The stock went up by 3.10 per cent to Rs 4,044.35 on the BSE. At the NSE, it rallied 3 per cent to Rs 4,044.90. The company's <keyword id="20097096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-valuation" source="keywords">market valuation</keyword> jumped Rs 40,359.77 crore to Rs 14,59,626.96 crore in morning deals. The stock emerged as the biggest gainer among the Sensex pack. "The positive domestic cue is the better-than-expected numbers from TCS and positive management commentary which can lift most IT stocks," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. In the equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 226.11 points to 80,123.45 in early trade. Net profit for the year-ago period stood at Rs 11,074 crore. The company - which competes in the IT services market with the likes of Infosys, Wipro and HCLTech - reported 5.4 per cent increase in revenue at Rs 62,613 crore for the quarter just ended. "I am pleased to report a strong start to the new fiscal year with all-round growth across industries and markets," K Krithivasan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of TCS, said in a release. TCS has declared an interim dividend of Rs 10 per equity share of Re 1 each. Meanwhile, other IT stocks -- Infosys, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies and Wipro -- were also in demand.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, in a blog post, said that working from offices has its benefits and therefore all employees will have to start coming to work the entire week. He added that even though they will permit work from home in case of emergencies (taking care of your sick kid, running emergency errands etc), remote work will no longer be the norm. <h2>Companies are calling employees back to offices</h2>Amazon isn’t the only company that has implemented the <keyword id="20007258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rto" source="keywords">RTO</keyword> (<keyword id="20408795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="return-to-office" source="keywords">return to office</keyword>) mandate. Companies like <keyword id="19945574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Wipro" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, TCS, X (earlier called Twitter) and Infosys also require employees to be there in office for at least three days a week. While X boss <keyword id="19903807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Elon-Musk" source="keywords">Elon Musk</keyword> had once asked those seeking work from home to “get off of their moral high horse,” Infosys CEO N. R. Narayana Murthy had made headlines for saying that workers in India should work 70 hours per week. In wake of Amazon’s recent RTO mandate, many young professionals are reacting strongly on the internet. While some feel that the RTO mandate will hamper their productivity, others feel that it is simply unnecessary. And then there are also some people who think that this is a good decision. Let us take a look at how people are reacting on being called back to offices. <h2>How are people reacting?</h2>Social media sites like Reddit, X, and LinkedIn are full of reactions on the RTO mandate. Many employees feel that this will increase their cost and time spent on commute. According to a statement from the IT services major on Tuesday, this to-be-developed sensing tool will hold the potential to unlock new levels of precision in the examination of <keyword id="20649044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="semiconductor-chips" source="keywords">semiconductor chips</keyword>, reduce chip failures and improve the energy efficiency of electronic devices. Over the next two years, experts from <keyword id="19950203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TCS" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="TCS" meta.hostid="268" meta.entityid="TCS">TCS</keyword> will work with Dr Kasturi Saha, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of IIT-Bombay to develop the tool. National Quantum Mission, an initiative of the central government, aims to position the nation as a global quantum technology leader. As semiconductors continue to shrink in size, traditional sensing methods lack the precision and capabilities to detect anomalies in the chips, TCS asserted. The to-be-developed Quantum Diamond Microchip Imager can image magnetic fields, enabling a non-invasive and non-destructive mapping of semiconductor chips, much like an MRI at a hospital. It uses the defects in a diamond's structure, known as Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers, together with the other hardware and software for detecting and characterizing anomalies in semiconductor chips. The semiconductor industry in India is still in a nascent stage, with various local and multinational companies intending to tap its vast potential. Union Minister for Communications and Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, earlier this year said, that by the end of 2024, India would witness the launch of the first indigenous semiconductor chip. Adding to the woes, Cognizant says full year guidance of 2023 is expected to be $19.2 - $19.6 billion, which would mean a decline of 1.2%. The next quarter revenue is expected to be at $4.83 - $4.88 billion, showing a decline of 0.6% to 1.6%, or a decline of 1.0% to flat in constant currency. Cognizant reported an operating margin of 14.6% for March quarter, which is lower than Indian IT giants TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra. For the full year 2023, the company has guided for adjusted operating margin to be in the range of 14.2%-14.7%. Following the peer IT major’s mixed bag of earnings which expects a decline in 2023 revenues, shares of most Indian IT companies were trading lower. It attributed the move to its NextGen program through which it expects to simplify its operating model and optimise corporate functions. “In the second quarter of 2023, we initiated the NextGen program aimed at simplifying our operating model, optimizing corporate functions and consolidating and realigning office space to reflect the post-pandemic hybrid work environment. Our drive for simplification will include operating with fewer layers in an effort to enhance agility and enable faster decision making,” the company said in a statement. Cognizant has a total headcount of 3.51 lakh in the March quarter, which is a decrease of 3,800 from the previous quarter. Its voluntary attrition rate declined to 23% in Q1 FY23 from 30% in Q1 FY22. "Our accelerated bookings growth in the quarter, which included several large deals and a healthy mix of new and expansion work, reflects the strengths of our services, our brand, and the longstanding relationships we have with our clients. I am also encouraged by the continuing reduction in our voluntary attrition," said Ravi Kumar S, CEO at Cognizant. “Having spent more than three months assessing the business, meeting with over a hundred clients and thousands of employees, I firmly believe Cognizant has a strong foundation for accelerating growth," said Kumar S in a statement. Cognizant braces for slow year ahead, to cut 3,500 jobs and slash office spaces

Group tours are set to cost more.</li></ul>Tax collected at source (TCS), and not the IT giant, was trending earlier in May after the Finance Ministry issued a notification stating that international credit cards would also be covered under the liberalised remittance scheme (LRS) – meaning a TCS of 20% would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/personal-finance/news/credit-card-now-under-lrs-ambit-20-tcs-to-be-charged-on-spends-using-international-credit-cards/articleshow/100323990.cms">apply to credit cards as well</a>. After facing a backlash, on May 19, another clarification was issued stating that payments made using international credit and debit cards up to ₹7 lakh shall be excluded from LRS. Hence no TCS shall be applicable on payments made by international credit and debit cards up to ₹7 lakh in a financial year. Any payment beyond ₹7 lakh shall attract TCS at the rate of 20%. However, confusion still prevails, and there is uncertainty on how this will impact foreign travel. People are wondering if there are ways to minimise the impact. We spoke to experts to find out. TCS to apply on forex card, cash exchanges without threshold limit “No specific clarification has been provided on the threshold limits for applicability of TCS on forex cards and cash exchanges, it is assumed that new TCS rules shall apply on forex card and cash exchanges,” says Kunal Savani, partner at law firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas. Hence, TCS shall be applicable at 20% on forex cards and cash exchanges without any threshold limit unless a specific clarification is issued by the relevant authorities. Says Suresh Surana, founder of RSM India, an audit, tax and consulting firm, “Assuming that a forex card would generate foreign exchange liability, the same would be covered under the scope of LRS, and TCS under section 206C(1G) would be applicable on the same without the threshold limit of ₹7 lakh as applicable in case of international credit, and debit cards.” TCS @20% applicable on entire amount when booking foreign tours “In case of overseas tours the Finance Act has amended section 206C(1G) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 thereby making TCS applicable on such overseas tours at the rate of 20%. No threshold limit has been provided, and hence a 20% TCS shall be applicable on the whole amount,” says Savani. The tour provider shall collect TCS at 20% in addition to the tour cost. This was introduced in Budget 2023, and has not been amended. It should be noted that the threshold relaxation of ₹7 lakh per financial year (FY) from TCS has been given only for overseas spending using international debit or credit cards. “This relaxation shall not be available for any remittances made from India for tour booking; and TCS on tour operators shall continue to be levied from ₹1,” says Vivek Jalan, partner, Tax Connect Advisory, a professional services firm. For example, if two people are going on a tour, and if the total cost is ₹5 lakh, then this will come under LRS, and the ₹7 lakh exemption will not be applicable. However, if they spend ₹5 lakh overseas on shopping, with international credit or debit cards, then the exemption will be applicable. Exemption applicable on a cumulative basis on all credit, debit cards “The exemption of ₹7 lakh applies to payments made through credit/debit cards only, and not to forex cards. From a reading of the press release, it appears that it is a combined limit applicable to payments made through credit, and debit cards taken together,” says Riaz Thingna, partner, tax, Grant Thornton Bharat, an assurance, tax and advisory firm. So, let us say that when travelling abroad with family in a certain financial year, someone spends ₹5 lakh on a credit card, and ₹5 lakh on a debit card. The first spend of ₹5 lakh from the credit card will not attract TCS as it is below the threshold of ₹7 lakh. The next spend of ₹5 lakh from the debit card will attract TCS in the following manner – there will be no TCS on ₹2 lakh, but a TCS @ 20% will apply on the balance ₹3 lakh. “However, if one uses a forex card, TCS @ 20% will be applicable on the amount of the foreign exchange credited to the forex cards without any exemption limit,” says Riaz. Minimise the impact of TCS on a foreign vacation When booking a tour package, there is no way one can minimise the impact of TCS when travelling abroad. “However, one may book in components, such as flights, hotels, etc., instead of booking a whole tour package,” says Nishant Pitti, chief executive officer and co-founder of EaseMyTrip. If the booking is done through a credit or debit card, one can get the benefit of the exemption limit. Also, LRS is available to all resident individuals including minors. Further, effective 1 July 2023, these new regulations would be applicable on all aggregate card spends above ₹7 lakh in a financial year, calculated separately for each resident individual. “Therefore, individuals travelling as a family/individuals travelling together, may separately spend amounts up to ₹7 lakh per financial year on credit cards, debit cards, while travelling abroad. In that case, TCS would not be applicable since it is below the threshold limit for each individual,” says Rajesh Srinivasan, partner at Deloitte India. If the total spend is exceeding ₹7 lakh, one may use credit or debit cards of different family members for booking to not pay any TCS. How to claim tax credit on TCS From July 1, 2023, Reserve Bank of India (RBI)- authorised banks would need to collect TCS. They would need to file quarterly returns, and provide necessary details including PAN of the Indian resident individual, and the amount remitted under LRS. TCS amount collected by the authorised bank would not be a sunk cost, and can be set-off against the tax payable on the individual’s total income (or) claimed as a tax refund in India. “Once quarterly TCS returns are filed by the authorised bank, the TCS amounts would reflect in Form 26AS of the Indian resident individual. Form 26AS refers to taxpayer’s records as available to the income-tax office, and contains details of taxable amounts remitted, and corresponding TDS and TCS,” says Srinivasan. TDS refers to tax deducted at source. He says that, therefore, no separate records need to be maintained by the Indian resident individual to claim tax credit later. Based on the Form 26AS (available in the individual’s login on the income-tax portal), the Indian resident individual can claim TCS as a tax credit or tax refund, while filing his/her income-tax return for the financial year. Also, the Indian government recently announced that it intends to automate the process of granting immediate TCS credit in case of salaried taxpayers. “The government proposes to link, and grant 20% TCS as credit against the monthly TDS due on the salary income of taxpayers. Procedures, and further announcements in this regard are expected in the coming weeks,” says Srinivasan. However, there is something that one needs to keep in mind. “The foreign exchange spend should be in proportion to the earnings. A person who spends say ₹10 lakh on a personal foreign tour in a fiscal year cannot declare an income of say just ₹12 lakh, or for that matter ₹15 lakh, all other things being constant,” says Jalan. TCS will make foreign tour packages more expensive upfront. However, the good news is that you can avoid TCS on your expenditures abroad, and get a tax credit easily in case you pay any TCS. New TCS regulations may pinch your wallet while travelling abroad. Here’s how you can minimise the impact

India’s top brands have borne the brunt of the global economic downturn in 2023. The combined value of Kantar BrandZ’s top-75 Indian brands shed 4% of their value to $379 billion in 2023. Yet, they have fared better than their global counterparts, as its global list has shed 20% of its value. Most of this loss in brand value was seen in Indian tech brands whose value shrunk by 14%. The brands have a major presence in international markets, and have been impacted by global pressures, recession threats and geopolitical instability, says Kantar. “If you exclude tech, the combined brand value is quite stable,” said Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer, South Asia, Insights Division of Kantar. TCS on the top, as usual The spot of India’s most valuable brand, however, is retained by tech giant TCS. It has shed 6% of its value but has fared better than tech as a sector. “TCS has a strong corporate reputation which makes it more likely to retain clients and business. It can also help enable customer retention which is also a factor that adds to brand value,” Deepender Rana, executive managing director of South Asia Insights Division at Kantar told Business Insider India. Infosys’ brand value dropped by 17%, while HCL Tech’s brand value rose by 3%. Both these brands made it to the top 10. Wipro’s brand value dropped by a sharp 42%. The rest of the list is dominated by banks, telecom companies with only one consumer company, Asian Paints in the top 10. risers of the year. TVS, valued at $1.9 billion, occupies the 51st rank. The company has gained 59% in value and leapt 24 places thanks to a number of successful product launches and a 10-year partnership with BMW that gives it leverage in markets such as Europe, the US and Canada. Mahindra is valued at $2.01 billion and occupies the 47th rank. Mahindra, which grew its value by 48%, made itself incredibly meaningful in consumers’ eyes, and also significantly boosted its salience. The sector saw the second highest category growth of 19%, after tobacco. Royal Enfield’s value also swelled, thanks to Indians’ preference for premium products. A lot of Indian auto brands, like Tata Motors, also entered EV markets and are able to meet consumer needs better, observes Rana. “Auto companies’ value declined during Covid and made a comeback after they dealt with supply chain issues and dealt with bottlenecks,” said Mohanty. India’s largest auto company Maruti Suzuki, however, shed 5% of its brand value, while Bajaj Auto’s brand value went up by 9%. The value in finance Financial services brands have grown their brand value by 6% with 16 brands and contributing to the biggest chunk of the total brand value. Their growth is attributed to growth in digital banking and Axis Bank whose value swelled 28% and now ranks at 17. ICICI Bank which ranks at no 6 also has seen its brand value swell by 18%. Two of this year’s new entrants also belong to the fintech sector — PhonePe and Cred. This is in spite of the fact that tech as a sector saw its value go down during the year. PhonePe has made its debut on the list at No.21 with a value of $4.4 billion. It has quickly become India’s leading digital payment app by investing heavily in the strength of its infrastructure, building connections with partner banks, and developing a huge network of merchant acceptance points, said Kantar. Meanwhile, Cred has entered at no 48 with a brand value of $2 billion. “Growth of credit and other digital trends are adding to the value of fintechs. There is a need for these services and brands are doing a good job of providing them,” Mohanty tells Business Insider India. PayTM, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Naukri, Oyo and Nykaa have shed value; while Byju’s hasn’t been included in the list this year. FMCG as a sector has seen its brand value remain stable during the year.
