Bisleri is India's largest packaged water company. Reports also said that Chauhan, aged 82, does not have a successor to take Bisleri to the next level of expansion. In an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/india/tata-consumer-to-acquire-bisleri-for-about-7000-crore/articleshow/95726148.cms">interview to ET </a>last year, Chauhan had said that he believed the Tata Group "will nurture and take care of it even better," while it was still a painful decision for him. "I like the Tata culture of values and integrity and hence made up my mind despite the aggression shown by other interested buyers," he said. In 1965, Italian doctor Cesari Rossi and Indian businessman Khushroo Suntook introduced Bisleri bottled water in India by setting up a factory in Thane. Later the companyacquired the struggling Bisleri brand in 1969. Bisleri has 150 operational plants and a network of 6,000 distributors and 7,500 trucks across India and neighbouring countries. Tata Consumer Products ceases talks with Bisleri for a potential acquisition

Due to security concerns over <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>, <keyword id="6355311" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword> has decided to deploy missile troops on remote islands near China and Taiwan, American broadcaster CNN reported. The country has ordered numerous troops, including missile units to ensure its hold in the region and showcase its defence capabilities. Around 570 men of Japan's Ground Self-Defence Force will be stationed at the recently built garrison on Ishigaki island in the prefecture of Okinawa, the country's military confirmed, according to CNN. The troops reportedly arrived on Thursday. Notably, the island of Ishigaki is quite famous amongst scuba divers and is located 200 kilometres south of the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands. The islands, which are known in China as the Diaoyu Islands and Diaoyutai in Taiwan, have become one of the key points of focus for increasing tensions in the region. Japan, amid growing security concerns, has been ramping up the construction of military bases in Okinawa, the band of 150 islands that curves to the south of Japan's main islands in the East China Sea, CNN reported. On Friday, two Chinese vessels entered Japan's territorial water near the Senkaku Islands on Friday, pursuing two Japanese fishing boats in the East China Sea, Japan's <keyword id="3110050" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nhk-world" source="Orion">NHK World</keyword> reported. The two Chinese ships reportedly entered Friday in territorial waters off Taisho Island between 4:20 and 4:50 a.m. (local time). The ships, along with two other Chinese ships, were previously cruising in the contiguous area just outside of Japan's territorial waters, the coast guard officials said. Friday's incident is the ninth time this year that Chinese government ships have been spotted in Japan's territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands, NHK World reported. Notably, Japan controls the islands, whereas China continues to claim them. According to history and international law, the islands are inextricably linked to Japan's territory, the Japanese government claims. Amid security concerns, Japan deploys troops on remote islands near China, Taiwan

Japanese Prime Minister <keyword id="1499440" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fumio-kishida" source="Orion">Fumio Kishida</keyword> has vowed to increase childcare leave benefits in a bid to reverse the country's plummeting birth rate. <keyword id="1529103" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kishida" source="Orion">Kishida</keyword> told a press conference on Friday that the next six to seven years will be <keyword id="6355311" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword>'s last chance to reverse its declining birth trend, noting that his administration will carry out unprecedented measures as a top priority to turn the situation around. Kishida said the government will provide assistance to employers to encourage their male staff to take childcare leave. Only about 14 per cent of eligible male workers in Japan took parental leave in 2021, while the government aims to raise the figure to 50 per cent in three years. The prime minister also pledged to provide benefits to freelancers and self-employed workers who stand to lose income after the birth of a baby. The number of babies born in Japan in 2022 slipped to a record low, falling under 8,00,000 for the first time since records began in 1899. The drop comes much earlier than the government expected. Kishida said his administration will reveal the new scheme's outline along with its policy package in June. Japan PM vows to raise childcare leave benefits amid plunging birth rate

Protesters have clashed with police again in central Paris over the French government's pension reforms. Thousands of demonstrators lit fires and some threw firecrackers at police, who used tear gas to disperse them. It is the second night of unrest since President <keyword id="6355124" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="emmanuel-macron" source="Orion">Emmanuel Macron</keyword> decided to push through the controversial reforms to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 without a vote, <keyword id="60684" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bbc" source="Orion">BBC</keyword> reported. No-confidence motions have been filed against his government in response. The first was signed by independents and members of the left-wing Nupes coalition in parliament, while a second came from the far-right National Rally party. Both are expected to be debated early next week, BBC reported. Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally MPs in parliament, called the decision to push through the pension changes "a total failure for the government." Police made dozens of arrests during the unrest at Place de la Concorde, not far from the parliament building, BBC reported. Protests also took place on Friday in other French cities - notably Bordeaux, Toulon and Strasbourg, BBC added. "We won't give up," one demonstrator told AFP news agency. "There's still hope that the reform can be revoked." Another told Reuters that pushing the legislation through without a vote was "a denial of democracy... a total denial of what has been happening in the streets for several weeks." The government has said the changes to pensions are essential to ensure the system is not overburdened and prevent it collapsing. But many people, including union members, disagree and France has now seen more than two months of heated political debate and strikes over the issue. Transport, public services and schools have all been affected, while a rolling walkout by waste collectors has seen thousands of tonnes of rubbish left on the streets of the capital, BBC reported. France pension protests: Crowd clashes with police, retort with firecrackers

The WHO has criticised <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> for withholding data related to samples taken at a market in <keyword id="208994" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="wuhan" source="Orion">Wuhan</keyword> in 2020 that could have provided vital information about the Covid-19 pandemic's origins, calling on Beijing to be transparent and to share results of investigations it conducts. The Huanan market in central China's Wuhan city was the epicentre of the pandemic. From its origin there, the SARS-CoV-2 virus rapidly spread to other locations in Wuhan in late 2019 and then to the rest of the world. "Every piece of data relating to studying the origins of COVID-19 needs to be shared with the international community immediately. These data could have - and should have - been shared three years ago," <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword> (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva on Friday. "We continue to call on China to be transparent in sharing data and to conduct the necessary investigations and share the results. Understanding how the pandemic began remains both a moral and scientific imperative," he said. Ghebreyesus said that last Sunday, the global health agency was made aware of data published on the GISAID database in late January, and taken down again recently. "The data, from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, relates to samples taken at the Huanan market in Wuhan, in 2020," he said. Ghebreyesus said while the data was online, scientists from a number of countries downloaded the data and analysed it. "As soon as we became aware of this data, we contacted the Chinese <keyword id="6379474" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cdc" source="Orion">CDC</keyword> and urged them to share it with WHO and the international scientific community so it can be analysed," he said, adding that WHO also convened the Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens, or SAGO, which met on Tuesday. "We asked researchers from the Chinese CDC and the international group of scientists to present their analyses of the data to SAGO. These data do not provide a definitive answer to the question of how the pandemic began, but every piece of data is important in moving us closer to that answer," he said. In a report Thursday, the New York Times said that an international team of virus experts said they had "found genetic data from a market in Wuhan, China, linking the coronavirus with raccoon dogs for sale there." The <keyword id="52850" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nyt" source="Orion">NYT</keyword> report said that the genetic data was drawn from swabs taken from in and around the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market starting in January 2020, "shortly after the Chinese authorities had shut down the market because of suspicions that it was linked to the outbreak of a new virus." While the animals had been cleared out from the market, researchers took swabs from the walls, floors, metal cages and carts used for transporting animal cages. "In samples that came back positive for the coronavirus, the international research team found genetic material belonging to animals, including large amounts that were a match for the raccoon dog," the report said, quoting three scientists involved in the analysis. The report noted that after the international team came across the new data, it reached out to Chinese researchers who had uploaded the files with an offer to collaborate. However, after that, the sequences disappeared from GISAID. Globally, there have been more than 760,360,900 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including over 6,873,400 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation. WHO said that three years later, while there are almost 7 million reported deaths from COVID-19, "we know that the actual number of deaths is much higher." Ghebreyesus expressed confidence that this year "we will be able to say that COVID-19 is over as a public health emergency of international concern." He however noted that "we are not there yet" given that last week, there were still more than five thousand reported deaths from COVID-19. "That's five thousand too many for a disease that can be prevented and treated. Even as we become increasingly hopeful about the end of the pandemic, the question of how it began remains unanswered," he said. "We have a duty to ourselves to end this pandemic as soon as possible. We have a duty to those we have lost to find out how it started," he said. The NYT report said that the "jumbling together" of genetic material from the virus and the animal does not prove that a raccoon dog itself was infected. "And even if a raccoon dog had been infected, it would not be clear that the animal had spread the virus to people. Another animal could have passed the virus to people, or someone infected with the virus could have spread the virus to a raccoon dog," the report said. "But the analysis did establish that raccoon dogs - fluffy animals that are related to foxes and are known to be able to transmit the coronavirus - deposited genetic signatures in the same place where genetic material from the virus was left," according to the scientists. They noted that the evidence was "consistent" with a scenario in which the virus spilled into humans from a wild animal. The new evidence comes weeks after a new intelligence assessment from the US Department of Energy pointed out that an "accidental laboratory leak" in China most likely caused the pandemic. "But the genetic data from the market offers some of the most tangible evidence yet of how the virus could have spilled into people from wild animals outside a lab. It also suggests that Chinese scientists have given an incomplete account of evidence that could fill in details about how the virus was spreading at the Huanan market," the NYT report said. Tech and banking brands accounted for over half of the total value. Six B2B tech brands and 11 consumer tech brands contributed 35% to the total value. Salience– the ability of brands to spring quickly to mind when a consumer has a need was a common feature in India’s Top 10 brands. Tech brands and banks account for half the brand value The list of 75 brands across 23 categories bounced back from the pandemic lows to increase their brand value by a massive 35% CAGR since 2020. India’s top 75 brands are worth a combined $393 billion, equivalent to 11% of India’s GDP. “India’s leading brands have grown at an exceptional rate, despite global economic headwinds, putting the disruption from Covid-19 behind them. Brand owners will need to work harder to identify and build on what makes them worth paying for and ensure ROI on their marketing expenditure to avoid a margin squeeze, ” <keyword id="10859748" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="deepender-rana" source="Orion">Deepender Rana</keyword>, executive MD - South Asia, Insights Division, Kantar said. Between August 2014 and June 2022, the equity index Sensex gained 63.8%, while the brand value of these companies rose 81.8%, claimed Kantar. As many as 11 consumer tech brands made it to the list and also contributed to 11% of the total brand value. The four most valuable brands in the consumer category were Flipkart (No. 12; $8.9 billion), Byju’s (No. 19; $5.5 billion), Swiggy (No. 20; $4.8 billion) and Nykaa (No. 25; $3.7billion). Airtel edges out Jio to lead in telecom Among telecom providers, Airtel stood at number 4 and Jio was placed at number 10. Key newcomers included Vi, ranked number 15 post the merger between Vodafone and Idea. Byju’s stood at number 19, becoming India’s most valuable education brand. As compared to the rest of the world, Indians are more willing to choose environment conscious brands due to ongoing climate change. Overall, 65% of Indians feel anxious about climate change, and 64% believe businesses must play their part, reported Kantar. The highest-ranking brands in the Top 75 are clear on purpose and have a relevant sustainability agenda. Platforms like <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>, ranked 30th, uses climate conscious deliveries by reducing and offsetting carbon emissions. Swiggy and Flipkart also help smaller local brands to connect with consumers via its platform. “Purposeful and sustainable brands are being rewarded. Indian consumers look further than the brand attributes that affect them personally – they want brands to improve people’s lives and have a positive impact on wider society,” Soumya Mohanty, managing director -insights division, Kantar said. <ul><li>A strong CEO-CFO partnership can determine the success or failure in digital transformation – especially in uncertain times like a pandemic.</li><li>With the right approaches, CFOs can help CEOs drive growth, manage risks, and boost organisational performance – starting with transforming the finance function.</li><li>Building a digital finance function will streamline financial reporting and accelerate and deepen a company’s ability to pinpoint both opportunities and threats.</li></ul>The Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) have been heavily involved in their companies’ digital transformations. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, global spending on digitising business practices, products and services is expected to grow by more than 10% to reach $1.3 trillion in 2020. Now CFOs must work closely with chief executives to steer their enterprises through the worst economic crisis in a generation. This CEO-CFO partnership — whether it is effective or not — will determine whether enterprises can withstand the financial impact of this crisis and move their organisations forward. Recent TCS research sheds new light on the unprecedented pressure that the pandemic has unleashed on organisations and particularly on their finance functions. A global survey of 287 companies, in July, with more than $1 billion in revenue found that 68% of them saw revenues decline. Moreover: <ul><li>Fewer than one-third of companies surveyed had implemented essential digital capabilities that enable them to pivot quickly in response to the crisis.</li><li> Only 23% have strong automation of core business processes</li></ul>For finance organisations with a mission to mitigate risks, shore up liquidity, understand how performance is changing and know precisely where the company and its customers stand. Lacking such capabilities is a wakeup call. Not having a sufficiently digital finance function means lacking accurate real-time data, and therefore navigating the crisis without a reliable compass. These organisations are now racing to catch up. Most are maintaining or accelerating their digital investments despite revenue pressures and the need to operate remotely. Companies have realised that such investment is critical to resilience and competitiveness during the pandemic and beyond. The investment also enables the CFO to better manage the organisation’s finances and support the CEO. The CFO’s unique role during a crisis A successful CFO generally sees herself as a strategic partner to the CEO. But during uncertain times, the CFO’s role typically changes. Risks and responsibilities rise. In some cases, crises also pose strategic opportunities. Some key matters that the CFO needs to address during a crisis include: <ul><li>External business risks: During uncertain times, litigation is likely to rise. Contracts that protect commercial and legal interests help the organisation stay focused and avoid unnecessary distractions. At the same time, having measures in place that help the company access what is rightfully due — such as contract clause monitoring, and early warning indicators — can assist with revenue growth and profitability.</li><li>Talent: As crisis-related anxiety levels soar, small steps can reinforce employee morale, loyalty and engagement. The CFO should ensure that payroll is processed on time, particularly if employees are concerned about the company’s stability. Additionally, the CFO should support empathetic policies for workers affected by the crisis. Especially in a services company or any organisation with a sizeable resource pool, it is beneficial in the short term to carry, as necessary, excess staffing capacity that will get absorbed once growth returns. This can help morale while boosting productivity when it is most needed. And the organisation can manage other costs to pay for the investment.</li><li>Driving growth: Uncertain times also present an opportunity to take a fresh look at the business and consider deploying different processes or frameworks. The finance function can help plan for such initiatives, building scenario analyses of how proposed changes will impact efficiency or optimisation. The function is also a key player in executing finalised plans.</li></ul>The CFO should also look at market penetration to assess opportunities for expanding the organisation’s horizons. Embarking on such projects demands not only investment capabilities but also the long-term conviction needed to make big moves despite economic turmoil. A wise decision during a crisis often delivers the best returns. A final consideration on growth involves the volatile currency and financial markets. It is critical for the treasury team to manage the enterprise’s currency and interest-rate exposures and continually take appropriate measures. This will help the CEO and business teams focus on business response, recovery and revival. <ul><li>Accurate forecasting: Always important, and it becomes even more consequential in times of uncertainty and disruption, when forecasts are more difficult. Of course, maintaining transparency and avoiding surprises is also important for investors and market participants.</li><li>Mergers and Acquisitions: There is usually a distinct ramp-up in M&amp;A activities during a crisis. The pandemic could present opportunities at attractive valuations. Companies often look to divest their non-core activities, which could constitute core businesses for another company. Having deployable funds and a long-term vision assists in such decisions. The CFO can play an important role by keeping the organisation in a state of readiness.</li></ul>Establishing the CFO as a strategic partner to the CEO TCS has observed that companies with highly digital finance functions have performed better over time, and particularly during the crisis. A CFO can be an effective partner to the CEO by seizing the opportunity to deploy digital capabilities that can improve efficiency and inform the executive team’s strategic decisions. In brief, a highly digital finance function helps a company and its CEO in several key ways. It is able to close the books and report financial results publicly on time and without extra manual effort. Digitisation ensures that team members can produce financial statements regardless of where they are working, and a timely release of financial results helps to reassure stakeholders that the company is operating smoothly despite crisis-related disruptions. Additionally, a digital finance function can more easily identify troublesome business areas and offer helpful ideas for addressing their challenges. For instance, the department can help determine which costs are strategic and should not be cut, and which costs can be delayed or reduced. Finally, the digital CFO can keep a close watch on collections, liquidity and any delinquency and take proactive steps to mitigate risks. These capabilities are always advantageous but given the sudden and intense disruption that many companies are experiencing during the pandemic, they are more important than ever. TCS’ finance department’s digital transformation Our observations about the effectiveness of highly digital finance offices are based not only on research and client experience, but also on the TCS finance department’s digital transformation. This experience offers instructive lessons for CFOs across industries, particularly during the current crisis. The pandemic hit TCS at perhaps the worst possible time for the finance function, just a few short weeks before the fiscal year ended (March 31, 2020). Even though all members of our finance team and auditors were working remotely from their homes, we were the first Indian public company to announce our fully audited results of operations from more than 50 countries where we do business. Results were released on schedule in April. This, at a time when, for instance, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission had issued a 45-day earnings extension and a number of companies in the S&amp;P 500 were delaying their quarterly earnings releases. Moreover, TCS was the first company in India to hold a virtual annual shareholder meeting. This occurred on June 11, 2020, the same date that had been scheduled months before the pandemic hit. This was only possible because we had extensively digitised our finance function over nearly two decades. TCS is a $22 billion company with 470,000 employees and more than a thousand large customers. Such a business cannot run efficiently or effectively without an integrated, enterprise-wide, single-instance financial accounting and reporting system. We undertake so many transactions that no one person — or even a team of people — in finance can see patterns rapidly or with the needed microscopic granularity. Technology is the lynchpin, the enabler. Capitalising on the digital transformation of the finance unit As the COVID-19 pandemic has made abundantly clear, every enterprise needs a digitally sophisticated finance function. Such a function is a means by which the CFO can be an indispensable partner to the CEO in running an organisation that is resilient and financially stable. Digitisation also enables the CFO and C-suite colleague to ensure that the organisation maintains adequate liquidity, generates strong cash flow, reduces the working capital cycle, and mitigates enterprise risks. A digitally transformed finance function also empowers the CFO to prioritise strategic investments and interventions that let the enterprise realise its core purpose. Of course, digital transformation cannot be achieved overnight. The initiatives and investments need to be made over time. Teams must be trained and oriented toward working in a highly digitised environment with a culture of adaptability tied to the organisation’s purpose. For the journey to succeed, having the right team is essential. Digital finance teams are content to let technology serve as bean counters while they focus on the company’s goals. They form an organisation that enables business unit leaders to understand what is happening based on key metrics and help implement interventions to deliver better results. This way the CFO can fulfill their role as an effective partner to the CEO and help the organisation thrive. <ul><li><keyword id="10071444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samir-Seksaria">Samir Seksaria</keyword> will be coming in as <keyword id="6357585" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-consultancy-services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword>' (TCS) new chief financial officer on May 1.</li><li>He has been will the company for over two decades.</li><li>Seksaria joined TCS within two years of finishing his graduation in 1997.</li></ul>India’s biggest information technology (IT) company in India will have a new chief financial officer starting May 1 — and he’s been with the company for over two decades. Samir Seksaria, who was leading Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) business finance vertical, will now officially be responsible for all of the company’s financial affairs. Seksaria’s journey with TCS began in 1999. This was two years after he graduated from Narsee Monjee College in Mumbai and completed his certification to become a charted accountant (CA). He spent his early years with the software exporter on consulting assignments. This included anything from regulatory compliance to merger and acquisition spin-offs. What many may not know is the fact that he also had a key role to play when TCS initially went public back in 2004. Since then, he’s been involved in various financial transformation journeys such as simplification, better cash management, and other financial aspects. Seksaria will be reporting directly to the TCS’ chief executive (CEO), Rajesh Gopinathan, as he takes over the reins from Ramakrishnan V, who will be retiring today, on April 30.
