% of all "leadership" positions--which would include members of parliament, heads of local government and corporate executives. His most practical step has been to try to shorten waiting lists for child care by allowing more private companies into a previously state-dominated sector. Here he has seized upon the work of Fumiko Hayashi, the mayor of Yokohama, who after being elected in 2009 managed to reduce the city's child-care waiting list, then the longest in the country, to zero in just over three years. A former senior saleswoman at Honda, BMW and Nissan, she brought private firms into the sector. Mr Abe wants to expand her "Yokohama method" across the country.
Yet many Japanese women, who are particularly protective of their children, distrust day care (one reason women in the countryside have more children is that they are more likely to have parents nearby to lend a hand). What is required, more people now argue, is an army of foreign nannies. In January, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Abe suggested Japan's immigration rules could be eased so that foreign workers could help care for children and elderly relatives, another duty that falls most heavily on women. There have been unconfirmed media reports that the government is considering allowing in as many as 200,000 foreigners a year to work in areas such as construction, child care and nursing.
As with much of the country's ambitious programme of structural reform, however, such a loosening will face high political hurdles. Immigration is unpopular with the Japanese public; insiders note that Mr Abe may say such things in Switzerland, but has not given public voice to them in Japan.
Until overseas talk is followed by domestic action, many will think Mr Abe lacks the will to push for changes that would greatly improve the life of working women. His actions so far have not impressed. A request that firms allow mothers to take three years of maternity leave--compared with the 18 months they can take now--met with derision from all sides. Companies said it would cripple them; feminist critics said that it was part of the old agenda to keep women in the home. The target of 30% women in leadership roles by 2020 was first proposed in 2003 by then-prime minister Junichiro Koizumi. "The target is an old one, and it was not implemented," says Yuriko Koike, head of public relations for the LDP and a former defence minister. The deadline arrives in only six years; there is little chance it will be met. The idea of reducing waiting lists for child care, too, dates back to Mr Koizumi's time in office.
Some of Mr Abe's allies frequently remind voters of the prime minister's former traditional views on the family. In January Michiko Hasegawa, whom Mr Abe had approved as a board member at NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, published a column saying that women's most important task was to bring up their children, and that this should take priority over working outside the home. "The message on women is somewhat mixed," concludes Ms Koike.
If the government really wants to increase female employment, argues Kathy Matsui of Goldman Sachs, it could do so by axing tax rules that keep women's earnings low. The "head of household", normally a man, is allowed to claim a tax deduction of ¥380,000 ($3,700) as long as his spouse's income does not exceed ¥1.03m. The pension system, too, encourages limited earnings. As long as a wife's annual wages remain under ¥1.3m she can claim the national pension without paying any premiums. Tackling such privileges, however, could cost the LDP the votes of millions of housewives and their husbands.
At a private dinner in Davos Mr Abe listened to a small group of senior women, including a former head of state, discuss what Japan should do differently. An awkward moment came when one of the guests, Miki Tsusaka, a partner at the Boston Consulting Group, told him she had dreaded returning to Japan after a successful career spent mostly in New York. Yet increasingly, behind their soft tones and feminine demeanour, many Japanese women are getting ready to break out of their dolls' house. If the country's policymakers can find the right ways to help them, those women could boost the economy and reform corporate culture. Both they and their sararimen stand greatly to benefit.

Japanese Women And Work: Holding Back Half The Nation

Radhika's maternal grandmother and parents - Viren and Shaila Merchant - also took part in the 'anna seva'. Food will be served to about 51,000 local residents, which will continue for the next few days. The Ambani family has organized 'anna seva' to seek the blessings of the local community for the pre-wedding celebrations of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant. After the meal, the attendees enjoyed traditional folk music. Famous Gujarati singer Kirtidan Gadhvi stole the show with his singing. Sharing food is an old tradition in the Ambani family. The Ambani family has been serving food on auspicious family occasions. When the country was grappling with coronavirus pandemic, Reliance Foundation, under the leadership of Anant Ambani's mother Nita Ambani, ran a large food distribution programme. Taking forward the family tradition, Anant Ambani has started his pre-wedding functions with anna seva. The pre-wedding functions are expected to be traditional and grand. Guests will get to experience the beauty of Indian culture at the pre-wedding festivities. The guests at the occasion will receive traditional scarves made by women artisans from Kachchh and Lalpur in Gujarat. Qatar Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Queen of Bhutan Jetsun Pema, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, and Saudi Aramco Chairperson Yasir Al Rumayyan are among those invited for the celebrations scheduled between March 1-3. Ushering in the much-awaited wedding, the Ambani family has also facilitated the construction of new temples within a sprawling temple complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Featuring intricately carved pillars, sculptures of Gods and Goddesses, fresco-style paintings, and architecture inspired by generations of artistic heritage, the temple complex keeps India's rich cultural and spiritual identity at the heart of the wedding festivities. Brought to life by master sculptors, the temple art employs age-old techniques and traditions. The initiative highlights the incredible skills of local artisans, reflecting Nita Ambani's vision of preserving and promoting Indian heritage, tradition and culture. Anant and Radhika got engaged in a traditional ceremony in January 2023 at the family's residence Antilia in Mumbai. Isha Ambani, Akash Ambani and Anant Ambani, the three children of Mukesh-Nita Ambani, have been closely involved with and are leading and managing key businesses of RIL over the last few years including retail, digital services and energy and materials businesses. They also serve on the boards of the key subsidiaries of Reliance Industries. While Isha M Ambani has been driving the expansion of Reliance Retail, Akash M. Ambani is serving as the Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) since June 2022 and Anant M Ambani is driving the expansion of energy and materials businesses of Reliance Industries. Releasing the India supplement of its annual inequality report on the first day of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting here, rights group Oxfam International said that taxing India's ten-richest at 5 per cent can fetch entire money to bring children back to school. "A one-off tax on unrealized gains from 2017-2021 on just one billionaire, <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword>, could have raised Rs 1.79 lakh crore, enough to employ more than five million Indian primary school teachers for a year," it added. The report titled 'Survival of the Richest' further said that if India's billionaires are taxed once at 2 per cent on their entire wealth, it would support the requirement of Rs 40,423 crore for the nutrition of malnourished in the country for the next three years. "A one-time tax of 5 per cent on the 10 richest billionaires in the country (Rs 1.37 lakh crore) is more than 1.5 times the funds estimated by the Health and Family Welfare Ministry (Rs 86,200 crore) and the Ministry of Ayush (Rs 3,050 crore) for the year 2022-23," it added. On gender inequality, the report said that female workers earned only 63 paise for every 1 rupee a male worker earned. For Scheduled Castes and rural workers, the difference is even starker -- the former earned 55 per cent of what the advantaged social groups earned, and the latter earned only half of the urban earnings between 2018 and 2019. "Taxing the top 100 Indian billionaires at 2.5 per cent, or taxing the top 10 Indian billionaires at 5 per cent would nearly cover the entire amount required to bring the children back into school," it added. Oxfam said the report is a mix of qualitative and quantitative information to explore the impact of inequality in India. Secondary sources like Forbes and Credit Suisse have been used to look at the wealth inequality and billionaire wealth in the country, while government sources like NSS, Union budget documents, parliamentary questions, etc have been used to corroborate arguments made through out the report. Since the pandemic begun to Nov 2022, billionaires in India have seen their wealth surge by 121 per cent or Rs 3,608 crore per day in real terms, Oxfam said. On the other hand, approximately 64 per cent of the total Rs 14.83 lakh crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST) came from bottom 50 per cent of the population in 2021-22, with only 3 per cent of GST coming from the top 10 per cent. Oxfam said the total number of billionaires in India increased from 102 in 2020 to 166 in 2022. The combined wealth of India's 100 richest has touched USD 660 billion (Rs 54.12 lakh crore) -- an amount that could fund the entire Union Budget for more than 18 months, it added. Oxfam India CEO Amitabh Behar said, "The country's marginalised - Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, Women and informal sector workers are continuing to suffer in a system which ensures the survival of the richest. "The poor are paying disproportionately higher taxes, spending more on essentials items and services when compared to the rich. The time has come to tax the rich and ensure they pay their fair share." Behar urged the Union finance minister to implement progressive tax measures such as wealth tax and inheritance tax, which he said have been historically proven to be effective in tackling inequality. Citing a nationwide survey by Fight Inequality Alliance India (FIA India) in 2021, Oxfam said it found that more than 80 per cent of people in India support tax on the rich and corporations who earned record profits during the Covid-19 pandemic. "More than 90 per cent participants demanded budget measures to combat inequality such as universal social security, right to health and expansion of budget to prevent gender-based violence," it added. "It's time we demolish the convenient myth that tax cuts for the richest result in their wealth somehow 'trickling down' to everyone else. Taxing the super-rich is the strategic precondition to reducing inequality and resuscitating democracy. "We need to do this for innovation. For stronger public services and for happier and healthier societies," said Gabriela Bucher, Executive Director of Oxfam International. Oxfam India urged the Union finance minister to introduce one-off solidarity wealth taxes and windfall taxes to end crisis profiteering. It also demanded a permanent increase in taxes on the richest 1 per cent and especially raise taxes on capital gains, which are subject to lower tax rates than other forms of income. Oxfam also called for inheritance, property, and land taxes, as well as net wealth taxes, while enhancing the budgetary allocation of the health sector to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2025, as envisaged in the National Health Policy. Oxfam said it also wants public health systems to be strengthened and budgetary allocation for education to be enhanced to the global benchmark of 6 per cent of GDP. "Ensure workers in formal and informal sector are paid basic minimum wages. The minimum wages should be at par with living wages which is essential for living a life with dignity," it added. "If I'm disrespected in the broader community, I should be able to go home to my community and feel the opposite and that is absolutely not the case." <h2>Some critics say this is not a story of cancel culture </h2>For some, the incident has caused them to reevaluate whether they still identify as J. Balvin fans. "I'm very upset that he would depict Black women in a way I find very appalling," Anajia Owens, a musician, told Insider. "The representation that he chose to go with is inexcusable, especially when all the information is right there at your fingertips." "I can't stand by him or support him," Owens, who is a Black woman, said. She added that both her and her girlfriend, who is Afro-Dominican, feel as though the incident created a "huge loss" for both Black and Black Latino communities. However, she and others stress that this is not a story about cancel culture. To her, and so many others, this is a story about accountability and treating Black women with the respect and dignity they deserve. They say the industry fosters this dynamic. Eccleston cited Jennifer Lopez as an example of the music industry "browning white Latinos." Lopez came under fire last year for referring to herself as "negrita" in a song even though she's not Black.There's a sense that the music industry tends to view white Latinos as more authentically Latino than Black Latino musicians, said Perea. Perea compared Balvin's mainstream success to that of ChocQuibTown, a Black Colombian hip-hop group. Though the group has been nominated for and awarded several Latin Grammys, it has arguably not seen a similar level of success as Balvin, who has had collaborations with Beyoncé and Bad Bunny. "Afro-Colombian artists have to confront injustice and racism in different ways that J. Ro Khanna of California</a> is a third-term progressive Democrat in the House who has made a name for himself as a strident opponent of the US government's interminable support for the "forever wars" - the numerous military actions that have gone on for years without congressional approval. Khanna spoke with Insider columnist <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/anthony-l-fisher">Anthony Fisher</a> by phone on Friday, less than 48 hours after the deadly insurrection by Trump supporters on the Capitol during the Electoral College certification proceedings.The following interview has been edited for style, length, and clarity. What were you doing when the doors of the Capitol were busted in? I was in the Cannon office building. We were evacuating Cannon because there was a lead pipe bomb threat. I was actually headed towards the Capitol and then I got a frantic text saying head back, the Capitol is being overrun. We went back to the Cannon building and there were conflicting reports. We got one report saying "bomb threat cleared," then another report saying it was not cleared. But finally we just decided that it was probably cleared and better to be in our office. So I went to my Cannon office and locked the door and stayed there. I stayed in my office till about eleven o'clock and then and then went to the floor for the proceedings and the votes until about three in the morning. Can you describe the feeling on the floor of the House that late at night after such an unprecedented day? I think it was one of determination that we were going to stay until we certified the results, one of anger about what happened, one of shock. As you walk to the floor of the chamber, you see the damage. The elevator I usually take was cordoned off as a crime scene because that was a place where a woman had died. [I was] going into a majestic building which had been badly damaged. What do you think about your Republican colleagues who even after the insurrection insisted on trying to stop the certification? It's bewildering. It's baffling. A total lack of respect for the democratic process. There have been calls to expel <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-danforth-josh-hawley-presidential-election-challenge-electoral-college-2021-1">Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri</a>, what do you think about that? I think there has to be an ethics investigation. Hawley was actually out there <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-riots-trump-cruz-hawley-republican-leaders-violence-maga-congress-2021-1">fist pumping with the crowd</a>, and so there could be actual incitement to violence. And I think there should be an investigation for any sitting member of Congress or senator who actually incited violence, who went and supported a crowd that was engaged in violence. Do you consider Hawley's behavior an incitement to violence? On its face? It looks like it from the pictures I've seen of his activity next to the protesters. But that's where I think there should be a formal ethics investigation into his role in inciting violence. Do you think that the president directly incited violence? I think it was a case of incitement. Again, I think there has to be an investigation into what laws may have been broken. Do you support impeaching the president again? I do. I think we need to do it right away. Why's that?Well, first you have a President of the United States who incited violence, then supported the people who were engaged in storming the Capitol - literally supported them on Twitter - and then refused to do his duty, which is to safeguard American democracy. He refused to call the national guard. I don't see how you do those things in you. How can you do those things and still be President of the United States. He should have been out the day after. So I am not just for impeachment, I'm for impeaching him now. What do you think the chances are of more unrest? I'm fearful of it. I think a lot depends on what the Republican leadership does. If Pence is president, I think there's less of a chance of riots and violence. And hopefully this time you aren't going to have Republican lawmakers invoking conspiracy theories and inciting violence. To pivot a bit, you took a lot of heat from <a href="https://twitter.com/ndrew_lawrence/status/1334317356043149315">people on the left</a> for going on Laura Ingraham's Fox <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">News</keyword> show and discussing your support for ending the <a href="https://khanna.house.gov/media/in-the-news/transpartisan-revolt-against-america-s-endless-wars">forever wars</a>. Some thought you were "validating" Ingraham just by appearing on her show. Why do you think it's valuable to go on shows like that? I believe in the First Amendment, and I believe that you have to reach as many audiences as possible, and you have to engage in wide debate. Laura Ingraham has millions of followers. She's going to have millions of followers whether I go on her show or not. So the idea that I'm "validating" it doesn't measure up with the facts. It's one thing if I went on some show that had a small audience and was giving them a credibility boost, but Ingraham's show doesn't need that. I don't think <keyword id="1467230" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="progressives">progressives</keyword> should be afraid to go into forums and articulate our ideas and build a growing coalition. Otherwise, how are we ever going to get our policies through? Now, if someone is on those programs, I think that they have an obligation to speak out for their values and you shouldn't be going on a show and, and agreeing with the host if they're saying things that are offensive or saying things that are contrary to what you believe. President-elect Joe Biden's got a history of being a hawkish Democrat, and his administration is shaping up to be a lot of familiar faces, probably not people that are terribly divergent from his foreign policy views. What are you hoping for from the Biden administration when it comes to national security and foreign policy?I'm hoping we end the war in Yemen and I've been encouraged by preliminary conversations with people in Biden's team. I think they understand the moral urgency of the situation. I believe [Biden's nominee for secretary of state] Tony Blinken is going to make it a priority to stop our support for the Saudis and stop the bombing in Yemen. That has to be a priority. I'm working with Sen. Bernie Sanders on a war powers resolution to make sure that Congress has to be consulted before we get into any other wars.What do you think Biden should do about the remaining US troops in Afghanistan?He should pull them out. There needs to be a peace negotiation, and then we ought to leave. That's what's in the interest of humanitarian considerations, that women and children are dying there every day as we speak. And that's in the United States' interest. We're still spending $50 billion a year there. That would pay for almost-free college for every American. That would alternately pay for high-speed internet for every American. The costs have been staggering and the cost to human life is staggering. So we need to leave. We should make it clear that if there's ever emerging threats or terrorist threats to our homeland from [Afghanistan], we reserve the right to conduct and we reserve the right to go in again. But, there's no point in having a permanent presence there. For the past five years, Republicans have been terrified of offending Trump and in some cases abandoned their long-held principles for free market economics to appease Trump and his base.After the Capitol insurrection, will Republicans still express that kind of fealty to Trump because they're afraid he'll support a primary challenge?It's the first time I've seen a break. Not just by lawmakers, but also by [Trump's] Republican friends.I think the images of the Capitol being stormed, it really shifted people's mindsets. There's something about the sacredness of the Capitol, about a belief in stability for American democracy. Conservatives are the last ones who want to see some revolution in this country. And I think those images scared people of what we've become. So I used to think that Trump would run again and now I think that seems very unlikely. I think events of January 6th were a game changer.Trump has stoked conspiracy theories and those conspiracy theories were obviously a huge factor in the minds of the people who got violent at the Capitol. A repeated mantra from this hardcore Trump supporters is that - even though Trump's lawyers were laughed out of court - there was enough voter fraud that the election was effectively stolen and that they now no longer trust democracy. Moving forward, what do you think about the state of American democracy in the sense that a great many millions of people have lost faith in it because of blatant lies? It's a big challenge for us. I think on the one hand you've had parts of democracy working, you had Republican state legislatures vote for certification. You had Republican secretaries of state stand up to this president. You had a Republican appointed judges rule against the president. You had a Republican senate majority leader and a Republican vice president stand up to the president. But how do you overcome the spread of conspiracy theories and alternative reality, is one of the challenges for our time. Obviously we need to rethink the role that social media has had in encouraging diversion realities and how we try to structure and design social media so that there are common sources of information. We have to look at education across the country in terms of giving people the ability to sort out facts from conspiracy theory. And then we have to look at the communities that have been left out and why and why some of the anger may be there and the anxiousness may be there with the changes the country is going through, and how to respect the dignity of these places that have been left behind. And if we can do that, you're not going to get to everyone, but maybe you'll get to some, and that builds a coalition of people going forward.I think there's two challenges for the country. The challenge of economically-left behind places and people where you don't have economic wealth generation, without basic healthcare, without basic housing. And then you have the deeper question, and that is the cultural challenge. I mean, one of the reasons that this country has produced Obama, Trump, and AOC within a few election cycles is because we're searching with great difficulty in how we've become a multi-racial multi-ethnic democracy. And when you look at the immigration post-'65 from non-European countries - I mean we're the most diverse we've ever been in our nation's history - it's easy to conceive of a nation on philosophical principles if there is also a cultural similarity. To conceive of a nation on philosophical principles, of a commitment to our constitution, when you have such incredible racial diversity, such incredible religious diversity and the racial history we do, is a very, very difficult project. And I think a large part of our challenges - how do we begin to improve the communication between Americans who come perhaps from very different perspectives - I think that just the awareness of said difficulty of that project, that having greater respect and humility in how we talk to each other, trying to lower the temperature of accusations, is something that leaders should aspire for. I guess the point is we need a bold economic vision, but we need to couple that with leadership that looks for finding commonalities of Americans with great differences. And it's a difficult project, but there's never been a multiracial, multiethnic democracy in the history of the world. And so what we're trying to do is very hard as well. In the Congress, we need to begin a dialogue with each other in ways that lowers the volume of the screaming on cable news and looks for ways to respect Americans and understand their anxieties, understand their perspectives, and find some common fabric for this country.Are there any Republican colleagues who you're hopeful can help you in that effort to lower the temperature? I have a very good relationship with Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin. We've done things together with Jodey Arrington in Texas. I went to Hal Rogers' district in Kentucky to have conversations.One of the things I think we need in America is sister cities. We have sister cities with countries overseas, but what about the sister cities with Palo Alto, California and Jefferson, Iowa?I think we have to stand firm on our values, but figure out how do we understand and appreciate the misconceptions, the anger, and common ground. I guess it comes down to your fundamental belief of a fundamental decency of the American people. I think there is, of course, we're all a product of her upbringing. Now, my family hasn't faced some of the piercing hate and segregation that certainly African-Americans have faced in this country. So I don't want to minimize the problems around race and the changes in the face of leadership and the reactions that caused. But I think the way to solve that is to have more exchanges between members of Congress going to each other's districts, learning and recognizing, and talking to communities with an openness and not having a moral judgment in doing so. It's a little bit abstract because there's not a concrete three-point program that is going to suddenly find a common culture in America. But, I think ultimately it's the responsibility of leaders.Take Lincoln's famous speech on July 4th, the question was, how could you be a German and be American, or be French and be American, or be a Norwegian and be American - ironic given that Trump said he wanted Norwegians in this country - but back in Lincoln's time, Norwegians weren't considered American because you had to trace your heritage back to the founders to be a true American. And Lincoln said famously in that speech that there's a mistake chord that extends from any American who believes in freedom and liberty. Of course, Lincoln was half-poet, half-political leader, but the question is how do we have that kind of leadership in communities across America that allow us to have difficult conversations and yet search for some common identity? I actually think you could probably split politicians into two buckets.
