It has now found a solution to this and is going to partner technology-focused startups as a business imperative to reinvent itself. <br />

The maker of <a href="file:///C:/Users/gunja.d/Documents/October%202015/Dove%20soap,%20Sunsilk%20shampoo%20and%20Lipton%20tea">Dove soap, Sunsilk shampoo and Lipton tea</a> wants to remain relevant in the market which is getting influenced by disruptive technologies . Therefore, it has short-listed ten startups that can get access to a part of its business, mentors and other resources.<br />

The India's largest consumer goods maker can gain from new technologies that will help the company in engaging consumers, shoppers or the way it distributes products.<br />
 <br />
Commenting about the company’s new move, its chief executive and managing director, Sanjiv Mehta said it is all about 'pioneering the future' with startups which are relevant for the business. “HUL has a long heritage of 'experimenting, planning &amp; perfecting' the capabilities which support the future of our business whilst startups typically launch and learn," he said.<br />

On Friday, HUL has launched a global initiative, Unilever Foundry, in India.<br />

So what can HUL, which controls nearly 15% of the country's consumer products market, possibly gain from small <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startups%27">startups</a>? For one, ideas from startups can come handy across operations such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=marketing%2C+advertising+and+distribution">marketing, advertising and distribution</a>, giving it an edge over rivals that still rely mostly on in-house experts for key business decisions.<br />

Experts are of the view that the move would also help HUL shift its rigid corporate mindset to imbibe the agility and mentality of startups in its business.<br />

When organizations become too huge in scale and size, the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial mindset tends to come down, said Raghu Viswanath, managing director of Vertebrand Management Consultants.<br />
 <br />
"It therefore becomes critical to collaborate or acquire companies that can help such large organisations innovate and grow. Scarce talent is another reason why such partnerships become critical." Two years ago, HUL partnered a startup, Ozonetel, for Kan Khajura Tesan, a mobile-based radio channel to reach media-dark villages.<br />

It went on to garner 1.85 crore subscribers and become one of the fastest-growing media channels in India. The company wants more such partnerships and has shortlisted ten young companies which will share their ideas and, if selected, work with the consumer goods major.<br />

For startups, too, there is a lot at stake. HUL, which sells 30 billion pieces of finished products every year, is one of the largest advertisers in the country and has a direct reach to 3.2 million outlets. Therefore, even a small slice of its business would mean scale for a startup.<br />
 <br />
Moreover, its parent company British-Dutch Unilever’s business spans across 190 countries to reach two billion consumers every day, something that a young company can piggyback for its global reach.<br />
 <br />
HUL said the company has always been talking about becoming more agile and having a bias for action which are the defining traits of an entrepreneur, and that Unilever Foundry creates opportunities for its people to engage with pioneering entrepreneurs and imbibe this spirit.<br />

"The biggest challenge for any startup is how do you take a great idea and convert it into a business proposition or have a proven technology and scale it up and that's where Unilever Foundry comes into play," said Mehta.<br />

India’s largest FMCG company is seeking some life-saving help from start-ups

<ul><li><strong><keyword id="9332781" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="beco" source="Orion">Beco</keyword> claims to be one of the most affordable and sustainable home products companies in India.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>India overall generates 25,940 tonnes of plastic waste every day, according to State of India’s Environment 2022 report.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>The startup claims that it uses cornstarch, bamboo, sugarcane, coconut and other natural alternatives of single-use plastic.</strong></li><li><strong>D2C companies like Forest Essentials, Godrej Consumer, Colgate-Palmolive and Hindustan Unilever have also been coming up with <keyword id="49089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainability" source="Orion">sustainability</keyword> initiatives.</strong></li></ul>Three friends Aditya, Anuj and Akshay, who graduated together from BITS Pilani, were regular participants in beach clean-ups in Mumbai. During one of their rounds, they found an orange wrapper of a chocolate bar <em>Marathon</em>, which was discontinued in the 1990s. Surprisingly, that plastic wrapper was well preserved and was still on the beach. <br /><br />That chocolate wrapper stuck in their minds and that’s how the sustainable home products company Beco was born in 2018. Beco captured the markets of Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai with its plant-based products like tearable <keyword id="15683675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="laundry-sheets" source="Orion">laundry sheets</keyword> (that work like soap strips), floor cleaners, reusable kitchen towel rolls, bamboo-based facial tissues, bamboo tissue roll and compostable garbage bags.<br /><br />Fast forward to 2022, their company Beco is now one of the most affordable and sustainable home products companies, they claim. Their mantra is simple – make products more sustainable and affordable; make sustainability a household habit. <br /><br />“The problem that we're trying to solve is to help make sustainability convenient. As a businessman, I look at myself as a consumer. Just making smarter, leaner choices today is actually not burning a hole in your pocket,” said Aditya Ruia, co-founder of Beco, in a conversation with Business Insider India.<br /><br />Almost everyone in day-to-day lives uses products that are made out of plastic or are not good for the environment and these small products become a larger plastic waste nightmare. The country overall generates 25,940 tonnes of plastic waste every day, according to State of India’s Environment 2022 <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/690-tonnes-added-daily-to-plastic-waste-mess/articleshow/90001711.cms">report </a>by Centre for Science and Environment.<br /><br />But since the pandemic, the awareness for sustainability and related products among people has risen as people have grown more environmentally conscious and are gradually shifting to sustainable products.<br /><br />“After the pandemic, I think home became the center of people's lives. Many ended up spending a lot of time at home. General awareness of what they were using at homes increased,” said Ruia. <br /><br />The startup claims it uses cornstarch, bamboo, sugarcane, coconut and other natural alternatives in place of single-use plastic. <br /><br />“Our <keyword id="15683677" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bamboo-laundry-sheets" source="Orion">bamboo laundry sheets</keyword> (that work like soap strips) challenge the usage of <keyword id="15683676" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="plastic-detergent-bottles" source="Orion">plastic detergent bottles</keyword>. They use 70% water and only 30% formula, which is also chemical based,” Ruia added. <br /><br />And by using these alternatives and adopting sustainable production and manufacturing practices, the company has been able to <a href="https://yourstory.com/2022/10/becos-growth-journey-celeb-investors-sustainability-startup">save</a> over 500 tonnes of plastic waste.The maximum cost of the 53 different home products it makes is under ₹1800.<br /><br />“You are using those garbage bags when throwing your trash in your kitchen or in your common spaces. There is a compostable garbage bag available for that. Beco was also one of the vendors for actress <keyword id="15683678" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dia-Mirzas-eco-friendly-wedding" source="Orion">Dia Mirza’s eco-friendly wedding</keyword> in 2021. It is also partnering with various big brands – We Work, BBlunt salon, Taj Hotel, Radisson – for increasing their sustainability practices. <br /><br />“So, when we are working with all of these partners, they have so much consumption in- house, whether it's in their salons, or in their co-working spaces, or in the hotels. We want to give an ESG (environmental, social, governance) push internally and promote sustainability,” Ruia said.<br /><br />D2C companies like Forest Essentials, Godrej Consumer, Colgate-Palmolive and Hindustan Unilever have also been coming up with similar sustainability initiatives.<br /><br />For instance, cosmetics and skincare company Forest Essentials has been using recyclable air-filled paper pouches or paper cushions for the products inside the cartons and for orders placed online via the company’s website, instead of plastic bubble wrap.<br /><br />Similarly, <a href="https://www.hul.co.in/news/2022/ways-were-helping-tackle-plastic-waste/">Hindustan Unilever</a> has initiated the usage of rHDPE, which is a plastic made from recycled High Density Polythene (25% recycled HDPE), in their personal care product bottles like TRESemmé, Sunsilk,Vaseline lotions, Surf excel laundry liquid and comfort fabric conditioner; and rPET (80% recycled PET) in blister packs for personal care brands such as Pepsodent toothbrushes and Vaseline lip care products.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Funds usage" comment="subhead" text="Funds usage"><span data-til="noop">Funds usage</span></cmsannotation><br />Beco recently raised $3 million in a series A round that saw participation from Rukum Capital, Priyavrata Mafatlal, Better Capital, Prashant Pittie, Titan Capital and others.<br /><br />It plans to use these funds for research and development and product innovation, to build visibility and marketing, and for driving customer acquisition. <br /><br />“In terms of growth for the business, I think the funds are being deployed to grow. And we feel that to grow, we need to innovate on products. And we also need to spend on customer acquisition and help tell the customer, share that story. If they relate, they can make that switch,” Ruia added.<br /><br />Beco, like any other company, is also facing challenges in hiring the right talent and from rising costs in the digital marketing space. “Overall, I think it's a very common challenge. I don't think we are in the FMCG space. This Mumbai startup is making tearable laundry sheets, bamboo-based facial tissues and more to replace plastic

It comes as global research into people’s experiences of the beauty industry reveals that using ‘normal’ to describe hair or skin makes most people feel excluded.<br /><br />The 10,000-person study, which was commissioned by Unilever, was conducted across nine countries. It found that:<br /><br /><ul><li>More than half of people (56%) think that the beauty and personal care industry can make people feel excluded.</li><li>People want to see the beauty and personal care industry focusing more on making people feel better, than just looking better (74%).</li><li>More than half of people (52%) say they now pay more attention to a company’s stance on societal issues before buying products.</li><li>Seven in ten people agree that using the word ‘normal’ on product packaging and advertising has a negative impact. For younger people – those aged 18-35 – this rises to eight in ten.</li></ul><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="India highlights:" text="India highlights:"><span data-til="noop">India highlights:</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />In India, making products that cater to all people is recognised as one of the most pressing challenges that the beauty and personal care industry should address; only behind making products affordable for all and being transparent on what ingredients are included.<br /><br />Almost two in three people in India (64%) agree that the beauty and personal care industry makes certain people feel excluded. Six in ten people in India (59%) say the industry makes certain people feel bad about the way they look and makes certain people feel bad about themselves (59%).<br /><br />The beauty industry is seen as contributing to the spread of narrow beauty ideals: over six in ten people in India (63%) agree that the BPC industry shares narrow beauty ideals, and two in three (66%) think that the industry pressurising people into thinking they need to look a certain way contributes to narrow beauty ideals.<br /><br />The majority of people in India agree that the BPC industry still has some way to go in representing people of various body types (76%), people from different age groups (77%) people from different ethnicities (74%) and people from the LGBTQIA+ community (67%).<br /><br />Over eight in ten people (83%) think that using the word “normal” on beauty product packaging and in advertising has a negative impact on people. This includes making people who don’t feel as though they have “normal hair” or “normal skin” feel excluded or feel bad about themselves.<br /><br />The majority of people in India, feel positively about Unilever’s commitment: they agree that removing the word “normal” would inspire them to feel more positive about the way they look (70%), believe that it is the right thing to do (69%), and feel positively about the company behind it (67%).<br /><br />The trend is clear: two in three people in India (65%) say they now pay more attention to a company’s stance on societal issues before they buy products than they used to. Six in ten people there (63%) will not buy a product if they do not agree with the company’s vision of D&amp;I, even if the company offers the best price.<br /><br />With its commitment, the majority of people in India (71%) think Unilever is working to broaden the definition of beauty in society. Additionally, broadening the definition of beauty is not only the right thing to do for profit but also for people according to seven in ten of people in India.<br /><br />Sunny Jain, President Beauty &amp; Personal Care, said: “With one billion people using our beauty and personal care products every day, and even more seeing our advertising, our brands have the power to make a real difference to people’s lives. Unilever’s brands perceived as more purposeful grew more than twice as fast as the rest of the portfolio in 2020. HUL to eliminate the word ‘normal’ from all of its beauty and personal care brands’ packaging and advertising

<ul><li><keyword id="44863" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hul" source="Orion">HUL</keyword> in its result said that its growth in the quarter was competitive and profitable with Domestic Consumer Growth of 11% and Profit After Tax (PAT) growth of 17%. </li><li>While its Home Care segment grew at 23%, Beauty &amp; Personal Care grew 7% led by Skin Cleansing, Skin Care and Colour Cosmetics. Meanwhile, Foods &amp; Refreshment grew 3% on a very high prior year comparator, driven by solid performance in Tea and Ice-creams.</li></ul>Hindustan Unilever Limited, in its results for the quarter ended 31st December 2021 said that it spent Rs 1,193 crore on advertising in the quarter. It also said that it saw strong, all-round performance in the quarter.<br /><br />"Growth in the quarter was competitive and profitable with Domestic Consumer Growth of 11% and Profit After Tax (PAT) growth of 17%. Business fundamentals remained strong with handsome market share gains in all our divisions, both urban and rural markets and across price segments. Underlying Volume Growth at 2% was significantly ahead of the market," its report stated.<br /><br />Its Home Care segment witnessed a growth at 23% and was broad based with strong performance in Fabric Wash and Household Care. Fabric Wash grew in strong double-digits with all parts of the portfolio performing well. Household Care sustained its robust performance and grew in high teens on a strong base. Liquids and Fabric Sensations continue to outperform driven by effective market development actions. Calibrated price increases were taken across Fabric Wash and Household Care portfolios to partly offset the significant inflation in input costs.<br /><br />Its Beauty &amp; Personal Care segment grew 7% led by Skin Cleansing, Skin Care and Colour Cosmetics. Skin Cleansing delivered double digit growth driven by strong performance in ‘Lux’, ‘<keyword id="94301" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dove" source="Orion">Dove</keyword>’ and ‘Pears’. Hair Care had a steady quarter enabled by strong performance in premium portfolio. Its brands ‘Clinic Plus’, ‘Dove’ and ‘Sunsilk’ were rated as the top 3 Hair Care brands in the country as per ‘Kantar Brand Health Check Report’. "A calibrated approach towards price increase in Skin Cleansing and Hair Care has helped protect our business model even as vegetable oils continue to inflate at record levels. Together, Skin Care and Colour Cosmetics delivered double-digit growth and are above pre-COVID levels. During this quarter, we had several innovations including ‘Dove Love and Care’ range of moisturizers, serums by clean beauty brand ‘Simple’, a new toothpaste ‘Sensitive Mineral Active’ launched in Tamil Nadu and ‘Lakme’ Volume Mascara, Liquid Concealer and Highlighter," the report further stated.<br /><br />HUL's Foods &amp; Refreshment segment grew 3% on a very high prior year comparator, driven by solid performance in Tea and Ice-creams. Tea continued its robust performance and grew competitively on a strong base delivering high teens 2Y CAGR. Focus on market development actions in Health Food Drinks resulted in handsome market share and penetration gains. Ice Creams had a very strong quarter delivering 2Y CAGR in high teens enabled by impactful innovations and effective activations. Foods grew on a strong base led by Jams and Ketchup. ‘Kissan Peanut Butter’ and ‘Hellman’s Mayonnaise’ innovations continue to perform well. ‘<keyword id="6595123" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bru" source="Orion">Bru</keyword>’ launched a new product ‘Bru Beaten Coffee’.<br /><br />Its EBITDA margin at 25.4% improved 100 bps YoY. PAT at Rs. 2,243 Crores increased by 17% year-on-year. Profit after tax before exceptional items at Rs 2,292 Crores was up 17%. "In the context of unprecedented inflation, we continue to manage our business dynamically driving savings harder across all lines of P&amp;L and taking calibrated pricing actions using the principles of Net Revenue Management. We continue to invest competitively behind our brands," the report stated.<br /><br />Commenting on the results, <keyword id="169120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjiv-mehta" source="Orion">Sanjiv Mehta</keyword>, Chairman and Managing Director said: ‘We have delivered a strong and resilient performance in the quarter despite moderation in market growths and significant levels of commodity inflation. It allows consumers to reuse and recycle plastic. <br /><br />According to Terrin.org, around <a href="https://www.teriin.org/sites/default/files/files/factsheet.pdf">43%</a> of manufactured plastic in India is used for packaging purposes, and is mostly single-use plastic. India produces an estimated 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, which is likely to reach 165 million tonnes by 2030. With this growing concern around plastic pollution generated by companies, more and more brands are realising the importance of becoming sustainable and relooking at their packaging strategy. The ban on single-use plastic has also further pushed manufacturers to look at green alternatives. <br /><br />So, to do its bit for the environment and undo some of the damage caused by plastic, HUL’s Smart Fill machine will allow its consumers to reuse their plastic bottles by refilling products from its brands like Surf Excel, Comfort and Vim, to begin with. <br /><div type="Youtube" id="Bkjlj6S5c5E" title="HUL‘s ‘Smart Fill’ machine empowers consumers to reduce plastic waste" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Bkjlj6S5c5E/mqdefault.jpg"></div><br />The vending machine has been installed at Reliance Smart Acme Mall in Mumbai and the project is currently in pilot stage. <br /><br />Sharing how HUL is slashing its product prices to nudge consumers to switch, Prabha Narsimhan – Executive Director (Home Care) for Hindustan Unilever and Vice President (Home Care) for Unilever South Asia said, “As an incentive, consumers are being offered Rs 30 off on the MRP or effective price at the store if they get their own bottle and Rs 15 off to those who purchase the Smart Fill bottle. The flagship brands that consumers can avail these benefits on include Surf Excel liquid for Top Load and Front Load washing machines; Comfort Fabric Conditioner and Vim Dishwash Liquid Gel.” <br /><br />The COVID-19 pandemic has added a safety dimension to sustainability that consumers and organisations must now balance. However, for HUL, the timing couldn’t be more perfect to launch this pilot.<br /><br />Sharing why, Narsimhan said, “COVID-19 in general has been difficult for businesses and brands across sectors. After most COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, we have continued our on-ground efforts with health guidelines in place, for elimination of plastic litter. All our plastic waste collection partners mobilized their resources to minimize disruption without risking the health of their staff members and partners. In fact, COVID has improved our focus on responsible disposal of waste, which is why we feel it is a good time to start this pilot.”<br /><br />After gauging the response at Reliance Smart, the project will be implemented across the country. <br /><br />Narsimhan said, “We believe that upstream interventions such as shifting from single use towards re-use and refill models can be one of the most impactful solutions to plastic waste from an environmental, economic, and social perspective. This project will serve as an ideal pilot to gather learnings and use them to replicate it across the state and the country. Given that this is our first initiative, we have partnered with Reliance. In fact, we had partnered with Reliance Smart across 3 cities, in 2019 to carry out an awareness drive amongst customers on the importance of segregation of waste at the household level for effective waste management. Continuing with our shared vision to manage plastic waste, we have collaborated with Reliance Smart for this pilot project as well. We are hopeful that through our awareness building exercises, we will be able to ensure mass behavioral change in the consumers regarding the role that they can play in curbing this menace. We aim to use learnings from this pilot project in Mumbai to create a scalable refill business model in partnership with prominent retailers and modern trade outlets.”<br /><br />To further promote the cause and get more consumers to visit the mart, HUL has partnered with influencers in the vicinity. <br /><br />Narsimhan shared the marketing plan with us. She said, “One of the key aspects to draw visibility to the vending machine is in-store branding. Our effort would be to make sure that as more and more consumers visit and experience this model, they will be able to help us spread the awareness through word-of-mouth, which we plan to amplify further. We have also tied-up with a few influencers in the catchment areas around the store that will help us create surround sound around the Smart Fill. As the initiative scales up further, we will look at a more broad-based digital campaign that will help us further spread the message across consumers.” <br /><br />Millennials and GenZ today are much more conscious of the brands they choose. Their choice usually depends on how much of an effort a brand is making towards helping the environment and society at large. While Narsimhan agreed that young people are more likely to be the first adopters of refilling, HUL is trying to target all age groups. <br /><br />She said, “Millennials and Gen Zs are by far one of the most conscious consumers we have witnessed in the last two decades. Born in a digital age, this generation is socially aware, more health-conscious and understands the impact of their actions on the environment. All our sustainable interventions are designed to not just cater to their sensibilities, but towards the larger goal of driving real, on-ground impact that is accessible. As for the ‘Smart Fill’ project, we are catering to consumers across demographics including Millennials and Gen Zs. Since Reliance Smart is a retail outlet that garners footfalls across age groups; we intend to bolster awareness and empower our consumers to make smarter decisions when it comes to the issue of plastic waste generation.” <br /><br />But this isn’t the only sustainable effort that the FMCG giant has taken in this year.<br /><br />Walking us through the past action-filled 6 months, Narsimhan shared, “We have substituted commodity polymers with performance-based polymers, optimized the packaging designs and changed the packaging formats of our products to consume less plastic. For example: Pond’s Talc was recognized at the 24th DuPont Global Packaging Award for reducing packaging through innovation. We have developed coating technology to replace the polymer coating in our soap cartons. Our soap bar range cartons in skin cleansing are plastics free. We have started migrating to recyclable flexibles across our portfolio starting with pilots in few brands like soap wrapper of Lux and Lifebuoy, Sunsilk shampoo sachets and Pond’s tubes. We have also started using rPET (80% recycled PET) in our blister packs for personal care brands such as Pepsodent toothbrush, Vaseline lip care. We have launched Vim liquid bottles having 50% rPET. We have initiated use of rHDPE (25% recycled HDPE) in our personal care bottles like Tresemme, Sunsilk, Surf Excel Laundry liquid and Comfort fabric conditioner.” <br /><br />Brands play a huge role in bringing about change in society and Narsimhan said that brands should use that to empower consumers to make better choices. <br /><br />She said, “Consumers relate to brands that resonate with their own way of thinking. Brands that don’t just advocate such ideas but put them into measurable, result-oriented action. Therefore, brands can and must play their part in empowering consumers to make sustainable choices. And one of the key aspects of this empowerment journey is by offering choices that are accessible and hassle-free. With our plastic waste collection initiative and now the refill machine, we are encouraging and empowering our consumers to be a part of this solution. These small changes that consumers make on a day-to-day basis can lead to a sizable impact overall.”<br /><br />When it comes to sustainability, we often hear the three popular R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle in every marketing campaign. Many companies have promoted only recycle and reuse. However, reduce hits at consumption. As a result, HUL has also formulated long-term goals to focus on reduction of plastic. It has committed that by 2025 100% of the company’s plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable and halving use of virgin plastic by reducing the absolute use of plastic packaging and accelerating use of recycled plastic.<br /><br />Shedding some light on HUL’s larger sustainability efforts and vision, Narsimhan said, “We are committed to accelerating a transition to a circular economy, moving from the linear take-make-dispose model to a regenerative approach, which keeps materials at their highest value for as long as possible. We recently announced that from 2021 onwards, we will collect and facilitate environment-friendly processing of more plastic packaging waste than the plastic we use in our packaging. Since 2018, we have facilitated safe disposal of more than 1.5 lakh tons of post-consumer use plastic waste with the help of collection and disposal partners across India. We are also working closely with the government and other partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Xynteo for end-to-end pilot projects for plastic waste management. Apart from this, the Education Department of Maharashtra, HUL and Xynteo have rolled out a digital school curriculum focused on the importance of segregation, collection and safe disposal of waste. The programme reached nearly one lakh children in Maharashtra during its pilot last year and is currently being scaled across the state.”<br />

<p>Models can influence how people respond to them in extremely subtle ways. <br><br>Sometimes it's as simple as changing the direction of their gaze.</br></br></p>
<p>Take the Sunsilk shampoo ads that are pictured on the right. In one, the model is looking at the audience, and in the other, she stares at the bottle.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/eye-tracking-heatmaps-2014-7">Heatmaps</a> overlaying the images, generated using eye-tracking technology, reveal exactly where people were looking while viewing the ads.<br><br>When the model's eyes were on the product, viewers' eyes were on the product, too - and on t<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">he headline and name of the brand. These elements, important for making sales, got ignored when the model was looking at the audience.</span></br></br></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Business Insider asked Craig Mikes, executive director at Proof <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">Advertising</keyword>, to explain why.</span></p>
<p>"The model looking at the product creates a sense of flow for the viewer," Mikes said. "It also negates the creepy model staredown that is happening in the other ad, so you can draw more attention to the headline."</p>
<p>According to Mikes, it's not impossible to create effective ads featuring direct eye contact from models. It all depends on what the ad is trying to accomplish.</p>
<p>Take the People Looking campaign for Wonderbra, for instance. The ads, less straightforward than Sunsilk's, require a shift of perception on the viewer's part.</p>

<p>Sybil is apparently no stranger to the spotlight. Before marrying Orman last year, Sybil, who was a schoolteacher, apparently was a budding online video star. Her relatively small body of work includes high-concept art videos and a Taylor Swift cover. </p>
<p>Sybil apparently participated in a 2008 contest in which she <a href="https://www.turnerusd202.org/uploaded/AAA_School_Year_2009-2010/District_Information/District_Newsletters/E-ZineNo4-120609.pdf">filmed an online promotional campaign for Sunsilk hair products</a>. Sadly, that video has since been removed from YouTube.</p>

<p>One of the clips Sybil made with Beltran features her <a href="http://vimeo.com/7409694">on a bed singing Taylor Swift's "Our Song."</a> Another is a <a href="http://vimeo.com/18028180">"poetic video" called DREAMSCAPE</a> that shows a woman taking a walk while being pursued by an ominous figure and an intense techno soundtrack. According to the credits, Sybil didn't appear in DREAMSCAPE, but she helped come up with the "concept" for the video.</p>
<p>Orman is running as an independent, and polls show him in an extremely close race with incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kansas). His campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider about Sybil's videos. </p>

<p> Starting March 23, 2014 at 7 PM, one director's movie will be showcased each month for six months which will be inspired by the philosophies of different <keyword id="44863" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="HUL">HUL</keyword> brands such as Sunsilk, Tresemme, Ponds, Lakme and Close Up amongst others. Through each movie, the iconic directors will portray the take of today's youth on age-old topics of love, family, friendship, relationships and ambitions in an hour-long entertaining story.</p>
