<p>On Sunday, June 23, a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supermoon-2013-dates-and-when-to-watch-on-june-23-2013-6">supermoon</a> lit up the night sky. </p>
<p>A super<keyword id="42440" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Moon">moon</keyword> occurs when a full moon gets closest to the Earth during its orbit. </p>
<p>There are several <keyword id="586617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="supermoon">supermoon</keyword>s each year, but the latest supermoon is the biggest and brightest of 2013. It marks the closest encounter between the Earth and moon until August 2014.</p>
<p>The June supermoon was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supermoon-2013-dates-and-when-to-watch-on-june-23-2013-6" target="_blank">14%</a><a href="http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/display.cfm?News_ID=44049" target="_blank"> larger and 30% brighter</a> than a typical full moon is, says NASA.</p>
<p>Here's what the giant, glowing moon looked like in pictures from around the world. </p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">A <keyword id="586617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="supermoon">supermoon</keyword> occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon being closest to Earth in its orbit, also known as perigee. The near perfect timing of these two celestial events makes the moon appear larger and brighter in the night sky. </span></p>
<p>The moon will be closest to Earth at 7:32 a.m EDT on June 23, but you <a href="http://www.wjla.com/articles/2013/06/supermoon-preview-june-23rd-90240.html" target="_blank">will be able to see the supermoon shining bright</a> on Saturday, June 22 as well. </p>
<p>Sunday's supermoon will appear<a href="http://www.wjla.com/articles/2013/06/supermoon-preview-june-23rd-90240.html" target="_blank"> 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter</a> than a regular full moon does, <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NASA">NASA</keyword> scientist Michelle Thaller tells ABC News. </p>
<p>The June supermoon will be the largest one in 2013 — the moon won't come this close to Earth again until August 2014 — but you can expect another supermoon on July 22. The last supermoon was on May 25. </p>
<p>While a supermoon does bring extra-high tides, the extra gravitational force is not big enough to produce any significant changes in seismic activity for those who are concerned that the moon's close proximity to Earth will trigger earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. </p>

Supermoon 2013 Dates And When To Watch 

<p>There's an especially large and bright full moon coming out this Saturday night. So, if you want an exceptionally good look at some of the stunning features on the lunar surface, Saturday will be the time to see them.</p><p>One of the easiest features to spot, called the Tycho crater and shown in the photo below, will be worth a look, wrote Tim Hunter for the <a href="http://tucson.com/entertainment/outdoors/your-map-to-saturday-s-supersized-full-moon/article_e454995a-717d-55a1-a92b-c23465e8060b.html">Arizona Daily Star</a>:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon#/media/File:FullMoon2010.jpg">Gregory H. However, there's another factor that comes into play, which has to do with the moon's orbit.</p><p>Perigee is not a concrete number: it changes every lunar orbit. So, the distance the moon is to Earth at perigee for one orbit can be slightly larger or smaller than during another orbit.</p><p>For example, the moon's perigee this month will bring it to exactly 222,631 miles from Earth. But next month, on Sept. 28, perigee will happen when the moon is even closer: 221,753 miles from Earth.</p><p>In fact, September's lunar perigee is special because it's the closest perigee of the entire year. As a result, this perigee gets a special name: proxigee.</p><p>And lucky for supermoon gazers, the full moon will fall on that same night of Sept. 28, making September's supermoon the best of the year. How to watch the last supermoon of the year tonight

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Christian Hartmann</span></p><p class="caption">A statue on the roof of Notre-Dame cathedral is silhouetted in front of a supermoon in Paris, France.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Here is what you need to know. </p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fed-fomc-statement-interest-rates-december-2016-2016-12">The Fed sees 3 rate hikes in 2017</a>.</strong> The Fed hiked its key interest rate 25 basis points to a range of 0.50% to 0.75% at Wednesday's meeting and upgraded its forecast to three rate hikes in 2017 versus its prior forecast of two. </p><p><strong>Bond markets everywhere are getting crushed. </strong>Post-Fed selling has run the US 10-year yield up about 20 bps to 2.62%, its highest since June 2014. Meanwhile, selling in Europe is having the biggest impact on the UK 10-year, which trades up 14 bps at 1.52%. </p><p><strong><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bank-of-england-december-interest-rate-decision-and-minutes-2016-12">The US dollar is surging</a>. </strong>The greenback trades higher by 0.9% against a basket of its peers as traders continue to pile in following Wednesday's rate hike. Of the majors, the dollar's gains are strongest against the Japanese yen, which trades down 1.2% at 118.39 per dollar, its weakest since February. </p><p><strong><a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/indices">Stock markets around the world trade mixed</a>. </strong>Hong Kong's Hang Seng (-1.8%) lagged overnight and France's CAC (+0.9%) leads in Europe. The S&amp;P 500 is on track to open higher by 0.1% near 2,256. </p><p><strong>Markets are betting the next Fed rate hike could happen by mid-2017. </strong>World Interest Rate Probability data provided by Bloomberg shows a 16.6% chance the Fed hikes 25 bps at its February meeting and a 50.2% probability a 25 bp hike happens by May. </p><p><strong>The Bank of England meets. </strong>The central bank is expected to hold its key interest rate at 0.25%, but traders will be looking for clues as to whether or not the BOE's next move could be to tighten policy as head Mark Carney recently spoke about both an improving inflation picture and economy. The British pound is weaker by 0.6% at 1.2486.</p><p><strong><a href="https://www.markiteconomics.com/Survey/PressRelease.mvc/0d5a2f2a59af4e8d906183cd0fc9d9c6">Europe's PMIs were mixed</a>. </strong>The Flash Eurozone PMI Composite Output Index held at 53.9 in December as manufacturing gained while the service sector slowed. German manufacturing led the way, posting a flash reading of 55.5, its strongest since January 2014. The euro is down 1.1% at 1.0417 versus dollar and at its lowest level since January 2003. </p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoo-data-breach-billion-accounts-2016-12?r=UK&amp;IR=T">Yahoo revealed another huge hack</a>. </strong>In what may be the biggest hack ever, the company says more than 1 billion accounts may have had <span>phone numbers, birth dates, and security questions stolen by hackers during an attack that took place in August 2013.</span></p><p><strong>Earnings reports trickle out. </strong>Adobe Systems and Oracle will release their quarterly results after markets close. </p><p><strong>US economic data is heavy. </strong>Empire Manufacturing, initial jobless claims, and Philly Fed will all be released at 8:30 a.m. ET before Markit US Manufacturing PMI crosses the wires at 9:45 a.m. ET.</p>

<p>It's that time of year again! For those in North America, the Harvest Moon will look brightest and fullest at sunset on Monday night, Sept. 8.</p>
<p>The Harvest Moon is the name for the full moon that is closest to the autumnal equinox, or the official start of fall, on Sept. 22. Traditionally, every full moon has special nickname that says something about the season or time of year in which it appears. For example, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-february-snow-moon-2013-2">Snow Moon</a> happens in February during winter and the Flower Moon is in May during spring. Before electricity, moonlight was crucial for farmers who had to work after sundown, especially in early autumn when many crops are ready to be harvested. For that reason, the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox was called the "Harvest Moon." The Harvest Moon can come either two weeks before or two weeks the autumnal equinox. This year it's a bit early.</p>
<p>But the Harvest Moon is special for another reason. Typically, the moon rises about 50 minutes later each day throughout the year. But when the full moon occurs near the fall equinox, the gaps between moonrises are shorter. The moon rises only about 30 minutes later each night, appearing at sunset. This has to do with the moon's path, which makes a narrow angle with the horizon at the beginning of autumn. Not only does the moon rise earlier than usual in the evening, but this happens for several nights in a row - before and after the full moon - resulting in three consecutive days of the moon appearing at nearly the same time.</p>
<p>Both of these events give the illusion that the Harvest Moon is bigger, brighter, and closer, even though it's not. The moon is simply closest to the horizon at sunset, when most people are looking for the Harvest Moon. This year, the <a href="http://earthsky.org/space/harvest-moon-2#" target="_blank">Harvest Moon will appear even bigger than usual because it's a supermoon</a>, "when "the moon turns full less than one day after reaching lunar perigee - the moon's closest point to Earth for the month," according to EarthSky.</p>
<p>Also, when the moon is near the horizon, it must pass through more dust and cloud particles that scatter blue light and only let red pass through. That's why the Harvest Moon usually looks yellow, orange, or red.</p>
