At the top, the UPI clocked over 19.65 billion transactions in volume and Rs 32.5 lakh crore in terms of value. The UPI transactions volume and value almost doubled since last year as it recorded about an 88 per cent increase in volume and over 71 per cent increase in value in Q3 as compared to the same quarter last year, according to <keyword id="1925688" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="worldline-india" source="Orion">Worldline India</keyword>'s 'Digital Payments Report' for the third quarter. The top three UPI apps in terms of volume and value were PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm Payments Bank App. The top five remitter Banks were <keyword id="6354731" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="state-bank-of-india" source="Orion">State Bank of India</keyword>, <keyword id="6357149" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hdfc-bank" source="Orion">HDFC Bank</keyword>, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, and ICICI Bank, whereas the top 5 beneficiary banks were Paytm Payments Bank, YES Bank, State Bank of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank. UPI person-to-merchant (P2M) and person-to-person (P2P) emerged as the most chosen payment method among consumers, accounting for 42 per cent of total transaction volume. This was followed by credit and debit card payments, which accounted for 7 per cent of volume and 14 per cent of value. "The swift adoption of digital payments can be witnessed with each passing quarter. Popular payment instruments like UPI, cards, PPIs are already clocking over 23 billion transactions in a quarter," said Ramesh Narasimhan, CEO, India, Worldline. Q3 data indicates healthy usage of credit cards and growth in the average ticket size. For credit cards, it is Rs 4,833; for debit cards, it is Rs 2,073; for UPI P2M, it is Rs 738; for UPI, P2P it is 2,576; for prepaid cards, it is 473; and for M-wallet, it is Rs 382. The total transaction between credit cards and debit cards comes to around 65 per cent and the remaining 35 per cent has been shared between UPI P2P, UPI P2M, and prepaid cards, the report showed. As of September 2022, the overall number of POS terminals installed by merchant-acquiring banks had surpassed 7 million. In Q3 2022, POS deployment increased by more than 41 per cent reaching 7.03 million, when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. In the online space, e-commerce (shopping for goods and services), gaming, utility and financial services contributed to over 86 per cent of the transaction in terms of volume and 47 per cent in terms of value. By the end of the third quarter, there were 1.01 billion credit and debit cards in circulation. Credit card volume and value were 725 million and Rs 3.5 lakh crore in Q3 2022, respectively. In the third quarter of 2022, the volume and value of debit card transactions were 907 million and Rs 1.88 lakh crore, respectively, the report said. At least 58.78 million FASTags have been issued till September, with 36 banks. Digital payments in India touch Rs 38.3 lakh cr at over 23 bn transactions

<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s unalloyed dominance at home over the last 12 years will be put through its most unique examination till date when <keyword id="13937" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rohit-sharma" source="Orion">Rohit Sharma</keyword>'s side faces a trend-defying <keyword id="19903600" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="england" source="keywords">England</keyword> in the first match of what promises to be a stirring five-Test series from Thursday. No team has been as invincible as India at home since their 1-2 defeat against the Three Lions led by Alastair Cook in 2012, stitching together a bull run of 16 successive series wins, including seven series sweeps. If one further breaks down the stats, India have lost just three Tests out of 44 they played in their own backyard in this phase, and this is a power walk even beyond the all-conquering West Indies in the '80s or Australia of the turn of the century. Several factors have contributed to this astonishing run over the last decade, including favourable pitches, bowlers who knew how to exploit those tracks and batters who churned out runs like popcorn from a vending machine. But two players have stood head and shoulders above the rest in these conquests -- off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. From Thursday, the Ash-Jaddu duet will be on show here at the RGI Stadium, where the pitch is expected to turn and grip as the match moves towards its conclusion. England already have a taste of what these two can do from their past visits here, and they will be worried, particularly about Ashwin. The 37-year-old still retains the burning zest of a 17-year-old to keep improving his craft and since 2012, Ashwin has grabbed 283 wickets from 46 Tests averaging a shade over 19. Jadeja might often get viewed as a supporting act to Ashwin, but in his own right, the Saurashtra man is a potent threat, and his deliveries that dart on straight could confuse the batters on a turner. Jadeja has taken 191 wickets from 39 Tests in the period where Ashwin kicked up a bedlam in opposition ranks to ensure that they don't get breathing space from both the ends. Together, they have bagged 500 wickets at an average of 21. In all likelihood, India will also include a third spinner to the combination in the form of either Axar Patel or Kuldeep Yadav, with the former having a better chance at the moment. England will be aware that no amount of preparation involving scruffing up pitches some 1600 miles away in Abu Dhabi will be enough to tackle this real menace, and in that sense, they will also need to tame the demons inside their own minds. What could work for them is that India will not have the presence and solidity of Virat Kohli at No. 4, as he has skipped the opening two Tests owing to personal reasons. He is a towering presence against England in <keyword id="9400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="test-cricket" source="Orion">Test cricket</keyword>. The star batter has made 1991 runs against them from 28 matches with five hundreds, but more than the numbers, his ability to master grand occasions will be missed. Middle-order batter Rajat Patidar is expected to join the squad as a replacement for Kohli for the Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam matches, though India's No.4 and 5 will be Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul with KS Bharat doing the wicket-keeping duties. Despite their talisman's absence, India is still a tall hurdle for the 'Bazball-ing' England to cross over. Of course, they have won a Test series in Pakistan 3-0 in late 2022 but a set of proven match-winners offer the visitors a far tougher challenge here. The whole furor over the return of young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir after the delay in processing his Indian visa too might have disturbed them ahead of an important fixture. Skipper <keyword id="6369580" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ben-stokes" source="Orion">Ben Stokes</keyword> has already stated that he is "devastated" for the 20-year-old rookie. But this is not to say that England are totally incapable of pulling off a miracle. Under Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, they have been able to dish out a really fascinating brand of cricket. Notwithstanding that, the visitors need more than one element to come together for a meaningful fight -- big runs from veteran Joe Root and Stokes, a few wickets upfront from the ever-green James Anderson and their spinners who have no significant experience in these conditions. On the periphery, it is asking for too much. But Test cricket is a strange and unpredictable beast and it has the history of producing some truly extraordinary spectacles. By the end of 2022, more than 650 million COVID infections had been reported to the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword>. With the true number likely much higher, and the tally increasing by hundreds of thousands every week, the scientific community has been focused on understanding the impact of COVID on our physical health, mental health and brain function. In the early stage of the pandemic, sleep scientists charted the costs and benefits of lockdowns on sleep patterns. The main finding was that we slept more in lockdown but the quality of our sleep was worse. Now a second wave of data is beginning to explain how becoming infected with COVID is affecting our sleep and even intruding into our dreams. The most recent meta-analysis, a review of all the currently available scientific literature, estimates that 52% of people who contract COVID suffer from sleep disturbances during the infection. The most common type of sleep disturbance reported is insomnia. People with insomnia typically find it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep, and often wake up early in the mornings. Worryingly, sleep problems sometimes persist even after recovery from the infection. A study in China found that 26% of people who were admitted to hospital with COVID showed symptoms of insomnia two weeks after discharge. And a US study showed that people who had been infected with COVID were more likely than people who had never been infected to have trouble sleeping, even up to a month after a positive COVID test. Sleep difficulties and long COVID While most people recover from COVID quickly, some continue to have symptoms in the longer term. People suffering from long COVID seem very likely to face persistent sleep problems. A 2021 study surveyed more than 3,000 people with long COVID. Almost 80% of participants self-reported sleep problems, most commonly insomnia. A more recent study collected data on both sleep duration and quality using smart wristbands. Participants with long COVID slept less overall and got less deep sleep than participants who had never had COVID. Loss of deep sleep is particularly concerning, as this type of sleep reduces how tired we feel and strengthens concentration and memory. Lack of deep sleep may be partly responsible for the commonly reported "brain fog" during and after COVID. The fact COVID often interferes with sleep is also worrying because sleep helps our immune system to fight infections. Why does COVID affect our sleep? There are many reasons why a COVID infection might lead to poor sleep. One review identified physiological, psychological and environmental factors. COVID can have a direct impact on the brain, including the areas that control both wake and sleep states. We don't yet have a clear understanding of how this works, but possible mechanisms could include the virus infecting the central nervous system or affecting the brain's blood supply. Typical symptoms of COVID include fever, coughing and breathing difficulties. These are also well known to disturb sleep. Poor mental health can lead to sleep problems and vice versa. There's a strong link between catching COVID and mental health issues, particularly depression and anxiety. This can be caused by worries about recovery, loneliness or social isolation. Such anxieties may make sleeping harder. Meanwhile, hospitalised COVID patients can face additional difficulties trying to sleep in busy hospital environments where sleep is often disturbed by noise, treatment and other patients. What about dreams? The International COVID-19 Sleep Study, a global research project involving sleep scientists from 14 countries, recently released its findings into dreaming. The study surveyed infected and uninfected participants about their dreams. Both groups had more dreams after the start of the pandemic than before. Intriguingly, the infected participants had more nightmares than the uninfected participants, while there was no difference between the groups before the pandemic. There's no simple explanation for why catching COVID may increase nightmares, but mental health may again play a role. Poor mental health is often accompanied by nightmares. The International COVID-19 Sleep Study team found the infected group showed more symptoms of conditions such as anxiety and depression. Getting help The close links between sleep and both mental and physical health mean that prevention and treatment of disturbed sleep have never been more important, and will require creative solutions from governments and healthcare providers. If you've had trouble sleeping during or after COVID, or are having more bad dreams than you used to, you're not alone. Both short- and long-term insomnia can often be treated with cognitive behavioural therapy (<keyword id="207775" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cbt" source="Orion">CBT</keyword>) that you may be able to access through your doctor. For less severe sleep problems, the European Academy for Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Insomnia has compiled recommendations, some based on principles applied in CBT, that you can follow at home. How Covid can disturb your sleep and dreams and what could help

The finance ministry has asked four large <keyword id="44530" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PSU">PSU</keyword> lenders to explore opportunities for acquisition of small and mid-sized banks with a goal to create global sized lenders, sources told PTI. One of the possibilities is that large public sector banks (PSBs) like Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank and Bank of India could try looking for potential candidates for acquisition, they said. So, informally, the finance ministry has sounded them that they should study the possibility for mergers and acquisitions so as to acquire scale and size of <keyword id="6354731" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-Of-India">State Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="13222" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI">SBI</keyword>), the sources added. There are factors like regional balance, geographical reach, financial burden and smooth human resource transition that have to be looked into while taking a merger decision, they said, adding there should not be merger of a very weak bank with a strong one "as it could pull the latter down". However, the clear picture would emerge only after the Niti Aayog report sets the tone and tenure of the roadmap for the second round of consolidation in the banking sector. In the last consolidation drive, five associates and Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) became part of SBI on April 1, 2017, catapulting the country's largest lender to among the top 50 banks in the world. <keyword id="229649" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Bikaner">State Bank of Bikaner</keyword> and Jaipur (SBBJ), State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH), State Bank of Mysore (SBM), <keyword id="4376212" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Patiala">State Bank of Patiala</keyword> (SBP) and <keyword id="6560713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Travancore">State Bank of Travancore</keyword> (SBT), besides BMB, were merged with SBI. With the merger, the total customer base of the SBI reached around 37 crore with a branch network of around 24,000 and nearly 59,000 ATMs across the country. The merged entity began operation with deposit base of more than Rs 26 lakh crore and advances level of Rs 18.50 lakh crore. The government in February had approved the merger of these five associate banks with SBI. Later in March, the cabinapproved merger of BMB as well. SBI first merged State Bank of Saurashtra with itself in 2008. Two years later, State <keyword id="269823" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank-of-Indore">Bank of Indore</keyword> was merged with it. Enthused by the success of SBI merger, the finance ministry is considering clearing another such proposal in the public sector banking space by this fiscal-end. Another round of merger should kick off once the non- performing assets (NPAs) situation improves. Toxic loans of public sector banks rose by over Rs 1 lakh crore to Rs 6.06 lakh crore during April-December of 2016-17, the bulk of which came from power, steel, road infrastructure and textile sectors.

This is why the Finance Minister wants to acquire more small and mid-sized banks

The finance ministry has initiated the process for finding new chief of the country's largest lender <keyword id="6354731" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-Of-India">State Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="13222" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SBI">SBI</keyword>) as Arundhati <keyword id="721" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhattacharya">Bhattacharya</keyword>'s extended term comes to an end on October 6, according to PTI. "Department of Financial Services has communicated to Banks Board Bureau the emerging vacancies at the top level of <keyword id="44530" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PSU">PSU</keyword> banks which will have to be filled during course of the year," a senior finance ministry official said. This also includes chairman and one managing director of the SBI, which alone has markshare of more than 20 per cent. Bhattacharya will complete her four-year term as chairperson of SBI on October 6. Besides chairman, SBI has four managing directors looking after different departments. The post assumes significance as the bank has recently merged five associates and the Bharatiya Mahila Bank (<keyword id="423104" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMB">BMB</keyword>) pushing SBI into the league of top 50 banks globally in terms of assets. State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur (SBBJ), State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH), State Bank of Mysore (SBM), State Bank of Patiala (SBP) and <keyword id="6560713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Travancore">State Bank of Travancore</keyword> (SBT), besides BMB, merged with SBI with effect from April 1. The process of integration would at least take a year. The government had in February approved the merger of these five associate banks with SBI. Later in March, the Cabinet approved merger of BMB as well. SBI first merged <keyword id="82725" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Saurashtra">State Bank of Saurashtra</keyword> with itself in 2008. Two years later, State <keyword id="269823" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank-of-Indore">Bank of Indore</keyword> was merged with it. For the fourth quarter ended March 2017, the bank reported more than doubling of its net profit on the back of increased lending and reduction in provisioning for bad loans. Net profit of the bank on standalone basis rose to Rs 2,814.82 crore for the March quarter as against Rs 1,263.81 crore in the same period of previous fiscal 2015-16. For the entire fiscal ended March 2017, the net profit of the bank improved by 5.36 per cent to Rs 10,484 crore as against Rs 9,951 crore in the previous fiscal. With stock prices inching up, SBI has lined up share sale through which it intends to raise Rs 15,000 crore during the current fiscal. It is in the process of appointing six merchant bankers for managing its proposed share sale. The central government holds 62.22 per cent stake in the bank as of March 2017.

Who is becoming SBI’s new chief after Bhattacharya?

The three-month relaxation of no service charges rolled out during the coronavirus lockdown comes to an end on July 1. The changes were brought in by the SBI after the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on March 24 that no charges will be levied on cash withdrawal made from any other bank’s ATMs for 3 months — April, May, and June — for bank customers. Till now, the SBI has not announced an extension, which means the old ATM withdrawal rules are likely to get reinstated. Withdrawals made from SBI ATMs and other bank ATMs exceeding the free limit of transactions will be charged. As risk escalates, it’s important to maintain a healthy suspicion for emails from email IDs you haven’t seen before, especially if its with respect to any coronavirus news. “Even if they promise news you are interested in, any information in the attachment will almost certainly be available from a more direct source, via a link of your own choosing,” said Paul Ducklin the principal research scientist at Sophos. As a precautionary measure, one should have a malware detection tool or anti-virus installed to alert them in case something slips through the crack. At the minimum, all devices should be fully updated with the latest security patches. SBI warns 2 million users may be at risk of phishing attacks in Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities

Government is considering giving a one-year extension to <keyword id="13222" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SBI">SBI</keyword> chief <keyword id="6379603" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arundhati-Bhattacharya">Arundhati Bhattacharya</keyword> amid the lender's consolidation with its associate banks. 
 
"There is a need for continuity at a time when the process of consolidation is going on," sources told an agency. 
 
In this regard, the government is looking at the proposal of granting extension to the current chairperson whose three-year term comes to an end this month, sources added. 
 The government has also received views of the <keyword id="2748088" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank-Board-Bureau">Bank Board Bureau</keyword> (BBB) on the extension issue and an order in this regard is expected in the next few days, according to the news agency. 
 Earlier this year, the <keyword id="6355513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cabinet">Cabinet</keyword> gave its nod for the merger of <keyword id="6354731" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-Of-India">State Bank of India</keyword> (SBI) and its associate lenders and <keyword id="6560712" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Mahila-Bank">Bharatiya Mahila Bank</keyword> (<keyword id="423104" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMB">BMB</keyword>) that would make the state-owned lender a global-sized bank. 
 SBI has five associate lenders -- <keyword id="229649" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Bikaner">State Bank of Bikaner</keyword> and Jaipur, <keyword id="6560713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Travancore">State Bank of Travancore</keyword>, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Mysore and <keyword id="143585" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Hyderabad">State Bank of Hyderabad</keyword>. 
 
Among the associate banks, State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Travancore are listed. 
 
The merged entity will become a banking behemoth, which could compete with the largest in the world, with an asset base of Rs 37 trillion (Rs 37 lakh crore) or over USD 555 billion, 22,500 branches and 58,000 ATMs. It will have over 50 crore customers. 
 
SBI had said that all its associate banks and BMB will be merged into it that will add an additional Rs 8 lakh crore to its assets. 
Presently, SBI has close to 16,500 branches, including 191 foreign offices across 36 countries. 
 SBI first merged <keyword id="82725" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Saurashtra">State Bank of Saurashtra</keyword> with itself in 2008. Two years later, State <keyword id="269823" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank-of-Indore">Bank of Indore</keyword> was merged with it.

SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya may serve for another year

India’s largest lender <keyword id="6354731" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="State-Bank-Of-India">State Bank of India</keyword> (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/SBI-aims-for-unbanked-rural-India-for-business-correspondent-model/articleshow/53315581.cms">SBI</a>) has approved the merger of its operations with six associate banks, viz. <keyword id="6560713" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Travancore">State Bank of Travancore</keyword>, <keyword id="4376211" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Mysore">State Bank of Mysore</keyword>, <keyword id="4376209" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="State-Bank-Of-Bikaner-and-Jaipur">State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur</keyword>, <keyword id="143585" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Hyderabad">State Bank of Hyderabad</keyword>, <keyword id="4376212" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-Patiala">State Bank of Patiala</keyword>, and Mahila Bank. 
 It was in June that the centre had given the go-ahead to merge <keyword id="13222" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SBI">SBI</keyword> with five of its associate lenders and <keyword id="6560712" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Mahila-Bank">Bharatiya Mahila Bank</keyword>, thus increasing the chances of it breaking into the top 50 list of Bloomberg's largest bank by asset ranking. 
 
Marking the first ever large-scale consolidation in the Indian banking industry, the merger will result in SBI becoming a huge banking entity with an asset book of Rs 37 lakh crore.

As per the terms of the merger, SBI will give 28 of its shares for every 10 shares held of State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, while for every 10 shares held of State Bank of Mysore as well as State Bank of Travancore, it will give 22 of its shares. 
 
For for every 100 crore equity shares of Bhartiya Mahila Bank, SBI will be giving 4,42,31,510 shares with face value of Re. 1.
