Scindia, speaking at the inauguration of <keyword id="21058244" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Mobile-Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="India Mobile Congress" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="India Mobile Congress">India Mobile Congress</keyword> and World Telecommunication Standardization (WTSA) 2024, said with the <keyword id="22506536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-6G-Alliance" source="keywords">Bharat 6G Alliance</keyword>, India hopes to contribute at least 10 per cent patents to 6G standardisation. SINGAPORE: An Indian-origin banker who was so consumed by the idea of making banking accessible for the unbanked, that he poured his entire life savings into a start-up that enables banks to set up branches in remote locations for just $150. <keyword id="57473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ram-Sharma" source="Orion">Ram Sharma</keyword>, a permanent resident in Singapore, and a veteran in the banking sector, having worked with <keyword id="232258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centurion-Bank" source="Orion">Centurion Bank</keyword> in India and Bank Albilad in Saudi Arabia, and his friend <keyword id="13786415" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ragu-nandan" source="Orion">Ragu Nandan</keyword>, set up a <keyword id="13786414" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fintech-start-up" source="Orion">fintech start-up</keyword> in 2016. Based in Singapore, Bank-Genie develops digital solutions that enables banks to overcome prohibitive costs to set up branches in remote locations and make banking accessible to unbanked populations, according to the Today tabloid. The germ of this idea took root in <keyword id="445" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sharma" source="Orion">Sharma</keyword>'s mind during a relatively mundane road trip he undertook in south India seven years ago. Sharma and his friend found themselves travelling for about 100 km just to find an ATM. “It struck me, why do ATMs remain here (in this town)? After this, there are villages where there are people living but there are no ATMs. Why should it be like that?” The Today tabloid quoted the 50-year-old as saying. Sharma poured his entire savings and “mortgaged everything else”, except the roof over his head, to raise over a million dollars to fund the company. Bank-Genie offers solutions that allow a bank to open branches and provide a suite of financial services with just “a tablet and a small Bluetooth printer and the card reader”, Sharma said in an interview with the tabloid. “Nothing more than that, and this will cost you around $150 to start a branch,” he quipped. In 2017, fintech managed to secure an undisclosed amount in a Series A funding backed by two key institutional investors: SBI Holdings Group, a Japan-based conglomerate that was spun-out of Softbank, and the Dutch development bank FMO. Such was the affordability of Bank-Genie's solution that Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, one of the largest commercial banks in the West African nation, was able to set up 600 branches in 90 days, including in remote areas — “somewhere up the mountains, somewhere in the valleys,” he said. In less than five years, Bank-Genie has ramped up its presence in Central Asian countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan as well as in Kazakhstan, where Sharma almost got stranded in around two years ago when borders started closing due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The start-up has acquired more than 30 client banks and financial institutions across Africa and Southeast Asia, with 13 banks in the Philippines alone. Scaling up its solutions took considerable effort, said Sharma, as the product built and installed for one bank cannot be replicated in another. “Each country has its own requirements. There are statutory requirements, there are compliance things which need to be met,” he was quoted as saying in the Today tabloid. “Some countries have regulations like customer data cannot reside outside the country due to privacy, so on and so forth. So banking is an animal which needs to suit each country differently,” Sharma observed. The start-up worked closely from the onset with the central bank of each country it stepped into. Sharma said that while the pandemic had scuppered some of his firm's expansion plans, it also presented opportunities. The growing need to practise social distancing had helped popularise the start-up's <keyword id="67227" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="genie" source="Orion">Genie</keyword> Q solution, which enables bank branches to take appointments, manage crowds and divert customers to less crowded branches where necessary. Looking ahead, while digital banking and cashless payments continue to proliferate into urban and advanced markets, Sharma believes that there is much work left to be done in remote geographies. “Our vision was always to bring a bank to every doorstep and democratise financial services so that financial services are accessible to the entire population in the world,” he said. With more than 40 staff globally, the Singapore-headquartered start-up has chalked up revenues to the tune of $3.1 million for the financial year ending March 2022, up from $840,000 during the previous financial year, Sharma added. This Singapore startup makes banking accessible by opening branches in remote locations for just $150

An Indian state led by a communist party has built the country’s biggest home for technology startups

For the last five years, a team of 150 engineers have been working day in and out in a tiny<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+village&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> Indian village</a> in <keyword id="239945" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tenkasi">Tenkasi</keyword>, about 650 kms south of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=chennai&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Chennai</a>, building a world-class context-aware helpdesk software called <keyword id="3860891" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zoho-Desk">Zoho Desk</keyword>. 
 This may sound like it's straight out of the plot of a movie, but <keyword id="191862" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sridhar-Vembu">Sridhar Vembu</keyword>, CEO of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=zoho&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Zoho Corp</a> has ensured it became a reality with his able guidance and vision.  Zoho Desk, which is the sixth product that the company has launched in 2016, uses customer data from past interactions and from other Zoho products, like Zoho CRM and <keyword id="3870877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="zoho-projects">Zoho Projects</keyword>, to organise tickets and intelligently present information to agents so that they can better understand a customer's problem and resolve it efficiently. 
 
It thus helps companies deliver the right solution at the right time. Its clean user interface packs innovations like Work Modes that help agents send context-aware responses, the Headquarters dashboard that provides the visibility managers need to make better decisions, and the Team Feed to help the entire company participate in customer service. 
 
As is the case with every Zoho product, Zoho Desk is also available for free up to 10 users. Paid plans begin at Rs 720 per user per month for the Professional Edition and increase to Rs 1,500 per user per month for the Enterprise version. 
 
The company's 15 acre Tenkasi facility from where Zoho Desk was built started out with three engineers who had moved from Chennai five years ago, which has today blossomed into a modest-size office housing 150 employees. Vembu himself makes it a point to visit this office once every three months. "Investment in building the entire centre at Tenkasi stood at Rs 3,000 per sq feet, excluding land costs," he revealed. To accommodate more employees, the company is also expanding its facility, which is going to be three times bigger than the existing office. 
 
 
 
From the very beginning of this plan, Vembu was clear about one thing- he had to first build a durable product, regardless of how long it took him. Infact, it was this very decision that stopped him from making Zoho Desk public despite it being ready for a year. Instead, the company used those 12 months to test out the product themselves and launch it in the market once they were absolutely sure of it. 
 
That seemed to paid off wonderfully for Vembu, as Zoho Desk currently boasts of handling 50 million tickets for 20 million users. Vembu is of the hope that out of 150,000 organizations across the world that Zoho counts as its customers, atleast one-third of them will become Zoho Desk users, making it a force to reckon with while it takes on two large rivals- global major <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=zendesk&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Zendesk </a>and local product <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=freshdesk&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Freshdesk</a>. 
 
Naturally, the road till here was fraught with challenges as Vembu attempted to build everything from ground up, but that hardly deterred the man who is known for building a one of the most profitable global tech company without any external funding. 
 
"We would have definitely built it faster if we had chosen a city like Chennai, but from the onset we were clear that we wanted to build a world-class product from rural India using the talent that most often than not remains untapped," he explained. 
 
Combine that with Vembu's belief that rural talent shouldn't have to leave home to find opportunity and you get an insight into the mind of the man who has proved that ‘a determined and sincere group of people can build path-breaking products anywhere.’ 
 
Sticking to their guns, the company developed local talents through its own university, Zoho University, recruited engineers through campus placements, then trained and mentored them. 
 At a time when almost all companies are moving from the suburbs to the cities to make a name for themselves, Zoho is busy reversing that trend to prove that you don't really need to be in <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> to build a world-class product.

Four Indians are among 32 young leaders selected by New York-based <keyword id="273784" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Asia-Society">Asia Society</keyword>, a global non-profit organization, as its 2015 class of young leaders to focus on shaping a bright future for the Asia-Pacific region, reported PTI. Mishi Choudhary, Sanjay Vijayakumar, Aarti Wig and <keyword id="2949033" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Manish-Dahiya">Manish Dahiya</keyword> have been named the Asia 21 Young Leaders by the society in its leadership programme that identifies and brings together Asia-Pacific's top leaders who are under 40 years of age. 

	Entering its tenth year, the Asia 21 Young Leaders Initiative is a network of over 800 young leaders from 30 nations. "They are all in their own ways focused on shaping a brighter future for the Asia-Pacific region, and confronting the most vexing challenges facing the region today," PTI quoted a statement by the society. 
 

	Let’s know the young leaders: 
 

	Choudhary is a technology lawyer and an online civil liberties activist. She is the founding executive director of SFLC.in, a pro-bono legal services organisation based in New Delhi that focuses on free speech and expression, privacy, software patents, network neutrality, internet governance and access to knowledge. 
 

	Vijayakumar is the chairman of the board of Startup Village, India's first incubator for public-private partnerships, promoted jointly by the Government of India and private sector entities. 
 Wig is co-founder of the Indian arm of the Yunus Social Business (YSB). She helped set up the world's first <keyword id="2949034" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Yunus-Social-Business-Fund">Yunus Social Business Fund</keyword> in Mumbai, which has funded seven social entrepreneurs across India. Dahiya is the executive director and global head of Energy Complex at <keyword id="333819" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Noble-Group-Limited">Noble Group Limited</keyword> and his work focuses on enabling the requirements of an energy-short world as it balances its demands for growth with the obligation of providing basic power requirements to the populace, the organisation said. 

	This year's class of 32 young leaders represent 22 countries and are divided almost evenly between men and women, with 50% working in the private sector, 44% in the non-profit sector, and 6% in the public sector. 
 Members of the class include social entrepreneur and champion of accountability in Nepal <keyword id="1121439" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narayan-Adhikari">Narayan Adhikari</keyword>, founder of a for-profit social venture that develops low-cost technology for women in the developing world <keyword id="2949035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Zubaida-Bai">Zubaida Bai</keyword> from the US, founder of the first massive open online course (MOOC) platform in Vietnam <keyword id="2949037" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Duong-Giap">Duong Giap</keyword>, Mongolia's first female chancellor of a state university Yanjmaa Jutmaan and Lisa Katayama of Japan, who is empowering social activists and entrepreneurs in Japan with leadership, design, and storytelling tools.
