India will join the elite club of powerful air combat missiles by 2016, as estimated by <keyword id="6355142" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>. The 3.8 meter long air-to-air missile, <keyword id="94511" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="astra">Astra</keyword> has been successfully tested of its range nine times from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-Rough-Landing-During-A-Flight-Test-Is-Bad-News-For-Russias-New-Jet/articleshow/21250109.cms">Sukhoi-30MKI</a> fighter jets since last year and next month trials will begin to prove the missile's brains to test the "target lock-on and destroy" capabilities. All the tests will be ready by mid 2016. 
 If Astra is ready, India will join the excl<keyword id="6354458" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="US">us</keyword>ive club which is ruled by four countries till now, US, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indo-Russian-5th-Generation-Fighter-Aircraft-program-Delays-and-the-possible-outcomes/articleshow/47655536.cms">Russia</a>, <keyword id="6354785" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="France">France</keyword> and <keyword id="6355882" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="israel">Israel</keyword> which have developed such 
 
"The Astra missile, with a range from 44 to 60km, is coming up very well. I am confident it will be able to meet the revised project completion date of December 2016," said DRDO chief Dr S Christopher, talking to TOI on Thursday. 
In the upcoming tests the missile will undergo through, it will be armed with terminal radio-frequency seekers but without any warheads or propellants. Then it will be fired in "full configuration" at "actual manoeuvring targets" mimicking enemy fighters. 
 
DRDO says Astra has "excellent" ECCM (electronic counter-counter measures) to tackle jamming by hostile aircraft, active radar terminal guidance and other features for "high single-shot kill probability" in both head-on and tail-chase" mode. 
Astra is a part of the family of sleek missiles capable of detecting, tracking and destroying highly-agile hostile supersonic fighters packed with "counter-measures'' at long ranges.

India’s first air combat missile Astra will be launched soon, sooner than you think

<ul><li>The India-China border issue is reportedly spilling beyond just the eastern Ladakh region.</li><li>The Chinese military has reportedly increased its troops and weaponry along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. </li><li>The increase of military deployment comes amid India and China agreeing to deescalate tensions after diplomatic talks on June 25.</li></ul>In the midst of diplomatic talks and military meetings, India and China claim that they’re working towards de-escalating the tension along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Galwan Valley. However, China is reportedly ramping up its troops and weaponry along the border — not just in Ladakh, but also in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Uttarakhand. People familiar with developments along the border told PTI, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has deployed a significant number of troops at these points. In Eastern Ladakh, the two armies are also locked in a standoff in Demchok, Gogra Hot Spring and Daulat Beg Oldie besides Pangong Tso and Galwan Valley. Reports of military troops building up along the border comes merely a day after diplomatic talks between India and China which concluded with them agreeing to “strictly respect and observe the Line of Actual Control (LAC)” in the Ladakh region. “The Indian side conveyed its concerns on the recent developments in Eastern Ladakh, including on the violent face off in Galwan Valley area on 15th June that had resulted in casualties,” said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a statement. Prior to that China’s Defence Ministry accused India earlier today of trying to unilaterally change the status quo along the India-China border in Galwan Valley. India has finally decided to take forward its negotiations with Russia about the mega projects that were stalled in the past. 
 
As per TNN sources, the talks about jointly developing a futuristic fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) and upgrading the existing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Sukhoi-wants-Tata-to-manufacture-parts-for-SSJ100/articleshow/51026262.cms">Sukhoi</a>- 30MKI jets into 'Super Sukhois' with advanced avionics and weapons have begun amidst India and Russia. 
 
However, India and France are also close to inking a deal worth 7.8 billion euro deal for 36 Rafale jets, but the defence ministry has acknowledged that these 36 fighters will not be enough for India’s air combat power which is on a down track.

 As of now, the <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> just has 33 fighter squadrons, which includes 11 obsolete MiG-21 and MiG-27 squadrons that are up for retirement. However, to safeguard the border from the evil intentions of China and Pakistan, IAF requires at least 42 jets. 
 
The defence ministry is also considering a "multi-pronged strategy" so that it can up its airpower. This includes introducing the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Made-in-India-light-combat-aircraft-Tejas-inducted-in-Air-Force/articleshow/53002316.cms">home-made </a>light combat aircraft, called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/10-things-you-should-definitely-know-about-the-brand-new-Made-in-India-fighter-jet-Tejas/articleshow/53007047.cms">Tejas</a>, and look out for a second line of producing fighter jets in the country, including the American F/A-18, F-16, and Swedish Gripen-E. 
 
Talking of these 5th-generation fighters, the final R&amp;D design contract is almost ready to be inked, for the Indian "perspective multi-role fighter", which is a variant of Sukhoi T-50 or PAK-FA, the Russian single-seat FGFA. 
 
"Apart from resolving technical and cost issues, Russia has also agreed to allow IAF test pilots to fly its prototypes now," a source told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/india-pushes-talks-with-russia-for-5th-generation-fighters-and-super-sukhois/articleshow/53147669.cms">TNN</a>.

The first contract was signed in 2007, which was then followed up in 2010 with a $295 million preliminary design contract. 
 
The contract involves producing 127 such fighters in India would cost about $25 billion. 
 
"The technical requirements should be finalised this year, with the contract being inked next year," said the source.

India begins final talks with Russia over fighter jets and Super Sukhois

To counter the massive construction and development on the Chinese side along the 1800 km border, India is fast equipping itself with sufficient 
 Strategic launch bases in Arunachal Pradesh for the <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> (IAF). This strategic launch base is called an Advance Landing Ground or ALG. 
 
After activating IAF four Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) at Ziro, Along, Mechuka and Walong in Arunachal Pradesh, the IAF on August 19 th made yet another ALG-the 5th in the row in the North East region at Arunachal Pradesh itself. 
 
These ALGs act as transportation hubs during peace time and in case of contingencies like road closure, landslides, conflicts and war like situations the ALGs would act as launch bases for support of troops as well as replenishment of supplies. 
 
The ALGs got an impetus after state government and the forces witnessed massive construction and development on the Chinese side along the 1,080-km border. The area remains a bone of contention between the Indian and Chinese forces where the line of actual control acts as the de facto border. 
 The upgraded Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) at Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh was inaugurated by <keyword id="638723" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kiren-Rijiju">Kiren Rijiju</keyword>, MoS for Home Affairs in the presence of Air Marshal C Hari Kumar AVSM VM VSM, Air Officer Commanding-in-chief (AOC-in-C), Eastern Air Command on August 19. 
 
Apart from serving the strategic advantage, the ALG at Pasighat will facilitate air connectivity with rest of the country and give a huge fillip to tourism in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. 
 
A flypast by a formation of three Sukhoi-30 MKI Air Dominance Fighter aircraft, that took off from one of the forward Airbases was a highlight of the event. This was followed by a Su-30MKI also landing at the ALG. 
 
The touchdown by a frontline fighter jet of the IAF at the ALG is a 'historic first' in the predominantly hilly state of Arunachal Pradesh, which has several ALGs at varying altitudes. 
 
The new runway surface and other infrastructure built are similar to the other upgraded ALGs that have been inaugurated in the recent months. 
 Replete with facilities such as aprons for ground manouevering, <keyword id="735991" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-traffic-control-tower">Air Traffic Control Tower</keyword>, perimeter road and a security wall, the ALG will facilitate operations of fixed wing aircraft as well as helicopters of both civil and military operators. 
 
The ALG at Pasighat was taken over by the IAF in February 2010. Previously, it was small strip that was partly paved, partly grassy, and reinforced with perforated steel plates. It was utilized in the past for air maintenance sorties and casualty evacuation by the IAF. Commercial helicopter operations were also being undertaken from the helipads that existed earlier. 
 The <keyword id="54875" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airports-Authority-of-India">Airports Authority of India</keyword> (AAI) is also the process of setting up a civil terminal, the construction of which has yet to commence. Now the need of the hour is for all agencies to get together and make it happen. 
 It may be recalled that following a MoU between Government of Arunachal Pradesh and <keyword id="6369097" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Defence">Ministry of Defence</keyword> in June 2009, the IAF had embarked on an ambitious reconstruction plan to upgrade eight ALGs, including infrastructure development at an overall outlay of nearly Rs. 1,000 Crore. 
 
Two ALGs at Tuting and Tawang are expected to be ready by the year end, while the ALG at Vijaynagar would undertake for reconstruction as soon as the road connectivity between Miao and Vijaynagar is restored.
