Musk poured millions of dollars into Trump's successful election campaign and has been a vocal and visible supporter of the president-elect. In return, he's been given a new job, in joint charge of the new <keyword id="23593857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Government-Efficiency" source="keywords">Department of Government Efficiency</keyword> (Doge), where he will be tasked with streamlining government operations and reducing bureaucracy. This "department"—actually an advisory group—will aim to cut unnecessary spending and make the general functioning of the US government more efficient. The idea is that within a federal budget of over US$6 trillion, there are opportunities to make some big savings. Musk's appointment—like many things he's involved with—has sparked controversy. The richest man in the world has already said he wants to cut spending by US$2 trillion (£1.6 trillion) and mentioned setting up a "leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars.". Some are concerned about the impact he could have on public services. Others fear he will use his position to promote his own business interests. On the positive side, Musk has a very impressive CV when it comes to big organisations. He has created (or co-created) multi-billion-dollar businesses, including Paypal, <keyword id="19895433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tesla" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Tesla">Tesla</keyword>, and <keyword id="19905255" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpaceX" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SpaceX" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SpaceX">SpaceX</keyword>. He has founded startups involved in AI (xAI), tunnelling (the Boring Company), and medicine (<keyword id="19985233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Neuralink" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Neuralink" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Neuralink">Neuralink</keyword>). And research suggests that much of Musk's success comes down to a relentless focus on efficiency. He has also been praised for the depth of his analytical thinking and innovative problem solving. Tesla's factory in California went from being the least productive car manufacturing plant in the US when it was owned by General Motors to the most productive under Musk's ownership. SpaceX has vastly reduced costs in the space cargo business. So he has form. And Musk is not the first American business leader to offer private sector expertise to the world of politics. Back in the 1960s, Robert McNamara, former president of the Ford Motor Company, served as secretary of defence under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. McNamara brought significant innovations to <keyword id="22668770" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-efficiency" source="keywords">government efficiency</keyword> that drew on his corporate experience. He championed cost-benefit analysis and a data-driven approach to decision-making and was keen on reducing bureaucracy and promoting accountability in complex governmental processes. To achieve this, McNamara recruited a team of experts from the worlds of academia and business. Known as the "Whizz Kids," they brought new perspectives to the White House. In the UK now, the Labour government's minister of state for investment is Poppy Gustafsson, a former venture capitalist and tech founder. Its minister for prisons is James Timpson, former CEO of the Timpson Group, a family firm renowned for hiring ex-offenders. These people—and there are many other examples around the world—were brought into the political sphere because of the knowledge and vision they have demonstrated in the private sector. The hope is their talent and leadership will improve policy and practice. <h2>Data-driven reform</h2>The same must be hoped for Musk: that with his co-leader, Vivek Ramaswamy—a biotech entrepreneur and former Republican leadership candidate—he will bring expertise in cost-cutting and innovative strategies. This will probably include comprehensive audits and data-driven approaches to reform. Critics refer to prior examples of Musk's approach, such as the mass layoffs and aggressive cost-cutting measures at Twitter (now X), with concerns that there could be similarly drastic reductions in the federal workforce and public services. But big job cuts were happening across the tech sector at that time. They came in the wake of reduced revenues and a need to reduce bloated workforces and ineffective functions—not unlike the challenges faced by the US government. Nevertheless, while proponents see Musk as an experienced leader capable of streamlining bureaucracy, sceptics fear the advent of harmful austerity measures that risk disruption to essential public programs. Concerns have also been raised about potential conflicts of interest, as Musk's business empire benefits from government contracts. However, since Doge will operate as an advisory body, concerns over him gaining advantage through any self-dealing seem overblown. Besides, two of Musk's companies (SpaceX and Tesla) have been awarded US$15.4 billion (£12.3bn) in federal contracts in the last decade. Perhaps then, success precedes influence rather than the reverse? Doge will also be governed by the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which maintains legal and ethical guardrails. And Congress will have the final say over any decisions. Fears of the worst possible outcome to Musk's appointment are a natural human response in the face of uncertainty. It is part of the reason that negative headlines get more clicks than positive ones. It is also true that Musk has aligned himself with a politician who divides opinion like few others. By leveraging his billions of dollars and 200 million followers on X to help Trump to victory, he made it clear which side he was on. And in a highly polarised US political landscape, the anguish about his governmental role may be little more than a knee-jerk reaction from the millions of people whose side he did not choose.

She grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where her parents were professors at the local university. After graduating from New York University in 2007, she thought she would work at Goldman Sachs for a few years to save up for graduate school, perhaps to study public policy or become a lawyer. But even when the financial crisis hit, which was an opportune time to go back to school, she didn't want to leave."At Goldman, you are given tremendous responsibility and opportunity young in your career if you prove yourself able," she told Business Insider in an interview. "I've never once been bored, and so it's an easy choice to stay."The 39-year-old is based in Atlanta and runs the Southeast region of Goldman Sach's private wealth division. While wealth management clients skew older, the division has a pipeline of rich millennial founders who work with the investment banking arm. Boals Moeller said these clients in their 30s and 40s are more likely to want more than investment advice, desiring services like concierge healthcare and bill pay that make their lives easier. To keep these clients loyal, she leads an initiative to cater to younger clients, including heirs and self-made entrepreneurs, and another that focuses on women customers."They're busy. They want simplicity. They need good people around them to help," she said.During the dealmaking drought, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-private-wealth-management-asset-david-solomon-2023-1">wealth management</a> business gained new prominence. "Investments are critical and core to our work, but increasingly we're seeing that with the next generation of wealth owners today, they are seeking simplicity and solutions in all aspects of their life."Goldman Sachs' family office offering, Apex, launched a few years later. Now, the division offers chief financial officer services to help clients with not just estate planning but also lifestyle services like cybersecurity.Catering to these younger clients, whether they are old-money heirs or startup founders celebrating their first windfall, requires meeting them where they are. That usually isn't over a steak and martini lunch or 18 holes at the golf course. What entices these clients more, Boals Moeller said, is getting to meet like-minded people.Goldman Sachs holds events and conferences, often with star-studded lineups or in scenic locales. In August, Boals Moeller hosted a reception in Atlanta with singer Ciara and Marc-Kwesi Farrell, the founder of a rum brand that provided custom cocktails. In October 2023, Goldman Sachs hosted a conference in Deer Valley where billionaire Patrón founder John Paul DeJoria talked about keeping a business empire in the family. Sustainability and sports are particularly interesting to this demographic, with Goldman Sachs hosting a tour of a waste-to-clean-energy power plant in Copenhagen and bringing in Michelle Hynik, president of women's football club Utah Royals, to the Deer Valley summit.Advisors also introduce clients to each other when appropriate, such as a pre-IPO founder to an entrepreneur who has already been through the process."A lot of effort is put into helping people not only just manage the risk and obviously the investment side of things, but also the broader piece, which is how do we help you have an amazing corporate outcome from the sale of your business, and how do we help you as a family appropriately prepare for that?" she said.Advisors can meet with families one-on-one for financial education. On Monday, the Pentagon<a target="_blank" href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Transcripts/Transcript/article/3948100/pentagon-deputy-press-secretary-sabrina-singh-holds-an-off-camera-on-the-record/"> said</a> that 10,000 North Korean troops had been shipped to Russia for training and were likely to join Russian forces"over the next several weeks." NATO chief Mark Rutte said that some troops are already in Kursk, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/opinions_230105.htm">calling</a> the move "a significant escalation." He added that it is "yet another" contravention of UN Security Council resolutions. He said the bloc is "actively consulting" on what to do next. Despite these statements — and a similar chorus of condemnation from Western governments — few commitments have been made. Christie, along with other experts BI spoke to, described a hesitancy and fear of escalation among Ukraine's biggest Western partners that amounts to alack of overall strategy. <h2>The West has some options — and a history of slapping them down</h2>When it comes to options for the US and Europe, "the tools are the same tools that have been there all along," Richard Fontaine, CEO of the Center for a New American Security,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com./news/articles/2024-10-28/ukraine-allies-face-limited-options-as-north-korea-troops-arrive?embedded-checkout=true"> told Bloomberg.</a> That includes the ad-hoc trickling through of aid packages like one<a target="_blank" href="https://kyivindependent.com/norways-pm-announces-new-500-million-euro-aid-package-for-ukraine/"> recently announced by Norway</a>. It also includes things that have long been ruled out, like allowing Ukraine to make long-range strikes in Russia with Western-supplied missiles. A bipartisan group in Congress has called on Biden to allow Poland to intercept Russian missiles in Ukrainian airspace, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4960374-biden-poland-air-defense-ukraine/">The Hill reported</a>. It's a move that NATO's former chief Jens Stoltenberg had earlier ruled out, saying it would risk the alliance "becoming part of the conflict," the outlet reported. South Korea, too, has said it is considering sending military aid directly to Ukraine. It's an unprecedented move that could prove highly beneficial, but which the state is hesitant to make,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/south-korea-ukraine-weapons-big-difference-russia-north-korea-2024-10"> experts told BI</a>. Lithuania's foreign minister, Gabrielius Landsbergis, has also revived a suggestion made in February by France's President Emmanuel Macron of not ruling out the deployment of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/french-president-wont-rule-out-sending-troops-ukraine-2024-2">NATO troops in Ukraine</a>, in support roles. "We are still on the back foot, reacting to escalation instead of reversing it,"<a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/GLandsbergis/status/1848006509013225679"> Landsbergis wrote on X</a>. "Macron's ideas should now be revisited." That idea was earlier<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everyone-angry-germany-series-screw-ups-leaks-scholz-macron-ukraine-2024-3"> publicly slapped down</a> by Germany's Chancellor, Olaf Scholz. Such a move "would free up a lot of resources for Ukraine," said Ann Marie Dailey, a geopolitical strategist at RAND. It would also send an important signal to Russia, she said: "That they don't have dominance on the escalation ladder." <h2>The escalation trap</h2>President Joe Biden's administration — along with much of Western Europe — has largely avoided actions that could be seen as escalating the conflict. The fact that now a serious escalation looks possible thanks to North Korea is an indication of the failure of that policy, Christie told BI. The US presidential election and the impending change of administration also puts a chilling effect on any dramatic changes in policy for the coming months, he said. "We live in an age of US-led hesitancy within the Western world, which just keeps on failing us, which just keeps on increasing the level of danger to the security of the collective West," he said. The bind for the Biden administration is not only in dealing with two nuclear states, but also that North Korea's belligerence could cause the conflict to spill over toward its southern neighbor and<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-muted-response-russia-north-korea-alliance-costly-ukraine-economy-2024-10">damage relations with China.</a> Western states are likely to have been quietly hoping that China might step in diplomatically and dissuade North Korea, Christie said. At some point, the West has to react decisively, he argued. Dailey told BI: "The problem with having a strategy of de-escalation is that if that is your stated strategy, you've already ceded every step on the escalation ladder to the enemy." In Bury's view, the West's problem is that it cannot even agree on its broader strategy, let alone decide how to implement it. "The broader point here is: the West, we're not doing the strategy," he said. "We're muddling through."

What can the West do about North Korea giving troops to Russia? Not much it hasn't already flinched from.

Ukrainian forces <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-weakness-ukraine-kursk-shows-big-putin-flaw-remains-expert-2024-10" target="_blank">surged into the southwestern Russian region of Kursk</a> in August, and at the peak of the incursion, they held about 500 square miles. Russia has taken back some territory, but the Ukrainians still hold ground inside. Ukraine's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-did-russia-invade-ukraine-putin-politics-motive-2023-6">fight against Russia's invasion</a> had, prior to the <keyword id="22763182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kursk-incursion" source="keywords">Kursk incursion</keyword>, taken place exclusively on Ukrainian soil, its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-drone-liutyi-behind-majority-ukraine-attacks-russia-oil-facilities-2024-5">long-range drone strikes on military facilities and oil refineries</a> and Black Sea battles aside. Though there are certain advantages to fighting in your home country, the desire to defend as much as possible hinders the ability to be brutally strategic in combat, conflict experts told Business Insider. Michael Bohnert, a warfare expert at the RAND Corporation, said that Ukraine's advantage in Kursk is that "they don't have to defend any of those cities" because they're Russian. "You just fight where it's advantageous and pull back when it's not. And that's a really efficient way of fighting." <h2>A new advantage</h2>Fighting at home, Ukraine's forces have clung to some cities fiercely, battling the Russians for them until they had no other choice but to fall back. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bakhmut-how-ukraine-lost-city-russia-won-hollow-victory-2023-12">Bakhmut</a> is one example, but there have been others as Ukraine focuses its efforts on defending as much territory as possible. <div type="image" title="Destroyed Russian military vehicles in a field." height="3360" width="5040" msid="114814026" hostid="261"></div><keyword id="20549604" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russias-invasion" source="keywords">Russia's invasion</keyword> of Ukraine has been an unusual one, at least as far as major wars go, in that it has largely only taken place on one country's soil, which has put Ukraine at a big disadvantage and often left its troops stuck. But that's no longer the case. <div type="image" title="An aerial view of the city of Bakhmut shows the rubble of remaining buildings" height="1500" width="2000" msid="114814029" hostid="261"></div>Inside Kursk, "they can just take advantage of the terrain, fight in the most efficient way possible, and ultimately they can leave" if they need to protect their forces or equipment or pursue some other objective. And they can do so without repercussions, which is not the case inside Ukraine, Bohnert said. He said of settlements in Kursk that "they're not Ukrainian towns, so they can choose to fight and defend from the most advantageous positions so they can make fortifications. If you're outnumbered, just pull back to the next one." Russia is advancing and taking back territory in Kursk, and it is unclear how Ukraine will ultimately fare against its forces there. William Alberque, a warfare expert at the Stimson Center, said Russia was so far taking "the easy parts to take back" and that "they'll have a much harder time with the rest of the Ukrainian salient." He said that "it's very easy now for Ukraine to do some sort of fighting retreats and cede territory that they could never legitimately hold." Bohnert said "it's going to be very costly for the Russians to take back" because Ukraine can now "pick when and where they defend." Ukraine has signaled that its Kursk operations are aimed at seizing territory it could trade in negotiations, but there are other advantages to the fighting there. Matthew Savill, a <keyword id="21659783" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="military-strategy" source="keywords">military strategy</keyword> expert at the Royal United Services Institute think tank and a former intelligence analyst at the UK Ministry of Defence, previously told BI, that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-may-seek-to-bleed-russia-troops-in-kursk-expert-2024-9">a Ukrainian motivation to hold territory in Kursk may be the idea</a> that "if they set themselves up in a strong defense, they can effectively bleed the Russians." Alberque said that in Kursk, Ukraine can ask itself: "Where can we actually defend? What are the good places to really fight the Russians?" Ukraine can create "kill zones" and "traps to slow Russia down," he said. "They don't have to defend the entire salient." <h2>Less need to defend</h2>Looming over Ukraine's military at home is the threat that Russia will keep any territory they capture indefinitely. Russia has been holding territory like Crimea since 2014 while Russian-backed separatists have been trying to tighten their grip in the Donbass. Russia has already declared that area a part of its sovereign territory and clearly intends to keep it. But Ukraine doesn't need to worry about what happens to the territory they give up in Russia, and that allows it to approach war in this area differently. It's unclear to what extent Ukraine is taking advantage of the possibility, but it's there. <div type="image" title="A pair of Ukrainian soldiers standing in front of a brick building in Russia." height="683" width="1024" msid="114814028" hostid="261"></div>"It's a huge operational advantage for a commander, where you don't have to draw any lines in the sand, Alberque said. When choosing where to defend in Ukraine, Ukrainian forces are '"not only looking at terrain, they're not only looking at defendable positions, but they're also looking at the symbolism of different villages that are Ukrainian, that have Ukrainian citizens, that have deep, deep roots in Ukrainian history," he said. "The demoralization of losing a Ukrainian village is entirely different than giving up a Russian village that the Ukrainians don't care about at all," Alberque said. The answer was probably not.So we made a transformation plan to become the first fully AI-integrated global PR agency by the start of 2026. By fully integrated, we mean that every employee, regardless of role, specialty, or seniority, will benefit from AI's assistance.That's a lot of change in a short time, and my role spun out of that ambition. We've created a solution for influencer vetting. Using AI, we can analyze up to 10 years' worth of an influencer's online presence to identify potential risks. Before, that was both time-consuming and less thorough.We also use <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-surveillance-detects-emotion-at-work-gets-you-fired-2023-11">AI for emotive content testing</a>. Traditionally, content testing involved expensive and time-consuming focus groups. Now we use AI and facial-recognition technology to gauge real-time emotional reactions to content that hasn't been published yet.Does Golin have an engineering team on staff to develop these solutions?We have developers, but we're not a technology company. Our strategy is to work with the best partners out there.However, we're adding depth in areas like data science and data architecture because there's immense opportunity in leveraging the data we generate daily. We're hiring in these areas to better synthesize data and make more informed decisions with AI assistance.Importantly, we're not trying to replace people with server farms. Instead of AI and automation for everything, we're at intelligence augmentation. What our clients really want is a great human partner.There's a lot of interest in AI, but also a lot of criticism. How does Golin balance excitement with caution, especially with clients more wary of AI?It's evolving, and it reminds me of the early days of digital or social media. Some clients are eager to move fast, while others take a wait-and-see approach.What's different with AI is the speed at which clients have moved from being inspired to focusing on application. They want to see results, not promises.Each client is different in their appetite for AI, but many realize that if they don't embrace it, they <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ai-extended-reality-disrupting-changing-technology-industry-2023-8">risk being left behind</a>.From a business perspective, where are you looking to see the return on investment with AI?We are focused on efficacy more than efficiency.With clients, our primary metrics are improved outcomes. Under strong leadership, companies can foster a culture of trust, empowering teams to solve problems creatively and drive growth. <h2>Nurturing the intrapreneurial spirit</h2>One of the key components of successful intrapreneurship is providing employees with a sense of ownership and autonomy. This approach taps into the vast potential within the workforce, unlocking creativity that might otherwise remain dormant in a traditional corporate structure. It encourages risk-taking and creative problem-solving, boosting innovation and enhancing employee engagement and satisfaction. Skunk Works’ autonomy has resulted in numerous aerospace innovations, including stealth technology and fighter jets. These examples underscore the transformative potential of intrapreneurial freedom, where exploration leads to groundbreaking products and industry-shifting advancements. By giving employees space to explore ideas beyond their day-to-day tasks, organisations tap into a wealth of innovation, allowing intrapreneurs to flourish. <h2>The essence of intrapreneurship</h2>Innovation requires trial and error, and not every idea will succeed. The best environments for intrapreneurship are those that embrace failure as part of the learning process. Companies like Intel and Tesla have thrived by viewing setbacks as growth opportunities. In the 1980s, Intel faced a major crossroads when internal innovators identified a larger market opportunity and advocated for a shift from memory chips to microprocessors. They embraced potential failure with this pivot, which though risky, propelled Intel to become a leader in the tech industry. Tesla, known for its continuous drive for innovation, encourages its teams to experiment and push boundaries. Elon Musk’s willingness to accept failures along the path to innovation has led to significant breakthroughs, like the development of electric vehicles and space exploration technology. <h2>Collaboration: The key to creative synergy</h2>Intrapreneurs don’t work in isolation. True innovation happens when employees collaborate across departments, combining different skills and perspectives to tackle complex challenges IBM’s Watson, a cognitive computing system, is a prime example of what can happen when cross-functional teams come together. Engineers, data scientists, and non-technical staff worked collaboratively to create a groundbreaking technology that has since been used in fields ranging from healthcare to finance. Facebook’s famous "hackathons" foster cross-departmental innovation. These 24-hour events allow employees to work on passion projects outside of their usual responsibilities, resulting in successful product features like the "Like" button. Ignite the fire of innovation: The intrapreneurship advantage

The ethnic group with the highest concentration of professional workers in the UK is Indian and considering <keyword id="21981222" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ethnic-minorities" source="keywords">ethnic minorities</keyword> as a monolithic group for public policy purposes is now increasingly meaningless in the country, a new think-tank analysis concludes on Monday. 'A Portrait of Modern Britain: Ethnicity and Religion' published by the <keyword id="23544970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Policy-Exchange" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Policy Exchange" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Policy Exchange">Policy Exchange</keyword> reflects an in-depth examination of the demographic, educational, health and economic situation of different ethnic groups in the country. The report calls for a new government-led <keyword id="23544966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-integration-strategy" source="keywords">national integration strategy</keyword>, with children in Britain taught to be proud of their national heritage in an inclusive manner that reflects the country's history and traditions. "The ethnic group with the highest concentration of professional workers was Indian - with British Indians also having the highest rate of home ownership - with 71 per cent living in a property which is either owned outright or owned with a mortgage/loan or shared ownership," the report notes. "The diversity contained with the term 'ethnic minority' is now so broad - both within each minority and between minorities - that considering ethnic minorities as a monolithic group for public policy purposes is now increasingly meaningless," it states. "Categories such as 'South Asian' do not only serve to mask over noteworthy economic and social disparities between Britain's Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis - but also mean that very real forms of diversity within these sizeable groupings at times go unrecognised," it cautions. The report analyses the <keyword id="23544967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="2021-UK-Census" source="keywords">2021 UK Census</keyword> data and other statistical resources, combining this with polling conducted by Redfield and Wilton. Besides a nationally representative sample of 2,000 people of all ethnicities, "booster" samples were used of 1,400 ethnic minority respondents - 200 each from the Black African, Black Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese and Mixed-Race ethnic groups. "These days, integration won't happen naturally... Recent years have seen conflicts generated far away from our shores break out on our streets. The politics of the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East for example are no longer 'quarrels in a faraway country between people of whom we know nothing'," Sir Trevor Phillips, senior fellow at Policy Exchange, says in his foreword. "Policy Exchange's portrait of our nation teaches us one thing above all: our future rests on managing our diversity, and complacency is the surest pathway to the growth of extremism and conflict," he concludes. Among the key findings of the analysis was that almost three in four people - 72 per cent of those polled - believe that children should be taught to be proud of <keyword id="23544969" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="British-history" source="keywords">British history</keyword>, with a majority also believing that Britain has historically been a force for good in the world. "Government agencies should also commit to disaggregating larger groups which are both ethnically and religiously diverse, as well as being far from homogeneous in terms of migratory background - especially the Indian and Black African ethnic categories," it recommends. The think-tank points out that the first 'Portrait of Modern Britain' was carried out for Policy Exchange in 2014 by two young researchers including one named <keyword id="19906889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishi-Sunak" source="keywords">Rishi Sunak</keyword>, who would go on to become the UK's first Prime Minister of Indian heritage and is currently the interim Opposition Leader in Parliament. The new project aims to identify how governments can successfully focus on what unites the different ethnicities of the country to build on the latent strengths of an integrated British identity and culture.
