Officials in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-suspended-from-practicing-law-new-york-state-2021-6">New York</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-suspended-from-practicing-law-in-washington-dc-2021-7">Washington, DC</a>, have suspended his law license. He remains under <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/04/28/1095196835/rudy-giuliani-fbi-raid-investigation">federal criminal probe</a> and faces <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/10/dc-bar-launches-ethics-charges-against-rudy-giuliani-00038977">ethics charges</a> in the nation's capital. The US House's <keyword id="11897870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="january-6" source="Orion">January 6</keyword> select committee <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/giuliani-interrogated-for-9-hours-by-committee-investigating-jan-6-2022-5">has</a> <a href="https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2022/06/21/voicemails-trump-intimidation-state-officials-2020-january-6-hearings-vpx.cnn/video/playlists/the-january-6-hearings/">cast</a> him as an "apparently <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/06/13/1104614467/jan-6-jason-miller-ivanka-trump-guiliani">inebriated</a>" knave peddling election lies.</p><p>But as prominent colleges and universities have stripped Giuliani of honorary doctorates they awarded him amid his service as a US attorney or mayor of New York City, at least five others have so far refused to rescind his honorary degrees, according to interviews and documents reviewed by Insider.</p><p>The hold-out schools include St. John Fisher College and <keyword id="12086831" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="syracuse-university" source="Orion">Syracuse University</keyword> in New York, Loyola University Maryland, The Citadel in South Carolina, and Georgetown University in Washington, DC.</p><p>Some students and faculty there say they're livid that their schools are still extolling a man who on January 6 told Trump supporters to stage a "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-called-on-trump-supporters-for-trial-by-combat-2021-1">trial by combat</a>" in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-evacuated-trump-supporters-protesters-electoral-vote-count-pence-2021-1">minutes before they marched</a> to the US Capitol and stormed it.</p><p>St. John Fisher College, Loyola University Maryland, and Georgetown University are Catholic institutions. Sydney Brooke, a third-year political science student at Loyola University Maryland, said she believes Giuliani represents nothing for which a Jesuit institution is supposed to stand. </p><p>"We pride ourselves in the process of discernment, a critical Jesuit value," Brooke, president of Loyola's pre-law society, told Insider. "It is difficult to look at an institution that is supposed to be justice oriented and truth seeking to be ok with Giuliani holding this honorary degree from our university. And I certainly think that it would be a missed opportunity if Loyola continues to fail to reassess this honorary degree."</p><p>James Bowers, a St. John Fisher College legal studies professor who in 2015 introduced Giuliani before he received an honorary doctorate in 2015, said Trump's one-time personal lawyer "clearly no longer represents the values that the Board of Trustees and our president professes that they believe in.</p><p>"The board cannot in good faith claim that it teaches goodness, discipline and values when it maintains an award to an individual who has basically backed an insurrection against American democracy," Bowers said.</p><p>During the 1990s and early 2000s, Rudy Giuliani was widely regarded as a strong leader, and then, a national hero. From the smoke and rubble of the September 11 attacks, he emerged as "America's Mayor." </p><p>St. John Fisher College's board of trustees <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-new-york-college-honorary-degree-votes-2021-3">formally decided last March</a> to allow Giuliani to keep his honorary degree, which it awarded for his leadership during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. </p><p>Said Bowers: "It is the epitome of academic cowardice."</p><p>The Cardinal Courier, St. John Fisher's student-led newspaper, <a href="https://projects.sjfc.edu/cardinalcourier/2021/03/02/fisher-fails-to-make-decision-regarding-giuliani-so-alumni-pen-letter/">reported</a> last March that a letter, signed by 15 prior class and Student Government Association (SGA) presidents, was submitted to the Board of Trustees voicing strong support for rescinding the honorary degree awarded to Giuliani. </p><p>Alumnus Joseph Smith, who spearheaded the letter, told Insider that they resent the letter to the chair and vice-chair of the board in February with additional signatures as well as a petition signed by close to 500 alumni. On March 18, they received a response from Gerard Rooney, president of the college, that stated, "after consultation with board leadership, the Board of Trustees is not planning to revisit this matter at this time." </p><p>Many alumni say they will no longer financially support the college if it continues to have a relationship with Giuliani, Smith said. </p><p>"Our support as alumni reflects our beliefs in the college's mission and we expect the college to demonstrate the same conviction when it comes to determining who should retain an award as distinguished as an honorary degree," said Smith, a practicing lawyer in Washington, DC.</p><p>Officials at St. John Fisher College and Loyola University Maryland, as well as The Citadel, did not respond to Insider's requests for comment. Officials at Georgetown University confirmed Monday that Giuliani received an honorary degree but offered no comment on whether the school has considered rescinding it.</p><div type="image" title="Rudy Giuliani receives honorary degree at Georgetown University." height="1896" width="2544" msid="92521389" hostid="261"></div><p>Giuliani, who himself <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna22915310">ran for president</a> in 2008, also did not respond to Insider's requests. But in a recent virtual press conference, he in part blamed his troubles on Democrats. </p><p>"Part of the problem why the Republican Party is always in trouble is because they lie about us," he said.</p><p>During US House's January 6 hearings in June, it wasn't a Democrat — but rather former Trump senior campaign manager Jason Miller — who testified that Giuliani was intoxicated while giving advice to Trump on election night. </p><p>Giuliani insisted that the president should declare victory, Miller testified, adding that Giuliani <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/06/13/1104614467/jan-6-jason-miller-ivanka-trump-guiliani">urged</a> Trump to say, "We won. They're stealing it from us."</p><p>And the former New York mayor continues <a href="https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/rudy-giuliani-addresses-nyc-supermarket-slap/3750933/">making</a> <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/06/27/rudy-giulianis-alleged-attacker-has-charged-downgraded/">headlines</a> for all the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-account-of-supermarket-assault-differs-from-video-footage-2022-6">wrong reasons</a>: He recently was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-attacked-by-supermarket-worker-while-campaigning-for-son-2022-6">slapped on the back</a> by a supermarket worker — Giuliani <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/06/27/giuliani-slap-grocery-store-staten-island/">said</a> it felt like "somebody shot me" — while campaigning for his son Andrew Giuliani, who is running as a Republican candidate for governor of New York. </p><h2><strong>Some schools cut ties with Rudy</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/news/2021/01/11/donald-trump-attorney-rudy-giuliani-could-lose-middlebury-college-honorary-degree/6622202002/">Middlebury College</a> in Vermont and <a href="https://drexel.edu/president/messages/message/2021/August/drexel-university-rescinds-honorary-degree-awarded-rudy-giuliani/">Drexel University</a> in Pennsylvania have taken a decidedly different route: they revoked Giuliani's degrees last year. </p><p>"The totality of Mr. Giuliani's recent actions, which have led to the suspension of his license to practice law, include repeated unfounded claims of widespread election fraud, have significantly contributed to undermining the public's faith in our democratic institutions and in the integrity of our judicial system, and stand in clear opposition to Drexel's values," Drexel University said in a statement at the time.</p><p>The University of Rhode Island <a href="https://www.providencejournal.com/story/news/education/2022/01/21/michael-flynn-rudy-giuliani-honorary-degrees-revoked-university-rhode-island/6607966001/">took away</a> Giuliani's honorary degree this January.</p><p>Giuliani no longer represents the "highest level of our values and standards that were evident when we first bestowed the degree," school President Marc Parlange <a href="https://www.uri.edu/news/2022/01/uri-board-of-trustees-votes-unanimously-to-revoke-honorary-degrees-to-retired-lt-gen-michael-flynn-and-former-new-york-city-mayor-rudolph-giuliani/">said</a> earlier this year.</p><p>Syracuse University could be close to joining them: The Daily Orange, Syracuse University's independent student <keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">news</keyword> organization, <a href="https://dailyorange.com/2022/04/university-senate-calls-rescind-rudy-giuliani-degree-proposes-fall-break/">reported</a> in April that the University Senate passed a resolution calling for the Board of Trustees to rescind Giuliani's degree. </p><p>"The University is reviewing the resolution recently passed by the University Senate to rescind Rudy Giuliani's honorary degree," Sarah Scalese, senior associate vice president for communications, told Insider via email.</p><p>Student Association President David Bruen expressed frustration at the university's lack of a clear response to students' continued pleas to rescind Giuliani's degree, especially after Middlebury College and Drexel University decided to rescind theirs. </p><p>"This is not someone that Syracuse University should associate with in the slightest, and we should, in fact, set the precedent that these are not our values and we can repudiate Mr. Giuliani's actions," Bruen said.</p><p>Students across the campuses that awarded Giuliani degrees have been vocal about the need to revoke them. Hundreds of students at St. John Fisher College petitioned the college and various student organizations at Syracuse University pushed for Giuliani's honorary law degree to be rescinded.  </p><p>But not everyone at Syracuse University supports that path, including Gregory Germain, a professor of law.</p><p>"This whole thing strikes me as political correctness run amok," Germain told Insider.</p><p>To Germain, revoking Giuliani's honorary degree, conferred in 1989, signifies the university going down the path of supporting one political view over another and becoming a doctrinal system instead of one that promotes open debate. </p><p>While the university might be wise to not grant Giuliani an honorary degree today, it makes little sense to strip him of an honor the university bestowed more than three decades ago, long before Giuliani's involvement with Trump, he said. Similarly, Georgetown University <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/2002/05/20/williams-giuliani-send-off-students/312c9d81-e52b-479d-bf90-3bfa8c398f37/">awarded Giuliani</a> an honorary degree in 2002, less than a year after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and two decades removed from today.</p><p>"I don't think ultimately people are going to want to send their kids to expensive schools where they're being indoctrinated rather than taught to think independently," Germain said. "If you have independent thoughts and you don't agree with the prevailing view, you're canceled."</p><p>Taking away his honorary degree is synonymous to denying the good he did for New York, says Augustus LeRoux, president of Syracuse's College Republicans. </p><p>"I don't think suddenly being of the wrong political party undoes any accomplishments or public service Rudy Giuliani has done in the past," LeRoux told Insider. </p><p>As for Bowers, he says he hopes the schools that still honor Giuliani will move swiftly to reconsider, even if his own school, St. John Fisher College, formally decided against doing so.</p><p>Because Giuliani effectively supported a coup, he has become a true threat to democracy and he shouldn't be honored, even with degrees that don't hold the same academic weight as traditional ones, Bowers said. </p><p>"Rudy Giuliani crossed the line from simply having a different opinion to where his actions are not warranting the continuation of the award," Bowers said.</p>

Five colleges won't cancel Rudy Giuliani's honorary degrees. Some students, faculty, and alumni are livid.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Attorneys for Vanessa Bryant offered a somber closing argument on Tuesday.</li><li>They said that first responders were 'cruel' when they took and shared graphic crash site photos of Kobe Bryant.</li></ul><p>An attorney for Vanessa Bryant made one last impassioned plea to jurors on the day of her husband's birthday, wrapping up a somber trial dealing with graphic photos of his dead body that were taken and shared by members of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputies and Los Angeles County Fire Department.</p><p>"Forty years ago today in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kobe Bryant was born," Bryant attorney Craig Lavoie told jurors. "Today is his birthday, and it's an honor to be asking for justice for him, and his daughter Gianna on his birthday."</p><p>Lavoie offered closing arguments for Bryant's side <a href="https://www.insider.com/live-kobe-bryant-helicopter-crash-photos-trial-vanessas-emotional-distress-2022-8#lakers-gm-rob-pelinka-described-visiting-the-kobe-bryant-helicopter-crash-site-with-vanessa-bryant">on the tenth day of her trial</a> against Los Angeles County first responders who took and shared graphic photos of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe, Gianna Bryant, Sarah and Payton Chester, and seven others. Bryant's attorney said that the first responders ultimately failed to protect the dignity and privacy of his client's loved ones' lives.</p><p>Kobe Bryant "counted on the living to do that, and they betrayed that trust," Lavoie said. In a later rebuttal, Bryant attorney Luis Li said that Bryant was "here today to expose the fire department and the sheriff's department."</p><p>On Wednesday, Bryant was dressed in a white suit, while her 19-year-old daughter Natalia sat in the courtroom next to US Women's National Team soccer player Sydney Leroux and Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and his wife Kristin.</p><h2>Jurors will have 6 things to consider on the verdict form</h2><p>Bryant and Chester <a href="https://www.insider.com/lakers-gm-rob-pelinka-describes-visiting-kobe-crash-site-vanessa-2022-8">sued the county</a> over allegations that LA sheriff's deputies and LA County Fire Department captains <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-sharing-photos-of-kobe-bryants-dead-body-at-bar-2022-8">took and shared graphic photos of the January 2020 helicopter crash</a> that killed nine people, including NBA star Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna. </p><p>Jurors will be tasked with evaluating whether Bryant and Chester's constitutional rights to the privacy of images of their loved ones were violated by LASD and LACFD as a result of the photos being taken and disseminated among staff members and in a few public settings.</p><p>According to the verdict form, if jurors agree, they will be asked to determine whether inadequate training and policies led to the incident, or <a href="https://www.insider.com/kobe-bryant-crash-sheriffs-deputy-no-regrets-over-handling-photos-2022-8">whether it was a common practice</a> or custom to take photos of human remains and deceased people within the agencies. If jurors agree with one or both of those options, then the verdict will land with Bryant and Chester.</p><p>The first two questions of the form will ask jurors to determine LASD's role in the dissemination, while another two will ask the same questions about policy and practice related to LACFD. </p><p>Bryant and Chester's attorneys will ask jurors to award the plaintiffs $2.5 million each in past emotional distress damages related to grief and anxiety. Chester's attorneys asked for $1 million in future annual damages for 30 years for Chester, and argued Vanessa Bryant should be owed up to $1 million a year for 40 years. It amounts to a total of up to $75 million. </p><h2>The jury will decide on public dissemination, destroyed evidence</h2><p>Lavoie said that Bryant has been "haunted" by the "life-shattering incident" and argued that the conduct of the staff who spread photos "shocks the conscience." </p><p>Along with the citizen complaints that identified Deputy Joey Cruz showing the photos to bartender Victor Gutierrez, or Luella Weireter's testimony that LACFD public information officer Tony Imbrenda showed graphic crash photos at a gala <a href="https://www.insider.com/luella-weireter-saw-la-officials-sharing-pics-kobe-bryant-crash-2022-8">"like a party trick,"</a> Lavoie argued that in several instances where LASD staff sent the photos to each other while off duty and on personal phones – <a href="https://www.insider.com/la-sheriffs-deputies-regret-over-sharing-kobe-bryant-crash-pics-2022-8">like while playing Call of Duty </a>– should be considered public spread.</p><p>Lavoie zeroed in on flaky testimonies from LASD and LACFD staff throughout the trial. The officials at times <a href="https://www.insider.com/vanessa-bryant-trial-highlights-sheriffs-department-cover-up-efforts-2022-8?inline-endstory-related-recommendations=">have contradicted</a> their own internal investigation interviews, depositions, and testimonies from their superiors. Attorneys for the County have maintained that the deletion order once graphic photos were discovered was effective and that on the day of the crash, scene photography was "essential" for first responders to do their jobs.</p><p>Bryant's attorney said that <a href="https://www.insider.com/kobe-bryant-trial-la-county-official-left-stand-3-times-2022-8">retired LACFD captain Brian Jordan</a> "had a chaperone take him around from body to body under false pretenses," referring to Deputy Doug Johnson, who took anywhere from 25 to over 100 photos, according to testimonies.</p><p>"Hiking down into a ravine to take photos of Gianna Bryant, a deceased child, can you imagine?" Lavoie said. "Imagine how Mrs. Bryant and Mr. Chester feel having put their faith in Brian Jordan's hands."</p><p>Attorneys for the plaintiffs used <a href="https://www.insider.com/sheriff-alex-villanueva-only-god-knows-kobe-crash-photos-gone-2022-8">quotes from Sheriff Alex Villanueva</a> from months after the crash, where he called the LASD site photo policy "deficient," and others where he said that taking illicit photos of human remains has been a problem for cops "since the invention of the Polaroid camera."</p><h2>No pictures</h2><p>In the County's closing arguments, lead attorney Mira Hashmall said that the "mistakes of a few personnel," did not amount to constitutional violations for Bryant and Chester.</p><p>"This is the pictures case, and there are no pictures," Mira Hashmall, the county's attorney, told jurors, referring to the LA County Sheriff's order <a href="https://www.insider.com/kobe-bryant-helicopter-crash-la-cop-concerned-photos-broke-law-2022-8?inline-endstory-related-recommendations=" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">to delete the graphic pictures of the crash</a> to prevent their spread.</p><p>Hashmall claimed that the only photos of the crash site that were publicly disseminated were the live shots that news helicopter cameras were delivering on the day of the crash. </p><p>She told the court that in over 100 years of the LASD and LACFD's existence, there have been no similar incidents, asking jurors to consider if "one incident in 100 years can be considered widespread."</p><p>"A custom is the creamer you put in your coffee every day," Hashmall said. County attorneys suggested that some staff members including Deputy Joey Cruz and LACFD captain Tony Imbrenda violated county confidentiality policies, but not any constitutional rights.</p><p>"Imagine if first responders have to think about being sued when they send their boss site photos," Hashmall said. "Apparently, accountability is $75 million from public taxpayer-funded money."</p><h2>An ominous phone call midway through the trial</h2><p>Jerome Jackson, an attorney for Chester, said that first responders "kicked him while he was down."</p><p>"They did it cruelly, and then they lied about it," Jackson said, accusing the county of a "sloppy, dumb cover-up."</p><p>Jurors will be given an instruction to determine whether LA County first responders and their superiors deleted evidence in the aftermath of the crash, and attorneys for the plaintiffs argued that jurors should consider that several staff members wiped or replaced their phones after a March 2, 2020 notice to preserve evidence, and that Jordan's laptop was missing a hard drive when turned in to LACFD investigators.</p><p>Jackson said that as recently as last week, he received a voicemail from a woman purporting to have graphic crash site photos on a website that is selling them.</p><p>"It sent a chill up my spine," he said. </p><p>Lavoie left the screen black for the last part of his presentation as Bryant left the room, visibly affected by her attorney's retracing of key, traumatic events for her family.</p><p>"For the rest of their lives, Mrs. Bryant and Mr. Chester will face two things, " Lavoie told jurors. "Either the photos will surface, or they will live in fear for the rest of their lives about when that day will come."</p>

US Women's Soccer Team Hitched A Ride With Fans After Team Bus Broke Down

<p>Sources told TMZ that the ceremony took place right on the beach at sunset in front of the couple's closest family and friends.</p>
<p>Among those friends were fellow U.S. soccer players Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux.</p>
<p>From the looks of Morgan and Leroux's Instagrams, the friends turned the Hawaii wedding into a fun vacation.</p>

<p>The commercial, which is unapologetically over-the-top, begins with Neymar and his father talking on FaceTime, then bounces around the world to different Beats-wearing soccer stars preparing for matches, including Chicharito, Cesc Fabregas, Jozy Altidore, Luis Suarez, and Bacary Sagna, among many more.</p>
<p>It also features cameos from Lebron James, Serena Williams, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, and the 2010 World Cup oracle, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_the_Octopus">Paul the Octopus.</a></p>
<p>With just one week until the start of the World Cup, many major brands <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/adidas-world-cup-commercial-2014-5">have already </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/espns-one-time-zone-world-cup-ad-2014-5">released their own ads</a>. Beats By Dre just one-upped everyone else. </p>
