Every year from April 15 to April 29, dozens of shooting stars streak through the sky in this spectacular show.</p><p>The meteor shower was most active from Sunday night to Monday morning, but it will remain visible for the next week.</p><p>On Tuesday night, the Lyrids align with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pink-moon-supermoon-april-2021-how-to-watch-2021-4">the April full moon, otherwise known as the "pink moon,"</a> which will rise at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/04/23/april-pink-moon-how-to-watch/">7:49 p.m. ET</a>.</p><p>This supermoon isn't actually pink, but it is very bright. It's a stunning sight all on its own, but seeing it during a meteor shower is a rare astronomical opportunity.</p><p>This moon shines so bright that it could make it difficult to see the Lyrids streaking through the sky. Next week's sky show could reach thousands of meteors per hour, making it a "meteor storm" as opposed to a shower, according to experts.</p><p>"This is going to be an all-or-nothing event," Bill Cooke from NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, said in a <a href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/Watch_the_Skies/tag/tau-herculids/">statement</a>, adding that visibility will depend on the speed of the comet. "If the debris from SW3 was traveling more than 220 miles per hour when it separated from the comet, we might see a nice meteor shower. If the debris had slower ejection speeds, then nothing will make it to Earth and there will be no meteors from this comet," Cooke said.</p><p>The last "meteor storm" to grace the heavens was the Leonid meteor storm of 1966, which lasted several hours — meteors fell at rates as high as 40 per second.</p><p>"People who watched the 1966 Leonid shower said they felt they had to clutch the ground, so strong was the impression of Earth moving through <keyword id="11895441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="space" source="Orion">space</keyword>," according to <a href="https://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/tau-herculid-meteors-may-intense-shower/">EarthSky</a>.</p><p>The Tau Herculids meteor shower is named after the star Tau Herculis, because from Earth, the meteors appear as though they are radiating from Tau Herculis. Experts expect next week's event to be much shorter than the hours-long Leonid shower.</p><h1><strong>How to watch the cosmic display</strong></h1><div type="image" title="Perseids meteor shower" height="1536" width="2048" msid="91856715" hostid="261"></div><p>Fortunately, the stellar light show will occur on a moonless night, making it easier to view. According to the <a href="https://www.amsmeteors.org/2022/05/possible-meteor-outburst-on-may-3031/">American Meteor Society</a>, the best window to see the cosmic display is from 12:45 to 1:17 a.m. ET on Tuesday, May, 31.</p><p>Though the light display should be visible from North and South America, stargazers in the Southwestern US and Mexico will have the best view, as that's where the meteor shower will be highest in the night sky.</p><p>"We believe that this event has a chance of being something spectacular," the society explained on its <a href="https://www.amsmeteors.org/2022/05/possible-meteor-outburst-on-may-3031/">website</a>. "When viewing events such as these, one should expect nothing extraordinary to happen, but certainly hope for the best!"</p>

They're famous for bright fireballs, which leave colorful trails of light imprinted briefly on the night sky.<div type="image" title="quadrantid" height="477" width="635" msid="80013675" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Most meteor showers come from the dust of a comet (a ball of ice and rock), but the Quadrantids are leftover bits of an <keyword id="6549794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asteroid">asteroid</keyword> (a bare <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> rock). </p><p>As Earth orbits the sun, it crosses the orbital path of asteroid 2003 EH1  each January, plowing through the trail of debris that the asteroid has shed. These bits of space rock burn up in the atmosphere and emit brilliant flares of light.</p><p>Unfortunately, the waning gibbous moon, at about <a href="https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/#Quadrantids">84% full</a>, will probably outshine about half of Saturday's meteors. In years when the skies are darker, the Quadrantids can produce as many as 200 shooting stars in a single hour.</p><h2>How to watch the Quadrantids</h2><div type="image" title="stargazer telescope watch meteor shower" height="1346" width="1795" msid="80013679" hostid="261"></div><p>While other meteor showers peak over a few days, the Quadrantids only give their best for about six hours. That will minimize its overpowering brightness.</p><p>Wait 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark. The celestial show should begin once night falls and last until dawn.</p><p>The shooting stars will radiate from the north, but you should be able to see them across the entire sky.</p><p>After the Quadrantids, the next meteor shower to look for will be the Lyrids, which peak on the night of April 21. </p>

In fact, the early morning hours of Saturday (November 18) may be the best time to watch. There's a new moon, so the sky will be very dark.</p><p>While the Leonids are famous for creating meteor storms or outbursts - showers of roughly 1,000 or more meteors per hour - this year's Leonids will produce 10-15 meteors per hour, according <a href="http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-leonid-meteor-shower" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">to Deborah Byrd at EarthSky.org</a>.</p><p>"The first great meteor storm of modern times was nearly 200 years ago; it was the Leonid shower of November 1833," Byrd said. "That famous shower had a major effect on the development of the scientific study of meteors. It's one reason the Leonids are so famous."</p><p>Although this year's show won't be quite that dramatic, the rate of shooting stars will still be several times higher than a typical night, and they're exceptionally bright and fast.</p><h2>How to watch the Leonid meteor shower</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://pictures.reuters.com/archive/JORDAN-METEOR-RP3DRIFVMYAA.html">Ali Jarekji/Reuters</a></span></p><p class="caption">A Leonid meteor - a fragment of Comet Tempel-Tuttle - streaks across the night sky.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The best time to watch the Leonids is between midnight and dawn. Don't go out too late, though, as pre-dawn twilight can wash out dark skies hours before the sun rises in many locations.</p><p>Telescopes, binoculars, or other equipment isn't required to see Leonid meteors. In fact, staring through a tube of any kind will just limit your view of the whole sky and decrease your chances of seeing the streaks of light. Clear skies, your eyes (with glasses, if needed), and a bit of patience are all you need.</p><p>Move to a remote location away from the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/worst-light-pollution-skyglow-map-2016-6">light pollution of nearby towns and cities</a>, make yourself comfortable, and set aside a good chunk of time to enjoy the show.</p><p>"Perhaps the key work to remember in meteor observing is patience. Most meteor showers will not produce a spectacular display, but will instead produce a steady, reliable show - sometimes with a few surprises," the American Meteor Society <a href="https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-faq/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wrote on its website</a>. "Meteor watching is like watching a graceful, natural fireworks display, and you never know when or how bright the next 'shot' will be."</p><p>The Leonids produce the fastest and brightest meteors of all the showers, since they pummel Earth's atmosphere at nearly 45 miles <em>per second</em>. That's about 200 times faster than a speeding bullet.</p><p>The precise direction you need to look in the night sky varies depending on your location, but the meteors will radiate from the constellation Leo the lion. Don't miss out on this year's Leonid meteor shower, which is expected to have ideal conditions for many parts of the US. They can leave behind glowing trails of debris that shine in the sky for up to a second, sometimes appearing orange. </p><p>The Taurids come in two different streams, which coincide this week. The Southern Taurids are debris from Comet Encke, a ball of ice, rock, and dust that orbits the sun. The origin of the Northern Taurids is still debated. They could be a stream of dust grains left behind by an asteroid, though <a href="https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article/386/3/1436/1060178">some scientists think</a> the Northern Taurids also came from Comet Encke, but were separated from the Southern Taurids by the distant gravitational pull of Jupiter. Once the moon sets, a little after midnight, the show begins. Look to the Taurus constellation - that's the area of sky where the shooting stars appear to originate (hence the meteor shower's name).</p><p>The Taurids run on a 10-year cycle, and they made <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-taurid-meteor-shower-2015-11">a big appearance in 2015</a>. The Taurids meteor shower sends fireballs streaking across the sky this week. Here's how to spot them.

Oluseyi has seen the stars from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-etiquette-tips-for-first-timers-2024-9">many cruises</a>.</li><li>As long as the ships dim their lights, passengers should be able to stargaze from the sea.</li></ul><p>Astrophysicist Hakeem M. Oluseyi has been to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/darkest-skies-by-state-watch-space-events-stargazing">dark sky parks</a> and observatories all over the world, but some of the best stargazing he's done has been in the middle of the ocean.</p><p>As long as cruise ships are mindful of their light pollution, he said, they can be a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-place-to-stargaze-us-2018-7">great way to stargaze</a>.</p><p>In the past, Oluseyi partnered with Princess Cruises and Discovery to bring stargazing programs on board the ships. He's seen some spectacular sights on cruises, including the northern lights and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-night-looks-like-aoraki-mackenzie-international-dark-sky-reserve-2023-5">other galaxies</a>.</p><p>Here are Oluseyi's tips for the best stargazing on cruise lines, including seeing eclipses, galaxies, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-astronaut-stunning-timelapse-video-northern-lights-space-auroras-2024-8">northern lights</a>, and meteor showers on your next cruise.</p><h2 id="0af27c65-bcf7-42d1-a27f-9daffdb5bc0a">Get a wake-up call for the northern lights.</h2><div type="image" title="brilliant neon streaks of light in the night sky show the northern lights over a quiet stretch of water" height="1397" width="2145" msid="113239260" hostid="261" sizebytes="88328"></div><p>Oluseyi has been on five cruises in various parts of the world. "The most amazing one was a trip to Norway on a cruise called Chasing the Northern Lights," he said. That's when he saw the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-northern-lights-dazzle-night-sky-across-the-us-europe-2024-5">aurora borealis</a>, aka the northern lights, for the first time.</p><p>"There are certain astronomical phenomena that sort of just brings the universe to your doorstep, and the northern lights, for me, was like that," he said.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saw-northern-lights-surprising-photos-misleading-2024-5">northern lights</a> are only visible at night. To make sure you don't miss them, you can see if your cruise offers wake-up calls when the lights appear. Many cruises do.</p><p>Moreover, location and timing are important. The northern lights are visible most often in northern latitudes including Canada, Alaska, and northern Scandinavia.</p><p>You likely won't see them year-round, however. The fall and spring equinoxes are the best time for viewing the northern lights, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/content/tips-viewing-aurora">NOAA notes</a>. </p><p>Winter can also be a good time, according to<strong> </strong>a Viking Cruises representative who told BI over email that daylight only lasts a few hours north of Scandinavia during winter time, offering more opportunities to see this spectacular light show.</p><h2 id="339bc823-5b6b-48a4-91e2-a4a550c03618">Choose a destination with clear skies for stargazing.</h2><p>Some parts of the world have better skies for stargazing than others.</p><p>In particular, "the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-traveling-to-canary-islands-spain">Canary Islands</a> and Chile are some of the best places to stargaze on the globe," Paul Grigsby, Holland Cruise's vice president of revenue planning and deployment, told Business Insider via email.</p><p>Both destinations have cultivated reputations as astrotourism sites and have areas that are dark sky reserves. Plus, Chile's latitude puts it right under the Milky Way.</p><p>If you don't mind chillier weather, remote destinations like the Arctic and Greenland also take passengers far from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-dark-skies-look-like-how-many-more-stars-than-cities-suburbs">cities' light pollution</a>. Keep in mind, though, that the sun sets late during the Arctic summer, so nights are short.</p><p>You might also want to time your trip with a meteor shower, like the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-see-perseids-meteor-shower-fireballs-jupiter-mars-northern-lights-2024-8">Perseids in August</a>. The nice thing about that is that you should be able to see the celestial show from almost anywhere, Oluseyi said.</p><p>Though, if epic stargazing is your goal, you should try to avoid areas with notoriously <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-know-before-v">cloudy weather</a>. "I'm not going to cruises in Seattle or London," Oluseyi said.</p><h2 id="1edb23a3-146e-4433-88b7-efdfb3a27541">Chase a solar eclipse from the ocean.</h2><div type="image" title="People watching a solar eclipse from a ship" height="636" width="1024" msid="113239261" hostid="261" sizebytes="37368"></div><p>Cruise lines are already gearing up for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/plan-trip-next-total-solar-eclipse-spain-iceland-greenland-2024-4">eclipses in 2026</a> and 2027.</p><p>The 2026 eclipse will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia, and part of Portugal, according to<a target="_blank" href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/"> NASA</a>.</p><p>Holland America, Cunard, and Princess are just a few of the cruise lines planning trips near some of these destinations for the 2026 eclipse.</p><p>For the 2027 eclipse, Egypt's pyramids will have a spectacular view and Viking is planning a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vikingrivercruises.com/cruise-destinations/egypt/total-eclipse-on-the-nile/2027-cairo-cairo/index.html">Nile River cruise</a>.</p><p>Oluseyi chased eclipses for a decade and said you need to be in the right place and have clear weather. The weather can turn quickly "because of the temperature drop that accompanies the moon shadow," he said.</p><p>Being on a boat may offer some flexibility. "The deck team can make decisions to reposition based on weather and visibility reports and will do all they can to ensure guests see these events," Grigsby said.</p><h2 id="04b4929b-36c4-4569-81f0-4259d792bf67">See something new in the Southern Hemisphere.</h2><p>For those who live in the Northern Hemisphere, crossing the equator offers some new views of the sky.</p><p>"What's really dramatic about the Southern Hemisphere is the galactic sky that you don't really get in the Northern Hemisphere," Oluseyi said.</p><p>In the Southern Hemisphere, the star-packed center of the galaxy, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3-d-map-of-the-milky-way-galactic-bulge-2013-9">galactic bulge</a>, is directly overhead.</p><p>There are also two satellite galaxies — the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronomers-share-images-of-galaxies-from-retired-telescopes-2022-6">Large and Small Magellanic Clouds</a>. The first time he saw them, Oluseyi said he couldn't stop staring. They're "so dang big, bright, and ever-present," he said. </p><p>Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Viking all offer cruises to Australia and New Zealand, southern Africa, and South America. You can see the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds year-round but keep in mind that the best southern hemisphere stargazing occurs in March through September when the sky is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advice/southern-hemisphere-cheat-sheet">dark</a> for longer.</p><p>You can also get a better view of objects in the night sky during a new moon when there's no moonlight to drown them out.</p><h2 id="d5b4f9b6-a94d-47ac-9ad8-5f4566a6ffc3">Stargazing only works with the deck lights off.</h2><p>Cruise ships can have their own <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worst-light-pollution-skyglow-map-2016-6">light pollution</a>, which significantly diminishes how well you can see the stars. "The lights can be so bright that you can't really see the dimmer objects, and most of the cool stuff is dim," Oluseyi said.</p><p>When the lights are down, the unobstructed view can be spectacular. "I have been literally all over the world to dark sky locations," Oluseyi said, "but, man, being out in the middle of the ocean — and when they turn off the deck lights — it is one of the best."</p><p>Some ships turn off their deck lights so passengers can see the skies better. You may want to inquire before you book about the cruise line's policies on this practice.</p><p>Viking's rep said the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/giant-phantom-jellyfish-rare-viking-cruise-submersible-2024-6">cruise line's</a> special bird-safe lighting mode helps keep birds from flying into windows but also allows passengers to see stars.</p><p>If your ship is dark enough, you might still want some help seeing the stars. You can probably leave <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-basin-national-park-family-vacation-stargazing-festival-tips-2023-11">your telescope</a> at home. The waves make it too unstable to view objects well. However, wide-field binoculars will let you see more than your naked eye, Oluseyi said.</p><h2 id="77052574-22be-4997-90b9-053fb392df93">Oluseyi's general tips for stargazing wherever you are.</h2><div type="image" title="A person looks at a total eclipse through a telescope with sunset colors in the horizon behind her." height="1920" width="2560" msid="113239262" hostid="261" sizebytes="31260"></div><p>Once it's dark, you want it to stay dark. "Eye adjustment is a very precious thing," Oluseyi said. It takes 30 minutes for your eyes to acclimate to the darkness, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advice/how-to-turn-your-iphone-screen-red-for-astronomy">The BBC</a>. </p><p>Avoid peeking at your <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/is-dark-mode-better-for-your-eyes">bright phone screen</a> because once that light hits your eyeballs, they'll have to readjust again.</p><p>You can also use your phone's settings to apply a red filter, which will help your eyes stay adjusted to the night sky.</p><p>You'll want to prepare to be outside for a while. </p><p>"It can get cold at night," Oluseyi said. His advice for stargazing from an observatory is to dress warmly and bring snacks. But it applies anywhere. You'll want to stay comfortable and awake so you don't miss the view.</p><p>"You'll find yourself freezing," he said. "You'll find yourself sleepy, but it's so worth it."</p>
