In a major development for the country's steel sector, the <keyword id="6355512" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-cabinet">Union Cabinet</keyword> on Thursday approved a production-linked incentive (<keyword id="53367" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLI">PLI</keyword>) scheme for the manufacturing of specialty steel, with an outlay of ₹6,322 crores. An official statement said that the scheme will boost the production of high-grade specialty steel in the country. Further, it will lead to enhanced exports and minimise dependence on imports for high-end steel. The scheme is expected to bring in an investment of approximately ₹40,000 crores and capacity addition of 25 MT. The duration of the scheme will be 5 years, commencing from 2023-24 to 2027-28. With a budgetary outlay of ₹6,322 crores, the PLI scheme would cover coated/plated steel products, high strength/wear-resistant steel, specialty rails, alloy steel products, steel wires, and electrical steel. These steel products are used in a variety of applications which are both strategic and non-strategic and include white goods, automobile body parts and components, pipes for transportation of oil and gas, boilers, ballistic and armour sheets for defence applications, high-speed railway lines, turbine components, electrical steel meant for power transformers, and electric vehicles. India presently operates at the lower end of the value chain in the steel sector. Value-added steel grades are largely imported in India. This is because of the disabilities faced by the steel industry to the tune of $80-100 per ton, on account of higher logistics and infra cost, higher power and capital cost, and taxes and duties. The objective of the PLI scheme for specialty grade steel is to address this disability by incentivizing the production of specialty steel within the country. The scheme proposes to incentivize eligible manufacturers by paying between 4 percent to 12 percent incentive on incremental production. PLI incentive will also help the Indian steel industry mature in terms of technology and move up the value chain. Any company registered in India, engaged in manufacturing of the identified specialty steel grades will be eligible to participate in the scheme. It will, however, have to ensure that the steel used for making specialty steel is "melted and poured" in the country, thereby ensuring end-to-end manufacturing keeping in view of the Prime Minister's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. The PLI scheme for specialty steel is expected to play an important role in strengthening the domestic steel value chain and will incentivize the steel sector to invest in technological capability building to contribute to the global steel value chain by producing value-added steel. Considering the additional production and investment, the scheme has an employment generation potential of about 5.25 lakh of which 68,000 will be direct and the rest will be indirect employment. Several also owners told BI that the company could improve its customer support — whether it was being more transparent about delays or communicating updates.Stephen Kapusta, a self-described "Tesla fanboy" from Orlando who owns the top-of-the-line Cyberbeast variant of the truck, said he doesn't want to have to wait an unknown amount of time for his Cybertruck off-road light bar add-on to arrive after paying over $100,000.Jason Burtman, a Cybertruck owner from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, received his vehicle in the last couple of weeks and said it was "incredible." But he's still figuring out how to get the FSD update without access to home WiFi from his garage.Jay O'Brien, a Cybertruck owner from Kansas City, Missouri, said the truck exceeded his expectations. But he's still waiting for his wall charger to be installed and new wheel covers that were supposed to come a month after he got the car in May. He said the wheel covers don't matter — but "what does matter is setting expectations to a consumer" and not delivering on them.Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from BI.<h2 id="55339d69-93fe-4c31-ad06-a910836463d0">Cybertruck owners feel like celebrities — but you might get the finger while driving</h2>While it doesn't happen often, getting flipped off seems to be a right of passage of sorts for most Cybertruck owners. Some also reported getting cut off or cursed at by strangers.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-owner-finger-injury-splint-frunk-teset-2024-5">Cybertruck TikToker Joe Fay</a> told BI the bulk of the negative reactions he receives have been online or on the road. O'Brien said he had the opportunity to participate in a local parade with it. O'Brien said bringing a quick bit of joy to people is his favorite part of owning the EV.But the celebrity-like status comes with its downsides too. Kapusta said people's curiosity and interest go too far when they start looking inside his window.O'Brien similarly said when he doesn't have time to stop and show people around the car, people get upset and there's a "missed expectation.""There's nothing special about me," O'Brien said. Though US carriers are nuclear-powered, their escort ships still run on diesel, and their <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/newest-us-navy-supercarrier-underway-with-all-airpower-first-time-2023-3">air wings</a> require aviation fuel.The most capable replenishment vessels in the CLF are the fast combat support ships of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.navy.mil/Resources/Fact-Files/Display-FactFiles/Article/2174658/">Supply-class</a>, the largest combat logistics ships in the MSC fleet.Equipped with four cargo booms for loading cargo, they are capable of carrying 156,000 barrels of fuel, 1,800 tons of ordnance, 400 tons of refrigerated store, and 250 tons of other dry cargo.<div type="image" title="Fleet replenishment oiler Henry J. In addition, the Supply-class ships have a helicopter hangar and deck with space for two helicopters at the stern, enabling helicopter transfer known as vertical replenishment, or VERTREP.The FAS/RAS stations, combined with aerial resupply, enable Supply-class vessels to replenish up to four ships at once. Only two Supply-class ships, the USNS Supply and USNS Arctic, remain in service.The backbone of the CLF's refueling fleet are the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.msc.usff.navy.mil/Ships/Ship-Inventory/Fleet-Replenishment-Oiler/">Henry J. Kaiser-class</a> fleet oilers. Built between 1984 and 1996, the ships are 677 feet long, displace around 41,000 tons, and can carry up to 159,000 barrels of fuel.The Kaisers can refuel two warships simultaneously. They lack a helicopter hangar, but have a deck at the stern where helicopters from nearby ships can sling-load pallets.Fourteen Kaisers are in active service with the MSC.Though effective for refueling, the Kaiser-class has limited space for dry cargo — only enough for 586 pallets, including frozen and chilled food. The Navy relies on 14 Lewis &amp; Clark-class dry cargo/ammunition ships to fill in the gap.The Lewis &amp; Clark-class ships can carry a massive 8,391 tons of dry cargo, including 1,716 tons of refrigerated stores. A helicopter deck at the stern also enables VERTREP.Three John Lewis-class oilers — USNS John Lewis, USNS Harvey Milk, and USNS Earl Warren — are in service, and a fourth, USNS Robert F. Kennedy, is set to begin sea trials soon. Another was recently launched and two more are under construction.The class will soon become the main fleet oiler. An order for six ships was made in 2018, with options for three more exercised in 2022 and 2023. In September, the Navy signed a $6.7 billion contract for eight more John Lewis-class oilers with General Dynamics's National Steel and Shipbuilding Company. China's experience began in the 1980s.Its first replenishment ships could only carry about 10,500 tons of fuel. As China's fleet grew in the 1990s, it searched for a stopgap measure and found it in the Qinghaihu, an oiler built in Ukraine that was intended for the Soviet Navy.Ultimately, the Chinese opted to pursue a new design for its next replenishment ships: the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/china/qiandaohu.htm">Type 903-class</a> oiler.These ships can carry around 11,000 tons of cargo, including some 10,000 tons of fuel. Like the Qinghaihu, the Type 903s have a helicopter deck and helipad.Nine ships were built between 2002 and 2018, all of which are in service.The Type 903s form the backbone of China's replenishment fleet, but they are not the most capable. That title goes to the PLAN's Type 901-class fast combat support ships.The ships, which NATO designated the "Fuyu-class," are 787 feet long, displace 45,000 tons, have a helicopter deck and hangars, and are equipped with 5 FAS and 2 RAS stations. They are primarily meant to service China's carrier groups and can keep up as they are propelled by four gas turbine engines.The size, mission, and speed of the ships are comparable to the US Navy's Supply-class. Two Type 901s have been built: the Hulunhu and the Chaganhu.<div type="image" title="Replenishment ships like the Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo and ammunition ships are essential to carrier operations but are highly vulnerable to attack." height="1333" width="2000" msid="115143527" hostid="261" sizebytes="344510"></div><h2 id="e54916fd-474c-416c-9f6b-46ac068eead5">'Weakest link'</h2>The important role these ships play is hard to overstate.Between October 2023 and May 2024 in support of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-weapons-expenditure-cost-middle-east-conflicts-2024-10">Red Sea operations</a>, for instance, USS Supply <a target="_blank" href="https://gcaptain.com/usns-supply-crew-honored-for-exceptional-service-in-red-sea-operations/">replenished</a> US and allied ships 143 times, transferring over 87 million gallons of fuel and 14,928 pallets of supplies in the process.The Henry J. Kaiser- and Lewis and Clark-class vessels also enabled the continuous presence of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-carrier-strike-groups-significant-combat-power-middle-east-2024-8">two carriers in the Middle East</a>.The PLAN's oilers, meanwhile, have extended the reach of its warships. <a target="_blank" href="https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1007&amp;context=cmsi-notes">Its contributions to international anti-piracy efforts in the Gulf of Aden</a> have, since 2008, almost always been made up of two surface combatants and one oiler, enabling each task force to stay on station for 4 months.The new Type 901s are already proving their worth. Last year, the Type 901-class oiler Chaganhu supported the Shandong carrier group during a series of exercises near Taiwan, Guam, and in the South China Sea. This included 620 aircraft sorties in just 18 days, <a target="_blank" href="https://news.usni.org/2023/07/14/japan-releases-fighter-scramble-data-against-chinese-aircraft">according</a> to the Japanese Ministry of Defense.In all, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-growing-navy-conducts-first-dual-aircraft-carrier-drills-2024-10">Shandong</a> spent about as much time at sea as any US carrier in the western Pacific that year, due in no small part to its replenishment ships.Yet replenishment ships are also the weakest link in each country's carrier groups. The most obvious reason is that they are almost completely unarmed, making them defenseless. Their defenses are instead provided by escort ships.They also face additional challenges unique to each country. The US, for instance, faces a manpower shortage, limited <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-us-navy-warships-delayed-photos-2024-4">shipyard capacity</a>, and an aging fleet with ships approaching the end of their expected service lives.Military Sealift Command employs mostly civilian merchant mariners, but now has a recruiting issue of its own.The manpower issue has been serious enough for MSC to <a target="_blank" href="https://news.usni.org/2024/08/22/navy-could-sideline-17-support-ships-due-to-manpower-issues">propose sidelining 17 of its ships</a> — including two Lewis &amp; Clark-class ammo ships and one Kaiser-class oiler — so their crews could be sent to serve on other vessels.The Kaiser-class itself is aging quickly. Four of the active oilers are already past their 35-year service lives, while one, USNS Pecos, departed for deactivation last month.Ships can have their service lives extended, but American shipyards appear unable to <a target="_blank" href="https://thehill.com/opinion/national-security/4624326-almost-all-navy-shipbuilding-is-hopelessly-behind-schedule-as-war-looms/">keep up with demand</a> for new ships and maintenance for active ones, with some estimating that the Navy is as many as 20 years behind in needed maintenance.The backlog may be why only one Kaiser-class oiler, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-fired-captain-didnt-fix-steering-problem-near-miss-2024-9">USNS Big Horn</a>, was present in the Middle East during tensions between Israel and Iran in late September. This almost caused major problems when the ship accidentally <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-fuel-ship-damaged-incident-middle-east-2024-9">ran aground</a> and could no longer operate, forcing the Navy to rely on two Lewis &amp; Clark-class ammunition ships for refueling duties despite their smaller capability. The incident exposed <a target="_blank" href="https://responsiblestatecraft.org/refueling-navy-middle-east/">just how fragile UNREP networks can be</a>.China, meanwhile, has just 12 oilers despite having the world's largest navy, which puts a considerable strain on those ships. Additionally, its logistical network is hampered by a lack of overseas naval bases, which can serve as refueling and resupply stations for the oilers.China has the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-shipbuilding-power-players-making-warships-at-a-rapid-pace-2024-9">largest shipbuilding industry</a> in the world, however, enabling it to quickly build more oilers and convert some of its merchant ships into replenishment ships. US vs. Chinese replenishment ships: The workhorses that keep aircraft carriers operating

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Firebricks have been around for thousands of years.</li><li>Industries use them to store heat from burning <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exxon-acquisition-permian-basin-pioneer-fossil-fuels-energy-transition-2023-10">fossil fuels</a>; newer versions conduct electricity.</li></ul>Industrial manufacturers make materials like aluminum and glass for everything from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy02osti/32135.pdf">beverage containers</a> to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2238785423024006">aircraft parts</a>. They're also responsible for 17% of global carbon dioxide emissions, according to recent research published in <a target="_blank" href="https://doi.org/10.1093/pnasnexus/pgae274">PNAS Nexus</a>.That's a problem. Countries are struggling to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carbon-emissions-2022-record-renewables-growth-solar-wind-iea-2023-3">cut CO2 emissions</a> as the climate crisis worsens. And switching these major manufacturers to cleaner sources of energy, like wind and solar, would help significantly.But when the sun isn't shining or wind isn't blowing, these manufacturers need to rely on stored energy. Batteries are one option, but some scientists think an ancient technology, firebricks, is a cheaper and easier solution.<h2 id="4d66210e-a897-4885-9d6c-45b833a3fd2c">Firebricks are cheap and effective</h2><div type="image" title="A hand holds a thin grayish brick with white speckles" height="683" width="1024" msid="112508425" hostid="261" sizebytes="28908"></div>If you have a brick fireplace, you might notice the bricks stay warm for a while after the fire goes out.People have used bricks to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2352409X23000287"> help keep</a> kilns and ovens hot since the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bronze-age-lost-tomb-ireland-rediscovered-photogrammetry-2024-1">Bronze Age</a>. Even modern industrial manufacturers use firebricks in daily operations.They stack the bricks in tall rows, heat them up to extremely high temperatures, and then blow air through channels to harness the heat for melting glass or metal, for example.Heating up the bricks causes carbon emissions since manufacturers typically burn fossil fuels to do it.However, a few new companies think they've figured out how to use electricity from the grid to heat up the bricks instead.Electrified Thermal Solutions and other companies make firebricks that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/power-grid-transmission-renewable-energy-nimby-states-ferc-2024-5">conduct electricity</a>."A normal firebrick is an insulator like rubber. Electricity just doesn't go through it," MIT professor Charles Forsberg, an advisor to the company, said.However, when you add compounds like chromia and nickel oxide the firebrick becomes an electrical conductor.Forsberg said these conductive bricks function similarly to an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gas-stove-debate-cooking-induction-electric-kitchen-2023-1">electric oven</a>, except the firebrick can handle heat that would melt your oven's wires."It's a way to heat firebricks to a blazingly hot temperature," he said. It can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/05/25/science/race-clean-up-heavy-industry-heats-up/">reach</a> 3,270 degrees Fahrenheit, more than hot enough to melt steel, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/05/25/science/race-clean-up-heavy-industry-heats-up/">The Boston Globe reported</a>.Instead of storing the electricity like a battery, the bricks would store heat. So, a steel mill, for example, could take <a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow noreferrer" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/modernize-us-electric-grid-what-it-will-take-2024-5">electricity from the grid</a>. The high electrical current would heat up the oxides inside the firebricks, and the bricks would retain the heat, which the manufacturer could then use to melt metal.Of course, there's still the issue that electricity from the grid often comes from fossil fuels. But eventually, as more renewable energy feeds the grid, this could help major manufacturers drastically reduce carbon emissions, and also save a lot of money.Mark Jacobson, a professor at Stanford University, estimated in the PNAS Nexus study that transitioning 149 countries entirely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-renewable-energy-transition-solar-electric-vehicles-hit-records-2024-2">renewable energy</a> by 2050 would cost about $59 trillion. He and his colleagues used computer models to examine two options: one where industries used firebricks and one where they relied on technologies like electric furnaces and boilers and stored energy in batteries.Implementing firebricks saved over $1.2 trillion dollars worldwide, he told Business Insider.The savings partially come from the bricks' cheap cost, which are about a tenth of the price of traditional storage batteries, Jacobson said. "When we use firebricks, we reduce the cost of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-was-battery-powered-twice-last-week-2024-4">batteries</a> because we need fewer batteries," he said.<h2 id="518d0dd9-00e6-4e75-b1be-eeb5884abf76">Making small changes for big emissions savings</h2><div type="image" title="Two people stand in front of a device that looks like a large refrigerator" height="683" width="1024" msid="112508428" hostid="261" sizebytes="72432"></div>Forsberg said early adopters of conductive firebricks might still use <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/natural-gas-biden-exports-pause-energy-costs-less-predictable-2024-2">natural gas</a> or oil if they run out of stored heat."Someday in the future, it may all be electric," he said, "but my guess is in the near term, most of the people who need high-temperature heat are going to buy a cheap <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-ban-gas-stoves-in-new-buildings-emissions-reduction-2023-4">gas burner</a>."It's also going to take a while to get these new firebricks installed. Jacobson said the first adopters might be companies that need to replace their equipment or newcomers starting from scratch. Once they do, though, "I think they'll find that it's actually much more beneficial," he said.Electrified Thermal Solutions is working on one of its first industrial applications, <a target="_blank" href="https://electrifiedthermal.com/kentucky-governor-announces-ets-available-for-doe-funding-to-help-electrify-chemical-plant/">replacing</a> gas boilers in a Kentucky chemical plant.Another company, <a target="_blank" href="https://rondo.com/calgren-case-study">Rondo</a>, has installed its technology in a biofuel company in California. Rondo said its system reduces CO2 emissions and lowers the cost of energy because it requires less electricity than hydrogen fuel.Having a few successful example projects might help change some minds in other industries, Jacobson said.Forsberg said one of the biggest benefits of the newer firebrick technology is that it updates processes many industries have in place. "The goal is minimum change," he said. "If you want to cause a revolution in technology, don't change anything you don't have to change."

In offices and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stanley-cups-tearing-apart-gen-alpha-middle-schools-2024-1">middle schools</a> alike, the Stanley is a status symbol.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.sfgate.com/shopping/article/stanley-tumbler-deco-collection-18407213.php">New colors</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-employees-accused-of-snapping-up-holiday-stanley-merchandise-2023-11">collaboration drops</a> have made the brand a collector's item. And people are definitely collecting.On TikTok, influencers are showing off their shelves full of Stanley Tumblers, each in different colors. Some have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@mia_lovespink/video/7252740341965557038">a few dozen</a>, others can have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@carolinakyung/video/7294783854043270442">upwards of a hundred</a>. And it's pretty easy to assemble an extensive collection with all the patterns and colors available.For Stanley, the newfound hype is probably a welcome change, considering the company has gone from $70 million in annual sales before 2020 to $750 million in 2023, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/12/23/how-a-40-ounce-cup-turned-stanley-into-a-750-million-a-year-business.html">CNBC reported.</a> The brand has even hyped up people showing off their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@stanleybrand/video/7233465131060038955">collections</a> on TikTok.But for a water bottle <a target="_blank" href="https://www.stanley1913.com/pages/since-1913?avad=55097_b36cbfa59&amp;utm_source=avantlink&amp;utm_medium=cpa&amp;utm_campaign=40661&amp;utm_content=Custom+Link">promoted</a> as "reusable" and "Built for Life," the overconsumption of these candy-colored steel bottles is counterintuitive.<div type="image" title="The Stanley 40oz straw Quencher." height="692" width="923" msid="107025346" hostid="261" sizebytes="21610"></div>As Jessica Heiges, a project director at the engineering firm WSP <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wired.com/story/stanley-cup-quencher-environment/">told Wired</a> that if people continue to purchase Stanleys and companies continue to produce to meet that higher demand, consumers could defeat its originally intended purpose."There's no possible way that they're going to use the same one over and over again, and therefore reach that environmental breakeven point where it's more beneficial than plastics," Heiges told Wired.Once people are over the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-everyone-is-obsessed-with-stanley-cups-bottles-2024-1">Stanley hype</a>, as they have done for other reusable water bottles before them (highlighting that the issue goes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stanley-water-bottle-tumbler-favorite-brands-that-came-before-2023-1">beyond the Stanley</a>), experts also point out that recycling isn't a viable option.For one, as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/stanley-tumbler-craze-environment-1.7086795">CBC News</a> pointed out, Stanley does not offer any product recycling options. As Myra Hird, a professor in the environmental studies department at Queen's University, told the outlet, recycling may not be the best solution."Recycling creates waste and it often creates toxic waste that is more difficult to dispose of than the original product," Hird said.There are other proposed solutions in the meantime. For example, Heiges told Wired that Stanley could offer repairs for damaged goods or different ways to keep the tumbler trendy through slight alterations that can be added to the product. That way, a whole new tumbler isn't needed.However, the ultimate solution to this chaos is a world where we don't need overconsumption to have fun."What is the point of all that consuming? Buying so they can participate in these trends? Buying and then promoting all for an audience that is online only?" Kathryn Coduto, assistant professor of media science at Boston University, told <a target="_blank" href="https://19thnews.org/2024/01/stanley-cup-colors-craze-reusable-sustainability-overconsumption/">The 19th News.</a> "It's kind of scary when you look at the actual environmental impacts and human rights impacts being made that are not good, not great for humans. PMI Worldwide, the parent company of Stanley, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.
