Now, it seems that they weren’t the only ones attacked. Other tech companies, including Tata Consultancy Services — an Indian tech giant and one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tcs-wipro-and-hcl-are-among-the-worlds-most-valued-it-brands/articleshow/67670849.cms">biggest IT firms in the world</a> — were also victims of hackers working for China’s Ministry of State Security, according to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-cyber-cloudhopper-companies-exc/exclusive-china-hacked-eight-major-computer-services-firms-in-years-long-attack-idUSKCN1TR1D4">Reuters</a>. That too, for years. It isn’t just TCS that was hacked. The service provider was used as a jumping off point to gain access to their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-post-upgraded-by-tcs-in-hopes-of-cutting-losses/articleshow/68989343.cms">client’s networks</a>. TCS did not respond when contacted for comments. Denial Mode Nobody wants to accept that the hack actually happened. The Chinese government denied any involvement. The companies claimed that no sensitive information was compromised, but a Reuters investigation shows otherwise. In order to hack into a service provider’s server, Operation Cloud Hopper used ‘spear phishing’ emails. This is where emails are sent to the company’s employees in hopes of tricking them into downloading malware or disclosing their passwords. Normally, that would involve impersonating an employee using the directories of credentials that the hackers had at their disposal, according to Reuters. Once this phase is successful, hackers start to map out the environment so that they can establish a foothold and make their way towards the real target, the system administrator. The administrator is important because it controls the company’s ‘jump servers’ — a bridge between a service provider and its client’s networks. After that, it’s just a matter of segregating sensitive information from the jumble of data on the victim’s network. Reuters reports that it wasn’t a random search either, as the hackers knew exactly where to look and find sensitive information. The commercially sensitive data is copied either directly from the client network or back through the service provider. Many companies like Hewlett Packard, didn’t even know that they had been hacked for the first couple of years. But once they did find the vulnerability, getting rid of it was a different story altogether. Though were ever able to pick off the hacker footholds one by one, the tricky infiltrators found new ways to come back stronger. The cycle continued for at least five years, according to Reuters. ‘Operation Cloud Hopper’ and its many attempts to hack into IT companies have mostly been kept under wraps at the behest of the corporate victims. But, the US government, after years of trying to contain the threat finally dubbed the hackers Advanced Persistent Threat 10 (APT10) in December 2018. Having been around for more than half a century, the company has rebranded itself to showcase its bold aspirations for the future. They already have more than 460,000 employees across the globe with many more waiting in line to join TCS’ growth story. “Our employees are our biggest brand ambassadors,” said Rajashree. She explained that they are the people who communicate directly with customers, which is why it’s very important that they understand the brand better than any promo, ad campaign or social post can put across. Even when discussing TCS’ new look, the company made it clear that it wanted to get millennials to come and share their opinion considering that the organisation’s average age is between 26 to 27 years old. “This was not like a boardroom activity. We had youngsters who came and shared their views about TCS and what they felt about the organisation and what they wanted to talk about,” Rajashree told Business Insider. And the main aim behind that was to make sure that it was an all-inclusive process. It’s not a rebranding — it’s an evolution Despite the timing of it all, the decision to rebrand TCS was not something that was triggered by the pandemic but already in the works before COVID-19 reached the borders of India. “Even before the pandemic struck, we wanted to refresh our positioning because we felt we wanted to have a branding messaging platform that is a reflection of who we are as an organisation today, which is very different from what we were a decade ago,” said Rajashree. TCS wants to be clear about the fact that it’s not moving away from its promise of offering clients certainty but that it’s evolving to showcase how the brand goes hand-in-hand with its clients to work towards a shared purpose. Simply put, TCS is still offering what it always did — just a little more now, because it can. Moreover, technology is at the centre of it. Across the industry, the pandemic has been a lesson in how company transformations going forward are going to be centred on technology. For a company like TCS, it’s an opportunity to shine. “We're not becoming somebody else. We're just finding the right messaging statement to position TCS much more strongly,” said Rajashree, clarifying the thought process behind the company’s new tagline is growth. The Indian MNC has even raised its full-year guidance to 9% to 10%. Valuation premium that TCS had gained over Infosys through the early part of 2019 has been nearly been erased, according to Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities. Infosys expects bottom line growth from its digital sector where it feels it will be able to capture a higher premium from its clients. "Digital pricing is a new area we are looking at — how we price digital service and command a premium from our clients," said CFO of Infosys, Nilanjan Roy, during the earnings call. "Our digital margins are higher than our core business, that's something we already know. I think the way we repurpose our digital talent and looking at the scarcity, we think there's an opportunity of how to price this scarce talent — depending on skills, experience, what sort of clients they work with," he added. TCS' digital business, on the other hand, has slowed down from being on track to cross 40% last quarter to a mere 28% at the end of September 2019. "We downgrade TCS to neutral and strike it off our list of conviction picks following 4% EPS (earnings per share) cut and a weak growth trajectory," according to analysts at HDFC Securities Institutional Research. Here’s how Infosys and TCS earnings performance in Q2 2020 stack up against each other

<ul><li>TCS and HCL Tech said that they have over a 100 <keyword id="17930214" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="genai" source="Orion">genAI</keyword> opportunities in the pipeline.</li><li>They also won a few projects, most of which are in the proof-of-concept or pilot stages.</li><li>Tech companies said they built large-scale genAI capabilities, and are ready to take on projects. </li></ul>Less than a year after ChatGPT was launched, Indian tech majors have started bagging generative AI projects. Even in times when demand is slow, discretionary spends are elusive, the new-age technology is bringing work as well as excitement into the IT outsourcing market. Although the size of the deals is small at the moment, genAI has ‘captured the imagination’ of clients, say top executives of Indian IT companies. TCS and HCL Tech said that most of their <keyword id="19151325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="genai-projects" source="Orion">genAI projects</keyword> are proof-of-concept or pilot stages. “Deal sizes are small and are mostly under $1 million where clients are trying them out. But there is potential to convert a part of our Jaguar Land Rover with AI and ML capabilities,” said N Ganapathy Subramaniam, COO of TCS at the company’s Q2 earnings press conference. HCL Tech’s MD C Vijayakumar too shared that most of the genAI deals they are bagging are either half a million or sub-$1 million deals. But they are currently working on a hundred such opportunities. “We have been selected as a partner by this very large software major for their product testing and sustenance efforts. We are providing GenAI on a private language model to improve resolution rate and speed efficiency,” said Vijayakumar. Infosys CEO Salil Parekh also shared that they are working on some proprietary large language models (LLMs). “AI is a part of almost every deal we do. And, GenAI is getting there. As it expands and more and larger enterprises get into it, it will be very exciting,” he added. A catalog of AI opportunities A few months back, all tech majors announced big moves in the generative AI space. Wipro announced that it will spend as much as $1 billion over three years to build capabilities. TCS, HCL Tech partnered with software major NVIDIA to skill their employees. As of September end, TCS said that they have 100,000-strong GenAI-ready workforce. They said they also have as many as 250 Gen AI opportunities in the pipeline. “When we started generative AI, they were all about knowledge discovery. As clients understand more, the genAI is getting more complicated. We are now working for a co-pilot for a financial advisor on what advice to give clients, help underwriting policies,” explaining K Krithivasan, CEO of TCS. TCS said that it has identified opportunities across various verticals, identified use cases and cataloged them per vertical. With that it says that it’s planning to go and engage with clients and have conversations on the same. “With this, we can have conversations with our clients – be in CRM or payments space and wealth advisory and other use cases,” explained Ganapathy. HCL Tech too is working on use cases related to banking and financial sector. “We signed a generative AI deal with a to improve their risk and compliance efforts – which is a very big effort in financial services. There are a lot of transactions happening on this front, and we have discussed how we can help,” said Vijayakumar. The buzz for cost optimization and automation deals has gone up in the last few months. Clients are looking to ramp down their expenses and intend to use tech to help with their overall cost reduction efforts. As automation gains ground, AI and ML will find more use cases – and most tech companies are confident that a little of it can spill into the new and emerging area of GenAI as well.

Beyond just chats: Indian tech majors start bagging deals in GenAI space

Bengaluru, June 18 (IANS) Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and IBM on Thursday announced to expand their global alliance with establishing an IBM Enterprise Cloud Architecture Unit to help customers on their digital transformation journey. The IBM Enterprise Cloud Architecture Unit would include technical professionals from both companies. TCS and IBM plan to co-develop solutions designed to help clients migrate workloads across applications, analytics, data estate and platforms, using IBM Cloud Paks, enterprise-ready containerised software solutions running on Red Hat OpenShift, the companies said in a statement. "We are investing in our alliance with IBM to co-create accelerators and other assets to further enhance the speed to market of our customers' modernization initiatives and drive their transformation to become cognitive-ready enterprises leveraging the new IBM public cloud ecosystem," explained Raman Venkatraman, Global Head, HiTech &amp; Professional Services Industry Unit, TCS. The new IBM Enterprise Cloud Architecture Unit is in addition to the existing IBM Digital Experience Centre that helps clients address complex business problems across industries. This is after they added 12,356 employees during the first quarter of the year, which is the highest ever addition in the last five years. They had given out 30,000 joining letters to freshers and 40% of them have come onboard already. This hiring plan comes on the back of strong growth in revenues at 10% in the first quarter ending June 2019. Its profits too grew by 10.8% to ₹8,131 crore as compared to ₹7,340 crore in the first quarter last year. The company also said that its attrition is at 11.5%. “TCS account teams are better placed to retain the contextual knowledge gained over time, and use that to build differentiated solutions tailored to each customer’s unique requirements,” said Milind Lakkad, Global Head, Human Resources in a press release. Digital Transformations TCS also said that more of its customers are undertaking digital transformation projects, swelling its orderbook. “We have had a steady start to the new fiscal year. We see customers continuing to spend on their growth and transformation initiatives, and that is showing in our strong order book and deal pipeline this quarter,” said Rajesh Gopinathan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of TCS. During the quarter, the company gained two large financial sector clients during the quarter. “We are confident of the future as we embrace deeply the Machine First philosophy in delivering experiential and modern solutions to our clients,” said N Ganapathy Subramaniam, Chief Operating Officer &amp; Executive Director. To be able to deliver these services, TCS has also trained over 315,000 employees in new digital technologies.

“TCS is one of the rare businesses that has sustained the industry AA+, the sector’s second highest rating, for three years in a row,” he said. 
Going forward with a goal to push the employees and the clients to re-imagine their business operations in today’s digital economy, TCS' brand value grew 271 per cent in five years globally, from USD 2.3 billion in 2010 to USD 8.7 billion in 2015, marking the fastest growth across the IT Services industry during the period.
