<ul><li>Indian foodtech unicorn <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> is reportedly scaling down its grocery and fresh produce deliveries. </li><li>However, the $3.6 billion startup said that it will continue to focus on meat, seafood, gourmet and its instant grocery delivery service — Instamart.</li><li>Even though Swiggy operates food delivery services in 500 cities, its grocery delivery service will now be restricted to 20 cities.</li></ul>Indian foodtech unicorn Swiggy is <a href="https://entrackr.com/2020/12/exclusive-swiggy-moves-away-from-grocery-and-fresh-produce-delivery/">reportedly</a> scaling down its grocery and fresh produce deliveries. “We expanded our services across the country during the lockdown as consumers turned to Swiggy not just for food but also other essentials. Given that movement restrictions have been eased, we are rolling back grocery delivery and focusing on offerings like <keyword id="9167642" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swiggy-Genie">Swiggy Genie</keyword> where consumers can shop from any store in the city including groceries &amp; essentials or pick-up and drop-off packages,” said a Swiggy spokesperson. However, not everything will be toned down. The $3.6 billion startup said that it will continue to focus on meat, seafood, petcare gourmet and its essential delivery service Instamart, which delivers products like groceries, fresh fruits &amp; vegetables, personal care items among other things. “With a delivery promise of 30 to 45 minutes, Instamart is rapidly becoming a favourite among consumers (in Bangalore and Gurgaon) while unlocking a new dimension of convenience retailing in India,” said the spokesperson. Even though Swiggy operates food delivery services in 500 cities, it has said that it will restrict grocery to about 20 cities. “Pre-COVID, 80% of Swiggy’s business was food delivery, and the remaining came from other segments. The company expects this ratio to change to 50-50 in the next 2 to 3 years, with increased contribution from grocery, cloud kitchen, etc,” said a Goldman Sachs report from November, 2020. The chicken biryani reaffirmed its place as India's favourite dish. For every veg biryani, there were six chicken biryani orders. Over 3 lakh new users made their Swiggy debut by ordering in a chicken biryani, according to the data from fifth edition of Swingy's annual 'StatEATstics' analysis. "While we delivered 5 times as many orders to 'Home' addresses compared to 'Work' addresses between January and March, that number rose to 9 times as many Home orders vs. Work orders in April and May," the report mentioned. Missing office cappuccinos and masala chais while working from home, lakhs of hardworking <keyword id="10475899" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy-users">Swiggy users</keyword> ordered varieties of tea and coffee. Swiggy also delivered over two lakh pani puri orders post-lockdown. The company launched 'Swiggy HealthHub' in August, a curation of <keyword id="9665312" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthy-food-items">healthy food items</keyword>. While users in the National Capital Region (NCR) ordered the <keyword id="10475898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthiest-meals">healthiest meals</keyword>, Bangaloreans showed a high resolve to get healthy. At 130%, the city saw the highest increase in healthy food orders on Swiggy HealthHub. People ate an average of 342 calories for dinner. Lunches ranged at under 350 calories, while breakfast, the day's most important meal, saw people consume an average of 427 calories. Swiggy Instamart, its instant grocery and essentials delivery service, delivered over 75,000 kgs of onion. "Our shortest delivery request came in from someone in Bengaluru and spanned a 600 metres to collect an empty water can from their home and exchange it for a full one at the store". "Meanwhile, our longest delivery spanned 39kms in Kolkata and involved the delivery of a SIM card," Swiggy informed. Biryani ordered more than once in every second while home-cooked food most ferried item on Swiggy Genie in 2020

Online <keyword id="5306302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery-platform" source="Orion">food delivery platform</keyword> <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> on Friday announced it has acquired Dineout, a dining out and restaurant tech platform, for an undisclosed sum. Reliable sources told IANS that the acquisition size could be around $200 million. Dineout, which serves millions across its network of 50,000 restaurants in 20 cities, will continue to operate as an independent app post the acquisition. "Times Internet and the founding team should be credited for the transformational impact they have brought about in the dining out experience through their products, technology, and vast selection of restaurant partners," said Sriharsha Majety, CEO, Swiggy. Dineout founders will join Swiggy once the acquisition is completed. "The acquisition will allow Swiggy to explore synergies and offer new experiences in a high-use category," Majety added. Founded in 2012 by Ankit Mehrotra, Nikhil Bakshi, Sahil Jain, and Vivek Kapoor, Dineout helps people discover the best restaurants, make table reservations, enjoy discounts and privileges across select restaurants. The acquisition will also help Swiggy's restaurant partners reach more customers and grow their business. "With Swiggy's deep understanding of the ecosystem and our shared passion for a superior consumer and restaurant experience, our joint forces will help provide a holistic platform in this industry," said Mehrotra, Co-founder and CEO, Dineout. The Bengaluru-based company will test the implementation of TVS Motors’ electric vehicles (EV) for its food delivery as well as other on-demand services like InstaMart, Genie. Notably, Swiggy currently has over two lakh delivery partners working with the platform. The commitment is to make deliveries spanning 800,000 kilometres per day through EVs by 2025, according to Mihir Rajesh Shah, vice president operations, at Swiggy. The partnership will help TVS Motors’ meet its target to expand the presence of its TVS iQube Electric across all major cities by March 2022. Several companies — including Amazon, Flipkart and Swiggy’s rival Zomato — have committed to adopt EVs for 100% of their delivery fleet by 2030. Zomato’s founder and chief executive Deepinder Goyal, in a blog post published in <a href="https://www.zomato.com/blog/a-sustainable-future">June 2021</a>, said that through 100% EV adoption will not be easy but it will be essential in the long run. He had also noted that limited battery range, lack of charging infrastructure, higher upfront cost and lack of trust in the new technology are some of the challenges that are emerging for faster adoption of electric vehicles. Swiggy will deliver stuff on TVS Motors’ electric scooters

Swiggy intends to use this funding to double down on its core business, make acquisitions and invest in its grocery delivery business Instamart. Interestingly, rival Zomato, too, aims to use the capital raised from its IPO to make acquisitions as well as formally enter the grocery delivery segment. It will raise an additional $1.3 billion through its public issue. Commenting on the latest fundraise, Swiggy’s chief executive and co-founder Sriharsha Majety said, “The scope of food delivery in India is massive and over the next few years, we will continue to invest aggressively into growing this category. Our biggest investments will be in our non-food businesses that have witnessed tremendous consumer love and growth in a short span, especially in the past 15 months of the pandemic.” A part of this funding will also be utilised to enhance Swiggy’s capabilities in technology and artificial intelligence (AI). According to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/ipos/fpos/zomato-plans-to-file-for-ipo-in-first-half-of-2021/articleshow/78041305.cms">reports</a>, Zomato CEO Goyal in an email to his employees said that the company is looking to list publicly in the first half of 2021. By September 2020, the company said its food delivery orders had reached pre-COVID levels and the transaction value per order was increasing. “With more premium restaurants, i.e. restaurants where a meal for two may cost ₹1500 and above, now opening up to online delivery, a larger number of affluent consumers are embracing online ordering. Overall spends on such premium restaurants have grown by over 25% over pre-COVID levels,” wrote <a href="https://www.zomato.com/blog/mid-covid-report-2">Goyal in </a>a blog. While this order value has been increasing, the company has been cutting costs. It laid off 1,300 employees in the beginning of the pandemic, announced permanent work from home and cut down real estate costs. All of this has helped the company’s unit economics. “While COVID-19 has impacted the size of our business, it has accelerated our journey to profitability,” wrote Goyal in a blog in July. Over the years, Swiggy has expanded to grocery (a segment Zomato plans to leave soon) with Swiggy Stores, hyperlocal delivery service called Swiggy genie, and also launched its own dairy service called Supr Daily. Zomato had recently announced its $1.1 billion initial public offering plan, in which it had mentioned that it has kept the door open for future investments. “We will from time to time continue to seek attractive inorganic opportunities that we believe will fit well with our strategic business objectives and growth strategies,” said the company in its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP). As per the ET report, Zomato is exploring a comeback in the grocery sector, through a subsidiary, instead of going all in by itself. And it makes sense, as the margins in the grocery sector are low. According to brokerage firm CLSA’s report, “Groceries in the country are distributed largely through Kirana or mom-and-pop brick -and-mortar stores, where overall supply chain margin varies from 14-20%, of which the distributor books 4-6% and the retailer makes 8-14%. Given the tight margins available, prospects for profitable operations for an aggregator are low.” However, the $5.4 billion company is not a new player in the grocery segment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zomato had announced that it would let users order groceries through its app. “Grocery delivery has always been on our long term radar since it fits into our vision of ‘better food for more people’. Given the current need of our customers, we quickly sprung into action to serve,” Zomato’s chief operating officer Mohit Sardana had said then. As per the CLSA report, between April to September 2020, Zomato delivered 1.1 million grocery orders, consisting of 7.8 million products. Zomato also runs a business-to-business subsidiary company called Hyperpure, through which it supplies ingredients like vegetables and fruits, poultry, groceries, meats, seafood, dairy, beverages, and eco-friendly packaging materials to restaurants. And one of the reasons behind investing in Grofers could be to secure a strong foothold for the Hyperpure business, which currently sees tough competition. “The Hyperpure business model rests on creating an entire supply ecosystem to restaurants. There are several large, well-funded startups trying to create the last mile supply ecosystem like Udaan, Instamart etc,” said a report by Ambit financial. Its rival Swiggy has already established itself in the grocery segment, as well as its hyperlocal delivery service Swiggy Genie. Zomato could also be taking a leaf out of its successful counterpart in Southeast Asia, Grab, which is also headed for a market debut.
