Unavailability there could cause shuttering of production plants, potentially furloughs and layoffs," Chan said.Detailed below are the biggest winners and losers of the situation, along with other companies that will be impacted to a lesser degree.<h2 id="bb9e7a39-dfd3-42d3-aec4-ad100d960810">Biggest winners</h2>The international air cargo business of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ups-stock">UPS</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/fdx-stock">FedEx</a> is the clear winner of the ILA port strike, as high-value goods will be shifted to airfreight to avoid the backed-up ports."Air cargo essentially is the only clear beneficiary we can see in this situation. It's essentially the only way to move products in country and bypass the ports," Chan explained, adding that there isn't much capacity to divert ships to ports on the West Coast or in Canada.He added: "There really are not a whole lot of options in terms of a plan B here other than air cargo," Chan said.Investors are already catching on to this dynamic, with shares of UPS and FedEx both rising 6% in the past week."We think the most direct beneficiary of a strike situation would likely be international airfreight capacity providers like FedEx and UPS, which have significant operating leverage to Express operations," Chan said in a note over the weekend.<h2 id="b875b888-0b77-451e-9d75-2651d2e6b270">Other winners</h2>As companies seek alternative routes to transport their goods, logistic networks can see an increase in volumes.Shares of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/chrw-stock">C.H. Robinson Worldwide</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/expd-stock">Expeditors International of Washington</a> have seen gains of 4% and 5% in the past week, respectively, as investors anticipate increased business due to the port strike.<h2 id="9bc29b04-9899-4dbb-9d3f-0d0cf8831653">Biggest losers</h2>The biggest losers, so far, appear to be shipping container companies that are directly exposed to the port strike.Shares of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/zim-stock">ZIM Integrated Shipping Services</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cmre-stock">Costamare</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/gsl-stock">Global Ship Lease</a> dropped 7%, 2%, and 2% on Tuesday, respectively.Ultimately, Chan sees the port strike lasting about two weeks, with a lot of it hinging on how the Biden administration responds."I think a lot is going to depend obviously on the political situation and the willingness of the Biden administration to intervene here, but our base case is about two weeks," Chan told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday.Biden, who is known to be very pro-union, has resisted calls to enact the Taft-Hartley Act, which would force port employees back to work while the negotiate a contract."There's collective bargaining, and I don't believe in Taft-Hartley," Biden said on Monday.<h2 id="94183ca9-b0db-438c-8537-399af0c79994">Other losers</h2>A lot of goods movers concentrated on the east coast could see decreased volumes as goods stop moving into the port.That means railroads and trucking companies with significant exposure to the east coast could take a hit."With respect to the rails, there are clearly some near-term headwinds to both East Coast rails CSX and NSC," Chan said, adding that West Coast railroad operators are unlikely to see a big benefit."We see this as a small headwind with no real winners among the rails," Chan said.Other potential losers, if the strike is drawn out for an extended period of time, are retailers like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/wmt-stock">Walmart</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cost-stock">Costco</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tgt-stock">Target</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/hd-stock">Home Depot</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/low-stock">Lowe's</a>, as they may struggle to replenish their shelves with certain goods.

Strategists from Goldman Sachs, UBS, BMO, and Deutsche Bank have raised their year-end price targets on the S&amp;P 500 in recent weeks as the benchmark index continues to hit record highs. On Monday, it notched its 46th all-time high of 2024. UBS strategists Jonathan Golub and Patrick Palfrey upped their 5,600 price target to 5,850 for the end of the year, marking their fourth upgrade since late last year.The target is just slightly above the level the index is trading at on Wednesday, but the analysts forecast a 9% rise in the next 15 months and raised their target for 2025 from 6,000 to 6,400 in a note on Tuesday. Earlier this month, meanwhile, Goldman Sachs raised its target on the index to 6,000 by December, marking the fourth increase since late last year. The call, from the firm's chief equity strategist David Kostin, is the second highest among those tracked by Bloomberg.Kostin said the estimates were driven by a steady macro outlook and greater margin expansion."The primary driver of the upward revision to our 2025 EPS estimate is greater margin expansion," Kostin said, adding, "The macro backdrop remains conducive to modest margin expansion, with prices charged outpacing input cost growth."Kostin's price target is just behind that of BMO's chief equity strategist, Brian Belski, who raised his forecast from 5,600 to 6,100 last month. Belski's new target implies a nearly 5% gain through the rest of this year.Belski said his upgrade was based on strong market gains so far this year, which he says typically leads to stronger-than-normal gains in the fourth quarter."We continue to be surprised by the strength of market gains and decided yet again that something more than an incremental adjustment was warranted," Belski said in a note.He added that Federal Reserve easing and a broadening market rally will only help fuel further gains.Deutsche Bank also raised its year-end target for the S&amp;P 500 last month, up to 5,750 from 5,500. The bank's strategists pointed to strong corporate earnings and inflows, rising stock buybacks, and higher risk sentiment."We see S&amp;P 500 earnings growth continuing to run robustly in the low double digits, in line with typical growth rates outside of recessions," the strategists said in a note.The strategists' target raises come amid a chorus of strategists turning decidedly more upbeat on the market. Foreign investors have withdrawn nearly Rs 20,000 crore from Indian stock markets in just five trading days (November 4–8), continuing a trend of large-scale selling that began last month. Experts say investors are now moving their money to China, largely due to the high valuations presently prevailing in Indian markets. In early November, FPIs have offloaded as much as Rs 19,994 crore in Indian markets. The month prior, i.e., October, was one of the worst months in terms of foreign outflows, with FPIs making a net withdrawal of Rs 94,017 crore. Before this, Indian markets faced such a situation during the pandemic, when FPIs withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. <h2>Why Are Investors Leaving? </h2>According to Himanshu Srivastava of Morningstar Investment Research India, two main factors are driving this exodus. First is China's renewed appeal due to lower stock valuations and new economic stimulus measures. In a bid to nudge the domestic economy and bail state governments, China recently approved a 10-trillion yuan (US $1.4 trillion) package. Per reports, approximately 60% of this stimulus focuses on allowing local governments to refinance the mountain of debt on them. Srivastava explains foreign investors are also flocking to US dollar and Treasury yields, which have appreciated significantly in the recent past, leading FPIs to anticipate a stronger US economy going ahead. Moreover, high valuations in Indian markets are discouraging foreign investors from putting more money in the economy. As a result, over the past week, the selling pressure eroded Rs 74,563 crore in market value for Reliance Industries, while Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank lost Rs 26,274 crore and Rs 22,254 crore, respectively. The combined market valuation of six of the top 10 most-valued firms dipped by Rs 1,55,721.12 crore last week. <h2> Silver linings</h2>Despite the ongoing outflux of funds since last month, November also saw unprecedented applications of about 40–50 new FPI registrations, which are eyeing to enter the Indian market. This was due to markets SEBIs recent relaxation to NRIs, permitting them to participate up to 100% and announcing measures for ease of entry and operations in India. On the other hand, FPIs invested Rs 599 crore in the debt general limit and Rs 2,896 crore in the debt voluntary retention route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs have invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market. <li class="whitespace-normal break-words"></li>Going ahead, investors will be looking for certain macroeconomic cues, which include corporate earnings reports, India's inflation (CPI) and industrial production (IIP) data on November 12, the US inflation report on November 13, and wholesale price index (WPI) data on November 14.

Trump has criticized the search giant over the years, so his election would seem to be negative for the company. Parent Alphabet owns autonomous driving company Waymo, which could get a boost, while even small signs of lighter antitrust enforcement might help the company."Self-driving car regulation may be loosened, and investors may hope DOJ pressure could ease," Stefan Slowinski, a BNP Paribas Exane analyst, wrote in a note to investors after Trump's win.<h2 id="129c6728-940b-4ba4-b955-84c2446c0f42">Meta overhang?</h2>Meta shares have not performed that well in this period. Trump is not a fan of Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO. Meta "risks seeing a political overhang emerge," Slowinski wrote."Trump has long expressed personal animosity against Big Tech, which he sees as being in the bag for the Democratic party, and towards Meta in particular, thanks to the money CEO Mark Zuckerberg donated to voting initiatives in 2020 that Trump believes financed Democratic get-out-the-vote operations," Thompson wrote in Stratechery.<h2 id="a95cddcb-34e5-4f71-9e59-c2c38dba5a2e">'Shock absorber for the consumer'</h2>Slowinski highlighted other Big Tech stocks this week in his note to investors. "Amazon may also now see an overhang as 60% Chinese tariffs, as proposed by the President elect, could pressure margins in North America as Amazon reprises its role as 'the shock absorber for the consumer'," the analyst wrote. As for Microsoft, Slowinsky wrote that it "appears the most un-impacted by politics and new policies near term."

Still, investors should wait to scoop up tech names at better prices, he said."I'd prefer to pick these plays up at better prices than we have today because this last melt-up has eaten enough into future expected returns to keep us cautious for now. But we would be an avid buyer on any significant pullback."Safe betsInvestors should look to put a "dose of insurance" in their portfolios. That means gold — the "truest store of value," Rosenberg says, — as well as government bonds."The beautiful thing about gold is that it is not a liability that a central bank can simply have forgiven or a currency that can simply be printed by government fiat," he said of the precious metal. "I also favor the Treasury market because it commands just about the highest yield of any major industrial country – and with the great liquidity attributes."Real estate investment trusts could also be good ways to hedge risk, Rosenberg said. That particularly applies to REITs tied to the industrial and healthcare sectors. "In any event, we all have to become increasingly thematic and thoughtful in our decision-making and more selective than normal because the stock market, and financial assets in general, have become nothing more than a momentum casino," he added.Most forecasters on Wall Street still expect a strong performance from equities into year-end and 2025.
