Global chipmaker <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Qualcomm+Incorporated+">Qualcomm Incorporated</a> has appointed former chief of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BlackBerry">BlackBerry</a> India, <keyword id="963741" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sunil-Lalvani">Sunil Lalvani</keyword> as vice president and president of Qualcomm India. 
 Lalvani's appointment will be effective from July 27 and he will directly report to <keyword id="2882458" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cristiano-Amon">Cristiano Amon</keyword>, executive vice president and co-president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, reported the Economic Times. 
 
"I am pleased to welcome Sunil Lalvani as vice president and president of Qualcomm India. His broad industry experience and extensive leadership experience will enable us to strengthen existing strategic relationships, identify new opportunities for business growth and build new relationships in India," Amon said. 
 
The company took the decision to appoint Lalvani after Avneesh Agrawal, senior vice president and president of Qualcomm India and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=South+Asia+">South Asia</a> exits the company. 
 
Lalvani, who holds a bachelor's degree in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=electronics">electronics</a> engineering from <keyword id="201207" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-University">Bombay University</keyword> and a post graduate diploma in marketing management from Xavier's Institute of Management, India, has more than 20 years of experience in sales, business development, strategic planning and business operations across the IT and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=telecom+">telecom</a> sectors. 
 Earlier, Lalvani was responsible for overseeing and driving <keyword id="6354356" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="BlackBerry">BlackBerry</keyword>'s overall business strategy and growth in India. He was focused on driving differentiated solutions for consumers and enterprise customers. He was also instrumental in leading a strong engagement with Carrier partners and ISV's in India, to drive uptake of BlackBerry's services portfolio in the India region. 
 Prior to that, Lalvani held the position of director of enterprise sales. He also worked at EMC Corporation, <keyword id="22846" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="nokia-corporation">Nokia Corporation</keyword>, <keyword id="102187" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cisco-Systems">Cisco Systems</keyword> and SITA Equant Network (now Orange Business Services).

Meet Sunil Lalvani, Qualcomm’s head in India

<keyword id="6354356" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BlackBerry">Blackberry</keyword> is probably the only brand that been massively loved and overtly hated by the world. But the Blackberry Boys are making a comeback. 
	 
	But if you think it’s the smartphone we are talking about then you have got it wrong! One of the first smartphone makers in the world, the company has now graduated to selling software in the race for the survival of the fittest. 
	 “So, while there has been a lot of competition and price erosion in the market, we have been focusing on mid to high end segments of smartphones and catering to our core consumer base – the corporate. Our core strength has always been security. In the last 18 months, we doled out software which works across iOs, Android, Windows and Blackberry,” <keyword id="963741" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunil-Lalvani">Sunil Lalvani</keyword>, managing director of Blackberry India told BI India. 
	 
	He added the company realized that for the primary concern for the corporate sector is security of the data, which was very low as employees used different smartphones- ranging from high end to low end models. “Android is all pervasive. So, what the company has rolled out is a software called BES 12- Blackberry Enterprise Server 12, which provides secures the data that is being exchanged on the devices used by the employees irrespective of whether it is smartphone or a tablet,” noted Lalvani. 
	 
	He claimed that the company’s software revenue have gone up and in the last one year, revenues from the software division have gone up to $68 billion in the last quarter ending February 2015. The year-on-year growth for the company’s software business has been 20%. 
	 
	The smartphone manufacturer has also been focusing on services such as BBM Meetings, which is a cross platform, multiparty video and voice chat. The second one in the same category is Movirtu, which provides a technology that allows virtual sims on one single physical sim. “Today, in India, a lot of people prefer dual sim devices as they want separate numbers for their office and personal use. What Movirtu does is that it virtualizes your primary Sim into different numbers. So, while you have one physical sim- Movirtu will actually give you nine different virtual numbers at your perusal,” he said. 
	 
	According to Lalvani, Movirtu is a great cost-cutting measure as it will help the companies to understand the quantum of official calls made by an employee which will help them reimburse accordingly. ““We are selling through the operators and we will get the revenue out of that. Our own clout services are also another revenue generating stream for us. So a consumer can buy any device from the retail market and can subscribe to our clout services, which provides security to the sensitive information that the phone holds. So it is a security service that we offer through the carriers and it is a revenue sharing model,” added Lalvani. 
	 
	Globally, the software business contributes over 50% of the business while the remaining comes from its services and smartphones categories. Lalvani stated that the same ratio was also applicable for the Indian business, which is among the top ten markets for the brand.

Blackberry gets smart! Moves from smartphone to software

Blackberry has been through the dark. In the past two years, the company lost the battle with Korean major Samsung and homegrown smartphone maker <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>. The brand’s market share, according to market estimates, also tumbled from 14.8% in April-June 2010 to 7% in 2012 and 2.9% in 2013. The company hit a low when its market share reduced to a meager 0.5% in January-March 2014. 
 But <keyword id="963741" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunil-Lalvani">Sunil Lalvani</keyword>, the India head for Blackberry is an optimistic man. At the recently held enterprise briefing at The Oberoi, Lalvani tells BI India that the last two years have been ‘fantastic’ for the company. 
 
“The company went back to its roots in the past eighteen months. Our core strength has been the enterprise segment because of we offered them features such as emails, Blackberry Messenger (BBM) that were available with the phone. Now that is Blackberry’s USP as we run a private network that connects up to about 500 carriers worldwide and gives an unmatched email experience,” he says. 
 
However, he admits that the company lost a major chunk of its market share in the last few years. “If you look at it historically, we have been riding on the wave of smartphone growth from 2000 to 2010 or 2011 and our core target audience has loved the whole qwerty experience. 
 
From 2010 onwards, there has been an influx of low cost smartphone makers especially in the Indian market. But if you look at our manufacturing and supply chain, then you will realise they do not allow us to sell our devices below $100. For us, it did not make sense that we sell our phones below the $100 range as we could not have afford it. So, owing to that we lost a lot of our market share both globally and in India,” explains Lalvani. 
 
The company is not present in either below Rs 10,000 or below Rs 12,000 segments in the smartphone market. Thus, it has lost out on nearly 80% of the market. “Our yardstick is not the market share because you can only think of market share when you have an entire product portfolio. For us, our benchmark is to assess how profitable are we and how are we growing our consumer base,” he notes. 
 
Lalvani says that the company’s strategy to focus more on software has helped them grow their margins in the smartphone segment globally. However, personally, the job has been challenging. “I have been with the company for five and half years now. The better part of the first four years was in the enterprise role- where I had to understand and focus on the enterprise market and develop better relationships with the consumers among others. I always believed that Blackberry’s core strength was in the corporate because of the security nature of the features that the company offered. Globally and in India, we did lose out to the low-cost handset makers,” he states. 
 
Recalling his appointment, he says that when this role was offered to me, about a year ago in May 2014, it was a tossup for him. “Do you take up a role when the company is declining or do you take it as a challenge and try to turn it around. The latter is what I did. I took it as a challenge as I strongly believed in the core values of the company. We were playing with our strengths such as security, collaborating or productivity and cutting across the platform. I saw that there’s a clear scope for us to grow in the Indian market," he avers. The company will soon roll out a new campaign targeting the enterprise.

Staying Productive While On Vacation

Narendra Nayak will be the new managing director for <keyword id="6354356" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BlackBerry">BlackBerry</keyword>'s India operations and will be responsible for driving the company’s software and services business through all channels in the country. 
 Three months ago BlackBerry's India head Sunil Lalvani joined San-Diego based <keyword id="28118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Chipmaker">chipmaker</keyword> <keyword id="104695" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Qualcomm">Qualcomm</keyword>. Since then the position was vacant. 
 A statement issued on Tuesday announced that Nayak, who had more than 30 years of experience in IT &amp; <keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Telecom">telecom</keyword> business management, will head the company’s operations in India. 
 
He had also worked at the venture-funded software company Linguanext Technologies.

After the <keyword id="459" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="price">price</keyword> cut on the <keyword id="1542644" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Z10">Z10</keyword>, <keyword id="6354356" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BlackBerry">BlackBerry</keyword> has dropped the price of their flagship QWERTY model (<keyword id="1542643" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Q10">Q10</keyword>) by 13%. The phone will now be available for Rs 38,990. The company wants their loyalists to explore the full potential of the BB10 platform. The brand also wants to show their commitment for the Indian consumer and wants to tap the potential customer who wants a QWERTY phone under the Rs 40,000 price point. 
 The Q10 is available at this special price from today and will continue to stay at the price till 26 January, 2014. This should boost the Q10 sales in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> and help BlackBerry recuperate. Though the company claims it has sufficient funds to last a lifetime, reports have stated that the company is pretty much stressed at the backend. 
 
Sunil Lalvani, Managing Director India, BlackBerry said “There are several customers in India who love the physical QWERTY experience offered by BlackBerry. At this compelling price point, QWERTY loyalists can take advantage of the powerful BlackBerry 10 platform as well as the unique QWERTY experience that the BlackBerry Q10 offers.” 
 
If you ask us this is a good move by the company to reduce prices and improve sales. However, we had expected slightly lower price, something below the 35K mark. That would have been a fabulous year ender offer.

BlackBerry Drops The Q10 Price By 13% In India

BlackBerry has launched its Z3 smartphone in India. The smartphone carries the price tag of Rs 15,990 and is the most affordable BlackBerry 10 mobile phone.

	The BlackBerry Z3 was introduced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014, following which it went on sale in Indonesia. BlackBerry Z3 features a 5-inch display and comes with BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2.1. It is the first device made under the Foxconn-BlackBerry partnership.

	BlackBerry Z3 has a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 along with 1.5GB of RAM. It has an 8GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 32 GB via microSD. The smartphone packs in a 2,500mAh. For camera, BlackBerry Z3 comes with a 5MP rear camera and a 1.1 MP front-facing camera. The BlackBerry Z3 includes a built-in FM radio.

	This smartphone comes with the BlackBerry Priority Hub, BBM, BlackBerry Keyboard, and BlackBerry 10 browser.

	The new BlackBerry Z3 smartphone is available for pre-booking with The MobileStore, Flipkart, and all BlackBerry Exclusive stores from June 25th to July 2nd.

	In addition to the device, BlackBerry has also launched its BlackBerry Maps in India and they are also available on the BlackBerry Z3.

The BlackBerry Z3 is also the first smartphone to be introduced from our strategic partnership with Foxconn and it further strengthens our commitment to enhance our devices portfolio,” said Sunil Lalvani, Managing Director for India at BlackBerry. “BlackBerry Z3 is the ultimate smartphone that gives users more ways to connect, share and communicate, providing the best tool for secure, reliable communications and collaboration with friends, family and co-workers.” 
	 
	We were hoping that the Canadian smartphone maker will launch the BlackBerry Z3 for around Rs 12,000, which we think would have been a great price for this 5-inch smartphone. However, the MRP of this smartphone is Rs. 15,990.
