<p>The departed used to appear on Amazon's list of top corporate officers, but they've recently gone missing, AllThingsD's Tricia Duryee noticed, in a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130206/amazons-executive-team-is-shrinking/">neat bit of sleuthing through SEC filings</a>.</p>
<p>Here's who's gone and what happened to them:</p>

<p>It's not clear what Gunningham's role is with the company. We did notice that Gunningham, who joined Amazon in 2007, <a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/t/15/7373.html">sold about 80 percent of his Amazon stock</a> in March 2011, right around the four-year anniversary with the company, netting $11 million. Tech companies typically grant stock awards that vest over four-year periods.</p>
<p>Kessel, Onetto, and Gunningham are still <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=97664&amp;p=irol-govmanage">listed as officers on Amazon's investor relations page</a>. They and Wilson do not appear in Amazon's <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=97664&amp;p=IROL-secToc&amp;TOC=aHR0cDovL2FwaS50ZW5rd2l6YXJkLmNvbS9vdXRsaW5lLnhtbD9yZXBvPXRlbmsmaXBhZ2U9ODY4MDk1Nw%3d%3d&amp;ListAll=1&amp;sXBRL=1">most recently filed 10-K report</a>.</p><p class="tagline">Disclosure: Jeff Bezos is an investor in Business Insider through his

Amazon's Executives Are Disappearing

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6357385" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="florida">Florida</keyword> is experiencing its most devastating COVID-19 surge yet, fueled by the Delta variant.</li><li>Hospitals are being stretched to the brink once again, with mounting wait times and limited oxygen.</li><li>More than a year on, doctors and medical workers told Insider about the toll this fight is exacting.</li></ul><p>Ed Jimenez was walking down the hall of the University of Florida <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">Health</keyword> Shands Hospital recently when he ran into a nurse on staff.</p><p>The unrelenting <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword> has made it hard at times for Jimenez - CEO of the teaching hospital in Gainesville which counts more than 1,000 beds - to sustain morale among his workforce.</p><p>"Everybody I talked to was putting up a wonderful exterior: 'We got this. We're helping people,'" he recounted in an interview this week with Insider.</p><p>Still, he could see the anguish behind their eyes. The nurse reminded him of what has become one of the pandemic's most sobering scenes.</p><p>"When we're on that path to where somebody's not going to make it, we go get the family, so at least they can say goodbye through the glass window," she told him. </p><p>An explosion in the virus' highly-transmissible Delta variant has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-covid-19-cases-jumped-50-percent-surges-2021-7">mired the state</a> in its most vicious fight with the disease in recent weeks. Florida has become the epicenter of a new wave of infections in the US, and its vaccination rate is far short of states like Connecticut and New York.</p><p>On Saturday, nearly 24,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Florida, the <a href="https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#cases_all-rate">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a> said, marking an all-time one-day high for the state. An additional 93 people died, and more than 13,000 people were <a href="https://www.fox13news.com/news/florida-reports-23903-new-covid-19-cases-93-deaths-13348-hospitalizations-saturday">hospitalized</a>.</p><p>For comparison, the state reported just 1,250 new infections <a href="http://ww11.doh.state.fl.us/comm/_partners/covid19_report_archive/cases-monitoring-and-pui-information/state-report/state_reports_latest.pdf">on June 1</a>.</p><p>A spokesperson for the UF Health Shands Hospital told Insider that, as of Saturday, the facility had admitted 204 COVID-19 patients. Forty-four were receiving ICU treatment.</p><p>Baptist Health, a system of 11 hospitals, counted 810 COVID-19 patients as of Friday, a representative confirmed, which is a 97% increase from two weeks ago.</p><p>Intensive care units in Florida are filling up, and final moments with loved ones, separated by face shields and glass barriers, have become a resurgent reality. </p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">'You just emotionally break'</strong></h2><p>Insider interviewed seven doctors, hospital leaders, and local government officials, to understand how they're responding to the situation.</p><p>Steve Kessel, a South Florida cardiologist at Palm Beach Medical Center and Jupiter Medical Center, said that some frontline doctors have found themselves burning precious time quibbling with sick patients who are still adamant that they were right to forego the vaccine. It's producing exasperation and even anger among medical providers, he said.</p><p>At one South Florida hospital, some <keyword id="8764262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid">COVID</keyword> patients have had to wait in the triage area for up to a day since no ICU beds were immediately available, said a doctor in the area who requested not to be identified as they were unauthorized to speak to the media.</p><p>Jimenez of the UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville focused on another growing sentiment among some doctors and nurses: depletion.</p><p>"Humanly, you break at some point," Jimenez said. "You just emotionally break."</p><h2>'If you lose that bet, you could die'</h2><p>About half of adults in Florida (50.8%) are fully vaccinated, according to data from <a href="https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/region/us/florida">Johns Hopkins University</a>. The Delta variant is preying upon the roughly half of adults in the state who aren't.</p><p>"It's certainly been frustrating to know that we have really excellent preventative measures at this point. We're so lucky to have a vaccine," said David Wein, chief of emergency medicine at Tampa General Hospital. "That adds, perhaps, to some of the frustration - that it's just not being accessed and utilized to its fullest."</p><p>Jimenez said he's heard of some patients pleading to be vaccinated after they've fallen ill. "The saddest ones obviously are the ones that are in the ICU," he said. "It's clearly way too late."</p><p>Paul Schwartz, a South Florida physician, has detected something else: continued defiance among some about the severity of the illness.</p><p>A recent conversation with a venture-capitalist friend left him especially puzzled. The investor was bullish that "his odds of acquiring COVID are relatively small, and of dying of COVID are infinitesimally small," Schwartz said.</p><p>"My comment to him was: 'That's an all-in bet,'" the physician added. "If you lose that bet, you could die."</p><h2>High numbers of patients are creating backlogs</h2><p>With the number of COVID patients skyrocketing, it's not just emergency medical systems which are being taxed, said Barry Burton, the county administrator who leads local government operations for Pinellas County, which counts nearly 1 million residents on the state's west coast.</p><p>The situation "has taxed our <keyword id="6354525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="healthcare">healthcare</keyword> system, our emergency rooms, our ambulances, and our fire rescue, because it all works as a system," he told Insider.</p><p>The county's ambulance system used to be able to do a patient transfer to a hospital in about 15 minutes.</p><p>But backups at county hospitals are forcing patients to sit, waiting in ambulances, for hour-long stretches or more when they arrive, Burton said, taking those emergency units out of commission. New patients have to wait longer at home to be picked up, or the fire department has to pitch in to run transfers.</p><p>Meanwhile, hospitals are confronting a nationwide <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nurses-are-considering-leaving-the-profession-after-covid-19-pandemic-2021-5">shortage of nurses.</a></p><p>Kevin Taylor, the emergency room director at Baptist Health's two Bethesda Hospital locations in Boynton Beach, said that nurses on staff are making up for the lack of reinforcements by volunteering for extra shifts. </p><p>"You do worry about the strain, and there is fatigue," he said. </p><h2>Overwhelmed hospitals have begun diverting patients elsewhere</h2><p>Jimenez of the UF Health Shands Hospital told Insider that his hospital has rescheduled some elective surgeries until next week to ensure that enough ICU beds remain available.<br /><br />Simultaneously, some hospitals' oxygen capacities have been besieged by a sudden, increased demand for emergency care.</p><p>Last week, Putnam Community Medical Center, a 99-bed medical facility in the city of Palatka, had to divert some patients to the nearby North Florida Regional Medical Center, which has 523 beds, in order to deal with a patient overload.</p><p>The two hospitals are located within bordering Putnam and Alachua Counties, respectively. Like the rest of the state, Alachua County has experienced a <a href="https://dashboards.alachuacounty.us/COVID19/">sharp upswing in cases</a> since the early summer. Its vaccination rate, while not quite stalled, has gone from just 56% in mid-June to 61% as of early August.</p><p>A spokesperson for HCA North Florida, which counts both hospitals as affiliates, confirmed in an email to Insider that North Florida Regional Medical Center had accepted patients last week from Putnam Community Medical Center and other hospitals in the area. <br /><br />In turn, North Florida Regional Medical Center's oxygen capacity measurement tool signaled that it should halt accepting additional patients from nearby facilities, given that it was approaching its upper threshold. </p><p>The larger hospital implemented a "proactive decision" to divert patients elsewhere, lessening the strain on its oxygen systems, the spokesperson added.</p><h2>Even more difficult times could lie ahead</h2><p>As ominous as the situation appears now, some Florida doctors worry it could escalate, particularly with schools reopening in the coming week.</p><p>Florida governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, previously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/desantis-signs-bill-block-school-mask-mandates-2021-7">issued an executive order</a> prohibiting schools from requiring students to wear masks in the classroom. But on Saturday, Mike Burke, the superintendent of <keyword id="1362260" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Palm-Beach-County">Palm Beach County</keyword> public schools, told families in a letter that he <a href="https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story/news/education/2021/08/07/palm-beach-county-students-must-wear-masks-unless-parents-provide-note/5525760001/">would require</a> them nonetheless, unless parents specifically opt their child out.</p><p>Facial coverings may not be enough to prevent future <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> mutations that could thwart vaccines - a scenario that Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-covid-19-could-few-mutations-away-from-evading-vaccines-2021-7">warned about</a> last month. Such a scenario could push already strained hospitals over the edge.</p><p>Ultimately, Floridians themselves will be the arbiters of what happens next, Kessel, the cardiologist, said. </p><p>He lamented that misinformation about vaccines was partly responsible for upending the state's public health efforts, likening dangerous urban legends to "superstitions."</p><p>"If we were still believing in superstitions," he said, "we'd still be using leeches and witch doctors to cure people."</p><p><em>This story has been updated to include additional details about emergency care at North Florida Regional Medical Center and Putnam Community Medical Center.</em></p>

The store's cameras and sensors will see what you take and charge you accordingly." </p><p>Amazon has opened 10 Amazon Go stores across the US. Bloomberg reported in 2018 that the company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/report-amazon-wants-3000-amazon-go-stores-by-2021-2018-9">hopes to open up to 3,000 cashierless Amazon Go stores by 2021. </a></p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-stores-threatened-by-cashless-trend-2019-3">Cities and states around the country are banning stores from refusing to accept cash, and it's a troubling trend for Amazon</a></em></p><p>Cashless stores have become increasingly trendy, with fast-casual chains such as Sweetgreen and Dig Inn requiring customers to pay via card or app. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sweetgreen-goes-cashless-2016-12">According to executives,</a> banning cash can speed up service, protect against robberies, and allow companies to collect more customer data. </p><p>However, critics say that cashless stores effectively exclude millions of potential customers who do not have a bank account. 8.4 million households, or roughly 6.5% of all households in America, were "unbanked" in 2017, <a href="https://www.fdic.gov/householdsurvey/">according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation</a>. </p><p>Amazon's apparent change of heart comes as more states and cities consider banning cashless stores. He's known to be close with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, as he was <a href="http://www.geekwire.com/2015/amazon-svp-steve-kessel-returns-sabbatical-work-super-secret-project/">one of the 10 people who directly reported to him</a> before leaving for a sabbatical in 2012.</p><p>In early 2015, Kessel returned to Amazon, but his role has been unclear until now. Re/code says he's been working on this project secretly for a long time.</p><p>Amazon's retail ambitions were first revealed in November 2015 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-opens-a-physical-store-called-amazon-books-2015-11">when it opened its first brick-and-mortar bookstore</a> in downtown Seattle.</p><p>Aside from the bookstore, Kessel's team is also planning to open physical stores that sell things other than books, although it's unclear what they will be. Another idea it's testing is a store without a payments gateway, allowing the customer to pay with a smartphone app instead.</p><p>Amazon is planning to open a new bookstore in Southern California, based on the job listings spotted by Re/code. One of the jobs says it'll be in <span>La Jolla or San Diego, the report said.</span></p><p><span>The news comes on the heels of a report that said Amazon could soon open 300 to 400 additional bookstores. He is now in charge of some of Amazon's most ambitious projects, including the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-history-suggests-one-day-delivery-to-boost-revenue-growth-2020-1">one-day shipping initiative</a> and Prime Air drone delivery program. At the same time, he has to manage Amazon's spending in major investment areas, like physical stores and warehouses, while addressing concerns around worker safety and product compliance.</p><p>The added responsibilities follow the departure of Steve Kessel, the former SVP of physical stores who announced his resignation late last year. Most of Kessel's direct reports, like VP of physical stores Dilip Kumar and Whole Foods CEO John Mackey, have moved over to Clark's group as a result. The teams run by Neil Lindsay, VP of Prime and marketing, and Gur Kimchi, VP of Prime Air, have been reassigned to Clark's team earlier last year. Kimchi reports up to Brad Porter, VP of Robotics Strategy. Kara Hurst, Amazon's head of worldwide sustainability, is also organizationally under Clark.</p><p>"Dave is a 20-plus year Amazonian who wakes up every day considering how we can best serve customers," Amazon's spokesperson told Business Insider. He was promoted to SVP of worldwide operations in 2013, and was soon recruited to Bezos's secretive group of top advisors called the "S-team." </p><p>The Georgia-native grew up in an entrepreneurial household. He learned how to drive a forklift when he was 12-years old to help his parent's business, and in high school, worked at a Publix supermarket. A music major at Auburn University, Clark got through school in part by working as the equipment and logistics person for the music department. He was so excited about his first job at Amazon that he flew to Seattle the day after graduating from University of Tennessee-Knoxville's MBA program.</p><p>Clark is known for his tough management style and meticulous demands, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-12-17/amazon-holiday-shopping-the-man-who-makes-it-happen">a recent report by Bloomberg</a>. His reputation of quickly firing underperforming warehouse workers has earned him the nickname "The Sniper," the report said. During last year's holiday season, for example, his team temporarily cut ties with FedEx, citing low performance. Amazon's spokesperson told Business Insider that the company is not aware of The Sniper nickname. </p><p>Clark's biggest task this year is the rollout of Amazon's one-day delivery program. The company invested roughly $3 billion last year in shortening its standard delivery time from two days to one day, causing investor concerns around the hefty spending. Amazon now handles <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-package-delivery-business-growth-2019-12">more than half of all package deliveries</a>, and is <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazons-newest-ambitioncompeting-directly-with-ups-and-fedex-1474994758">rumored</a> to have ambitions to eventually compete with the services by FedEx and UPS. At Amazon's internal <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/full-transcript-leaked-amazon-november-2019-internal-all-hands-meeting-2019-12">all-hands meeting in December</a>, Clark said he's most excited about the changes new technologies like automation could bring in the transportation space.</p><p>"I think by the time you look out three to five years, the way our transportation infrastructure operates is going to be pretty radically different than the way traditional transportation infrastructure works," Clark said, according to a recording of the event obtained by Business Insider.</p><h1>'Customer obsession'</h1><p>Clark's long list of responsibilities makes his team one of the largest at Amazon - and a difficult one to manage. </p><p>Teams under Clark have been subject to a number of controversies in recent years. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-unsafe-working-conditions-warehouses-fulfillment-centers-2019-11">Worker safety</a> at Amazon's warehouses and delivery services are perennial issues that surface almost every year. Some of the pilots that ship Amazon packages have also recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-air-pilots-protest-company-shareholder-meeting-for-new-contract-2019-5">staged public protests</a> over low wages and poor working conditions. Amazon's loose standards over product safety and compliance, meanwhile, have drawn <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazon-has-ceded-control-of-its-site-the-result-thousands-of-banned-unsafe-or-mislabeled-products-11566564990">increased press and regulatory scrutiny</a> in the past year. And last month, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/01/26/amazon-employees-plan-mass-defiance-company-communications-policy-support-colleagues/">a group of employees criticized</a> the company's record on climate change and sustainability efforts.</p><p>The growing number of robots in Amazon warehouses - now exceeding 200,000 worldwide - has caused some employees to worry about losing their jobs to automation. Clark addressed those concerns at a 2017 internal all-hands meeting, saying Amazon would need to continue hiring a lot of people "in the foreseeable future" across its fulfillment centers, customer service, and transportation network, in order to keep up growth.</p><p>"We're going to continue to drive efficiencies as we have since the very first day we started operations," Clark said, according to a recording of the event obtained by Business Insider. "But there's going to continue to be room for awesome employees doing great things for customers for many, many years to come." </p><p>While Clark has a good sense of humor and is considered a personable leader, he rarely goes off-script during all-hands meetings, sticking to party line answers when responding to sensitive employee questions. In many cases, he simply repeats Bezos's famous business mantras, like customer obsession. </p><p>Perhaps that's one reason why he's earned the trust of the company. Those executives who are so absorbed in Bezos's business philosophy and are able to recite them at will are internally called "Jeff Bots" for their loyalty and devotion to the company, according to Brad Stone's book, "The Everything Store."</p><p>That characteristic was reflected in Clark's comment during the 2018 all-hands meeting, when an employee asked what warehouse workers should tell themselves every day before going to work.</p><p>"The mother of all leadership principles is customer obsession," Clark said, according to a recording of the meeting Business Insider has heard. An Amazon exec who was a Kentucky warehouse manager is now one of Jeff Bezos' most powerful generals, overseeing marketing, logistics, Prime and drones. Meet 'the sniper' and his 15-member team.

Amazon's first bookstore <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazons-seattle-bookstore-review-2015-12">opened in </a><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazons-seattle-bookstore-review-2015-12">Seattle's upscale University Village mall</a> last fall.</span></p><p><span></span>This is the latest in the web company's expansion into brick-and-mortar retail. Amazon CEO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-plans-to-open-more-retail-stores-2016-5">Jeff Bezos said in May</a> that he "definitely" plans to open "additional stores," without specifying exactly where or what type of stores it'll be.</p><p><span>Chicago would be Amazon's third bookstore location. According <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-amazonbooks-malls-20160308-story.html">to the LA Times</a>, signs posted in front of a building near UC San Diego show Amazon's building a new bookstore at the Southern California university, although the company never officially confirmed it. There are also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-might-launch-store-in-new-york-2016-7">rumors of a New York location</a> being in the works.</span></p><p><span><a href="http://www.recode.net/2016/2/3/11587530/meet-the-guy-behind-amazons-secret-retail-store-plans">Recode's Jason Del Rey previously reported</a><span> </span><span>that Amazon is putting a lot more focus on its bookstore business, putting long-time exec Steve Kessel in charge of the whole operation. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Reed Saxon</span></p><p class="caption">Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos</p></div><p></p></div></div>Amazon just opened its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/photos-inside-amazon-brick-and-mortar-bookstore-2015-11">first-ever brick-and-mortar store</a> last year in Seattle, but don't expect that to be the only one for much longer.</p><p>According to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, there's definitely more coming.</p><p>"We're definitely going to open additional stores," Bezos said at Amazon's annual shareholder meeting on Tuesday, <a href="https://twitter.com/geekwire/status/732615971932917760">according to Geekwire</a>.</p><p>Bezos didn't further elaborate on his plan, or specify what kind of stores he was referring to, saying it's still an experiment at this stage. </p><p>But his comment is the strongest indication on the e-commerce giant's growing ambitions in the physical <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> realm. And it suggests that Amazon thinks it may have cracked the code on creating a differentiated shopping experience from traditional brick-and-mortar stores, which have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-chart-shows-how-amazon-is-totally-crushing-its-retail-competitors-2016-5"> suffered from weakening sales</a> lately.</p><p>In fact, Amazon is already reported to be working on launching its <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-amazonbooks-malls-20160308-story.html">second physical bookstore</a> in Southern California, while expanding its Amazon Books division led <a href="http://www.recode.net/2016/2/3/11587530/meet-the-guy-behind-amazons-secret-retail-store-plans">by long-time exec Steve Kessel</a>.</p><p>Bezos' comment is a big step away from some of the previous comments he's made on the idea of launching a physical retail store. In a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-jeff-bezos-stores-2012-11">2012 interview with Charlie Rose</a>, Bezos said he'd love to open a brick-and-mortar store, but only if Amazon can have a "truly differentiated idea."</p><p><span>"<span>One of the things that we don't do very well at Amazon is do a me-too product offering. So when I look at physical retail stores, it's very well served...<span>We don't want to do things because we can do them. We want to do something because it's going to - we don't want to be redundant," Bezos told Rose.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Some of those different ideas are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-amazon-retail-stores-could-disrupt-traditional-shopping-experience-2016-2">already starting to show up</a> at Amazon's first retail store in Seattle.
