<keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> on Tuesday announced its <keyword id="14193636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups-accelerator-programme" source="Orion">startups accelerator programme</keyword> that will nurture about 20 startups led by women founders in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>.<br /><br />The programme is aimed to help women founders address challenges that are unique to their experience, including fundraising, hiring and many others.<br /><br />The inaugural batch of Google for <keyword id="8826137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups-Accelerator" source="Orion">Startups Accelerator</keyword> - India Women Founders programme will accept up to 20 women-founded/ co-founded startups in India, including startups at the minimum viable product stage, and support them through a three-month programme.<br /><br />The programme will place special focus on areas like access to networks, access to capital, hiring challenges, mentorship and many others which, for a variety of social reasons and low representation, prove challenging for female founders.<br /><br />In addition to these, the curriculum will include workshops and support around AI/ML, Cloud, UX, android, web, product strategy and growth, as well as provide access to a global community of women founders.<br /><br />India is the world's third largest startup capital, trailing only the US and China. Google to launch accelerator programme for women entrepreneurs in India

<br /> There was a time when start-ups had to keep aside a large portion of their capital for infrastructure. But over the past few years, Cloud has become the preferred infrastructure mode for start-ups, helping them grow and scale rapidly. <keyword id="285445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dropbox">Dropbox</keyword>, <keyword id="2407602" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="99-Designs">99 Designs</keyword>, <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword>, <keyword id="1652104" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Parse">Parse</keyword> and RedBus are some of the examples where Cloud played a significant role in their success. In fact, within a few years, these start-ups are turning into midsized companies with decent IT budgets set aside for hosting and other infrastructural requirements. Realising the growth potential in this space, Cloud service providers started to lure early-stage start-ups to host their products on their Cloud platforms. <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, Microsoft, Google, Rackspace and IBM have specific programmes designed for start-ups, so that they can easily get started on Cloud. These technology biggies are partnering with reputed incubators and accelerators to support their portfolio companies. Microsoft has gone a step ahead and invested in its own accelerator to attract start-ups to its Azure Cloud platform.<br />

<strong>1. <keyword id="141088" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon-Web-Services">Amazon Web Services</keyword> (AWS)</strong><br />
As one of the first Cloud platforms, AWS is the preferred platform for many start-ups across the world. It’s very common to see start-ups spin a couple of EC2 instances to launch their minimal viable products. But to make it more attractive for start-ups, Amazon has a programme called <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/activate/">AWS Activate</a>, which offers a slew of benefits. For a start-up that is a member of one of the accelerators, seed funds or other start-up organisations, Amazon offers free credits ranging between $1,000 and $15,000, along with technical training programmes and free business level support.<br />

<strong>2. IBM </strong><br />
SoftLayer, an IBM company, has a start-up incubator called <a href="http://www.softlayer.com/catalyst">Catalyst</a>. With 13 data centres in the US, Asia and Europe, it is a viable choice for start-ups. Just like its competitors, SoftLayer has partnered with incubators and accelerators around the world to support the start-up ecosystem. Google is not far behind when it comes to luring start-ups to its Cloud platform. The <a href="https://cloud.google.com/developers/starterpack/">Google Cloud Platform Startup Pack</a> offers $20,000 in credits to use any component of its Cloud services platform. Google has also partnered with accelerators and incubators like 10000Startups.com to support the latter’s portfolio companies.<br />

<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/BizSpark/">Microsoft BizSpark</a> programme is one of the oldest and popular programmes among the technology start-ups. Eligible companies get almost every piece of software that Microsoft ships, including access to Azure, its flagship Cloud platform. As a part of <a href="https://www.microsoftventures.com/home.aspx">Microsoft Ventures</a> initiative, it has set up exclusive accelerators in 7 cities across the world. With 82% funded start-ups behind it, the Bangalore accelerator has been a very successful one for Microsoft.<br />

<strong>5. Rackspace</strong><br />
Rackspace is one of the early Cloud service providers to offer special packages for start-ups. Its <a href="http://rackspacestartups.com/the-startup-program/">start-up programme</a> offers hosting on its public Cloud, private cloud or dedicated infrastructure. Rackspace also offers support from a great set of mentors to guide the participants besides providing architecture guidance on designing and building Cloud-based products.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Danny Moloshok/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Virgin founder Richard Branson.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Virgin Media announced today that it is launching a new technology accelerator in London that will be "powered" by TechStars.</p><p>The Virgin Media Accelerator, opening early 2016, will put 10 startups through a 13-week crash course in return for an equity stake in their business.</p><p>Richard Branson's telco, TV, and broadband business is the latest corporate to try and get close to London's most promising digital companies through an accelerator.</p><p>Corporates do this in the hope that their equity stake will one day be worth tens of millions. They also do it so they can sign up fast-growing businesses in their early days.</p><p>Barclays, Santander, Telefonica, and John Lewis have all launched similar initiatives in previous years but they've had mixed success.</p><p>Startups that enroll in the connectivity-focused Virgin Media accelerator programme will be forced to sacrifice 6% of their equity in exchange for a £13,000 investment in their business. Each company will also have the option to take an additional £65,000 convertible loan note for up to an additional 4% equity stake.</p><p>During the programme the startups will receive mentoring and guidance from Virgin Media executives and the TechStars team, as well as an office to work in and free internet from Virgin Media.</p><p>Once the programme has finished, the 10 startups will take part in a 'Demo Day' where they will each pitch to investors for the chance to raise capital.</p><p>Virgin Media wants startups focusing on a diverse set of backgrounds to apply, particularly those companies developing products and services that fall under: the Internet of Things, telecom infrastructures, customer data and experience, social enterprise, connected homes, connected goods and services, interactive home experiences, connected business services, home health and wellness, and connectivity for social good.</p><h2>Some accelerators over-promise</h2><p>The best known accelerator is arguably Y-Combinator in Silicon Valley, which nurtured companies like Airbnb and Dropbox in their early days. Richard Branson's Virgin Media is launching its own version of Y-Combinator in London

<keyword id="6355629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> on Wednesday expanded its programme for startups to support startups working on the solutions to solve real-life challenges towards the new normal post COVID-19 landscape in India.<br /><br /><keyword id="9416148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-startups">Google for Startups</keyword> has opened applications for the new batch of <keyword id="9416150" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-startups-accelerator">Google for Startups Accelerator</keyword>, with a special focus on health-tech, fin-tech, edu-tech, agri-tech, retail and SaaS startups, the company said in a statement.<br /><br />The next batch will commence in August 2020 and the last date of applications is June 30. This will be the fourth class of startups mentored by Google, which has so far closely mentored over 60 startups in India to date.<br /><br />"We have been working very closely with over 250 Startups founders over the last two months, holding consults with our network of experts, mentors and VCs to help solve for the immediate challenges faced by the founder community," informed Paul Ravindranath G, Programme Manager, Google for <keyword id="9416146" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups-accelerator-india">Startups Accelerator India</keyword>. <br /><br />In addition to the fresh call for applications, Google for Startups also announced the launch of 'Emerging stronger: Playbook' for startups to face the Covid-19 Challenge.<br /><br />"We have captured the work of these last two months into a handy playbook which we hope will benefit the larger ecosystem," Ravindranath added. <br /><br />Beyond the Accelerator, Google for Startups will continue to offer support to startups via its partner programme and mentor network. <br />

Google launches program to support Indian startups creating solutions for post COVID-19 world

They differ from Wayra's established accelerator in London because they don't offer direct investment (Wayra backs startups in London with funds of up to £40,000 in exchange for equity).</p><p>What the new programmes do offer, however, is mentoring, coaching, office space, and access to corporate and investor networks. They will be put them through a three-month acceleration programme, and the top 10 startups of the batch will receive funding. With four such programmes in a year, T-Hub aims to fund 40 startups. <br /><br />T-Angel is only the first in a series of funding programmes by Telangana to boost investments. <br /><br />“Over the last three years, the Telangana government has been constantly building the right elements to create an ecosystem for startups that allows them to scale with speed. The quantum of funds received by startups in Telangana has grown significantly too, we now see this only increases with the quality of startups the state has gathered,” said Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary Industries and IT, Telangana State.<br /><br />T-Hub which is a public-private partnership runs accelerator programmes with many companies, including social media giant Facebook. Through bootcamps and workshops, T-Hub will also ensure that a startup is <keyword id="6355120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment">investment</keyword> ready, by providing access to investment partners. <br /><br />Hyderabad which was formerly known for its IT sector, is also pushing for growth in innovation centers and startups. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Leading experts in the UK tech scene told Business Insider that London was "overcrowded" with too many accelerators producing too few successful companies. </li><li>More than 150 accelerators currently operate in the UK, a figure that has increased tenfold over the past decade. </li><li>Matt Clifford, CEO of Entrepreneur First, hit out at what he called Britain's "broken model" of startup investment schemes. </li><li>According to the latest research, around half of the UK's accelerators receive funding from larger corporations, such as Nike and British Airways.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories.</a></strong></li></ul><p>Industry experts have branded the UK accelerator scene "overcrowded", with too few early-stage investors capable of producing successful businesses.</p><p>Start-up accelerators have become popular in recent years, providing a combination of training, consulting and funding to fledgling businesses.</p><p>The accelerators vary hugely in terms of the resources on offer, investing anything between £15,000 and £100,000 in schemes lasting from three to 12 months, usually in exchange for a percentage of equity. More than 150 accelerators currently operate in the UK - up tenfold since 2009 - offering a combination of contacts, mentorship and financial backing to entrepreneurs building up their businesses from scratch.</p><p>Entrepreneur First, a self-described "talent investor", has backed more than 200 British businesses since it was founded in 2011, including AI start-up Magic Pony Technologies, which was bought by Twitter for an estimated $150 million in 2016.</p><p>Matt Clifford, CEO and co-founder, told Business Insider there was a surplus of accelerator programmes in the UK, describing the current system as a "broken model". He said: "You can count the number of accelerators with a functioning investment model on one hand."</p><p>According to the latest research by Nesta, an innovation foundation, around half of the UK's accelerators receive funding from larger corporations. Nike, EDF Energy and British Airways are among the big businesses that have launched their own schemes in the name of innovation.</p><p>Dr Christopher Haley, Nesta's head of new technology and start-up research, said many companies were backing accelerator schemes as a means of solving internal problems, adding that accelerators had "effectively become a form of outsourcing."</p><p>"My fear is that there are some corporate backers out there who don't know what they're doing, who haven't thought deeply enough about how their investments will pan out, and will end up leaving these start-ups without a home once they graduate."</p><p>Scott Campbell, director at Deloitte Ventures, suggested too many investors were engaging in "innovation theatre", offering the illusion of success with few tangible results.</p><p>"Accelerators can be hugely valuable to start-ups," he said. "But too often it's not clear what they are getting out of joining these programmes. At the same time, corporate accelerators can be unsure of the value they are trying to generate from a start-up."</p><p>Dr Haley, who is currently working on a new report looking at accelerators in the UK, commissioned by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, said its preliminary findings suggested accelerators could have a positive impact "but not all of them".</p><p>"It remains to be seen how many of these programmes will survive, since many are struggling with their business model," he said.</p><p>"Entrepreneurs should be aware that there is a significant variation between programmes, and be sure to undertake research before signing up."</p><p>Nike, EDF and BA did not respond to requests for comment.</p>

Industry leaders say there are too many accelerators operating in the UK's 'overcrowded' tech scene

New Delhi, Feb 19 () IT services firm Tech Mahindra on Wednesday announced on Wednesday the launch of T-Block Accelerator, an accelerator programme for Telangana Blockchain District.<p> The programme has been launched in partnership with the Telangana government and innovation management firm IBC Media.</p><p> The launch of T-Block is a step in continuation of the Telangana government's endeavour to make Telangana as the 'Blockchain Capital of the World', a statement said.</p><p> A pact had been signed between the Government of Telangana and Tech Mahindra to this effect in 2018, it added.</p><p> "This initiative is aimed at start-ups that have a strong blockchain use-case, thereby accelerating the start-up growth and therein contributing to the growth of the overall industry," the statement said.</p><p> Blockchains can broadly be defined as a new type of network infrastructure (a way to organise how information and value moves around on the internet) that create "trust" in networks by introducing distributed verifiability, auditability, and consensus.</p><p> Blockchain is seen as a technology with the potential to transform almost all industries and economies.</p><p> Jayesh Ranjan, principal secretary (information technology, electronics and communications department) in the Government of Telangana, said the accelerator will be a "torch-bearer" to multiple future blockchain accelerators in the country.</p><p> "Through this initiative, Tech Mahindra will enable creation of an ecosystem which will empower start-ups to solve tough business problems for clients across diverse industry verticals. The Telangana government will help provide the required regulatory framework to enable and promote Blockchain growth," the statement said.</p><p> Rajesh Dhuddu, global practice leader (blockchain) at Tech Mahindra, said the company aims to build a world-class support infrastructure for blockchain start-ups and make Hyderabad a destination of choice among several new-age entrepreneurs and blockchain evangelists.</p><p> "We look forward to successfully run the T-Block Accelerator and build the public blockchain ecosystem in India," he added.</p> Participating start-ups will receive mentorship and guidance from leading experts in the start-up and blockchain space.
