The film industry has been entertaining us for decades with heart-warming stories, but what really doesn’t work well with the Indian audience are the movies with religion-based scripts. They rub the Indian audience in a wrong way. Take for instance the recent case of ‘Mohalla Assi’, a film based on religious issues that hasn’t been released but is already facing the ire. And this is not happening for the first time when religious overtones of a film have created celluloid controversy. Here are five such flicks, which made headlines due to their sensitive contents and were tagged ‘outrageous’. 
		 

Mohalla Assi 
 
 
 Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, this Sunny Deol-starrer movie is in news due to its abusive language and portrayal of Lord <keyword id="33379" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shiva">Shiva</keyword> in poor light. Following a petition, a court has recently restrained the makers of the film from releasing on July 3 till further orders. The court has observed that it might “hurt religious sentiments of the people” and said it should not hit theatres till the alleged offensive scenes and dialogues are edited. The film is based in the locality of Assi Ghat in the holy city of Varanasi. It is, reportedly, based on 2004 Hindi novel 'Kashi Ka Assi' written by Kashinath Singh. The movie also stars Ravi Kishan, Sakshi Tanwar in lead roles.

 Many cases were registered against this <keyword id="6354633" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rajkumar-Hirani">Rajkumar Hirani</keyword> film ever since its first poster was unveiled that had a nude <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>, posing with a transistor. The movie, a satire on religious beliefs and superstitions, was released across India on December 19, 2014. Aamir Khan played an alien and unravels the ugly face of human greed. Hindutva groups took offence to certain scenes and dialogues while others criticized ‘PK’ that it “unnecessarily” mocked Hindu beliefs and rituals. Police lodged complaints against the film under Sections 153-A, 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, it did not affect the box office collection of ‘PK’, which has crossed Rs 650 crore mark. The film also stars <keyword id="6357860" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Anushka-Sharma">Anushka Sharma</keyword>, <keyword id="21678" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="sushant-singh">Sushant Singh</keyword> Rajput, Boman Irani, and <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword>. 
 
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela 
 
 
 This <keyword id="6358308" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanjay-leela-bhansali">Sanjay Leela Bhansali</keyword> film was mired in controversy from the time its title was announced. The original name of the movie was ‘Ram-Leela’, but was changed to ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, following a petition. According to the petitioner, actor <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword>, who played the role of Ram in the film, was a womanizer and his role was a character assassination of Lord <keyword id="52950" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rama">Rama</keyword>. A case was later filed against Bhansali, Ranveer Singh and <keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the people and promoting communal disharmony. However, the film was released on November 15, 2013 and collected over Rs 200 crore on the box office. 
 
Son of Sardaar 
 
 
 Directed by Ashwni Dhir, the film was tagged as objectionable by the Sikh community due to a Lord Shiva tattoo on actor <keyword id="4230" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ajay-Devgan">Ajay Devgan</keyword>’s chest and a couple of allegedly outrageous dialogues. He played the role of a Sikh protagonist in the movie. Being a producer, he assured the <keyword id="54270" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shiromani-Gurdwara-Parbandhak-Committee">Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee</keyword> (SGPC) that the objectionable elements would be removed before its release. The actor also promised that a print of the film would be sent to the SGPC before the release. The movie was released on November 13, 2012 and also stars <keyword id="62210" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sonakshi-Sinha">Sonakshi Sinha</keyword>, <keyword id="6371319" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Juhi-Chawla">Juhi Chawla</keyword> and Sanjay Dutt. 
 
OMG-Oh My God 
 
 This Akshay Kumar-starrer was a mix of satire, fable and fantasy that brings audience’s attention towards the commercialisation of religion. Although the movie insists on the existence of God, it was not like by Hindutva groups. The story was an adaptation of a successful Gujarati play, which also became a hit in Hindi and Marathi languages. Directed by Umesh Shukla, the movie was released on September 28, 2012. An FIR was later lodged against the director, producers and actors of the film for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the people. The movie also stars actors <keyword id="6357914" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paresh-Rawal">Paresh Rawal</keyword> and <keyword id="14672" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mithun-Chakraborty">Mithun Chakraborty</keyword>.

5 movies that made headlines for the wrong reasons, thanks to religious content

Director <keyword id="35863" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dibakar-Banerjee">Dibakar Banerjee</keyword>, who is ready for his next movie titled "<keyword id="1725719" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="DETECTIVE-BYOMKESH-BAKSHY">Detective Byomkesh Bakshy</keyword>!" hinted that there are chances that the movie might be made into a franchise, meaning that there can be more movies involving the fictional character. 
 
On being asked if he would want the movie, which is an adaptation of a fictional book character, to be turned into a franchise, he said, "We would love to (make it a franchise), but we are waiting for the first film to do well. This is because - fortunately or unfortunately - a film like this has not yet been made." 
 
Talking further, he said, "If the audiences' hunger and thirst for such films increases and our first Byomkesh story catches on, then our franchise is ready and we would love this franchise to go forward." 
 Created by the Bengali writer <keyword id="1641501" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saradindu-Bandyopadhyay">Saradindu Bandyopadhyay</keyword>, Byomkesh Bakshy is a fictional character, a young Bengali detective. Bandyopadhyay wrote as many as 32 stories involving the character from 1932 until his death in 1970, leaving one story, <keyword id="2760413" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bishupal-Bodh">Bishupal Bodh</keyword>, incomplete. 
 The movie, which has been produced by Yash Raj Films and Dibakar Banerjee productions, features actor <keyword id="6356062" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sushant-Singh-Rajput">Sushant Singh Rajput</keyword> in the title role and is slated to release on April 3.

"We have not found any suicide note at the spot. It seems to be suicide case. It is suspected that he hanged himself two days back. Efforts were on to get in touch with the family of the actor, who had been living alone since February, he said. Based on primary information, an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered, Fernandes said, adding that further investigations are underway. On July 27, Sharma posted his last words on Instagram with a poem on death and dreams. "I built my pyre and slept on it and with my fire it was lit. And all that was me I burned in it. I killed my dream to wake up from it. Now my dream is gone," he wrote on his page. After that, he posted some photographs but no written content. His bio on Instagram reads "Actor. Writer. Poet" and mostly has shots of beaches and videos of him driving to scenic places. Sharma's death comes at a time the entertainment industry is reeling from the shock of the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found hanging at his apartment in suburban Bandra on June 14. Rajput's death, which will now be investigated by the CBI, exposed many faultlines in the industry. "Depression is a lonely disease," Sharma had posted after Rajput's death. "Biopolar Disorder, Depression, and Schizophrenia etc. do you know or understand what that means or feels like? No you don't, unless you've been through it yourself. And anybody who hasn't, will never ever be able to understand what that feels like," he wrote on July 22. Bollywood star Sidharth Malhotra, who worked with Sharma in "Hasee toh Phasee", condoled the actor's death. Sharing a picture with Sharma from the film, Malhotra wrote, "Really sad and unfortunate #RIPSameerSharma." It seems Aamir is part of the company’s strategy at repositioning in a competitive retail marketplace. So do associations with celebrities work for brands? 
 Celebrities are most used often in the B to C markets, to aid marketing appeals directed at end consumers. The question is do celebrities make a difference? Also, are there limits to their influence on consumers? 
So here’s what they can do, and what they can’t. 
 
There are reasons why celebrities matter to brands and consumers. Much of that has to do with their ability to break through a cluttered noisy market place and connect to consumers. Here are the three ways they do it -

	<li> Entice Attention – Consumers of today live amidst an overload of marketing messages. That is, too many communiques from as many marketers vie for consumer attention. Over time however and through conscious and subconscious acts, consumers both block and ignore marketing stimuli. Now here’s where celebrities swing into action. Using equity that revolves around characteristics of credibility (Aamir Khan with his thinking man’s <keyword id="271" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="actor">actor</keyword> image), attractiveness (<keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> totally on her drop-dead gorgeous looks), or power (<keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword> by the sheer sense of respect he evokes), celebrities snare the senses and pluck consumer attention.</li>

	<li value="2"> Provoke Consideration – What celebrities also do once the attention is in, is to get consumers to contemplate on the content of the message. So an Aamir can prompt consumers to ‘internalize’ and ‘believe’ the message. A Deepika may provoke the viewer to ‘identify’ and therefore ‘associate’ with the brand, and the big Daddy of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>, Amitabh may be able to get the target group to ‘act’ via ‘compliance’ to whatever is being is suggested of consumers.</li>

	<li value="3"> Forge Inclination – In behavioural lingo, ‘consideration’ is in effect consumers learning about the celebrity-endorsed brands. Such celebrity associated ‘stimulus-response learning’ in turn results in attitudes being formed. Meaning consumers now begin to ‘like’ the brand in question. So a <keyword id="735213" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nescafe">Nescafe</keyword> coffee in a bright red cup in the perfectly manicured hands of Deepika turns into more than just coffee. It transforms into a brew that provokes a ‘regular guy’ to ‘switch on the best in him’ and land a date with a drop-dead gorgeous lady.</li>

What celebrities in effect do for brands is take their target consumers down the ‘awareness-knowledge-liking’ road, right up to the cusp of a purchase consideration. Here’s where more often than not, celebrity influences comes to a grinding halt. Here’s where consumers put on their decision making hat, so they can sift through brands choices they have to arrive at the one to buy. The two acts in the consumer decision making sequence that celebrities can’t engineer are –

		Influence Preference – Though Deepika may have done the job in getting a target group to like Nescafe, thus getting the brand into their ‘consideration set’, there’s no guarantee young coffee drinkers will pick it over other competing brands. That’s because taste, price, packaging, merchandising, other such variables will override celebrity associations to become the critical issues of consideration before a purchase decision.</li>
</ol>

	<li value="2"> Dictate Conviction – For a final purchase, brands must compellingly convince consumers they are the best among the rest. So a Snapdeal with Aamir will hold no relevance to an online retail buyer. Neither will a Dhoni or a Kohli in the sneaker category. What will now matter is available <keyword id="154361" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="feedback">feedback</keyword> and other information on performance from non-marketing sources. So for example, reviews on delivery, service, product quality, exchanges, and cancellations by other online buyers will dictate if an online retailer’s services are patronized. The celebrities would by now have vanished into the woodwork.</li>

It’s important to note celebrities are akin to the ‘nimbu-mirchi’ in the Irfaan Khan-Ceat SUV Tyres Ad. The lemon-chilli fruit combination may help you feel good in the saddle (read, get consumers to like your brand) , but in the end it’s your astute driving and braking on top quality tires (read, superior brand value proposition) that will save you (read, get the brand consumer patronage).

The Park is also home to a host of other wild animals, including leopards, striped hyenas, crocodiles, langurs, rhesus macaques, jackals, jungle cats, caracals, blackbuck, black-naped hare, chinkara and hundreds of species of birds. <div type="image" title="Ranthamore National Park" msid="82015236" hostid="261"></div>Ranthambore was declared a tiger reserve in 1973, and seven years later, a 274.5 square kilometre area of the forest was declared as Ranthambore National Park. Today, the Park covers an area of 1334 square kilometres after the adjacent Keladevi Sanctuary, Sawai Mansingh sanctuary and a few other forests were added to the Park's <a href="https://www.wwfindia.org/about_wwf/critical_regions/national_parks_tiger_reserves/ranthambore_tiger_reserve/">territory</a>. The topography consists primarily of grasslands and forest cover featuring primarily hardy 'dhak' (Butea monosperma) trees that can withstand long dry spells. Also called 'Flame of forest', these dhak trees flower even during the dry season. Safaris<div type="image" title="Ranthambore National Park" msid="82015215" hostid="261"></div>If you really want to see a tiger, be sure to book at least three safaris. Ten kilometres from Sawai Madhopur is the first gate of the Park, and an additional 3 kilometres will take you to the main gate. The safaris take place twice daily -- morning and evening. You have the option to book a Gypsy vehicle that will ensure a more private experience. Else, you can book a seat in a canter which is basically a large open van. Booking can be made in advance from the <a href="http://www.rajasthanwildlife.in/">website</a>, or you can try your luck directly at the Forest Office who keep a few canters and a Gypsy on hold for impromptu reservations.Ranthambore Fort Smack in the middle of the Park is the fascinating 10th-century Ranthambore Fort, strewn around which are ancient temples and mosques, hunting pavilions, lakes and vine-covered chhatris. Built by the Chauhan Rajputs, the Fort is believed to be the first Jauhar site (mass suicide by immolation) in Rajput history. The rather grim story is that the ruler Hammir Deva was embroiled in a long battle with Muslim forces. Although Hammir fought off the invaders, the women who were seeking refuge in the Fort learned that he had succumbed on the battlefield and preferring death to dishonour, they committed mass suicide. Covering an area of 4.5 square kilometres, the ruins of the Fort provide a great vantage point to view the surrounding areas. The Fort also has a few temples dedicated to Ganesha, Shiva and Ramlalaji. DastkarThis not-for-profit NGO was established in 1981 to empower village women to earn regular income by selling their textile and embroidery work. Situated a little beyond the park entrance, the Dastkar Ranthambore Project was started in 1991. At the time, there were only 100 <keyword id="940905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bandhani">Bandhani</keyword> workers in Sawai Madhopur. Today, more than 2000 craftspeople work here. The workshop and outlet is definitely worth a visit. <div type="image" title="Ranthambore National Park" msid="82015255" hostid="261"></div> Getting thereAround 463 kilometres from Delhi, Ranthambore can be reached by car, or you can take a train to the town of Sawai Madhopur. There are a bunch of trains that ply this route, including the Nizamuddin–Kota Jan Shatabdi (12060) that leaves Delhi at 1.15 pm and arrives at Sawai Madhopur at around 6 pm. Or you can opt for the Golden Temple Mail (12904) that departs from the Nizammudin station in Delhi at 7.05 am and arrives at Sawai Madhopur at 1 pm. Places to stay There are dozens of places to stay to suit every budget near the Park. <a href="https://www.khemvillas.com/">Khem Villas</a>, a rather swanky property, is run by the late Fateh Singh Rathore's son who was an instrumental force behind the tiger conservation movement here. This impressive eco-lodge set in 22 acres of organic farmland and reafforested land has various accommodation options on offer -- from rooms in the colonial-style bungalow to luxury tents and stone cottages. Run by the <keyword id="167201" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Tourism-Development-Corporation">Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation</keyword>, <a href="http://rtdc.tourism.rajasthan.gov.in/Client/HotelDetails.aspx?HotelID=SawaiMadhopurJhoomarBaori">RTDC Castle Jhoomar Baori</a> is around 7 kilometres from the station. The property was a former royal hunting lodge set on a hilltop and features basic borderline shabby rooms, but the location and price make up for these shortcomings. Located at a distance from the main city, Clarks Resort Abhyaran Ranthambore is another reasonably-priced hotel with 30 rooms, a spa and a pool, among other facilities. Customers have shared rave reviews about the staff and the food.
