<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Yorkshire Three Peaks  is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-hike-the-wave-arizona-utah-trail-review-photos-2024-2">popular hike</a> in England's Yorkshire Dales National Park.</li><li>I took part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to complete the 24-mile hike in under 12 hours.</li></ul><p>The Yorkshire Three Peaks is a <a target="_blank" href="https://getoutside.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/guides/most-popular-walking-routes-in-os-maps/">popular hike in England's</a> Yorkshire Dales <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-lesser-known-us-national-parks-according-to-frequent-traveler-2024-1">National Park</a>. Thousands of people travel each year to take on the Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent, and Whernside mountains — a hike that covers 24 miles.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Along with my husband and two friends, I participated in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, which calls on hikers to complete the 24-mile hike in under 12 hours.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The experience was an endurance challenge that offered <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-france-best-view-for-tourists-free-rooftop-photos-2024-1">spectacular</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-france-best-view-for-tourists-free-rooftop-photos-2024-1">views</a>, beautiful hill walking, and an incredible sense of achievement.</p><p>Here's what hiking the Yorkshire Three Peaks was like.</p><h2>We began our journey in Yorkshire after meeting up with our group</h2><div type="image" title="Sheep graze in a field at dawn, with mountains and fog in the background." height="2268" width="3024" msid="108112435" hostid="261"></div><p>To start our journey, we headed to Yorkshire, about a three-hour drive from my home in Oxfordshire. After spending a night at The Old Hill Inn near the start of the hike, we began our quest at 6 a.m.</p><p class="MsoNormal">We met up with a group of about 100 people who would be participating in the challenge with us. Though we could've done a self-guided hike, we booked an organized walk so we wouldn't have to worry about navigation.</p><p>After a kit check, where our <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-wish-i-packed-on-first-long-distance-hike-mistakes-2023-7">hiking gear</a> was checked for suitability, we started climbing Ingleborough just as the sun was rising and the clouds were clearing.</p><p>The route is circular, meaning you can start from any point and walk in either direction. Starting with Ingleborough meant no time to ease into the walk — we ascended immediately. Even though I hike often, I was worried the whole route would be this steep.</p><p class="MsoNormal">After a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/hikes-around-the-world-2019-3">beautiful walk</a> up the first half, there was a steep incline to the summit. The path became a one-person-wide set of rocky steps, which required some light scrambling — full-body crawling using our hands and feet.</p><p class="MsoNormal">With people ahead of and behind us at all times, we couldn't stop for longer than a quick moment.</p><p>We made it up to the top, with one peak in the bag before 8 a.m. Thankfully, our next path was gentler and opened to a calmer, more relaxed descent.</p><h2>We made a quick stop in the village of Horton in Ribblesdale.</h2><div type="image" title="People walking along steep paths in green hills." height="1152" width="1536" msid="108112436" hostid="261"></div><p>The path led us to the village of Horton in Ribblesdale. I was devastated to discover there would be no designated snack stops and that we'd have to eat on the go.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Luckily, I learned to put food in the outside pockets of my backpack so I could reach in and eat as I walked.</p><p>At times, I found the pace of the organized hike a bit quick. I would've liked more time to stop and admire the views, but I knew we had to keep the momentum going.</p><div type="image" title="Annabel, wearing a gray hat and a blue backpack, stops to pose for a picture while hiking." height="1737" width="2316" msid="108112439" hostid="261"></div><p>The climb up Pen-y-ghent started more slowly, and we walked in stages, with walls acting as markers. The path changed again, becoming steeper and requiring us to scramble up rock formations.</p><div type="image" title="Anabel and her partner Chris at the peak. There is a large formation of rocks next to them." height="900" width="1200" msid="108112440" hostid="261"></div><p>We reached the summit before midday, with a quick chance for photos at the top.</p><h2>Next, we headed to Whernside to hike the final peak</h2><p>The descent began a mammoth three-hour stretch to Whernside.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The group had really spread out by this point, and we walked with a smaller group of 10 people the rest of the way. I was tired, but knowing we had completed most of the climbing made me determined to finish.</p><p class="MsoNormal">With no immediate hills to climb or places to reach, it was harder to stay focused on the flatter sections of the hike, but we were able to chat and focus on the beautiful views.</p><p>Eventually, we reached Ribblehead Viaduct, an incredible Victorian railway bridge. We watched in awe as a steam train made its way across as we arrived.</p><div type="image" title="The Ribblehead Viaduct, a Victorian Railway Bridge, in the middle of the hiking trail in a cloudy day." height="2268" width="3024" msid="108112441" hostid="261"></div><p>At this point, we'd learned that a thunderstorm was coming and were advised to take a low pass around the final mountain rather than the high pass to the summit.</p><p class="MsoNormal">I was disappointed, but after walking over 18 miles for nine hours, we listened to our heads and feet and opted for the lower pass.</p><p>We snaked around Whernside and began the final stretch back to the start. I was tired by this point, but the end was in sight.</p><h2>We ended the day at a pub</h2><div type="image" title="A woman's hand holding a glass of beer in a grassy area." height="2268" width="3024" msid="108112442" hostid="261"></div><p>After completing the hike, we headed to the pub. I can't overstate the pure joy I felt taking off my hiking boots, sitting down, and having a drink in the sunshine.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge is a brilliant endurance test that combines exertion with nature and serenity with popularity.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Having done the group-guided challenge once, I'm tempted to try the route again as a self-paced walk. I'd also love to try to make it up the final hill — and make more time to appreciate the views along the way.</p>

I took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge with a group. Next time, I'll attempt this popular long-distance hike alone.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In January, an F-35 fighter jet crash-landed on <keyword id="11898296" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aircraft-carrier" source="Orion">aircraft carrier</keyword> <keyword id="12634070" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="uss-carl-vinson" source="Orion">USS Carl Vinson</keyword> and fell into the <keyword id="12063094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="south-china-sea" source="Orion">South China Sea</keyword>.</li><li>A leaked video shows the fifth-generation stealth fighter slam into the flight deck.</li></ul><p>A <keyword id="12063092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="f-35c" source="Orion">F-35C</keyword> stealth fighter <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/f-35-landing-mishap-aircraft-carrier-south-china-sea-2022-1">crash-landed</a> last month on the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson while it was operating in the South China Sea. In the days that followed the <keyword id="12129639" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="crash" source="Orion">crash</keyword>, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-appears-to-show-f35-striking-aircraft-carrier-before-crashing-2022-2">video was leaked</a> showing the jet striking the carrier's deck before falling into the ocean.</p><p>In the video, someone can be heard shouting "wave off" just moments before the jet assigned to the "Argonauts" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 147 crashes into the ramp, bursts into flames, and slides across the flight deck.</p><p>Five sailors have been <a href="https://taskandpurpose.com/news/sailors-charged-f-35-crash-video-leak/">charged</a> with leaking the video of the crash, the cause of of which has yet to be explained by the Navy as an investigation is still ongoing. Seven service members were injured in the incident, including the pilot who ejected and was recovered by helicopter.</p><p>Insider spoke with retired Cmdr. Guy Snodgrass, a former US naval aviator and TOPGUN instructor, about what we are seeing in the leaked video.</p><p>"The one thing we know is certainly true is that for whatever reason, the pilot or the airplane got too low on the approach, and that's what caused the ramp strike," Snodgrass said, adding that it is likely a slow airspeed contributed to the crash. </p><p>But it is hard to say whether the crash was due to human error or to some technical malfunction, he explained.</p><p>"Just from that video, it's impossible to tell if the pilot was flying manually or if the plane was assisting with the landing," he said. "So that's a key component we would need to know to make a better evaluation."</p><p>Snodgrass said when pilots are flying manually – with fighter jets like the F-35C – a ramp strike tends to occur when the pilot starts to go too slow, having pulled the throttle back too far and developing a sink rate that's steeper than expected.</p><p>This, according to Snodgrass, is like a "point of no return," because even if you push the throttle all the way forward or go into afterburner – a method of increasing the engine's thrust for a short period of time – it's too late to stop the descent and start climbing again. </p><p>"If it happens at that wrong spot, then no matter what you do, there's really nothing that's going to prevent that type of a ramp strike," Snodgrass said.</p><p>The leaked video shows the plane's pilot eject as the fiery fifth-generation fighter slides across the deck. Sailors on the flight deck can be seen rushing about as the plane crashes into the sea.</p><p>The fighter ripped out all four arresting wires, cables the plane hooks onto during recovery. It took the ship's crew, which immediately sprang into action, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-carrier-ready-again-within-hour-of-f-35-crash-2022-2">about 30-45 minutes to get the carrier ready to fight again</a> after the incident.</p><p>January's crash was the sixth known F-35 crash, and it comes on the heels of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/f-35-that-crashed-off-uk-carrier-has-been-recovered-2021-12https://www.businessinsider.com/f-35-pilot-flying-off-uk-aircraft-carrier-bails-out-2021-11">another F-35 crash</a> involving the British Royal Navy. That jet crashed into the Mediterranean during flight operations off the British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth in November 2021. That jet was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/f-35-that-crashed-off-uk-carrier-has-been-recovered-2021-12">recovered the next month</a>. </p><p>The Navy is still in the process of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-working-to-pull-f35-out-of-south-china-sea-2022-1">pulling January's crashed F-35 out of the South China Sea</a>, which they want to do before anyone else might attempt to get their hands on it.</p><p>Though China has denied having any interest in the aircraft, experts say China would almost certainly want to get ahold of the F-35, a highly capable fifth-generation fighter jet that has taken many years and significant funding to research and develop. </p><p>"If China gets it now, they've recovered some of our latest and greatest technology," Snodgrass explained. "So it raises not only a question about the airframe and the aircraft itself, but it also raises a question about security."</p><p>"It is our property," Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said earlier this month in response to questions about the jet. "It is not uncommon for us to recover our property when it is lost at sea. And we are making every effort to do that in this case."</p>

Former TOPGUN instructor breaks down the leaked video of a F-35 crashing on the deck of a US Navy aircraft carrier

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1972612" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Coinbase">Coinbase</keyword> stands to face steeper competition and its shares are likely to fall to $100 or less, <keyword id="10394940" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-constructs">New Constructs</keyword> CEO <keyword id="3498946" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="david-trainer">David Trainer</keyword> said about the <keyword id="2721952" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="crypto">crypto</keyword> exchange operator. </li><li>Coinbase is expected to report first-quarter earnings of $3.07 per share on revenue of $1.82 billion on Thursday. </li><li>"The stronger Coinbase's earnings are now, the more attractive this fast-growing market looks to larger competitors," said Trainer. </li></ul><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/coin-stock">Shares of Coinbase</a> will likely continue their descent and drive down to $100 or even lower, said veteran Wall Street analyst David Trainer who sees competition making it difficult for the cryptocurrency exchange to meet future profit expectations.</p><p>The warning from the New Constructs CEO comes ahead of Coinbase's first-quarter results on Thursday after the closing bell. Coinbase will present figures for the first time since its shares began trading in April on Nasdaq, cheered at the time for breaking new ground as the first cryptocurrency platform to go public.</p><p>"Coinbase is not likely to fulfill the profit expectations baked into the stock's current valuation of $58 billion due to rising competition in the cryptocurrency trading space, which should reduce the company's market share and pricing power," Trainer said in a Tuesday note.</p><p>"Investors," he said, "should expect the stock to continue to underperform, as shares could fall to $100 or less as it becomes clear the company is unlikely to meet the future profit expectations baked into the stock price."</p><p>Coinbase is expected to post first-quarter earnings of $3.07 per share on revenue of $1.82 billion, according to a FactSet poll of analysts. Even if Coinbase were to exceed first-quarter expectations, New Constructs expects the stock to continue to fall over the long term.</p><p>"The stronger Coinbase's earnings are now, the more attractive this fast-growing market looks to larger competitors with greater resources," said Trainer. He said <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/pypl-stock">PayPal</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/sq-stock">Square</a> already charge lower fees than Coinbase, and trading app Robinhood offers its customary zero-commission service for buying and selling <keyword id="2420795" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="cryptocurrencies">cryptocurrencies</keyword> offered on its platform. </p><p>"Coinbase will likely not be able to sustain blowout earnings going forward as competition enters the market," he added, echoing his early April warning about competition facing Coinbase from Gemini, Bitstamp, Kraken and Binance. Those who bore the elements did so out of what they described as a fervent desire to see former President <keyword id="11914386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="donald-trump" source="Orion">Donald Trump</keyword> and show their support for a possible third White House run in 2024.</p><p>To the east in Allegheny County — where <a href="https://www.publicsource.org/biden-trump-allegheny-county-pittsburgh-vote-breakdown/">record turnout not seen since 1964</a> helped deliver Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes to President Joe Biden in 2020 — voters from rusted-out steel towns to ritzy suburbs said they're feeling increasingly alienated from the state's closed primary system, which several Pennsylvanians blamed for producing more extreme candidates in the general election. It's a hunch <a href="https://news.usc.edu/170366/top-two-open-primary-elections-less-extreme-lawmakers-usc-study/">backed up by political science research</a>. </p><p>"I've been watching the attack ads," Frank Lascola, an independent 82-year-old Army veteran who votes Democratic "as a habit," told Insider over a cup of coffee at a <keyword id="13052635" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pittsburgh" source="Orion">Pittsburgh</keyword> diner, shaking his head.</p><p>Lascola said he "can't remember all this bullshit" at his age, and that he misses candidates like the late Sen. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrnRU3ocIH4">John McCain shutting down conspiracy theories</a> among voters.</p><p>Despite an <a href="https://www.kantar.com/north-america/inspiration/advertising-media/political-ad-spending-for-2022-midterm-elections-to-top-7-billion-dollars">estimated $7.8 billion</a> that will be spent on ads by Election Day in November, the Pennsylvania voters who spoke to Insider were already sick of them.</p><p>Whoever the Keystone State voters end up picking to replace the retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, their next senator will either be a key addition for Democrats defending the thinnest of majorities, or a Trump acolyte about as far as one can get from Toomey in the reshaped GOP.</p><p>Outside of the frosty reception Oz received at the Trump rally in Greensburg, more than two-dozen Pennsylvanians Insider spoke with across Pittsburgh and its surrounding towns had no idea he was running for office in their state, much less as a Republican. Even in one of the nation's most pivotal battleground states, even with TV celebrity-level name recognition, and even with the coveted Trump endorsement, the Oz campaign is running into the same problem as other statewide Republican and Democratic operations: voter burnout.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/01/05/americans-at-the-ends-of-the-ideological-spectrum-are-the-most-active-in-national-politics/">Pew Research survey</a> on the 2020 election found that moderate voters in particular are especially susceptible to voter fatigue and subsequent lower turnout than the most ideologically extreme coalitions in both major parties. There's also a larger overall trend of heightened anxiety among Americans, with a <a href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/americans-feel-burnt-out-personally-and-politically/">FiveThirtyEight</a> analysis finding a jump in feelings of burnout and worries for what 2022 would hold. </p><h2>'I don't wanna lose sleep thinking about this guy' </h2><div type="image" title="Pennsylvania Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz listens as former President Donald Trump speaks on behalf of his campaign at the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds." height="1249" width="2500" msid="91476655" hostid="261"></div><p>The journey into Pittsburgh from the east feels like a never-ending descent.</p><p>Rolling hills and valleys guide winding roads through tunnels that lead to steeper hills and deeper valleys, culminating in the final approach when the city's skyline and myriad bridges finally come into view.</p><p>In the heart of downtown Pittsburgh at Cherries Diner, Lascola sat at his usual spot at a table off to the side of the counter, back turned to the TV news.</p><p>"I never thought I'd see this in my lifetime," Lascola, a retired mechanical engineer, told Insider as his coffee cooled, referring to the January 6, 2021 Capitol siege.</p><p>Still shaken by the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-siege-module"> violent insurrection, </a>Lascola said he fears the return of <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/08/03/joseph-mccarthy-and-the-force-of-political-falsehoods">McCarthyism</a> and its paranoia among neighbors if Trump retakes the White House.</p><p>Unlike the <keyword id="11985407" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="maga" source="Orion">MAGA</keyword> faithful at the Greensburg rally, Lascola was adamant that he doesn't want Trump to run again in 2024, but he's unable to muster the will to care.</p><p>"Well, I'll be honest with you, I may not like it, but I don't wanna lose sleep over this guy," Lascola said, referring to Trump. </p><p>"If my people wanna elect this guy," he continued, "then I have to obey the law, but I'm not gonna ruin my health. It's hard. I can't help the way I feel about this, but I can help the way I behave."</p><p>Lascola said he's scratched his head seeing friends and acquaintances continue to support the former president, but he tries not to judge them. He said he voted for President Barack Obama twice as well and voted for Trump's Democratic opponent in both 2016 and 2020.</p><p>"I don't take a shot at those people," he said of voters in favor of Trump. "I say they pick him because they've been bullied all their life, and they see a guy that they think won't take any bullies."</p><p>Just down the Monongahela River in McKeesport, the second-largest city in Allegheny County, a former Trump supporter was less forgiving.</p><p>Bernard Bahleda, a 72-year-old retired postal worker, was buying a gun for his wife ahead of Mother's Day in a post-industrial landscape marked by abandoned buildings and rusted-out steel mills.</p><p>Agreeing with the three men behind the counter at Legion Arms, Bahleda said he's sick of all the ads for the Senate and gubernatorial primaries, but he's even more done with Trump.</p><p>"He changed me around completely because of his lies," Bahleda told Insider, adding that he voted for Trump in 2016 but switched to Biden in 2020.</p><p>Loathing any candidate seeking Trump's endorsement, Bahleda said he hopes Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman wins the Democratic primary on May 17 so he can back him in the general election. Fetterman has held onto a roughly <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2022/senate/pa/pennsylvania_senate_democratic_primary-7536.html#polls" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">30 percentage point lead</a> over challengers US Rep. Conor Lamb and state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta.</p><h2>Between a Trump GOP and a hard place</h2><h2><div type="image" title="John Fetterman stands in a hoodie and shorts as a golden retriever dog looks up at him." height="1667" width="2500" msid="91476657" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>Life has always been good in the ritzy suburb of Sewickley, 79-year-old Thomas Wright told Insider.</p><p>But when the topic of the midterm elections came up, Wright furrowed his brow and adjusted his seat in the stands from where he was watching a lacrosse game between Sewickley Academy, his grandson's middle school, and St. Edmonds Academy.</p><p>In the ornate hamlet along the Ohio River, Wright said a recent influx of young professionals is about the only big change he's seen as a lifelong Sewickley resident.</p><p>A registered Republican and retired trial lawyer, Wright told Insider he doesn't want to support Oz or his biggest rival, former hedge fund CEO David McCormick. After watching the candidates debate, he said he's leaning toward real estate developer Jeff Bartos, who's polling at an average of just 4.5% in the race behind Oz, McCormick, and Kathy Barnette in the top three.</p><p>Wright refused to vote for Trump at the top of the GOP ticket in 2016 and 2020, but hasn't been able to stomach any Democratic candidates, either.</p><p>"I'd have trouble supporting Fetterman. Don't like his leanings," Wright said, still holding onto a slight smile from his grandson scoring a goal in the number 11 jersey.</p><p>More than an hour west from the gun store where Bahleda lauded Fetterman's record as the former mayor of Braddock, Wright echoed many of the McKeesport retiree's qualms with Trump, only this time within view of a Porsche dealership.</p><p>Both Wright and Bahleda said inflation is a primary concern for them. But Bahleda was much more sympathetic to Biden — whom he said has few options to address inflation, <a href="https://blogs.worldbank.org/voices/return-global-inflation#:~:text=Emerging%20markets%20and%20developing%20economies%20have%20been%20hit%20by%20a,with%20Asia%20so%20far%20immune.">a global problem</a> — from his vantage point in post-industrial McKeesport. </p><p>Unwilling to entertain any candidate vying for a Trump endorsement — or even a goateed, 6-foot 11-inch tall Democrat who wears shorts everywhere — Wright acknowledged that he's in the minority of the GOP, and that the fired-up base in each party ultimately gets to decide who goes on the ballot, not him.</p><h2>'I just want somebody from Pennsylvania'</h2><div type="image" title="A flag covers seats under the grandstand roof at the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds in Greensburg, Pennsylvania." height="1477" width="2500" msid="91476659" hostid="261"></div><p>While the Trump rally attendees weren't sold on Oz either, those who spoke with Insider also eschewed skepticism over McCormick, tending instead to back Barnette, a conservative author and commentator who would become the first Black woman to represent Pennsylvania in the Senate.</p><p>Others, like Michelle Sinsabaugh, a 62-year-old bus driver from nearby Mont Pleasant, were undecided but also firmly in the never-Oz camp.</p><p>"Ten years ago he says this, now he's sayin' this — and I don't even know if he's from Pennsylvania," Sinsabaugh told Insider. </p><p>"I just want somebody from Pennsylvania, someone who actually grew up here," Lynn Johnson, a 55-year-old restaurant server from Ligonier, Pennsylvania, said while making her way across the muddy fairgrounds.</p><p>In an RV on the outskirts of the fairgrounds in Greensburg, Trump merchandise salesman Reggie Jones told Insider that as far as he's concerned, nothing's really dimmed the appeal of the former host of "The Celebrity Apprentice." This, despite Trump <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-effect-on-georgia-runoffs-cost-the-gop-republican-losses-2021-1">costing Republicans the House, Senate, and White House</a> in just four years.</p><p>Anti-Biden merchandise may have been slow to catch on, Jones said, but "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lets-go-brandon-chant-origin-video-what-does-it-mean-2021-10">Let's Go Brandon</a>" items have caught up to the 2016 interest in Hillary Clinton.</p><p>But above all, Jones said, Obama, Trump's original nemesis, remains the driving force for his customers — not inflation, the US's messy withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, or any other current issues.</p><p>"Now Obama stuff has been great," Jones told Insider as a few Trump supporters bought ponchos and umbrellas in anticipation of the rain. "Off the roof, man."</p>
