BARC says that it has proposed reviewing the current standards of measuring and reporting data and improving their statistical robustness. This will cover all Hindi, regional, English and business news channels. “Starting with the ‘News Genre’, BARC will cease publishing the weekly individual ratings for all news channels during the exercise. This exercise is expected to take around 8-12 weeks including validation and testing under the supervision of BARCs Tech Comm. BARC will continue to release weekly audience estimates for the genre of news by state and language,” BARC said in a release. BARC pauses weekly television ratings of all news channels for three months following TRP controversy

This exercise would cover all Hindi, Regional, English News and Business News channels with immediate effect. Therefore, starting with the ‘News Genre’, BARC will cease publishing the weekly individual ratings for all news channels during the exercise. BARC to stop publishing weekly individual ratings for all news channels

<ul><li><keyword id="198934" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hansa-Research">Hansa Research</keyword> agency claims that Republic TV did not check with it about the veracity of the document used under its name.</li><li>The agency sent a notice to Republic TV before filing the suit. </li></ul>Hansa Research, the agency appointed by Broadcast Advertising Research Council (BARC) for managing household panel for TV audience measurement, filed an FIR on October 6, 2020 with the assistance of BARC Vigilance team against Hansa’s former employee complaining of wrongdoing and tampering of people-meter homes. This FIR is being investigated by the Mumbai Police who has labelled it as the <keyword id="10073602" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="trp-scam">TRP scam</keyword>. The Police, in a Press Conference on 8th October, had alleged that Republic TV was one of the channels involved in this. Soon thereafter from October 10, Republic TV started showing something called the “Hansa Report” on its channel and said that this report does not mention Republic TV anywhere. Republic TV did not check with Hansa Research about the veracity of this document, nor did they seek permission from Hansa for use of any of its document for public broadcasting. Given that Hansa’s name and its purported report were being repeatedly used publicly without permission, Hansa filed a suit in the City Civil Court Mumbai on 16th October seeking an injunction against use of its name by Republic TV. The Court heard the plea and has posted formal hearing on this for November 25, 2020. The Court did not entertain a petition for an ad-interim injunction on use of Hansa name by Republic TV. Commenting on the case, Praveen Nijhara, CEO Hansa Research said, “We formally sent a notice to Republic TV on Monday October 12, 2020 requesting them not to use our name. Since this was not acted upon, and Republic TV continued to use the Hansa name on television, we had no option but to approach the City Civil Court seeking an injunction against use of our name. The matter is now sub-judice and will be heard in November.” The preparation and dissemination of data on TV ratings is managed by the industry body <keyword id="397085" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Broadcast-Audience-Research-Council">Broadcast Audience Research Council</keyword>. Hansa’s role is restricted to the set up and management of a certain number of panel homes on behalf of BARC. Hansa does not receive nor review any viewership information data from the panel homes. All the data on viewership goes directly to BARC who are the custodians of all TV viewership information.

Hansa Research files a suit against Republic TV for using its report without consent

It further said, “It is high time that the channel behaves responsibly and not compromises the safety of its journalists as well as the collective credibility of media. The police must ensure that its investigation does not hurt the channel’s journalists or makes any arrests. The Editors Guild of India releases a statement urging Republic TV to act responsibly and Mumbai Police to not victimize journalists

The <keyword id="30356" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-Regulatory-Authority-of-India">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> on Tuesday recommended changes to the structure and methodology of television ratings monitoring agency, <keyword id="397085" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Broadcast-Audience-Research-Council">Broadcast Audience Research Council</keyword>, after concerns were raised over the neutrality and reliability of the existing system.The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting notified the policy guidelines for television rating agencies in India on January 10, 2014, under which the industry-led body <keyword id="65298" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BARC">BARC</keyword> was accredited to carry out the television ratings in India. BARC commenced its operations in 2015 and since then it is the sole provider of TV rating services on commercial basis. In a statement, TRAI said several concerns relating to neutrality and reliability of the existing rating system have been raised by stakeholders, which necessitated a need to review the existing television audience measurement and rating system in India. After a consultation process involving all stakeholders, TRAI recommended that structural reforms are required in the governance structure of BARC to mitigate the potential risk of conflict of interest, improve credibility, bring transparency, and instill confidence of all stakeholders in the TRP measurement system. The composition of the Board of BARC India should be changed as part of the proposed structural reforms, TRAI said. It recommended that the Board should have at least fifty per cent independent members which should include one member as a measurement technology expert, one statistician of national repute from among the top institutions of the country and two representatives from the government or regulator. Restructured Board of BARC India should provide for equal representation of the three constituent Industry Associations -- Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI), <keyword id="137212" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Broadcasting-Federation">Indian Broadcasting Federation</keyword> (IBF) and The Indian Society of Advertisers (ISA) -- and with equal voting rights irrespective of their proportion of equity holding. TRAI also recommended that the tenure of the members of the BARC India board shall be for two years. Active participation of representatives of the advertisers and the advertising agency will bring more accuracy, transparency, credibility, and neutrality in the system, due to their inherent need of advertisers to reach viewers accurately, TRAI said. The constituent Industry associations shall be entitled to nominate their representatives to the board membership subject to the condition that a cooling period of four years shall be applicable between two consecutive tenures, for any such nominee member, it said. TRAI recommended that the tenure of the Chairman of the Board should not be more than two years and the chairmanship shall be rotated among the constituent industry associations in every two years. Number of members in the technical committee should be increased to five with the addition of two external technical experts, it said. TRAI also recommended the forming of an oversight committee to guide BARC India in the areas of research, design and analysis and constantly improving the rating system. The oversight committee should have representation from the <keyword id="390714" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Council-of-Applied-Economic-Research">National Council of Applied Economic Research</keyword>, IIM, IIT, media research expert and demography expert, nominee from the <keyword id="832830" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Information-Broadcasting">Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting</keyword>, and TRAI, it said. The Committee should also be responsible for nomination or appointment of independent members of the board as well as to give policy direction to BARC India, if it is so required, TRAI said. TRAI also recommended changes in BARC India methodology for a better rating system. To create credible and accurate collection of data, multiple data collection agencies need to be encouraged, TRAI said. Competition and multiple agencies for data collection and processing would bring in new technologies, new research methodologies, new methods in analysis, as well as new and better ways to ensure better data quality, it said. Reports suggest that Aamir Khan’s seasonal show, Satyamev Jayate 3, got better TRPs than Bigg Boss season 8. In fact, the eighth season’s ratings are the lowest compared to all past seasons of this show.
 

	These reports and rankings surely have been bothering the producers, who are trying hard to spice things up.
 

	For instance when the theme of aeroplane didn’t go down well with the audience, the producers shifted the contestants to a lavish house just one week after the premiere and toned down the aeroplane settings.
 

	Even after this, the audience didn’t appreciate the show and the producers had to call some wild card entries in the house to put things on the right track. These wild cards included Ali Quli Mirza, Dimpy Mahajan, Renee Dhyani and Nigaar Z Khan.
 <keyword id="1985489" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bigg-Boss-8">Bigg Boss 8</keyword> is now gearing up for the biggest and probably the costliest change; its makers have now decided to bring in the American reality TV star <keyword id="6357837" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kim-Kardashian">Kim Kardashian</keyword> into the house. 

	Kardashian, who is known to flaunt her personal life in the hit show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, will be entering the house for a short while. 
 

	As we all know, Kardashian recently ‘broke the internet’ as she bared it all for a photoshoot for an international magazine. The fire of that picture has not even fizzled down and she is all set to enter the controversial reality show.
 

	Kim is reportedly charging a whooping amount of Rs 70 lakh per episode. However, when we dug deeper into her Twitter feed, we came across this tweet where she mentioned that she would be touring three countries in one week:

	As she plans to spend one week in three countries, India being one of them, we don’t think that she would be spending more than two nights in the Bigg Boss house. Rest, we will have to wait for her entry in the house to see how things get juiced up, and if producers would decide to carry on with her role.
 

	In the past, we had several other foreign guests in the show. The list includes actors Jade Goody and Pamela Anderson, cricketer Andrew Symonds, and Sumo wrestler Yamamotoyama.

TRP-hungry TV shows, masala news debates, scripted reality shows step aside – it’s time for a cocktail of all three. Yes, IPL is back and the cricketing world is abuzz with festive cheer. So, as we join these celebrations and gear up to cheer for our favourite teams in the following days, let’s have a look at the good, the bad and the ugly of IPL. 
 
THE GOOD 
As the eighty eight warriors from eight teams get set go, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with its amazing win-loss ratio seems to be a hot favourite. CSK’s bright track record evolves from its achievement in making it to the final four in previous seven IPL tournaments. Having won two IPL titles, it has played four finals till date. Of 115 matches played in IPL, CSK has won 69 and lost only 44; thereby, attaining the best win-loss ratio of 1.57. 
 
THE BAD While they were there in first and the last IPL played, Kings XI Punjab, the Ness Wadia co-owned team has failed to qualify for the final four in 5 IPL tournaments. With a Win-Loss Ratio of 1.10, it has found a companion in <keyword id="13802" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Royals">Rajasthan Royals</keyword> in terms of not-up-to-the-mark performance. Rajasthan Royals has won 54 out of 104 matches. However, the only consolation for Rajasthan Royals over its comparison to the bhangra brigade is its victory in the first IPL edition. 
 
THE UGLY Though Delhi Daredevil has made it to the Final Four <keyword id="108404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="thrice">thrice</keyword>, yet its performance had been the poorest. Having lost 59 matches out of 105, it has the lowest win-loss ratio of 0.75. Now with <keyword id="351" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Yuvraj-Singh">Yuvraj Singh</keyword> in their court, Delhi finally aspires to hit a home run, something that IPL followers are also looking forward to this season. 
 
KNOCK(OUT) STAR With power and panache being their sole mantra, <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> Knight Riders have always been the IPL queen bee. Having raised the trophy twice in 7 seasons, KKR is known for its knockout skills. The achievement is based on KKR’s 77% victory in the final-four stage. 
 
<keyword id="161142" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Best-Buy">BEST BUY</keyword> Ever since the IPL was conceptualized, player auction has become the norm. Though auction rates vary from time to time, this year’s IPL auction has found in Yuvraj Singh an extravagance. Having bought by <keyword id="13845" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Delhi-Dare-Devils">Delhi Dare Devils</keyword> for Rs 16 crores, ex Royal Challenger Bangalore, Yuvi has recently made headlines for his venturing to support young entrepreneurs. 
 The 3 best buys in the IPL this season are: Yuvraj Singh (Delhi Dare Devils) for Rs 16 crore, Dinesh Karthik( <keyword id="12643" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Royal-Challengers">Royal Challengers</keyword> Bangalore) for Rs 10.5 crore, and <keyword id="125980" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Angelo-Matthews">Angelo Matthews</keyword> (Delhi Dare Devils) for Rs 7.5 crore. 
 The lowest bargains this year are: Hanuma Vihari of <keyword id="1494441" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sunrisers-Hyderabad">Sunrisers Hyderabad</keyword>, Sumit Narwal of Kolkata Knight Riders, Akshay Wakhare of <keyword id="13880" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mumbai-Indians">Mumbai Indians</keyword>, Shishir Bhavenane of Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Brainder Sran of Rajasthan Royals. All of these players have been sold for Rs 10 lakh in the IPL auction that happened this February. 
 However, it’s definitely surprising that acclaimed players like <keyword id="22772" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kumar-Sangakkara">Kumar Sangakkara</keyword>, <keyword id="23015" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mahela-Jayawardene">Mahela Jayawardene</keyword>, <keyword id="70374" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tillakaratne-Dilshan">Tillakaratne Dilshan</keyword> and Shadab Jakati found no takers in the latest season of IPL.

The good, the bad and the ugly of the IPL

Via Dave Lutz at JonesTrading, here's a quick guide to what traders are talking about this morning. 
Good Morning! US Futures are starting mixed, as the Russell jumps 30bp, while S&amp;P and NDX are flat. Overseas markets are enjoying tailwinds, with Abe calling snap election and delaying the tax hike (well expected), and dovish hopes continuing from ECB on the back of Draghi comments. Germany's ZEW bounced back sharply helping DAX jump 1.2% in average volume as Materials, Industrials and Banks perform well in Europe. Over in Asia, Russia's MICEX continues to climb as Oil stabilizes, while the Nikkei surges 2% on hopes of additional stimulus measures from the new Abe government. The HK link remains a "Sell the News" in light volume, with China off 70bp as China new home prices fell in virtually every city surveyed. The Sensex finally took a breather from it's recent run, while Staples and Tech helped propel the KOSPI up 1% as Samsung jumped post-analyst day. Emerging Asia is had a strong overnight, with Malaysia and Thailand rallying behind Indonesia's much anticipated subsidized fuel price hike overnight - while Aussie lost small, weighed down by the Miners.
The US 10YY is flat this AM, with most of the Sovereign attention on PIIGS spreads post-Draghi's speech yesterday. BoE Gov. Mark Carney flagged up "huge disinflationary forces," a remark which was taken as a strong hint that record-low U.K. interest rates aren't going up anytime soon - The DXY is retreating into the Fed's minutes tomorrow - giving commodities a nice tailwind this AM. The Standout winner is Gold - climbing 1.2% to the highest in two weeks (speculation the ECB may purchase assets including bullion to counter low inflation / SNB Vote / Crowded Short). Growth commodities remain under pressure, with Copper off 1% and WTI giving up pre-market gains (was up 1%) into Oil Inventories and Expiry. Scheduled Catalysts today include Total Net TIC Flows At 9, NAHB Housing Market Index and Quarterly Retail E-Commerce Sales at 10 - Fed's Kocherlakota Speaks on Monetary Policy at 1:30, and After the close we get API inventories for Crude. The Spot VIX contract expires today, and at some point we may have the US Senate voting on Keystone tonight.
Some trades I'm watching today - ITB (Builders) held key support again yesterday ($25), but HD is under pressure early on #s ahead of NAHB data / Watch the Gold Miners - someone has been rolling from GDX/GDXJ into the levered NUGT, which has surged 25% the last 2 sessions / With the Russell Outperforming, I'm watching to see if today is a "Good Harbor" day, as they are currently UW Smallcaps / With Oil breaking down into Expiry, imagine more headwinds for HYG as the HY Energy Credits continue to be sold / Keystone headlines may impact TRP, ENB, SU, IMO, CVE, CNQ, CNRL and refiners - but a Obama Veto looms large / Watch the levered Gun&amp;Ammo plays (RGR, SWHC, ATK, DKS, CAB, TASR) with Ferguson headlines heating up into the Jury decision.
