India's largest software services company <keyword id="6357585" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Consultancy-Services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (<keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>) has 91 employees in India who got paid more than Rs 1 crore in form of salaries in fiscal 2017, a number significantly higher than rivals <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> and <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>. Out of these, 22 employees have spent their entire careers at the TCS. In comparison, Infosys has 51 executives who take home more than Rs 1 crore per annum, out of which about 16% started their careers with the Bengaluru-headquartered company. Wipro, on the other hand, has 61 such employees, out of which about 27% have been with it throughout their careers. "TCS is much bigger than Infosys or Wipro, and executive stability has been a defining factor for the company," an analyst with a Mumbai-brokerage told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/ites/tcs-way-ahead-of-of-the-field-in-race-of-crorepati-executives/articleshow/59673309.cms">ET</a>, requesting anonymity. "They also tend to promote from within. It is rare for an executive to come in from outside," he added. TCS employees who are stationed outside India could be earning significantly more because of being compensated in foreign currencies. These include Surya Kant, who runs TCS' North America, UK and Europe operations and <keyword id="4787917" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="amur-lakshminarayanan">Amur Lakshminarayanan</keyword>, who oversees its Japan business.

TCS has way more number of crorepati executives than its rivals

"When the technology is new or the demand is good, you don’t optimise. But, now that the volumes have started kicking in, we can get younger guys and train them," Rajesh Gopinathan, CEO and MD of TCS, told Business Insider. Last quarter, TCS hired 40% of the planned 30,000 fresh graduates. "It is a part of the plan to keep costs low," added Gopinathan. It hired another 14,097 employees this quarter, the highest ever number of employees that have been on boarded by the company in a quarter. As of 30 September 2019, TCS consolidated headcount stood at 450,738. "By valuing our employees for the contextual knowledge they possess, and continually investing in equipping them with newer technology skills, we have established an industry benchmark in our ability to attract talent across the world," stated Milind Lakkad, the global head of human resources at TCS.

This is after they added 12,356 employees during the first quarter of the year, which is the highest ever addition in the last five years. They had given out 30,000 joining letters to freshers and 40% of them have come onboard already. This hiring plan comes on the back of strong growth in revenues at 10% in the first quarter ending June 2019. Its profits too grew by 10.8% to ₹8,131 crore as compared to ₹7,340 crore in the first quarter last year. The company also said that its attrition is at 11.5%. “TCS account teams are better placed to retain the contextual knowledge gained over time, and use that to build differentiated solutions tailored to each customer’s unique requirements,” said Milind Lakkad, Global Head, Human Resources in a press release. Digital Transformations TCS also said that more of its customers are undertaking digital transformation projects, swelling its orderbook. “We have had a steady start to the new fiscal year. We see customers continuing to spend on their growth and transformation initiatives, and that is showing in our strong order book and deal pipeline this quarter,” said Rajesh Gopinathan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of TCS. During the quarter, the company gained two large financial sector clients during the quarter. “We are confident of the future as we embrace deeply the Machine First philosophy in delivering experiential and modern solutions to our clients,” said N Ganapathy Subramaniam, Chief Operating Officer &amp; Executive Director. To be able to deliver these services, TCS has also trained over 315,000 employees in new digital technologies.

TCS to add 18,000 freshers in the next three months

BANGALORE: TCS has become the world's third largest employer of people in the technology sector, with over 3 lakh employees. And given the pace at which it is growing, it could become the second largest employer this year, crossing Hewlett-Packard, and would be fast closing in on leader IBM. 
 
In India, it's one of the biggest creators of jobs in recent years, possibly even the biggest. Besides the Indian army, government departments like the Indian Railways and India Post, and PSU companies like Coal India, there's perhaps no other company that has more employees. And unlike the government departments, which are mostly reducing their staff strength, TCS numbers are rising each year by between 25,000 and 35,000.

 In the last fiscal year, the $13.4-billion <keyword id="146310" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Group-company">Tata Group company</keyword> hired 61,200 people, with the net addition being 24,268, discounting those who left the company. The net addition in each of the past several years has been along similar lines or higher. 
 
 
 
 
 
On the contrary, for some of the leading global tech companies, numbers are dropping given the transformations they are going through to deal with shifts in technology towards areas like cloud computing and mobility. HP had 349,600 employees in 2011, but that number is now down to 317,500. IBM, which has about 4.3 lakh employees, is also in the midst of layoffs. 
 
 
 
 
TCS has said it will hire 55,000 people this year. If the net addition is half of that, it will be well ahead of HP's number by the end of this fiscal. Among Indian IT companies, Infosys is almost 50% of TCS with 1.6 lakh employees. 
 Sanchit Vir Gogia, chief analyst at Greyhound Research, says TCS is ahead of many of its Indian peers in identifying new areas of growth, making <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> and all the right noises. "It is betting big on the Digital Five Forces—mobility, big data, cloud, social media and robotics," he said. 
 
Analysts also find it remarkable that it has grown its people strength so quickly, and yet created an organizational structure nimble enough to handle these numbers. Equally, it has kept its people costs under such control that it is seen as a major factor in its extremely high operating margins (over 28%), perhaps the highest among large companies in the global IT services industry. 
 
Pradeep Mukherji, president and managing partner in global management consulting firm Avasant, said TCS is managing the huge workforce by breaking it into smaller business units that each function virtually as a smaller company. "The depth and breadth of middle management and work delegation, managing a good onshore and offshore mix are some of the key drivers in managing the employee pyramid effectively," he said. 
 
TCS' employee cost has risen from Rs 90 billion in 2007 to Rs 319.2 billion in 2013, but the cost per employee has barely risen in these past seven years. The cost per headcount has grown from Rs 11.5 lakh in 2007, to Rs 12.4 lakh) in 2013, an annual increase of a mere 1.2%, said a report by US-based IT advisory firm HfS Research. "A conservative estimate of 8% annual wage hike in India, 2% hike in developed countries and 4% hike in developing countries will lead to about 7.5% weighted average annual wage hike for TCS' mix of employees," said HfS analyst Pareekh Jain. In other words, TCS has been able to offset its salary hikes through other measures. 
 
One of the biggest of these looks to be a sharp increase in its fresher intake relative to the intake of experienced employees. The percentage of freshers hired (of total hiring) increased to 81% in 2013 from 51% in 2007, finds HfS. 
 
"They have stretched the employee pyramid with an army of junior employees. TCS is aggressively hiring in tier-2 and -3 cities that offsets cost to a large extents TCS has also focused on automation and reusable software tools and frameworks to improve employee productivity," said Sudin Apte, CEO of IT advisory firm Offshore Insights. 
 
Jain believes that hiring more freshers has given TCS the flexibility to deploy them in lower value and transactional activities, thus freeing up experienced resources for higher value work. "Secondly, training freshers for new skills is easier than retraining old resources for new skills," he said. 
 <keyword id="1643718" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ashish-Chopra">Ashish Chopra</keyword>, IT analyst with brokerage firm Motilal Oswal, noted that TCS had also significantly reduced the proportion of employees at client sites overseas, thus reducing the salary burden. 
 
But some also caution that adding employees in such large numbers may not be the best way to go in the longer run. "Linear employee growth is not a sustainable solution in the long run as newer technologies are nudging IT firms to explore non-linear revenue growth, growth delinked from headcount," said Mukherji. 
 
Gogia echoed that: "With new technologies, especially automation, shaping the world, it's only prudent that TCS utilizes its employees effectively."

TCS May Soon Be World's Second Biggest Tech Employer

The last salary hike was announced by the IT major in October last year, where the increase in wages was between 6% to 8%. Sources told Business Insider, on the condition of anonymity, that the salary increments will be around the same this time around as well. This means employees will have received a cumulative boost of around 12% to 14%. “We can confirm that we are on track to give increments to all associates across our geographies effective April 2021, in line with our benchmarks,” a TCS spokesperson told Business Insider. This comes after TCS’ attrition rate dropped to a record low of 7.6%, as of 31 December 2020. The company currently has 4,69,261 employees under its wing after adding 15,000 more to its roster between the months of September to December. According to Milind Lakkad, head of human resources at TCS, over 96% of the company’s employees were still working from home before the New Year with only 3.4% in office. Despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, TCS reported its strongest Q3 growth in nine years in 2020. TCS to dole out a second salary hike within a span six months

TCS to kickstart lateral hiring and bring back 5% of its employees to offices

In comparison, TCS has 91 employees having annual salary above ₹10 million in FY17, and the count has increased to 103 in 2019. The annual remuneration includes salary, cash incentives, allowances and the company’s provident fund component. TCS has 100 people earning over ₹10 million-- and a third of them started their careers in the company

It is raining cats and dogs in Chennai and its suburbs. The torrential rains, which are the worst in 100 years, not only crippled normal life but also put IT giants like TCS, Infosys, Cognizant, and the automobile sector in a tight spot. 
 
As rescue operations are on war-footing, IT companies have issues respective codes and guidelines for its employees to ensure seamless work so that clients do not suffer. 
 
For instance, Cognizant sent some of its employees to a different office and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) held some key resources at its offices only. 
 
Cognizant also held on to few critical employees even though its facilities were operational. 
 
"For employees who have chosen to stay back at our facilities to provide uninterrupted 24x7 support to critical client projects, we have made the necessary accommodation and food arrangements. We have implemented our business continuity plan and are closely monitoring the situation," a Cognizant spokesperson told ET. 
 
HCL Technologies, too, invoked a plan and offered employees a 'flexible work schedule'. 
 
Meanwhile, TCS also made transportation arrangements for its employees. 
 
"We would advise all associates, particularly those who have come by two-wheelers, to avail themselves of TCS transportation of car-pool with your colleagues wherever possible. Any decision on Wednesday's working will be communicated to you later in the day," stated a communique to TCS employees. 
 
Infosys runs a large office close to the Veerapuram lake, which swelled and flooded the IT SEZ, and had to close its office early. 
 
The company released a statement saying, “As a precautionary measure for the safety of our employees due to flooding at the Infosys campuses in Chennai, we have closed our offices early on Tuesday. The Mahindra City campus has seen some flooding due to neighbouring lakes overflowing due to the incessant rain." 
 One of the worst hit sectors was automobile as <keyword id="3157783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-rains-in-Chennai">heavy rains in Chennai</keyword> delayed production and delivery of vehicles. 
 
Renault Nissan produced fewer cars by about 300 numbers. BMW India, too, had to shut down. 
 
ARMY DEPLOYED FOR HELP 
 
Army and NDRF personnel have been deployed in Chennai after the Tamil Nadu government sought military assistance. The Navy is also on stand-by. 
 
All flight operations at Chennai airport were suspended and 11 foreign and nine domestic flights from the airport were put on hold as no landing or take-off was allowed till late Tuesday evening. 
 
The rains have virtually broken a 100-year-old record with one day's rainfall covering a month's average.

TCS is running on women power, with over 150,000 permanent employees

Stock brokerages have cut estimates on the stock performance of TCS after a muted performance in the second quarter. Morgan Stanley has trimmed their estimates by 1- 3.5% with a target of ₹1980 per share. Phillips Capital also downgraded their estimates but expect that growth will pick up during the next financial year as strong deal momentum, lower attrition and strong cash flow kick in. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)’s net profit for the second quarter stood at ₹8,042 crore which is a percent lower than last quarter’s ₹8,131 crore.

 It’s also paying out ₹45 per share, which includes ₹40 as special dividend.. On a yearly basis, the IT giant's revenue grew by 5.8% led by a boom in its digital vertical, which grew by 27.9%. In fact, digital revenue is one-third of TCS' total revenue this quarter. Other verticals that have contributed significantly to TCS' revenue include life science and healthcare, which grew at a yearly growth rate of 13.3% and communications and media, which grew by 11.8%. The company has launched the internal test to help employees to demonstrate their skills and achieve more — from higher salary packages to promotion from their existing job roles. This is applicable to the fresh hires as well, who want to upgrade their starting salaries. These tests can possibly double the slated fresher salary, if they get through the test. The company believes that this investment in skilled employees and bulk hiring will benefit the company in the long run. “With TNQT model for campus hiring, we can find more people who are hungry to prove a point and do well. If someone performs exceedingly well in the test, then we give them the option for a digital test which they can clear to aim for higher compensation,” Milind Lakkad, Global head of Human Resources <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/tcs-employees-can-sit-for-exams-to-be-eligible-for-higher-package-119101500045_1.html">told</a> Business Standard. While in case of experienced employees, the test will be open for employees with upto three years of experience. The tech giant has hired nearly 30,000 employees in the first six months of 2020 fiscal. “The revenue was lower than expected but hiring was on target. And, the utilization levels are healthy but can improve,” V Ramakrishnan, chief financial officer of TCS added. The verdict came as a sigh of relief to TCS as it relies heavily on the skills of <keyword id="729521" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Engineers">Indian engineers</keyword>. In September, TCS was sued by four former employees who alleged the company discriminated against them because they weren’t South Asians, first sidelining and then firing them. The claim was rejected by a federal jury in Oakland, California after a week-long trial on Wednesday, Mint <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/H9NEZCVLxeODbPHFMqr5SN/TCS-cleared-by-jury-of-claims-of-antiAmerican-bias.html">reported.</a> The four employees had alleged that nearly 80% of TCS’s workforce was from South-Asia -- which is much more than the general share of South Asians in the U.S. IT workforce. This was the first major Indian IT outsourcing firm in the US to go under a trial. In its defence, TCS reportedly argued that it found it difficult to retain local workers because of their unwillingness to migrate to other cities in the US, where TCS requires engineers, said the report.
