However, on a quarter on quarter comparison, its profits fell by 5% as it was hit by increased costs across streams — like travel expenses in addition to employee benefit costs. The company’s profit grew by 5% compared to last year. “It has been a challenging quarter from a cost management perspective. Our Q1 operating margin of 23.1% reflects the impact of our annual salary increase, the elevated cost of managing the talent churn and gradually normalizing travel expenses,” said Samir Seksaria, CFO of TCS. These costs loaded on to the company’s books and took the sheen off 16% revenue growth on a year-on-year comparison. Looking ahead, we remain confident in the resilience of technology spending and the secular tailwinds driving our growth,” said Gopinathan. When asked about the possibility of recession and its impact on the company, Gopinath said that the top management is having serious discussions on recession. “We do not see an immediate footprint of it in the near term,” he said at the press conference. TCS shares fell by nearly 15% in value ever since the start of this year, and they closed at ₹3,264 on July 8. The company’s share price declined 13% in April-June 2022, performing better than the Nifty IT index’s 23.14% drop in the same period. TCS profits grows at 5%, hit by salary hikes, talent churn and travel costs

Former <keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword> CEO Rajesh <keyword id="221979" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gopinathan" source="Orion">Gopinathan</keyword>'s overall remuneration jumped 13.17 per cent to Rs 29.16 crore in FY23, his last year as the chief executive of the largest IT services player. In the annual report for the fiscal year 2022-23, TCS said Gopinathan earned over Rs 25 crore as commission, a salary of Rs 1.73 crore and Rs 2.43 crore in other benefits. Gopinathan, who helmed the company for six years till May 31, had earned a salary Rs 25.76 crore FY22. Despite heading the largest company, Gopinathan's pay cheque is lower compared to peers and also lower than what his predecessor <keyword id="97017" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="n-chandrasekaran" source="Orion">N Chandrasekaran</keyword> drew in FY17 before being appointed as the Tata Sons Chairman. On his elevation to the CEO's seat from being a chief financial officer, Gopinathan drew Rs 6.22 crore in FY17 which doubled to Rs 12.5 crore in FY18 and had been steadily rising since but for a blip in FY20. Gopinathan has committed to help TCS in the leadership transition by being available till September, and is yet to reveal his future plans. K <keyword id="16817833" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="krithivasan" source="Orion">Krithivasan</keyword>, Gopinathan's successor, will be getting a basic salary of Rs 10 lakh per month which can go up to Rs 16 lakh, commission as decided by the board and other benefits like rent-free residential accommodation. The company's chief operating officer N G Subramaniam earned a total remuneration of Rs 23.60 crore for FY23, up from about Rs 20 crore in FY22. The annual report said the increase in managerial remuneration is at 13.58 per cent as against the median hike of 5.11 per cent across its 6.14 lakh permanent employees. Chandrasekaran thanked Gopinathan and also wished the best for Krithivasan in his note, and said TCS is significantly investing in building AI capabilities which include products and platforms that are AI-powered. "We will also invest in research areas important for the future, in collaboration with our global academic partners and start-up ecosystem," he added. Krithivasan, who has been with TCS for several decades, said he has interacted with customers, leadership teams and employees as part of the leadership transition and added that an order book of USD 34.1 billion, coupled with strong pipeline of replenishment, gives it a good visibility for the medium-term. Chandrasekaran also said that companies need to focus on building talent for the future as the energy, supply chain and AI (artificial intelligence) transitions are going to require companies to reskill or upskill existing talent base, hire and integrate new talent and invest in research. In his note to shareholders, Gopinathan spoke about overcoming the challenges on the HR front, and said TCS' best years are ahead. "We broke out of the vicious cycle of hiring and counter-hiring within the industry by investing in onboarding an unprecedented number of fresh engineers," he said, pointing out that it hired 1.10 lakh fresh engineers in FY22 and 44,000 in FY23. Its global head for human resources, Milind Lakkad, said half of its over 6 lakh workforce has been hired since March 2020 and underscored the need for staff to return to working from offices. "New employees get acculturated through physical interactions with senior colleagues and leaders, by observing and following their behaviors and ways of thinking. Without those interactions, employee engagement as well as acculturation got badly impacted," Lakkad said. Amid the talk of newer technologies like generative AI, Lakkad said the "linearity" between revenue and headcount is not going to go away any time soon. "With ever-increasing dependence on technology for competitive differentiation, we expect enterprise spending to keep growing, for which we will have to keep hiring new talent," he said. The company scrip was trading 0.89 per cent up at Rs 3263 a piece on the BSE at 1348 hrs as against gains of 0.27 per cent on the benchmark. Former TCS CEO Rajesh Gopinath got a 13% pay hike last financial year

<ul><li>Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced a second salary hike for its employees within a span of six months.</li><li>Last year in October, the IT major increased salaries by 6% to 8%.</li><li>This time around the company plant to hike wages by the same amount resulting in a cumulative boost of 12% to 14%.</li></ul>India’s biggest information technology (IT) services company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is set to dole out a second round of increments for its employees within a span of six months. The last salary hike was announced by the IT major in October last year, where the increase in wages was between 6% to 8%. Sources told Business Insider, on the condition of anonymity, that the salary increments will be around the same this time around as well. This means employees will have received a cumulative boost of around 12% to 14%. “We can confirm that we are on track to give increments to all associates across our geographies effective April 2021, in line with our benchmarks,” a TCS spokesperson told Business Insider. This comes after TCS’ attrition rate dropped to a record low of 7.6%, as of 31 December 2020. The company currently has 4,69,261 employees under its wing after adding 15,000 more to its roster between the months of September to December. According to Milind Lakkad, head of human resources at TCS, over 96% of the company’s employees were still working from home before the New Year with only 3.4% in office. Despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, TCS reported its strongest Q3 growth in nine years in 2020. There could be moderate risk to demand as fallout of the Russia-Ukraine imbroglio starts impacting key economies. Nonetheless, we believe double-digit growth is feasible for many,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Higher employee cost and shortage of skilled talent will remain the key challenges in the short term for IT companies. Profit margins of IT companies must be under pressure for January-March quarter due to record hiring and salary hikes

<ul><li><keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> reported a sequential decline in its net profit in the June quarter as high wage hikes weighed on it.</li><li>This caused Infosys’s EBIT margin to spiral down to the lowest point in the last two years.</li><li>Nomura has also lowered its earning per share (EPS) expectation by 1-3% for the next two fiscal years.</li></ul>India’s second largest IT services company Infosys reported a sequential decline in its net profit in the June quarter, as the high wage hikes weighed down on its margins. Infosys’s EBIT (or earning before interest and taxes) margin declined to 20.1%, the lowest in the last two years. The decline was due to multiple factors, including wage hikes, lower utilization and higher sub-contracting expenses, some of which will continue to impact the company in the ongoing September quarter as well. Brokerage firm ICICI Securities is of the view that the increase in travel costs, wage hikes for senior employees in Q2FY23 and supply-side cost pressures will weigh on Infosys margin. Nomura believes that the impact of wage hikes may be limited, while improvement of utilization and effects of price increases in contracts are likely to be gradual. Margin recovery likely an uphill task for Infosys after Q1 shock

<ul><li>The second quarter has always been a historically strong quarter, but Q2 FY24 is expected to be soft.</li><li>The demand picture is still weak and for most sectors, the slowdown has not bottomed out.</li><li>Vendor consolidation has led to a few large deal wins by the Big 3, but conversion to revenues will be slow.</li><li>Margin expansion will also be tough with a stable Rupee and cost levers yet to kick in. </li></ul>Little has changed for the Indian <keyword id="46964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="it-sector" source="Orion">IT sector</keyword> in the last three months. The second quarter earnings are expected to be as muted as the quarter before. IT sector clients are continuing with their budget squeezes, cuts in discretionary spending that’s bringing in less into the companies’ revenue kitty. Top-tier IT companies are expected to see a 0.8% fall in constant currency revenues to a tad over 1% growth on a quarter-on-quarter basis. At the highest end of the most optimistic expectations is a 1.3% growth. On a year-on-year basis too, most see lower single digit growth or a fall – showing that the fear of recession has taken over the market. Most analysts expect <keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infosys" source="Orion" topicspecial.url="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/infosys-ltd/stocks/companyid-10960.cms">Infosys</keyword> to retain its FY24 revenue growth, guidance of 1-3.5%. <keyword id="141968" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hcl-tech" source="Orion" topicspecial.url="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/hcl-technologies-ltd/stocks/companyid-4291.cms">HCL Tech</keyword> is widely expected to cut its 6-8% growth projections. Most others are expected to veer towards the lower end of the guidance as the first half remains muted. Where is the budget flush? The much awaited budget flush that could have changed the fortunes of the sector is still evasive. “The second quarter of FY24 is likely to be incrementally better than the first quarter. But nowhere close to what most players envisaged at year-beginning. Hopes of finding a bottom in the first half has not materialised, we believe, as project ramp downs/cancellations continue,” says a report by J M Financial. The second quarter has always been a historically strong quarter. And, this theory is all set to change. “Most of the demand indicators are trailing 10-15% below levels at the beginning of the year and only slightly better than the July lows,” said HDFC Securities. Across sectors, budget cuts have played out differently. For the key BFSI sector, spend cuts have bottomed out. The recovery however is gradual and may not be visible before FY25, says HSBC. Telecom sector which was one of the worst affected, along with high-tech and retail, could also bottom out in the second quarter. “We think the spending cuts have been unsustainably aggressive. Hi-tech demand has already started to improve from 2Q. Further, verticals like O&amp;G and manufacturing continue to do well,” says HSBC, which believes that Q2 will see a slight positive growth. It however does not see any major budget flush or V-shaped recovery. conversion Budget squeezes led to consolidation, with IT clients going in for mega deals. All the big three made top deal announcements in Q2. Infosys bagged a EUR1.5 billion deal from Liberty Global, in addition to a $454 million deal from Danske Bank. <keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion" topicspecial.url="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tata-consultancy-services-ltd/stocks/companyid-8345.cms">TCS</keyword> bagged a £800 million deal from Jaguar Land Rover. It also won a NEST € 810 million deal from NEST. HCL Tech also won a $2.1 billion deal from Verizon. “We believe deal flow has steadied after the transition from discretionary spending-powered short-tenured programs to larger programs fueled by cost take-outs, which have longer sales cycles,” said Kotak Institutional Equities. These kinds of deal wins are expected to continue and grow through the financial year, as discretionary spending. “While most IT services firms saw a further moderation in year-on-year revenue growth in the June quarter, deal wins accelerated. Since then, the large and mega deal win momentum has quickened, giving us confidence in strong growth for FY25,” said BNP Paribas. Large deals, however, are spread across five years, and tend to convert slowly into revenues. “Barring re-badging deals, ramp-up and hence revenue conversion of mega deals tend to be long drawn,” says J M Financial. The most watched metric for the IT sector this season would be Total Contract Value-to-revenue conversion pace. The others would be the extent of compression in the existing book of business, and greater-than-normal furloughs, says a report by Nirmal Bang. Rupee, salaries &amp; margins One advantage of a soft macroeconomic environment is Rupee depreciation that adds to the margins of IT companies. Rupee depreciated only by 1% on a quarter-on-quarter basis, adding little to the sectoral margins. “This slowdown is different. Indian Rupee is relatively stable and Covid-19-led cost rationalisation is still unwinding like travel costs and onshore mix,” says HSBC Global Research. Margin management is also expected to be tough going forward as the operating environment has turned hard. Unplanned benching due to sudden ramp-downs, shift in revenue mix towards cost-takeout deals and lower growth will add to the pain on the profitability end. Kotak also expects a marginal decline in the EBIT margin on year-on-year comparison, except TechM where the decline will be sharp. Increase in costs such as travel and back-to-office expenses will hurt. “Cost levers are yet to fully kick in,” the research firm adds. On the other hand, net hiring has been all but flat for most IT sector companies. This is also a reflection of the number of people who have been quitting, as its attrition rate hit the highest at 19.7% — that’s more than double of what it was in the same quarter last year. However, the company said it is on track to achieve its FY23 fresher hiring target. TCS said that its workforce is diverse, comprising 153 nationalities and with women making up 35.5% of the base. It also claims to invest in organic talent development. “In the first quarter, TCSers clocked 12 million learning hours, resulting in the acquisition of 1.7 million competencies,” the company said in a press release. It also accelerated its ‘return to office’ programme in Q1, with about 20% of the workforce now working from the office. Tata Consultancy Services or TCS posted a 5% growth in net profits in the first quarter of FY23 at ₹9,478 crore; but its net profits fell by 5% on a quarterly basis – as it was hit by increased costs most of which was employee benefits. TCS crosses the 6 lakh employee milestone even as 1 in 5 quit in the first quarter

The French IT multinational, with a heavy presence in India, is also giving away cash allowances worth ₹10,000 to employees who are not left with any means to relocate and are stranded without accommodation. In fact, the ‘shift allowance’ will now be extended to its ‘work from home’ employees as they practice social distancing. The company said that it will focus on retaining employees — even those on bench, who are not working on billable projects. Usually the grace period for those on bench is up to 60 days and IT majors generally have 8% of employees on the bench. Cognizant and BharatPe also hike salaries amid lockdown Digital payments startup BharatPe also decided to give its employees a hike. “I closed the appraisals two days ago and I have given a 20% hike to my employees. Capgemini India, Cognizant and others who are giving salary hikes in times of Coronavirus

However, the rise in attrition rate pushes such companies to hire more employees at competitive salaries, which eventually impacts their incomes. Today, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced that its employee attrition rate continued to rise during the January-March quarter reaching 17.4%. <div type="image" title="tcs attrition" height="900" width="1200" msid="90783459" hostid="261"></div>However, the company’s management said that the attrition rate is cooling off and may come down after a few quarters. “The reported attrition number of 17.4% will get worse for the next couple of quarters just because of the way LTM attrition is calculated. But what we are seeing is that on a month on month basis, we are starting to see flattening of it. So in absolute terms our attrition still went up this quarter compared to last quarter, but in percentage terms it has actually started to flatten and we think that the trend will continue into next quarter. So will [sic] have to wait and see, early days yet, but the curve is definitely flattening,” said Rajesh Gopinathan, chief executive officer (CEO) at TCS in a press conference for Q4 earnings release. The employee benefits expenses, which usually includes health insurance benefits, transport facilities, work from home policy and education assistance for retaining and hiring an employee grew by ₹15,740 crore in FY22 compared to the previous financial year. This shows a big hit on the firm’s expenses. The issue is not limited to TCS, but each IT firm in the industry as companies are hiring more employees with good hikes, promotions to mitigate those leaving the firm. On a brighter side, the IT major has hired over 1.03 lakh employees in FY22 with an army of almost 6 lakh people. TCS added 35,209 employees in the last three months. TCS CEO expects more employees to leave the firm in the coming months, but he is not worried about it — Here is why

In 2019-20, Gopinathan had received a total remuneration of ₹ 13.3 crore. According to TCS' annual report for 2020-21, Gopinathan received ₹ 1.27 crore in salary, ₹2.09 crore in benefits, perquisites and allowances, and ₹ 17 crore in commission. TCS Chief Operating Officer N Ganapathy Subramaniam drew a pay package of about ₹16.1 crore in the last financial year. This includes ₹1.21 crore in salary, ₹1.88 crore in benefits, perquisites and allowances, and ₹13 crore in commission. The increase in the managerial remuneration for the year was 55.22 per cent, the report said. "Increase in the managerial remuneration for FY2021 is not comparable with FY2020 owing to decrease in remuneration of 15 per cent in FY2020 in view of the economic conditions impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic wherein the Directors had decided to moderate the executive remuneration for FY2020 to express solidarity and conserve resources," it added. The average annual increase in salaries was 5.2 per cent in India. However, during the course of the year, the total increase is approximately 6.4 per cent, after accounting for promotions and other event-based compensation revisions. Employees outside India received a wage increase varying from 2 to 6 per cent, the report said. The increase in remuneration is in line with the market trends in the respective countries, it added. The report said the percentage increase in the median remuneration of employees in FY2021 was 0.03 per cent. TCS' permanent employee base was at 4,48,649 at the end of 2020-21 fiscal year. The 26th Annual General Meeting of the Mumbai-based company will be held virtually on June 10, 2021. TCS Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the company sees immense opportunities for growth, riding the new technology cycle that has kicked off, powered by the belief that its differentiated capabilities and collaborative, solution-centric approach makes it the preferred transformation partner of its customers. "It is building on that belief, and investing in sharpening the capabilities needed to expand its footprint in this large opportunity," he said in his letter to the shareholders. Despite a sharp fall in revenues in the first quarter, TCS made a swift recovery during the rest of the year and clocked full year revenues of ₹ 164,177 crore in FY2021. It was comparatively lesser before Covid. I am unable to save anything like earlier,” Sharma told Business Insider India. The expenses of living have grown across the country in the last four months due to food and fuel inflation. Moreso, urban areas are tighter on the pocket, making him look for ways and means to go back home. “If I had the option I would want to move back to my hometown. My expenses over there are quite low,” Sharma further added. India’s tech talent pool is from Vizag, Indore and Warangal — that’s where Infosys, TCS and others are heading

During these difficult times, the country’s second largest IT company, Infosys might just have another plan up its sleeve. It recently gave away 50 million shares as employee stock options (eSOPs), accounting to 1.15% of its total shares, to a large base of employees. “In the last 2-3 years salary hikes have not been very good. Added to that, the number of overseas opportunities have also been lower because of fewer H1B visa approvals. So a large stock option plan across a large share of employees is a good plan,” commented Mohandas Pai, the former CFO and HR head of the company, who is now a startup investor. This year, Infosys gave 6% salary hike to 85%<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/infosys-to-roll-out-6-annual-hike-for-india-staff-1-5-for-onsite-workers-119041201335_1.html"> of its employees</a>. Its peer, Tata Consulting Services (TCS) did no better with 2-6% hike for the same year. Infosys has a high rate of attrition at a little over 20%, and Pai believes that the company has been losing their employees to large MNCs. As newer technologies are being adopted by companies and clients, it is imperative for IT majors to retain their digital talent. Yet, few have been able to provide good salary hikes. Better performance As per the carefully crafted stock options, Infosys employees won’t have to wait too long to get their hands on the moolah, if the company does well. Unlike most employee stock options which specify a vesting date, a date at which they can be traded and sold—this is performance linked. “It is a reflection of how important performance is in an environment of strong demand. Performance based eSOPs essentially help employees grow with the company. It also helps the company align costs with revenue,” says Harit Shah, IT analyst at Reliance Securities. If challenging performance criteria like total shareholder return against industry peers, increase in total revenue, digital revenue growth and operating margins are achieved, these stock options can be vested! This way Infosys won’t have to pay upfront wage hikes, explains Shah, and wait to reap benefits later on. Matching the IT industry standards, India's third largest <keyword id="142326" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="software-exporter">software exporter</keyword> Wipro announced average salary hike of 7%. The hike is in line with its rivals <keyword id="6357585" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tata-Consultancy-Services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (<keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>) and <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>' announcements earlier this year. 
 

	TCS announced average salary hike of about 8% for its employees in India, while India’s second largest software exporter Infosys rolled out average wage increase of 6.5% in March, reports the Economic Times. "The <keyword id="102005" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wipro-Ltd-">Wipro Ltd.</keyword> has announced a salary increase for eligible employees, effective June 1, 2015. The average salary hike would be 7% for offshore employees and 2% for onsite employees, respectively, with high performers being rewarded with substantially higher increases in their compensation," said Saurabh Govil, global head - Human Resources, Wipro Limited. 
	 

	Wipro also raised the fixed pay salary component at the junior and mid-management levels. The <keyword id="6368235" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="IT-services">IT services</keyword> segment of Wipro has a headcount of 158,217, as of March 31, 2015. 
	 

	The company said, earlier, that it would give double-digit salary hikes to top performers. 
	 

	According to experts, employees in the IT sector are expected to get a 8%-10% average salary hike this year, but a top performer who has the right mix of technology and domain skills can expect more than double the average hike, going up to about 25% or even higher in some cases.
