The NAS was connected to a gigabit network during the testing, making it a breeze to upload and download large files. The Synology DiskStation DS220+ is an entry-level NAS that comes with enough storage and power for basic users, especially at home. It was launched in September 2020 in India. Synology is a Taiwan-based company and was founded in 2000. It specialises in network-attached storage devices. I have been using the DS220+ for a few weeks now and here is my detailed review. Let’s understand NAS Before I dive into the review, let’s first understand what NAS is. As the name suggests, it is storage that is attached to the network – in this case, your local network or the internet. <div type="image" title="Network-attached storage" msid="81202628" hostid="261"></div> Connecting storage to a network allows you to remotely access it. So, for example, if your NAS is at your home and you are on a vacation, you can transfer your photos to the NAS remotely and not worry about running out of storage on your phone. This also ensures your photos and files are safe in case you lose your phone. Simply put, it is your private cloud storage, so you have complete control over it. As an added bonus, you only have to pay for it, once. However, as is the case with everything that is connected to the internet, using a NAS also carries its own risks. It is worth noting that you should set a strong password for the admin account during the setup. There are additional options in the interface to further strengthen the security, but the defaults work fine with Synology. Synology DiskStation DS220+ – price and features The Synology DiskStation DS220+ is available for purchase on Amazon.in and Flipkart at ₹32,500. While it can be done wirelessly via file sharing, remote backups are difficult. Synology NAS (network-attached storage) can be a good alternative, but the entry cost can be a little high. The upcoming DSM 7.0 update with Synology Photos is promising and comes with some basic features like grouping photos based on people, places and tags. The only drawback with this seems to be that your friends will also have to have the Google Photos app installed on their phone. Then again, the effort could be worth it if you want your meets, vacations and wedding albums to be complete. To be clear, Google Photos has had ‘Shared albums’ for a while now, and this feature doesn’t seem wildly different. It is a useful expansion of ‘Shared albums’, though. Google Photos will soon let you ask your friends for your photos directly, instead of badgering them on other apps

In this case, a hacker figured out how to control certain home networks to mine for a computer currency called Dogecoin, netting over half a billion dollars in a matter of months.
The hacker's exploits were <a href="http://secureworks.com/resources/blog/hacker-hijacks-synology-nas-boxes-for-dogecoin-mining-operation-reaping-half-million-dollars-in-two-months/">documented by Dell's security team</a>, which points out that the hacker used a competitor's computer storage product to do the dirty work. 
The Dell team traced the likely culprit to a German-speaking person who goes by the code-name of "Folio" on GitHub. (GitHub is a cloud service where developers post and share their software projects.).
Folio used a security flaw in a computer storage product called Synology, Dell says. Synology's computer storage product is easy to set up, so it has become popular with people who store a lot of songs, movies, and other multimedia files on their home networks.
In 2013, a security researcher discovered a flaw with the Synology product that let a hacker find, and ultimately control, these computer storage devices by searching for them on Google. 
The company fixed the vulnerably and released a patch. But between the time the researcher told the world about the flaw and the company patched it, the hacker named Folio went to work.
Folio discovered vulnerable computer storage boxes and put them to work to "mine" for Dogecoin. 
Dogecoin is a computer currency like Bitcoin and is created by "mining," which involves getting computers to answer a series of cryptographic questions to unlocks new coins. It takes a lot of computing power to answer these questions. People actually buy specially made computers to do it.
Or, if you are smart enough, you can string together a bunch of computers owned by other people and put them to work mining for you.
Folio was able to nab 500 million Dogecoin, equivalent to $620,496, finding most of the coins in January and February right before the patch was released, the researchers discovered.
The Dell team thinks this could be the most profitable illegal hacker mining operation of Dogecoin ever discovered.

How A Hacker Nabbed $600,000 In Two Months By Googling People's Home Networks

Numerous owners of the devices have recently reported experiencing WiFi network issues, and several <a href="https://www.myce.com/news/confirmed-issue-google-cast-causes-temporarily-wifi-drops-around-world-83428/">tech blogs</a> say Google is to blame. On Tuesday, a maker of networking products by the name of <a href="http://www.tp-link.com/us/faq-2050.html">TP-Link wrote in a blog post </a>that its routers have been affected by Google devices that use the Google "casting" feature. The company said a glitch caused a WiFi network to become temporarily unresponsive or disconnect from other devices that were connected to the network.WiFi routers from other companies, including Linksys, Asus, Netgear, and Synology are also reportedly affected.It's not clear whether the problem stems from a flaw in Google's hardware, or whether it's the result of a broader software issue.But the news represents the latest blow to Google's efforts to enter the hardware market, where it has limited experience and competes against longtime gadget makers like Samsung and Apple. When they did awake from their slumber, they flooded a WiFi router with huge amounts of data packets at a "very high speed," which would overwhelm certain routers and cause the disruptions. The amount of data that would be sent to a WiFi router depended on how long a Google casting device was in sleep mode. TP-Link has issued firmware updates for its affected WiFi routers, and a statement <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/16/google-chromecast-messing-wifi-connections/">from Google to Engadget</a> said "We're aware that a small number of users are having issues and our team is working quickly to share a solution."One of the ways to prevent WiFi network issues is to disable the casting feature in your Google casting devices. Of course, if the product is a Chromecast, that means you're effectively making the product useless. Business Insider has contacted Google for comment, as well as a clarification of which devices can become affected, but the company hasn't yet replied. There are several devices that support Google's casting feature, like smartphones, tablets, media streamers, and smart TVs. It's unclear if its specifically Google's own casting hardware causing the disruptions, or if it's Google's casting software feature found in several devices, too. Computerworld's Gregg Keizer <a href="http://www.arnnet.com.au/article/547802/hacker_mines_620k_cryptocurrency_under_victims_noses/">reports</a> the hacker targeted systems from Taiwan-based Synology, installing software that over a series of months netted him hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of the digital currency.
"This wasn't unique, we've seen other malware install [cryptocurrency] miners, but we haven't seen anything this big before," Pat Litke, a researcher at Dell SecureWorks' Counter Threat Unit (CTU) told Keizer. "That was mostly due to the infection vector. He could just walk in the door."
Dogecoin prices have plummeted nearly 80% to $0.0004 from $0.002 in February.
