An FIR has been lodged against actor-turned-BJP leader <keyword id="19913288" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mithun-chakraborty" source="keywords">Mithun Chakraborty</keyword>, following allegations that he delivered a provocative speech during a <keyword id="19894848" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bjp" source="keywords">BJP</keyword> event held in North 24 Parganas district last month. The complaint, filed at Bidhannagar South police station, relates to Chakraborty's remarks at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) in Salt Lake on October 27, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also in attendance, launching the West Bengal leg of the BJP's membership drive. According to a senior officer from Bidhannagar Police, “We have started an investigation into the case.” Chakraborty, who received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award earlier this year, was reportedly unavailable for comment. However, BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar decried the FIR, labeling it "vendetta politics." He asserted, "There is nothing provocative in his speech. These are nothing but attempts to intimidate him by using police as a political tool." During his speech on October 27, Chakraborty declared his party's ambitions in West Bengal, proclaiming, "In 2026, the masnad (throne) will be ours, and we will do everything to achieve the goal." He also urged BJP booth-level workers to resist attempts to intimidate BJP voters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, alluding to past incidents where voters were allegedly discouraged from supporting the saffron party. The development comes ahead of the Delhi High Court hearing the defamation suit filed by Trinamool Congress MP Moitra in alleged cash for Parliament questions against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai on Tuesday. She has been asked by the Ethics Committee to appear before it on November 2. Moitra was first asked by the Ethics Committee to appear before it on October 31. As the final five phases of polls draw closer, rift among <keyword id="20101713" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="INDIA-bloc-partners" source="keywords">INDIA bloc partners</keyword>, <keyword id="21533469" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress-Left-combine" source="keywords">Congress-Left combine</keyword> and the <keyword id="19942089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TMC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="TMC" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="TMC">TMC</keyword>, which are fighting separately has intensified, triggering a fierce contest across half of the remaining 36 constituencies in West Bengal driven by local issues such as <keyword id="20074422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sandeshkhali" source="keywords">Sandeshkhali</keyword> and the SSC scam. TMC's decision to contest independently in the state, rather than as part of the bloc, has led to a three-way contest, with the other contenders being the BJP and the Congress-Left alliance. Nevertheless, both TMC and Congress have asserted that they are part of the INDIA bloc at the national level and are authentic representatives of the opposition front in Bengal. Political analysts suggest that without a dominant national narrative like national security after the 2019 Pulwama attacks, local concerns such as corruption allegations, the cancellation of School Service Commission (SSC) jobs, incidents in Sandeshkhali and implementation of the <keyword id="19965573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Citizenship-Amendment-Act" source="keywords">Citizenship Amendment Act</keyword> (CAA) are altering election dynamics. Maidul Islam, a political scientist at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, remarked, "Till a few months ago, it seemed the elections in Bengal will be a bipolar contest between the TMC and BJP. But with issues like corruption and Sandeshkhali gaining prominence, the Left-Congress alliance is fast gaining traction in several seats and turning the polls into a three-cornered contest in at least 18-20 LS segments." He said besides the two and three seats in Malda and Murshidabad districts, where TMC and Congress secured two each and the BJP one in 2019, there are 13 seats spread across South Bengal, where the TMC and the Left-Congress alliance are engaging in intense competition. "It's not that the Left-Congress will win many seats, but in segments where their vote share is above 10 per cent, there is a likelihood that they might influence the outcome, to the disadvantage of either the TMC or the BJP, if they manage to secure two per cent more votes," Islam added. According to sources in TMC and CPI(M), the electoral battleground extends beyond Malda and Murshidabad, encompassing Lok Sabha segments like Dum Dum, Srerampore, Arambagh, Hooghly, Howrah, Barrackpore, Bardhaman-Purba, Bardhaman-Durgapur, Bankura, Purulia, Tamluk, Kolkata North, and Jadavpur, all poised for a three-cornered fight. Notably, eight of these seats were won by TMC and the remaining by BJP in the 2019 parliamentary polls. "The shift in dynamics presents the Congress-Left alliance as a significant player, and its emergence complicates the electoral narrative, transcending the conventional TMC versus BJP dichotomy," political analyst Subhomoy Moitra said. While the Left Front is contesting 30 seats, the Congress has fielded candidates in 12 out of 42 seats. "We wanted an alliance with the Congress, but they were delaying the seat-sharing arrangements, so we decided to go alone. Now the Left-Congress alliance is helping the BJP by trying to eat into our votes," remarked TMC leader Santanu Sen. According to TMC leaders, the breakup of INDIA alliance in Bengal has both electoral advantages and disadvantages. "After the Left and Congress alliance fell apart in West Bengal in 2019, it had led to a four-cornered contest with BJP bagging the entire chunk of the anti-TMC votes in the state," they said. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP bagged 18 seats and its vote share rose from 17 to 40 per cent. Meanwhile, despite a 3 per cent rise in vote share, the TMC lost 12 seats, dropping from 34 to 22. The Left drew a blank with a vote share decline from 24 per cent to 6 per cent, and the Congress lost two seats, shrinking its vote share from 9.5 per cent to 5 per cent and bagging just two seats. "Local issues such as corruption and SSC scam are helping the Left-Congress in the state as there is anger among a section of people against the TMC and also against the BJP over the perception of a tacit understanding," a TMC leader said. Analysts observe that <keyword id="43868" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mamata-banerjee" source="Orion">Mamata Banerjee</keyword>'s intensified criticism of Left and Congress, accusing them of aiding BJP, and the ensuing sharp responses from CPI(M) and Congress, alleging a secret pact between TMC and BJP, as indicative of the growing significance of Left-Congress alliance. Data from various local elections and by-polls conducted after 2021 assembly elections indicate a shift in anti-TMC votes as there has been a resurgence of Left-Congress combine. Incidentally, the BJP had witnessed a decline in its vote share as compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha and 38 per cent in 2021 assembly polls. In 2023, violence scarred panchayat polls which covered nearly 70 per cent of the state's electorate, the TMC had bagged 51 per cent of votes whereas the BJP had bagged 22 per cent. The Left-Congress-ISF alliance had, however, bagged 23 per cent votes. The ISF this time, however, has decided to contest alone in 17 seats. Congress leader Suvankar Sarkar emphasized, "People are disenchanted with the TMC and the BJP, as they are both sides of the same coin. People are coming out in large numbers to support the Left-Congress candidates." CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty expressed confidence in the Left-Congress alliance's potential to deliver surprising results in the elections, claiming initial success in breaking bipolar politics in Bengal. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar downplayed the significance of the rift in opposition alliance and the three-cornered fight in various seats. "People know that BJP is only fighting TMC's misrule in Bengal. Those who want to vote against TMC, will vote for us only just like in the 2019 and 2021 polls," he said. Political scientist Biswanath Chakraborty suggested that TMC stands to gain the most from the three-cornered contest. In minority pockets, the Left-Congress alliance could dent TMC's vote base, potentially aiding BJP's prospects, he noted.

West Bengal Elections: Rift among INDIA bloc partners triggers three-cornered intense contests

During the debate in the <keyword id="122785" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="upper-house" source="Orion">Upper House</keyword> on the 128th Constitution Amendment Bill that seeks to reserve a third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women, members also highlighted the need to accelerate the process instead of waiting for a fresh census and delimitation exercise. Taking part in the discussion, Elamaram Kareem of CPI(M), while supporting the bill, said the BJP had promised to bring the <keyword id="109340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="womens-reservation-bill" source="Orion">women's reservation bill</keyword> in 2014 and in 2019 as well but did not take any action. He held the ruling party responsible for women's reservation losing nine years. This is an election gimmick by the BJP after losing elections in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, besides facing defeat in the civic polls in Delhi polls, he said. Citing violence against women in strife-torn Manipur and allegations of sexual harassment by women wrestlers, Kareem alleged the government cared little for women. Ram Nath Thakur of the JD(U) questioned the timing of bringing the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam'. Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MP K Keshava Rao stressed the need to accelerate the process for women's reservation and said the 2011 Census could be taken as the benchmark. He urged immediate appointment of the delimitation commission. MDMK's Vaiko also echoed similar sentiments. Saroj Pandey of the BJP said it was unfortunate that questions have been raised on the timing and the intent of bringing the bill. As the country celebrates 'Amrit Kaal', this was the ideal moment for such a legislation, she said. Asom Gana Parishad MP Birendra Prasad Baishya noted that the women's reservation bill has come at a "proper time" after failed attempts in the past. JD(S) leader H D Devegowda also supported the bill and recollected steps taken by him for women's reservation while he was the chief minister of Karnataka and also the prime minister. Manoj Jha of the RJD said demanded that the women's reservation bill be referred to a select committee to consider extending similar benefits to Other Backward Classes. V Vijayasai Reddy (YSRCP) also supported the bill and said the reservation for women must also be extended to Rajya Sabha and state legislative councils. KC Venugopal of the <keyword id="1575" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="congress" source="Orion">Congress</keyword> sought immediate implementation of the legislation. He also sought reservation for the OBC women under the bill. Venugopal claimed the <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> government did not make any effort to bring the bill in the last nine years and it is due to the political calculations that the government has brought the legislation now. The list of leaders leaving TMC for the BJP includes some prominent names like Suvendu Adhikari, Mukul Roy and celebrity-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty. The West Bengal assembly elections are scheduled to be held in eight phases between March 27 to April 29. In total, 34 TMC legislators have left the party to join the BJP – either due to differences with the party, being denied a ticket this time or due to the belief that their future lies with the BJP, not TMC. Surprisingly, out of the 34 legislators who joined its cadre, the saffron party has given tickets to only 13 of them. This is the constituency where the current chief minister Mamata Banerjee will have a face-off with Suvendu Adhikari, her former trusted aide and one of the main faces of the Nandigram movement. It was the Nandigram movement -- protests against the then government’s land acquisition efforts for a special economic zone (SEZ) -- that helped the TMC and Mamata Banerjee end the 34-year rule of the Left Front. Will this assembly election once again prove to be the end of another rule – this time, TMC’s? Time will tell, but it shows the importance of this assembly seat for both the parties. Krishnanagar North – Mukul Roy vs Koushani Mukherjee Mukul Roy, the former right-hand man of Mamata Banerjee, will be contesting from the Krishnanagar North seat. This will be Roy’s first election in 20 years – his last was in 2001 from the Jagatdal assembly constituency where he lost to Haripada Biswas. Roy will be contesting against Koushani Mukherjee, actor-turned-politician who joined the TMC in January, this year. Domjur – Rajib Banerjee vs Kalyanendu Ghosh Rajib Banerjee, former minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet joined the BJP in January this year. He was elected twice from the Domjur constituency – in 2011 and again in 2016. He will be facing off against TMC’s Kalyanendu Ghosh. Bally – Baishali Dalmiya vs Dr. Rana Chatterjee Baishali Dalmiya was expelled from the TMC for speaking out against the party. She is the daughter of late Jagmohan Dalmiya, former cricket administrator and BCCI president. She will be taking on Dr. Rana Chatterjee from TMC. Diamond Harbour – Dipak Halder vs Pannalal Halder Dipak Halder, a two-time TMC legislator quit the party after speaking out for months against it. He said he was “not being allowed to work for the masses” since 2017. He joined BJP in February, this year. Dipak Halder and Pannalal Halder are not related to each other. Singur – Rabindranath Bhattacharya vs Becharam Manna Rabindranath Bhattacharya quit TMC earlier this month and is being fielded by the BJP from the Singur constituency, despite strong opposition by the party’s cadre who have accused him of getting them arrested when he was the TMC legislator. Ranaghat Uttar Paschim – Partha Sarathi Chatterjee vs Sankar Singha The 62-year-old Partha Sarathi Chatterjee was a former TMC legislator from Ranaghat in 2011. He lost the seat in 2016 to Sankar Singha, who fought on a Congress ticket. Interestingly, Singha has joined TMC and will be defending his seat this year. Jagatdal – Arindam Bhattacharya vs Somnath Shyam Arindam Bhattacharya, a lawyer by profession, will be fighting for the Jagatdal seat on a BJP ticket. He currently represents the Santipur constituency, but this year will see him switch to Jagatdal. Natabari – Mihir Goswami vs Rabindra Nath Ghosh Mihir Goswami, who currently represents the Cooch Behar Dakshin constituency, will switch to Natabari and fight on a BJP ticket. He will take on TMC’s Rabindra Nath Ghosh, who is the incumbent Natabari legislator. Monteswar – Saikat Panja vs Siddiqullah Chowdhury Saikat Panja is the incumbent legislator from the Monteswar constituency, which he won with an overwhelming majority in the 2016 by-election. He will be facing off TMC’s Siddiqullah Chowdhury, who is also the West Bengal president of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. Kalna – Biswajit Kundu vs Deboprasad Bag The saffron party is fielding Biswajit Kundu, who joined BJP earlier this year. Ironically, Kundu’s nomination triggered a mass switch of 70 party workers to the TMC, who protested against Kundu’s corruption. Pandabeswar – Jitendra Tiwari vs Narendranath Chakraborty Jitendra Tiwari, a TMC heavyweight, joined the BJP after rebelling against the TMC leadership. His entry was initially opposed by BJP minister and popular singer Babul Supriyo, given that both the politicians had faced off in the Asansol constituency earlier. Durgapur Purba – Diptangshu Chowdhury vs Pradip Mazumdar Diptangshu Chowdhury, another senior TMC leader and former advisor to the chief minister, left TMC to fight on a BJP ticket from the Durgapur Purba constituency. Interestingly, Chowdhury was earlier with the BJP before switching to the TMC in 2017. 34 West Bengal legislators went from TMC to BJP – only 13 of them got tickets to contest the election for the saffron party

In a star-studded Assembly election battle in West Bengal, in which both the ruling <keyword id="43826" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trinamool-Congress">Trinamool Congress</keyword> and the principal opponent <keyword id="14666" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> fielded more than a dozen actors and actresses as candidates, the trends seem to show that while the Trinamool has successfully reaped the advantage of stardom, the <keyword id="204577" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="saffron-party">saffron party</keyword> has failed to capitalise on the glamour quotient. Tollygunge was considered by many as one of the toughest seats for the Trinamool, where the BJP fielded singer-turned-politician MP Babul Supriyo against seasoned campaigner Arup Biswas. However, after 10 rounds of counting, Biswas was way ahead of Supriyo, taking a lead of more than 10,000 votes. With Biswas increasing the lead after every round, it seems that Supriyo is now fighting a losing battle. In fact, all the major characters from the celluloid fielded by the ruling Trinamool Congress are maintaining lead in their respective constituencies. In Barrackpore -- an industrial town in North 24 Parganas district considered to be the fortress of BJP strongman Arjun Singh -- Trinamool candidate and popular director Raj Chakraborty is leading against BJP's Chandramani Shukla by a margin of nearly 4,000 votes. Two other popular actresses -- June Maliah from Midnapore and <keyword id="1076648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sayantika-Banerjee">Sayantika Banerjee</keyword> from Bankura -- have maintained their lead against their respective <keyword id="6414910" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bjp-candidates">BJP candidates</keyword>. Actress Sayani Ghosh, who is contesting from the Asansol South constituency from where Babul Supriyo had won in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, is ahead of BJP candidate and president of BJP Mohila Morcha, Aginmitra Paul, by a narrow margin. Similarly, popular actor and Trinamool nominee Kanchan Mullick is leading in the Uttarpara Assembly constituency in Hooghly district. Not only Babul Supriyo, but the other BJP star candidates have also started showing trends of trailing in different constituencies across the state. Locket Chatterjee -- the sitting MLA from Hooghly who is now contesting from Chuchura -- is trailing by a margin of more than 3,000 votes against Trinamool's Asit Mazumder. Similarly, <keyword id="41885" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rudranil-Ghosh">Rudranil Ghosh</keyword>, who had recently changed camps and joined the BJP, is trailing behind Trinamool veteran and state minister Sovondeb Chatopadhyay. BJP's Payel Sarkar, who is contesting from Behala East, is trailing behind her Trinamool rival Ratna Chatterjee, the estranged wife of former mayor Sovon Chatterjee. Another popular actress <keyword id="1834697" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srabanti-Chatterjee">Srabanti Chatterjee</keyword>, who is contesting from the Behala West constituency on a BJP ticket, is behind Trinamool heavyweight and state education minister Partha Chatterjee. The <keyword id="43826" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trinamool-Congress">Trinamool Congress</keyword> has written to Facebook CEO <keyword id="6354630" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mark-zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword> raising the issue of alleged bias of the social media giant towards the BJP, and claimed that there is enough evidence in public domain to substantiate this charge. Party MP Derek O'Brien, who has written the letter to Zuckerberg, also makes a reference to an earlier meeting between the two, where some of these concerns were raised. Sources in the party said that O'Brien met Zuckerberg in October 2015 in Delhi. "We, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), India's second-largest opposition party, have had serious concerns about Facebook's role during the 2014 and 2019 general elections in India," O'Brien wrote in the letter dated August 31, accessed by . "With the elections in the Indian state of West Bengal just months away, your company's recent blocking of Facebook pages and accounts in Bengal also points to the link between Facebook and the BJP. There is enough material now in the public domain, including internal memos of senior Facebook management, to substantiate the bias," he wrote. The Rajya Sabha MP also informed the CEO of Facebook that the matter was raised by the party in Parliament in June last year. "This was done during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address. We are enclosing the relevant portion (video) of that Parliamentary speech, along with this letter. "We were optimistic that the issues and concerns we raised on the floor of Parliament 14 months ago would empower other political parties and the media to also address this substantive issue, he said in the letter, adding, "The recent series of articles that appeared in the BBC, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Time Magazine and others, vindicate our stand." O'Brien also states that he had met Zuckerberg a few years ago and expressed his concerns over some of these issues and urged him "in the interest of transparency, to investigate these serious charges against Facebook's senior management in India". "Please do all it takes to urgently work towards maintaining the integrity of your platform in the Indian electoral process," the letter states. Earlier, the Congress party had written to Zuckerberg, demanding a probe into the alleged bias and interference of the social media giant's India leadership team in the country's electoral democracy, even as the BJP had taken a swipe at the opposition party, saying any organisation that does not work to its liking is accused of acting under BJP-RSS pressure. A massive political row broke out after a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) last week alleged that senior Facebook executives had opposed applying hate speech rules to posts by certain BJP leaders. Last month, a Facebook spokesperson had said, "We prohibit hate speech and content that incites violence and we enforce these policies globally without regard to anyone''s political position or party affiliation. "While we know there is more to do, we're making progress on enforcement and conduct regular audits of our process to ensure fairness and accuracy."
