Times Internet launches M360 publishing platform to empower digital publishers

As Buzzfeed points out, there's a lot of ill will towards the <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/rachelzarrell/time-warner-internet-is-down-northeast">company online due to the failure</a>.

And all that time we spend <keyword id="22508" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="online">online</keyword> has to come at the expense of something else. 
<a href="http://www.nber.org/papers/w19549?utm_campaign=ntw&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=ntw">A new NBER working paper</a> from the Technology Policy Institute's Scott Wallsten takes a look at what we've stopped doing as we've become more and more Internet obsessed. Basically, it examines the opportunity cost of time spent online. On the more obvious side, we spend less time watching TV, socializing offline, relaxing, and thinking. But leisure time online also comes at the expense of work, sleep, and education. 
Across all Americans, the time spent online for leisure, which includes everything from social media to reading news, is relatively low, just 13 minutes. But that doesn't count time spent on email, watching videos, and gaming, and includes the substantial share of people who don't use computers for leisure or at all. When you look at just people who do use the Internet for leisure, it's for more like 100 minutes a day. That share of people has grown rapidly in recent years:

Here are the estimates of what gets crowded out. Each additional minute of time spent online is correlated with 0.27 fewer minutes working; 0.28 fewer minutes spent on other leisure activities, mostly watching television; 0.12 fewer minutes sleeping; and 0.05 fewer minutes socializing offline:

One of the most concerning trends is the drop in time spent on education. Part of the large gap here is that people spend less time on education as they grow older. But Wallsten found that the effect on education of leisure time on the Internet is greater for younger people. Additionally, that young age group spends by far the most time online:

And whether or not you think that socializing online is inherently inferior to meeting up in real life, the trend is pretty clear. There's been a massive drop in the amount of time we spend socializing in person:

It's not easy to make a blanket statement that these effects are positive or negative. But it is clear that all of that extra time online comes at a cost to other activities. That makes it exceptionally difficult to figure out how much of our time on the Internet boosts productivity versus sapping it.

Or as analysts for Barclays, who highlighted the trend in a research note on Sunday, put it: "The internet is slowing big-time."Behind this seismic change is the end of another, larger shift: The end of mobile's half-decade of runaway growth. For the past five or so years, the explosion in smartphones has provided a perfect platform to turbocharge companies that sat on top of that; in 2019, players are well-established, competition is heavy, and consumers are locked into their chosen platforms - providing fewer opportunities for major growth."This tells us the underlying change agent is likely mobile going from a much stronger growth cadence from 2012-2016," Barclays analysts wrote, "as companies figured out how to leverage the new medium and as consumers shifted their traffic patterns from desktop, to today's much more saturated and mature stage for mobile."In other words, the mobile gold-rush is now firmly behind us, and future growth for internet companies will need to be much more hard-won.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">BarclaysAmazon unit growth ain't what it used to be.</div></div></div>So what exactly is going on? Pick an important tech metric - volume of messages sent, ride-hailing cars called, number of people music streaming, and so on. Chances are its growth rate is slowing down markedly. Barclays' analysts have identified a slew of these shifts, pointing to a broader trend in the industry. It's not really going into decline, but it is losing its meteoric trajectory that minted countless billionaires and made its stocks the hottest properties on Wall Street.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">BarclaysGoogle's estimated search query growth is also on the down.</div></div></div>The number of active Android devices will only grow an estimated 9% in 2019, compared to 50% in 2017. The number of messages sent across all of Facebook's apps is estimated to grow 10% this year, down from 33% two years ago. Digital mobile advertising is showing stronger growth but still slowing - to 40% in 2018, down from 109% in 2013. Booking.com's bookings grew 10% in the first quarter of 2019, down from 31% in Q4 2016."These are just a few examples, we could rattle off many more: ride-hailing bookings growth rates, Tencent's ads and games deceleration, Alibaba GMV and revenue deceleration, Baidu's ad growth implosion," Barclays analysts wrote. Uber started a campaign called #Leaveyourcarbehind, to promote shared mobility. Meanwhile, Ola announced that there will be no peak pricing on rides during the period of the odd-even scheme which is between November 4-15. “The implementation of the odd-even scheme offers an opportunity to further unlock the potential of shared mobility. While Google is working on bringing super-high-speed connections to homes in select cities, <a href="http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/43171.wss">IBM is working on a technology</a> that could make the Internet all around faster everywhere.
It has created a new chip that beefs up Internet speeds to 200 to 400 gigabits per second, about four times faster than today's speeds, <a href="http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/43171.wss">IBM says.</a> Plus it sucks up hardly any power.
At this speed, a 2-hour ultra-high-definition movie (about 160 gigabytes) would download in a few seconds. It would only take a few seconds to download 40,000 songs, IBM says.
The chip fits into a part of the Internet that runs between data centers, not your computer or home router. 
The latest version of the chip is only a prototype right now, so it will be a while before it gets installed and the Internet gets better.
However, IBM says it has already signed on a customer for an earlier version of the technology, a company called Semtech. Semtech makes a device that converts analog signals (like radio signals) to digital signals that can be piped across the Internet.
Equally interesting is that IBM says it will manufacturer the chip for the Semtech deal in the U.S. at its semiconductor fab in East Fishkill, N.Y.
That's of note because <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yes-ibm-is-trying-to-sell-more-units-2014-2">there's been speculation that IBM</a> may be looking for a buyer for its semiconductor manufacturing unit. Breakthrough technology like this could either help the unit grow revenues, allowing IBM to keep it, or allow IBM to sell it for a higher price.
