We have mimicked every activity that happens within a classroom — assignments, hands-on activities and more,” Venguswamy Ramaswamy, global head, TCS iON told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. All the educational institutions have been asked to shut down and suspend classes till March 31, as a precautionary measure. “These are unprecedented times. With schools and colleges shut down across the country, we want to empower these institutions and help them switch to a virtual mode, so students’ learning journeys can continue uninterrupted on our platform. I do hope large numbers of public and private institutions will take this opportunity to use technology to overcome the disruption,” he added. In addition, the platform also provides an embedded live classroom for a better learner experience. However, it is still in a grey area when it comes to regulations on assessment. “As far as certification and other requirements are concerned, you still need an assessment. Today, we provide an assessment capability where one can do a remote programme to ensure it's a free assessment. But we still have to wait how the regulators are going to look into it and whether they will agree to take this as the final assessment. Will they ask for a physical assessment later — that is yet to unfold,” he said. Ramaswamy also added that the move can also revolutionize distance learning. This is in line with the initiatives proposed by the United Nations as well, which proposed solutions for inclusive distance learning programmes. “While temporary school closures as a result of health and other crises are not new unfortunately, the global scale and speed of the current educational disruption is unparalleled and, if prolonged, could threaten the right to education. So, there is a human proctor who gets a red prompt when there is a deviation or noise at the candidate’s end. It also doesn’t allow opening any other browser on the device,” Sinha explained. The platform only allows to view one question at a time — which can not be skipped without answering. “Our algorithm gives a credibility score at the end of the exam based on several parameters like the time spent, body movements, ambient noises and red alerts and more. It also enables invigilators to proctor candidates in real-time. “This will ensure that exam administrators are able to conduct exams in a secure way, at speed and with no dependency on the candidates’, proctors’ or exam administrators’ location. Here’s how TCS and MeritTrac solutions aim to stop candidates from cheating during online exams

New Delhi, Apr 27 () TCS iON, a unit of IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), on Monday said it has launched a free online self-certification course -- Corona Warriors -- on its platform to prepare frontline health workers in dealing with COVID-19 patients. The course has been designed and curated by medical experts of TCS Lifesciences unit, along with inputs from subject matter experts who are faculty at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, according to a statement. The course is a six-hour, self-paced self-certification programme that can be accessed from anywhere on any device, it added. "The programme has been especially designed for the paramedical and professional healthcare workers. It also offers profession-specific measures for nurses, pharmacists, receptionists, laundry, radiology, technicians and biomedical waste management staff," it added. The course offers recommendations on various topics such as virtual support practice, infection control policies, mental health education, resident awareness, travel mode sanitisation, visitor movement management, social distancing protocols and laboratory testing guidelines by WHO. The course is digitally available in English and offered through TCS iON Digital Learning Hub. TCS iON said that with the rise of the COVID-19 cases, it has become critical for India to prepare its health workers as frontline warriors to deal with the patients and suspects. "This will be one of the proactive response mechanisms that India should be prepared with to effectively deal with this unprecedented pandemic. You can soon take IIM Bangalore courses online, thanks to its partnership with TCS

The platform, which was launched around five years back, had failed to revolutionise the small-and-medium business space by offering them computing capabilities at a low cost. 
 
Now, it is used for conducting examinations in the country and how. 
 
"iON has about Rs 1,000 crore ($158 million) in revenue now. It could become a separate unit because it has an entirely different way of working," a TCS executive with knowledge of the platform told Economic Times. 
 
However, the company had targeted to reach $1 billion when it launched iON in 2011. 
 
"Education was a bright spot. Mid-2012, the exam functionality was improved and then that took off," another TCS executive who worked on iON told the financial daily. 
 
Last year, it won a five-year contract to conduct the Common Aptitude Test (CAT), the gateway to the Indian Institutes of Management and over 150 other business schools in the country, beating six other bidders. 
 
The company also facilitates other exams using iON platform like Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, the IIT-Joint Entrance Exams, and recruitment exams for Life Insurance Corporation of India. 
 
TCS chief executive N Chandrasekaran, while addressing a gathering at Morgan Stanley Annual India Summit in June, said that their assessment engine was today the platform of choice for all the leading competitive exams in the country, and was used to assess 30 million candidates last year. 
 
ET reported that earlier this year, TCS won a pilot that could overshadow the rest of its contracts. 
 
Meanwhile, iON is only a minuscule of TCS' revenues which stood at about $15.5 billion, or about Rs 97,850 crore, last fiscal. 
 
"No structure is permanent, it has to evolve, but at the same time we should not make changes for the sake of making changes. If the cloud platforms all grow large and gain revenue, there has to be a different structure for the cloud platforms. If a certain area of the business becomes headcount intensive, and others become less intensive then they will need different structures," Chandrasekaran had told ET in an interview in April. iON is also being handled differently inside TCS, he had said.

New Delhi, Nov 20 () IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Wednesday launched an innovation hub in Hyderabad with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc that will be used to build domain-specific solutions to help enterprises across industries accelerate their digital transformation journeys.
 "The new hub will be used to build domain-specific solutions that utilise the combinatorial power of AI, IoT and 5G technologies to help global enterprises across industries accelerate their digital transformation journeys," a statement said.
 It added that the hub will utilise TCS' expertise in digital technologies, along with Qualcomm Technologies' depth in 5G, edge AI and edge devices to build solutions to entirely new use-cases.
 The innovation hub will explore the possibilities opened up by 5G in different industries such as healthcare, automotive, manufacturing, retail, utilities.
 "Solutions developed at the hub will help customers embrace new business models, offer differentiated products and value-added services, deliver sophisticated customer experiences, and generate new revenue streams," it added.
 In a separate statement, TCS iON, a strategic unit of the Mumbai-based TCS, said it has launched 'TCS iON Industry Honour Certification'.
 The 'phygital' learning program will enable university students to opt for courses in domains such as AI, robotics, cloud computing, data mining, analytics, IoT, and cyber security.
 "These courses, curated in collaboration with industry experts and academia, will help students align their skills with industry applications, and become job ready. Students will be able to access these courses anytime, anywhere and on any device throughout the duration of their degree program," the statement said.
 Amity Group is among the earliest partners to sign up for the programme to equip its 1.75 lakh students with new-age skills.

A proposed reduction of basic customs duty rates on goods other than agriculture and textiles from 21% to 13% is seen as another positive, while the relief in taxes is also expected to boost consumer spending by salaried consumers. Also, the finance minister said that more funds would be allocated towards scrapping old vehicles by the central government. "In addition to the vehicle scrappage policy announced in Budget 2021-22, more funds have been allocated now to support efforts to scrap old vehicles under the central government. States will also be supported to help them scrap old vehicles and old ambulances," said Sitharaman in her budget speech. This is seen boosting the commercial vehicles industry. New Delhi, Apr 7 () COVID-19 has spelt disaster for many sectors but one segment witnessing strong growth is ed-tech that has seen individuals - both school students and professionals - taking up online courses to study and enhance their skills amid the ongoing lockdown. BYJU'S, which is backed by investors like Tiger Global, has witnessed a 150 per cent increase in the number of new students, with over six million new students joining the app in the month of March. The company has recently introduced free 'Live Classes' on its platform to support students in their learning journeys. Similarly, upGrad - which offers online programmes for working professionals - has on boarded 4,000 learners in March, and now aims to double this to 8,000 in April. The ongoing economic slowdown has made working professionals somewhat skeptical of the job environment in 2020, and they are therefore looking at upgrading their skills and staying ahead in the professional spheres. Swathi Karanth, a learner from Bengaluru who enrolled on upGrad, said his concern when the lockdown was announced was whether he will have a job in the next three months. "I was told most companies would really tighten their belt over the next six months and only the better performers will survive," he added. The government, on March 24, had announced a complete lockdown in the country for 21 days to contain the spread of the coronavirus infection. While schools are shut, many of them have started conducting online sessions to ensure students do not get impacted. Similarly, many professionals have been asked to work from home to ensure business continuity. This also presents a growth opportunity for ed-tech platforms that can offer short-term courses to these professionals to help them enhance their skills. According to Debjani Ghosh, president of Nasscom, coronavirus has thrown up "exceptional challenges" across the world and industries. "While we continue to fight these challenges as a nation, amidst lockdown and remote working scenarios, it is extremely important that we continue harnessing our skill sets on emerging technologies to become future ready...we would encourage all stakeholders to use this opportunity of working from home to upskill themselves in the skills of the future," she added. The industry body has partnered Electronics and IT Ministry to launch an on-demand courseware on artificial intelligence. Similarly, TCS iON, a strategic unit of India's largest IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services, has announced a free, 15-day self-paced digital certification programme that has been specially designed for college students/working professionals to enhance their career skills by helping them effectively utilise the time at hand during this period of lockdown. Microsoft’s solutions have already been witness to a successful pilot which was conducted during one of Class 10’s compartmental examinations. Which is why they’re now going to launch the program for Class 10 and Class 12 classes pan-India across 20,299 schools. Encrypted conversations Using a software solution that’s built on Windows 10 and Office 365, the Controller of Examination can monitor the whole pipeline. It starts with the CBSE administration initiating the process at his end. Once that’s done there’s an outflow of emails to each of the exam centers with a link to OneDrive, Microsoft’s file-hosting service, enclosed within. The exam administrator can then download the exam paper that is specific to his exam centre. All the papers are watermarked so that they can be tracked in case of a leak and even the exam administrator has to clear a two-factor authentication to access the papers. None of this can even be activated until it’s 30 minutes to the exam start time. This measure alone reduces the risk of a leak by limiting the preemptive time frame. Paper leaks and examination controversy is no stranger to India. It’s actually one of the many reasons that the government conducts a lot of its entrance exams online in partnership with TCS iON, a unit of Tata Consultancy. Since their examinations are completely online, the scope for human error is greatly reduced. Time alone will tell whether or not Microsoft’s solution will hold up to the promise of saving time and money while increasing security.
