<p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/562642eedd08959e348b46da-4567-3425/group - bar disk .jpeg" alt="Love the Sales team group shot" data-mce-source="Love the Sales" /><p class="source"><span>Love the Sales</span></p><p class="caption">Love the Sales cofounders: Stuart McClure, Mark Solomon, and David Bishop.</p></div><p></p></div></div>A three-man startup that wants to go head-to-head with Amazon this Christmas has managed to persuade the majority of major retailers on London's Oxford Street to list sale items on its website.</p><p><a href="https://www.lovethesales.com/" target="_blank">Love the Sales</a>, launched just 18 months ago, features sale items from over 500 retailers. It sells everything from t-shirts to washing machines, most of which are at reduced prices.</p><p>The London-based company, which takes a commission on any items sold over its platform, has registered over 3,000 people in the last two months.</p><p>When a customer clicks an item on the Love the Sales website they're automatically redirected to a retailer's website where they can complete their purchase. Love the Sales gets a commission on any purchases made at the end of this chain.</p><p>"We aggregate sale items from retailers," Love the Sales cofounder Stuart McClure told Business Insider. "So you walk down Regent Street/Oxford Street, it's all those sorts of companies, all the big brands. We aggregate all of their sales onto our site."</p><p>Brands such as Reiss, Ben Sherman, Calvin Klein, and Topman can all be found on the website.</p><p>McClure, who used to work for men's shirt retailer T.M. Lewin, claims retailers are signing up in droves because they're keen to find alternative ways of pushing stock that's a loss leader or reaching the end of season.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/562135a2dd0895f70a8b46c8-1080-540/screen shot 2015-10-16 at 18.27.42.png" alt="Loves the Sales website" data-mce-source="Love the Sales" /><p class="source"><span>Love the Sales</span></p><p class="caption">The Love the Sales website sales reduced items.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"The basics of what they get through this sort of affiliate marketing is extra sales across sale products and non sale products," he said.</p><p>Only six retailers have turned down the opportunity to have their products featured on the Love the Sales website, according to McClure. One of those is Selfridges, he said, adding that the 106-year-old department store didn't want to be associated with reduced prices.</p><p>The amount of commission that Love the Sales takes varies depending on the product being sold. For fashion items it's anywhere between 5% and 20% but for electrical products like an £800 washing machine it can be as low as 2%.</p><p>"At the moment we're just on the standard commission levels for most of the retailers," said McClure. "We've got to reach a tipping point where we can say to them, 'if you want to be on our site, you've got to give us this.'"</p><p>Love the Sales claims that it is processing two million online products a day with its proprietary technology. TopShop&#xa0;has collaborated with Kate Moss, and recently, the brand launched a collaboration with none other than<span> </span><a href="http://www.topshop.com/en/tsuk/category/clothing-427/kendall-kylie-at-topshop-4451275?geoip=noredirect" target="_blank">Kendall and Kylie Jenner</a>. The collaboration, with prices from $85-$250, is what one might expect from a collaboration involving the provocative Jenner girls.</span></p><p><span><div><iframe src="//instagram.com/p/-TUf3UBSgX/embed/" width="658" height="auto" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer">But the Jenner girls are polarizing. It has been around since the '60s, is extremely popular in the United Kingdom, where, according to its <a href="http://www.topshop.com/en/tsuk/category/about-us-80/home" target="_blank">website</a>, it has 300 stores.&#xa0;And for the coming London Fashion Week,&#xa0;Topshop is sponsoring eight up-and-coming&#xa0;designers as they show off their latest collections, <a href="http://fashionista.com/2015/12/newgen-fall-2016" target="_blank">Fashionista </a>reported.</p><p>But the brand&#xa0;is smaller&#xa0;in the United States, with just a few locations in select cities, despite devoted fans. There are two locations in New York City - one in the trendy Soho neighborhood and one on Fifth Avenue, near Rockefeller Center.</p><p>Its growth might appear to be stunted compared to Zaral's or H&amp;M's, but the brand has been smart about it. After all, Topshop is not Zara - and it's certainly not H&amp;M.</p><p>"Even if they haven't grown as fast as they originally planned over here since they entered the market in 2009, Topshop has learned to use what they were already very good at to grow their US business: timely collaborations with relevant tastemakers, and being perceived as a step up from purely derivative fast fashion,"&#xa0;<span>Gesina Gudehus-Witter, a consultant at Vivaldi Partners Group,</span><span>&#xa0;</span><span>wrote in an email to Business Insider.</span>&#xa0;</p><p>"Even if the majority of their designs are clearly inspired by the high fashion runways, Topshop has managed to establish itself as an influencer brand in their own right to consumers, in sharp contrast to, for example, Zara, which is more clearly seen as directly translating designer collections to the high street<span>. Topshop's brand personality as a cool European influencer brand to fashion-conscious millennials is quite unique in the US market in fact, they are serving it up very well on social media, too, and it is tied to a much clearer style direction than those of Zara or H&amp;M," she added.</span></p><p>These distinctions have been both the brand's blessing and its curse.</p><p>"Topshop's decidedly fashion-forward positioning has also been a part of what has limited their growth here in the US,"&#xa0;Gudehus-Witter explained.&#xa0;"To truly appeal to a broad customer base here, fashion brands need to be more approachable here than in Europe, and Topshop has struggled with this in the past."</p><p><div><iframe src="//instagram.com/p/-jQgXdBSq2/embed/" width="658" height="auto" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">But trying to appeal to too broad of a demographic would likely force the retailer to sacrifice&#xa0;its fashionable gravitas and unique characteristics. This is why its high-profile collaborations are central to the brand's expansion, and why tapping Beyonc<span>cé </span> for a partnership is a sign of potential growth.</p><p>"This is again where they can, and are, using their expertise in collaborations with the right influencers though,"&#xa0;<span>Gudehus-Witter&#xa0;</span>added. "Their recent announcement to collaborate with Beyonc<span>cé </span> on an athleisure collection is the exact right step into the US mass market, tapping into the booming athleisure trend without compromising their key brand values. And their strong social media presence will certainly help this new move. "</p><p>That's not to say the brand hasn't already made strategic moves to help grow in the Untied States, Gudehus-Witter explained. "One could say they have used collaboration in other ways to break into the US market, too: growing their presence at first through concession brands at established US retailer Nordstrom, and recently selling 25% of their business to US private equity firm Leonard Green &amp; Partners have both been strategic moves directly tied to their need to understand this market from an insider's perspective to really conquer it. <p dir="ltr"><span><span><span></span></span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Since then, J. Crew, Topman, Asos, and Barneys have introduced the world to the men's version of this trend. </span></p>
<p dir="ltr">Sylvie di Giusto, a personal branding strategist at <a href="http://executive-image-consulting.com/">Executive Image Consulting</a>, says people are always "looking for things to wear during the summer that are more comfortable in terms of the heat."</p>
<p>But, she says, the short suit trend isn't necessarily the best one to follow.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>"Corporate America is not the place for professional experimen<span style="background-color: #ffffff;">ts," </span><span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">di Giusto explains. </span>"</span>It's still very traditional and just not the place to try out new fashion trends."</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>This applies to both men <em>and</em> women, Di Giusto says. "I always recommend women to avoid distractions at any price. People should look at my face or focus on my skills and talent - not look at my legs." The length of one's bottoms is a sign of respect for the occasion and the audience. Wearing shorter clothing may indicate a lack of professionalism toward coworkers and clients, she says. "The more you deal with other people and their money, the less skin you should show."</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span><span>The biggest problem with the trend, she says, is that it doesn't allow you to "tell a clear story." She says your</span><span> clothes can say a lot about you - "and in the workplace, I want people to tell a consistent story, whether it's that they're trustworthy, reliable, fun, or approachable." The problem with short suits: they blend two stories at once. </span></span></p>
<p dir="ltr">Shorts can also be expensive and not always worth the investment. High quality short suits range from $400 to $900. "I would rather have people invest the money in a good [pants] suit so they can wear it for a long time," she<span> says.</span> "If you invest your money in this trend now, then in two years everyone will see it and think, 'that's so 2014.'"</p>
<p dir="ltr">However, shorts may be more appropriate in some industries than others, says <span>Jacqui Stafford, author of </span>"<a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Wow-Factor-Insider-Secrets/dp/1592407730" target="_blank">The Wow Factor: Insider Style Secrets for Every Body and Every Budget</a>." "If you are in a more creative field, like fashion or media, then your dress code will be more lenient," she says. "However, if you are working in banking and consulting, it's best to be avoided altogether."</p>
<p dir="ltr">If you determine that shorts <em>are</em> perfectly acceptable in your particular workplace, <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Di Giusto recommends that they not be shorter than two fingers above the knees. For women, s</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">he also advises against pairing shorts with other feminine clothing, such as pantyhose, sleeveless shirts, tops with deep necklines, or open-toed shoes.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>For men who feel a strong desire to wear shorts: make sure you establish it as a consistent "stand out piece," or your "signature look," she says. "If what you want to be known for is wearing shorts every day at work, then I would say go for it, because you're telling a consistent story for who you are and what makes you different."</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>Men also need to consider what they pair the shorts with. <span>Stafford </span>says if you pair them with a grey fitted jacket or a nice cardigan, "you'll be able to offset the casualness of the shorts." Di Giusto also recommends pairing shorts with a dress shirt, tie, and oxford shoes. However, in most cases, the only occasion she thinks shorts are appropriate is casual Friday.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span><span>Di Giusto says if </span><span>you decide to indulge in this trend, you also need to have good looking legs. "If you decide to reveal them in an office environment, I would at least make sure those legs are well-groomed, toned, and nice to look at," she concludes. </span></span></p>

Here's Why You Shouldn't Wear Shorts To Work

<p>While the fashion world is already looking ahead to Spring 2015, we're here to prepare you for Fall 2014.</p>
<p>The majority of fall menswear collections that were shown at New York Fashion Week last spring had muted color palettes and resurrected past trends, from puffy jackets to fair isle prints. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jogger-pants-are-taking-over-menswear-2014-8">Sweatpants</a> even made their way onto the runway.</p>
<p>Here are eight trends to watch out for this season.</p>
<h3>Down-Filled, Quilted Jackets</h3>

(Photo by )" data-mce-source="Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Topshop Topman" data-link="http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/161660525" /><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/161660525">Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Topshop Topman</a></span></p><p class="caption">Sir Philip Green, whose Arcadia Group owned BHS until last year.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The inquiry by MPs into the <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bhs-in-administration-11000-jobs-risk-2016-4">collapse of BHS last month</a> began on Monday, focusing the spotlight on Sir Philip Green, the retail billionaire who sold the chain for £1 last year.</p><p>Green and his companies put up another entity as a guarantor for the pension scheme that couldn't meet the required capital to reduce pension insurance payments; they suggested a 23-year recovery plan for the pension scheme, more than double the average; and then sold the company without telling the Pensions Regulator, which learned about the sale in the newspapers.</p><p>The regulator opened an immediate anti-avoidance case that it is still pursuing to try and claw back money from Arcadia and Sir Philip to meet the BHS pension plan shortfall.</p><p>While the regulator wouldn't comment on the specific case, CEO Lesley Titcomb said these cases are generally opened when someone or a company is "considered in some way of walking away from their contributions."</p><p>BHS collapsed last month with a pension plan deficit that the state-backed Pension Protection Fund, known as the Pensions Lifeboat, must now take on. There are an estimated 20,000 members of the pension plan.</p><p>Green bought BHS in 2000 for £200 million and took around £400 million in dividends out of the business. But it has faded dramatically in recent years and last year he sold it to an inexperienced former racing driver for £1 last year.</p><p>MPs heard evidence from Alan Rubenstein, CEO of the Pension Protection Fund, Pensions Regulator CEO Lesley Titcomb, and the regulator's Director of Case Management Nicola Parish.</p><p>Here's a summary of what we learned from the <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/philip-green-will-face-2-parliament-grillings-over-the-collapse-of-bhs-2016-5">joint session of the Work and Pensions Select Committee and the Business Select Committee</a>, which focused on BHS' pension deficit:</p><ul><li>The state-backed Pension Protection Fund (PPF) will have to fund a shortfall in the pension plan of BHS of between £250-300 million;</li><li>The PPF, known as the Pensions Lifeboat, doesn't expect the levy it charges on solvent funds to go up as a result of taking on BHS' liabilities;</li><li>The PPF and regulators had concerns about the BHS pension plan as early as March 2012;</li><li>Around that time, Arcadia, Sir Philip Green's retail company, put up another group company as a "guarantee" for BHS' pension scheme in a bid to reduce the PPF levy that it had to pay - a little like an insurance premium;</li><li>But when the guarantee was checked a year later, PPF CEO Alan Rubenstein says it "seemed incapable of providing a guarantee of £200 million." The guarantee was simply not renewed;</li><li>The company, Davenbush, owns and leases BHS' property back to it. It had assets of £22 million in 2012 and made a loss of £20,000 that year;</li><li>Rubenstein says of the guarantee process: "We felt it was abused. That was not the only case of a company providing a guarantee that couldn't actually fulfill that guarantee";</li><li>BHS suggested a 23-year recovery plan to get its pension plan on track. The usual length is around 8 years. Rubenstein agreed that this was highly unusual. Lesley Titcomb, CEO of the Pensions Regulator, says it was "a-typical";</li><li>Titcomb says: "We learned about the sale from the newspapers... They discussed a number of propositions with us. The next we heard they'd sold the business."</li></ul><p>Overall, both Arcadia and the Pensions Regulator came off badly in the sessions. Green's Arcadia appeared to be pulling every trick in the book to lower its bill on the pensions plan.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57318feedd0895710d8b459f-1020-765/ppf.jpg" alt="PPF" data-mce-source="Parliament.tv" data-mce-caption="Alan Rubenstein, CEO of the Pension Protection Fund" data-link="http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/f97b1e97-fff6-4839-aa4a-ada30f854496" /><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/f97b1e97-fff6-4839-aa4a-ada30f854496">Parliament.tv</a></span></p><p class="caption">Alan Rubenstein, CEO of the Pension Protection Fund</p></div><p></p></div></div>When asked about putting up Davenbush as a guarantee for the Pension plan, PPF's Rubenstein told MPs: "People don't like paying insurance schemes so they do everything they can to reduce them."</p><p>But he added: "Many of the major accountancy firms were involved.... BHS were not particularly a special case." The loophole Arcadia used has sine been closed, Rubenstein says.</p><p>Green has<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/sir-philip-greens-full-letter-to-mps-frank-fields-and-ian-wright-2016-5"> complained of a "trial by media" in the wake of the BHS collapse. </a>But Titcomb underlined the fact that Arcadia and Sir Philip have a serious case to answer when it comes to meeting the shortfall in the pension plan. She told MPs: "I do not disperse levy payers money without due consideration. We've been going for a year and we're still going."</p><p>The regulator has 70,000 documents to pour over in the case but Titcomb says it hopes to have made significant progress by the end of the year.</p><p>At times, the session was frustrating as Titcomb's investigation limited what she could talk about. Asked about Sir Philip and his family taking dividends out of the company, Titcomb said: "We'd rather not go into that. It's germane to our open investigation at the moment. I'd rather not go into that."</p><p>Parish, sitting alongside her, added: "Certainly whether dividends had been paid out is something we'd look at and any plans for future dividends."</p><p>Sir Philip took £400 million of dividend out of BHS in the early years of his control of the department store.</p><p>On the sale of BHS for £1 last year, Titcomb says: "We would have gone and asked them what is the provision for the pension scheme in this situation. In typical of looking at such situation we will take into account the strength of the new owner and the record of the main acquires."</p><p>BHS was sold to a vehicle run by Dominic Chappell, a three-times bankrupt former racing driver with no former retail experience.</p><p>But as well as turning up the heat on Sir Philip Green and Arcadia, the session showed up the shortcomings in the current pensions system. The regulator and PPF knew of serious shortfalls in the BHS plan in 2012 but little progress appears to have been made in the three years before its sale.</p><p>Richard Fuller MP told Titcomb at one point: "You don't sound like much of a regulator." She replied, visibly annoyed: "We have to operate within the framework provided to us."</p><p>Frank Field, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/sir-philip-green-calls-for-frank-field-to-resign-from-bhs-investigation-over-pensions-row-2016-5">the MP chairing the joint session of Select Committees</a>, said more charitably: "The more these two sessions have gone, it seems to one member, me, that you've got an impossible task." He suggested breaking up the roles of making a recovery plan, suggesting whether it's advisable, and conducting an inquiry into abuses.</p><p>The Select Committee hearing will continue its inquiry over the coming months, with Sir Philip Green expected to appear before MPs in June. 'Abused', 'a-typical' and a Pensions Lifeboat: Here's what we learned from the first day of the BHS inquiry
