At least 151 dead and dozens injured after being crushed in a large crowd during Halloween festivities in South Korea: reports

Seoul, June 9 (IANS) A South Korean court on Tuesday rejected the approval of an arrest warrant against the de-facto head of Samsung Group in connection with the controversial merger of two affiliates in 2015 with the alleged goal of cementing his leadership.<br /><br />The decision was made by Seoul Central District Court, where Lee Jae-yong had appeared Monday to complete proceedings that lasted for nine hours, reports Efe news.<br /><br />In the early hours of Tuesday the court decided that there was not sufficient probable cause to order the arrest of the Samsung heir.<br /><br />"There was insufficient explanation on the need to arrest the defendants against the principle of trial without detention," Judge Won Jung-sook said in statements.<br /><br />"In light of the importance of the case, whether the defendants are responsible, and if so, how much they are, should be determined through sufficient legal battles and court hearings," the Judge added.<br /><br />Two other group executives, Choi Gee-sung and Kim Jong-joong, who together with Lee are alleged by the prosecution to be the masterminds of the aforementioned merger, also avoided arrest.<br /><br />Several irregularities have been attributed to this operation, including alleged accounting fraud aimed at consolidating Lee's leadership shortly after his father, the group's chairman Lee Kun-hee, had a heart attack from which he has not yet recovered.<br /><br />All three executives are accused of stock price manipulation, violating external audit laws and unfair trading.<br /><br />Investigators believe that the value of Cheil Industries, one of the two companies of the group that was merged and of which Lee was the majority shareholder, was artificially inflated, and the opposite was done with the other company involved, Samsung C&amp;T.<br /><br />The three are also believed to have inflated the value of Samsung Bioepis, a joint venture between US-based Biogen and Samsung Biologics, which is also a subsidiary of Cheil, by some 4.5 billion won ($3 billion).<br /><br />Lee, who has denied the accusations, is also awaiting retrial for his alleged role in the so-called "Korean Rasputin" corruption scandal that rocked the country in 2016 and led to the impeachment of then-president Park Geun-hye.<br /><br />Lee was arrested in 2017 in connection with the case and went on to spend a year in jail. S.Korean court rejects arrest warrant for Samsung head

Seoul, June 8 (IANS) Lee Jae-yong, the de facto leader of Samsung Group, South Korea's largest conglomerate, appeared in court on Monday for a hearing to decide whether he will be arrested again amid allegations of his involvement in a merger and accounting fraud.<br /><br />Lee, also the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, showed up at the Seoul Central District Court in southern Seoul, reports Yonhap News Agency.<br /><br />The hearing is likely to last at least several hours, as many expect the court's decision to come out late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.<br /><br />He is under probe in connection with the controversial merger of two Samsung affiliates in 2015, an apparent key process in his takeover of control of the group from his ailing father, Lee Kun-hee.<br /><br />Last week, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office sought an arrest warrant for the Samsung scion, arguing he should be put back in jail, given the seriousness of his alleged wrongdoings and the possibility of destroying relevant evidence. <br /><br />It is a prelude to a widely expected indictment against Lee.<br /><br />Prosecutors also requested arrest warrants for two former Samsung executives, Choi Gee-sung and Kim Jong-joong, who had led the group's now-disbanded control tower, the Future Strategy Office.<br /><br />The three are accused of engaging in unfair trading, stock price manipulation and violation of laws on external audits.<br /><br />Kim faces an additional charge of making a false testimony in court.<br /><br />Investigators suspect the group's top management of having been deeply involved in what they believe was a systemic effort to help the father-to-son transition of Samsung's leadership. <br /><br />They believe that Lee was involved in a scheme to inflate the value of Cheil Industries Inc. and lower that of Samsung C&amp;T prior to the merger in 2015, Yonhap News Agency reported.<br /><br />Lee and his aides were also suspected of inflating the value of Samsung Bioepis, a joint venture between Samsung Biologics and the US-based Biogen Inc., by approximately 4.5 trillion won ($3 billion).<br /><br />Samsung Biologics is a subsidiary of Cheil Industries, of which Lee was the largest shareholder, with a stake of 23.2 per cent.<br /><br />The probe began in November 2018 when the Securities and Futures Commission under the Financial Services Commission filed a complaint against Samsung Biologics over suspicions of accounting fraud. <br /><br />Samsung has said that it has never deliberately manipulated the value of its companies and the prosecution has wrongly viewed the 2015 merger as related to its management succession.<br /><br />If the warrant is approved, it will be the first time in 28 months that Lee will be arrested for criminal charges.<br /><br />He was imprisoned for about a year in 2017 for bribing a confidant of former President Park Geun-hye in return for her administration's support for the 2015 merger.<br /><br />He was released in February 2018 after his sentence was suspended by an appeals court. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>CHOI WON-SUK/AFP/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">North Korean cheering squad hold their national flag and cheer at the 16th Asian Athletics Championships in Incheon on 04 September 2005.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>North Korea will be sending a delegation to the South Korean Winter Olympics, including its </strong><strong>popular, all-female cheer squad.</strong></li><li><strong>A North Korean expert told Business Insider it would take months to prepare to send such a large group to South Korea.</strong></li><li><strong>This indicates the North may have been waiting until its missile testing was completed, so it could negotiate in a position of strength.</strong></li></ul><p><br />In historic talks with South Korea on Tuesday, North Korea agreed to not only send a delegation of athletes to the Winter Olympics but also its popular, all-female cheer squad.</p><p>The squad, which can include hundreds of members, has frequently attended international sporting events in the past.</p><p>And, according to Andray Abrahamian, a North Korean expert at the Griffith Asia Institute and a Research Fellow at Pacific Forum CSIS, these trips require months of preparation.</p><p>"It's about preparing a group of young people to go into what North Korea sees as ideologically hostile territory and be on show for the world's media and for the South Korean public," Abrahamian told Business Insider. "They want to make sure they're resistant to ideas and images that may impact how they see their own country or other countries. The more people you take, the more difficult it is."</p><p>When it comes to the Winter Olympics, Abrahamian believes North Korea must have already conducted these preparations to be able to send such a large group of citizens to the games next month.</p><p>This would mean North Korea was planning its Olympic attendance long before Kim Jong Un said he was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kim-jong-un-north-korea-south-korea-talks-2018-1">"open to dialogue"</a> about the event in his 2018 New Year's Day address.</p><p>"I think they wanted to get their last big missile test done, so they could claim "completion" of their testing cycle and then begin a charm offensive," Abrahamian said.</p><p>"Leaving it late, and correctly guessing that Seoul would be receptive to North Korean participation, also leaves less time for opposition to the plan to develop. Regardless, this participation isn't a recent idea. I'm sure Pyongyang has been sitting on it for months."</p><p>The cheer squad, with its several hundred members, will help magnify the size of North Korea's Olympic contingent to observers. The only competitive athletes the country is currently sending are two figure skaters.</p><h2>Cheer squad members are picked for their appearance and ideology</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>KIM JAE-HWAN/AFP/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">North Korean cheer leaders perform during the World Students Game welcoming ceremony in Daegu, South Korea, 21 August 2003.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>North Korea's <a href="http://english.cri.cn/12394/2014/07/28/3561s838021.htm">cheer squad</a> is made up of young women, usually around 20 years old, who are university students, at music school, or part of a propaganda squad.</p><p>There is clear criteria for squad members, Kim Gyeong-sung, the South Korean head of the Inter-Korean Athletic Exchange Association, told the <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-42616982">BBC</a>. These are "appearance" and having the right "ideology."</p><p>Background checks are also carried out to ensure members don't harbor pro-Japan or North Korean defectors in their families.</p><p>The squad, has only performed in South Korea three times, in 2002, 2003, and 2005.</p><p>In 2005, one of those cheerleaders in was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-old-is-kim-jong-uns-wife-ri-sol-ju-is-he-married-bio-photos-north-korea-2017-9">Ri Sol-Ju</a>, who is now the wife of Kim Jong Un.</p><p>The North Koreans won't be the only cheer squad at Pyeongchang next month. North Korea is sending its popular cheer squad to the Olympics, suggesting the country has been secretly preparing for months

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Don't expect Tuesday's summit to amount to much.</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>North Korean defector Kim Young-il is the 39-year-old founder of<span> </span><a href="http://pscore.org/">People for Successful Corean Reunification (PSCORE).</a><span> </span>He escaped North Korea at 19 years old.</strong></li><li><strong>Kim said that President Donald Trump's handling of the upcoming summit with North Korea in Singapore on June 12 shows that he understands dictator Kim Jong Un better than South Korean president Moon Jae-In.</strong></li><li><strong>But Kim believes that nothing will change as a result of the summit because Kim Jong Un and the North Korean government have too much to lose by making concessions and opening the country up economically.</strong></li></ul><p>President Donald Trump understands how to handle North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un better than his South Korean counterpart, President Moon Jae-in, but it's unlikely anything significant will come of Tuesday's summit in Singapore, according to North Korean defector Kim Young-il.</p><p>"From the way that Trump talks, it seems like he understands a lot more about North Korea than [South Korean president] Moon Jae-In," Kim told Business Insider during a recent interview. "To me, it seems like Trump understands the characteristics of Kim Jong Un better in terms of how to deal with his personality."</p><p>Kim, the 39-year-old founder of<span> </span><a href="http://pscore.org/">People for Successful Corean Reunification (PSCORE)</a>, escaped North Korea when he was 19 years old. PSCORE is a nonprofit that promotes reunification, raises awareness about human rights issues in North Korea, and helps defectors adjust to life in South Korea.</p><p>Kim said that the back-and-forth over Tuesday's summit - from the initial proposal to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-cancels-singapore-meeting-with-north-korea-kim-jong-un-2018-5">its abrupt cancellation last month</a> to the race to save the talks - demonstrated that Trump understands how to cow North Korea's leader. Kim specifically pointed to Trump's willingness to pull out of the talks in response to aggressive language from members of the North Korean government. </p><p>In the weeks before Trump's initial cancellation, the North Korean government <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-cancel-trump-kim-jong-un-summit-date-2018-5">threatened to cancel the summit</a><span> over joint military exercises between the US and South Korea. In addition, North Korea's <span style="color: #222222;">vice minister of foreign affairs referred to comments made by Vice President Mike Pence as "</span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-44234268">stupid</a><span style="color: #222222;">."</span></span></p><p>"As a person involved in US affairs, I cannot suppress my surprise at such ignorant and stupid remarks gushing from the mouth of the US vice president," Choe Son Hui said in a statement reported by North Korean state <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword>.</p><p>"Whether the US will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision and behavior of the United States," Choi added.</p><p>The summit <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-says-hed-invite-kim-jong-un-to-us-if-summit-goes-well-2018-6">was put back on</a> after a high-ranking North Korean official<span> </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pompeo-and-kim-yong-chol-ate-filet-mignon-tried-to-save-peace-summit-2018-5">visited the US</a><span> in early June </span>and<span> </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kim-jong-un-letter-to-trump-summit-meeting-2018-6">delivered Trump a letter from Kim</a>.</p><h2>Kim, the defector, thinks little will come of the June 12 Summit because North Korea has too much to lose by negotiating</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Kyodo/Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>While Kim, the defector, thinks Trump understands Kim Jong Un better than most, he isn't optimistic that anything will come of Tuesday's talks in Singapore. According to Kim, Kim Jong Un and his government have too much to lose by giving up nuclear weapons and opening up the country to trade. </p><p>"People think, 'Okay, if one day they give up their weapons, another day they will change to a different style of government," said Kim, whose organization helps defectors escape North Korea and China and assists them once they reach South Korea.</p><p>"But the North Korean government can't do that. They can't leave behind the North Korean system."</p><p>The problem, he said - and why North Korea cannot make significant changes to the country - is that the government needs to keep the people starving to maintain power. </p><p>"When people become economically more advanced and have food to fill themselves, they begin to think of human rights and democracy. They start to have more desire for their own rights. But the government wants to stop that from happening," Kim said.</p><p>According to Kim, many experts like to point to China as an example of a country successfully opening up and developing economically without much destabilization. But the key difference between China and North Korea is that China's Communist Party was able to separate itself from crimes committed by previous iterations of the party by bringing in new generations of leaders like Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao.</p><p>North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is inexplicably tied to his father and grandfather. If he and his cohort were to lose power, they would suffer severe consequences from the North Korean people and the international community, said Kim. That makes the stakes for maintaining power much higher.  </p><p>"All the crimes that Kim Il Sung did and all the crimes that Kim Jong Il did, it all falls onto him. It's a direct line. He doesn't have anything to escape to.
