<keyword id="6448574" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="n-r-narayana-murthy">N R Narayana Murthy</keyword>, the co-founder of software giant <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> who chairs a Sebi panel on alternate investment policy advisory, on Tuesday pitched for pension funds and banks to invest money in Indian startups. Speaking at the annual Tiecon event, Murthy said a bulk of the money which gets invested as risk capital in the upcoming companies is from abroad and there is a need for domestic money to play an important role in this. At the same event, Murthy's former colleague at Infosys T V <keyword id="6491998" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mohandas-pai">Mohandas Pai</keyword>, who is now associated with Ispirit, an advocacy group for startups, said only a tenth of the USD 60 billion invested into Indian startups since 2014 has come from domestic investors. Pai warned that "we risk the prospect of turning into a digital colony" by 2025, seeking to draw parallels with imperialism.
 He said there will be 1 lakh startups in India with a collective valuation of over USD 500 billion by 2025. There will be at least 100 unicorns among them and over 65 of them will be majorly owned by foreign investors.
 "This is one of the most important issues that we have been discussing (at the Sebi panel). That is, what are the policy changes that are required to make sure that there is more of Indian and domestic money coming into the startup sector because today it is by and large from abroad," Murthy said.
 "To do that, pension funds must be allowed, corporations must be allowed, banks must be allowed," he added.
 Pai sounded more disappointed with Indian billionaires who are willing to invest in real estate and even bank deposits, but have a tendency to overlook the startup sector.
 In an apparent reference to the spate of frauds, Pai said the billionaires also tend to pass the risk on money invested to banks.
 He said the biggest letdown has been from financiers in Mumbai, and asked startup entrepreneurs to educate such professionals on the need of the hour. 
 Pai said why Indian pension funds or insurance companies cannot invest, questioning how companies in the same sector from abroad are coming in and taking interests here.
 Meanwhile, Murthy also clarified on a recent controversy over cutting short his speech at an event where he shared stage with American e-commerce giant Amazon's chief executive <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword>. He said Bezos had come on time to the venue, but the "indisciplined" crowd at the venue in New Delhi mobbed the entry gates which resulted in the delayed start for the event.
 Bezos was very understanding and smiled at the act of cutting short the speech, Murthy said, adding that this is so because the visiting honcho is himself a disciplinarian. India's tech icon Narayana Murthy says India may become a 'digital colony' if startups have to rely on foreign funds

 "Capital allocation is very important. Institutional investors should raise those questions. Infosys had liquid assets, including cash and cash equivalents and investments worth Rs 35,697 crore (about $5.25 billion) on its books at the end of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/infosys-employees-in-stresspromotions-and-increments-may-take-a-hit/articleshow/57095393.cms">December 2016</a>. 
 
He asserted that founders, who hold 13% stake in the Bengaluru-based company, had raised these questions like any other investor would. 
 "The founders are investors like anybody else. They hold 13 per cent stake. They have every right to question the <keyword id="6364382" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Board">Board</keyword>... Since the largest shareholder has sought clarification, they must also seek detailed clarification," he said. 
 
Pai, along with former colleague <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/infosys-employees-in-stresspromotions-and-increments-may-take-a-hit/articleshow/57095393.cms">V Balakrishnan</a>, had sought a USD 1.8 billion buyback in 2014 just as CEO <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword> was taking over. 
 
"We had raised the issue. We hope that other institutional investors will also raise their voice because the institutional investors have an obligation to protect their investment," he said. 
 
Pai explained that shareholders all over the world ask questions about capital allocation when growth slows down for listed companies, that have too much cash on books. 
 
"All over the world, for listed companies when growth slows down and there is too much cash, shareholders will ask what are they doing with the cash...about capital allocations. Most Boards around the world will respond with a buyback to show confidence in the company and stabilise the stock price," he said. 
 
Pai expressed hope that institutional investors who have a "fiduciary responsibility" to their unit holders, will also ask the same questions, as has been in the case of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/infosys-employees-in-stresspromotions-and-increments-may-take-a-hit/articleshow/57095393.cms">Cognizant</a>. 
 Last week, <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword>'s Board approved a plan to return USD 3.4 billion to shareholders over the next two years through share buybacks and dividend, following investor activism. 
 
"Why can't Infosys do something like Cognizant has done. That is very important for shareholders. I hope they ask him that at a time when growth is slowing down," he said. 
 
He said that while reports of the rift would not impact the company's performance but there is "some reputational damage because of this" and pointed out that the board "has to remedy this situation". 
 Over the last few days, Infosys has come under fire from founders like N R <keyword id="6355623" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narayana-Murthy">Narayana Murthy</keyword> who have publicly raised concerns on alleged corporate governance lapses at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/infosys-employees-in-stresspromotions-and-increments-may-take-a-hit/articleshow/57095393.cms">Infosys.</a> 
 
Infosys, however, has denied the allegations and said that its board is fully aligned with the strategic <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/infosys-employees-in-stresspromotions-and-increments-may-take-a-hit/articleshow/57095393.cms">direction of Sikka </a>and is very "appreciative of the initiatives taken by him in pursuance of this transformation".

Infosys should clarify capital allocation policy: Mohandas Pai tells investors

Industry veteran <keyword id="102497" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="T-V-Mohandas-Pai">T V Mohandas Pai</keyword> feels that due to <keyword id="24019" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="automation">automation</keyword>, about 20 crore middle class young people would have no jobs or fewer jobs by 2025. 
 "By 2025 there will be 200 million young people in the age group of 21-41 with no jobs or less jobs and nobody knows what to do with these people. Government policy does not know what to do as they don't have proper data. We are going to have demographic nightmare,” Pai, who is the chairman of <keyword id="852747" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manipal-Global-Education-Services">Manipal Global Education Services</keyword>, told ET. 
 
Nearly 52% of people are employed in agriculture as compared to 62% 10 years earlier and number of population which depends on services and industries is growing at 10%. 
 
"Disparity between people in agriculture and in service industry is widening and that is getting social attention all across India which has led to various agitation across states," Pai told ET. 
 
He said that more and more companies are relying on automation and artificial intelligence in machine and this will lead to loss in jobs. 
 
"Rule based jobs will get eliminated. Much of middle class people are involved in rule based jobs. Rule based jobs can be made by algorithms. Machines are still not creative. People who are creative will remain," Pai said. 
 
He also feels that in sectors like banking too, jobs are shrinking because of automation of payment system with the help of ATMs, digital payments. 
 
"Bank branches and employment are now shrinking in America. In India in last 15 years, banks have growth 10-15 times in assets and liabilities but employment has grown 5 per cent. In India very soon there will be robo finance which will search all portals and give you bank loan quote in half an hour," Pai told ET.

"My advice to all the people in colleges: please do M Tech and specialise, and learn <keyword id="1574956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="coding">coding</keyword> on your own by taking extra classes, because in future most companies will hire you based on your coding knowledge. They are not going to catch you raw and give you training for six months and pay for it. Why should they waste their time? They will test you on your coding skills and if you know very good coding, they will hire you," Pai told PTI. When asked about salary of freshers not growing in the <keyword id="6363148" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-Technology">Information Technology</keyword> (IT) industry in the past two decades, Pai termed it as a "great tragedy". This is because the whole industry is not growing at a fast pace, he said. Global spending in IT is projected to grow only two per cent this year, a figure which was 3-4 per cent earlier. "That is also having an impact," he said. IT industry is expected to hire 1.5 lakh to 1.6 lakh people this year, he said.

Billionaire businessman says young Indians should work 70 hours a week

New Delhi, Ed-tech titan <keyword id="3320944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Byjus" source="Orion">Byjus</keyword> is looking to sell its overseas ventures Epic and Great Learning to pay back its entire USD 1.2 billion (Rs 9,956 crore) loan to lenders, a source familiar with the matter said. The ed-tech decacorn has been in discussions with the lenders and has made a proposal to clear its Term B loan, the source said. Byju's hopes to garner between USD 800 million to USD 1 billion from the sale of Epic, the US-based kids learning firm, and Great Learning - the upskilling platform. The firm is also working on raising fresh capital from equity sales, and is working with bankers for the sale of the aforementioned key assets to strategic investors -- which has also garnered interest, the source said. An email sent to the ed-tech platform for comments remained unanswered. India's most-valued startup is hoping to repay the entire USD 1.2 billion term loan B (TLB) in under six months. Of this, it is proposing to repay USD 300 million in the next three months. Lenders have not yet responded to the proposal. Byju's in November 2021 raised USD 1.2 billion in debt through a term loan facility (TLB) from a group of overseas investors. A TLB is a type of senior secured syndicated credit facility that is issued by global institutional investors. Typically, the proceeds from a TLB are used to either refinance an existing debt or to make overseas acquisitions in order to enhance a company's offerings. Byju's had acquired Aakash USD 950 million in 2021. In July this year, the steering committee of ad hoc term loan lenders is reported to have agreed to amend the USD 1.2 billion term loan. The development comes after the company formed an advisory council with ex-Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai and Bharatpe Chairman and former SBI chief Rajnish Kumar after the exit of investors G V Ravishankar of Sequoia Capital (now Peak XV Partners), Vivian Wu of Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and Russell Dreisenstock of Prosus. Byjus had acquired Epic in a USD 500 million cash-and-stock deal in May 2022.

Byjus proposes sale of overseas units to repay $ 1.2 billion loan

New Delhi, Feb 5 () With an aim to facilitate use of latest fintech innovations in capital markets, regulator Sebi is planning to allow live testing of new products, services and business models for selected customers by providing various relaxations and exemptions. Initially, all Sebi-registered entities will be eligible to participate in such a 'regulatory sandbox' (a live testing environment), while fintech startups and other entities that are not regulated by Sebi may also be allowed at a later stage, but no exemptions would be granted from the existing investor protection framework, KYC and anti-money laundering rules, officials said. A proposal in this regard will be discussed by Sebi's board later this month, the officials added. The proposed 'regulatory sandbox' is intended to serve as a testing ground for new business models and technologies that benefit investors, Indian markets and the economy at large. Under this framework, the eligible entities would be granted certain facilities and flexibilities to experiment with fintech solutions in a live environment and on real customers, while ensuring that there are necessary safeguards for investor protection and risk mitigation. While the Indian capital market participants have been early adopters of technology, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is of the view that adoption and usage of emerging financial technology can be a key instrument to further develop and maintain an efficient, fair and transparent ecosystem. With this aim, Sebi had set up a committee on financial and regulatory technologies under the chairmanship of T V Mohandas Pai with expert members from the startup industry, fintech community and academicians. Based on their recommendations, Sebi had last year stipulated a framework for an industry-wide innovation sandbox, under which fintech startups and entities not regulated by Sebi have access to market related data, particularly trading and holding data in an anonymised form to help them test their innovations effectively before their introduction in a life environment. The committee had also recommended that Sebi may set up a regulatory sandbox to provide a live testing environment where new solutions can be deployed on a limited set of eligible customers for a specified period of time with certain relaxations. Sebi had subsequently floated a public consultation paper and after taking into account all the comments, it has now finalised a draft set of norms for allowing the regulatory sandbox. Under the proposed framework, all entities registered with Sebi would be eligible for testing within the regulatory sandbox on its own or use the services of a fintech firm. In subsequent phases depending on the response received, Sebi may consider permitting fintech startups, fintech firms and other entities that are not regulated by it. While Sebi grants registrations for a particular activity, it is considering cross-domain approach for this regulatory sandbox wherein a regulated entity can be permitted to test solutions for activities for which it might not be registered. For this, limited certificates of registration can be granted. The requirements for which no relaxation would be considered include confidentiality of customer information, fit and proper criteria particularly on honesty and integrity, handling of customers' funds and assets, rules for prevention of money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism, risk checks and Know Your Customer principles. The requirements that merit relaxations include networth, track record, registration fees, financial soundness and guidelines relating to technology risk management and outsourcing. Further, three out of the top 10 logistics players in India are today the new age (e- logistics) players. The new age logistics players are expected to deliver 2.5 billion D2C shipments by 2030. With the rise of <keyword id="436047" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ecommerce">eCommerce</keyword>, the need for specialized delivery service emerged, which led to the overall growth of the logistics segment. Emergence of this sector created 500,000 employment for gig workers in 2021 across captive and 3PL. The new-age 3PL logistics players have delivered 850 million shipments in 2020. New age logistics players have reduced the average time of delivery by 2/3rd in last 7 years, have covered nearly all the pincodes across India through enabled deep tech solutions to serve the different type of customer needs and requirements like same day delivery, hyperlocal, service enabled etc. E-logistics has been fulfilling the needs of the small city customers. Increasing coverage across India and faster delivery, enabled Tier-2+ cities to account for 50%+ shoppers to Indian eCommerce by the end of 2020. Shared mobility dips but personal mobility soars in demand According to RedSeer research, shared mobility saw a sharp decline due to the 2nd wave led lockdowns in the last two months. Although the autos segment recovered the fastest, the overall sector merely clocked 18 million rides, a drop from 113 million rides in January last year. However, while the shared mobility is dipping, personal mobility space is riding on a wave of strong traction seen since last year. While auto OEMs have responded with relevant offerings to democratize access to cars, tech platforms are also accelerating focus on digitizing the car ownership journey. Online used car transaction penetration to grow ~9x in the next ~10 years. With rise in digital content, advertisements see higher demand On the other hand, online content is seeing phenomenal growth leading to the overall growth of the digital ad industry as well. Digital content is emerging as the bellwether of demand creation for time spent. India, one of the largest economies, is surging ahead on content and smartphone usage. Monthly active users (MAU) have become democratised with increasing adoption of varied digital services and platforms. Consolidation would be the name of the game in e-commerce space next year, with small firms shutting shop, leaving fewer players in an environment of intense competition, former CFO of Infosys TV Mohandas Pai said. "In e-commerce, the biggest threat to Amazon and Flipkart will be Reliance Retail because <keyword id="6354504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> (<keyword id="6487" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries-ltd">Reliance Industries Ltd</keyword>'s telecom arm) is there all over India; they can easily connect to all the small, small retail stores and supply to them and improve their business dramatically," he said. "Reliance Retail will be the biggest challenger to Flipkart, Amazon next year," Pai said. "In retail, India will have three players -- Amazon, Flipkart and Reliance. Reliance has a wider reach, more physical stores, better distribution and more money to invest in India than the other two." V Balakrishnan, another former CFO of the Bengaluru- headquartered IT major, said telecom companies are in a sweet- spot because they are becoming like utility play but added that "they have to own the data". "Data and content become very important because telcos per se will become utilities. I think Reliance is making the right moves to own the data and own the content. That will give them strategic advantage in the market," Balakrishnan said. Meanwhile, speaking on the Indian start-up scene in general, Pai said funding has become discerning, except for large companies to which big firms are pouring in money. "There is keener competition for funding; investors are more cautious. But the investment is going on and start- ups are coming up," he added. Pai said 2018 will be a better year for start-ups as the country's economic growth would improve. "Next calendar year, start-ups will heat up again because many of them have done well and they are going to raise the next round of financing next year." "Next year will be good for start-ups. What is hot (in start-up space) is artificial intelligence, machine-learning, agri-tech and med-tech (life science and medical technologies)," he said. Balakrishnan said funding has become very selective in the start-up scene. "Earlier, all kinds of start-ups were funded. Now, unless you have a strong business idea, the funding environment has become challenging." "The start-up environment is good. They are all getting funded. Last year, some USD 8 billion funding in start-ups was received. B2B companies are the flavour of the market now. And a lot of funds have raised money.
