<keyword id="328347" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Angel-Network">Indian Angel Network</keyword> (IAN), which is India’s first and world’s largest angel investor network, has invested an undisclosed amount in <keyword id="6550201" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Staqu">Staqu</keyword>, a Gurgaon-based research start-up focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), working in automated image understanding technology. 
 On behalf of IAN, it was <keyword id="1710874" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bikky-Khosla">Bikky Khosla</keyword>, Neeraj Singal and Ajay Gupta who led the funding round, which as per sources will be used to further build technology and build up the team. Khosla would also be joining the Staqu board. 
 
Founded in 2015, Staqu’s core team includes researchers and engineers. 
 “We plan to invest this round to expand the computational strength of our <keyword id="3438817" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="VGrep-Lab">VGrep Lab</keyword> (AI research lab at Staqu) and fuel it with clusters of GPUs and other technical resources. Currently, we are applying our research to solve pressing problems in the e-commerce sector. In the near future, we are planning on use it to address issues across other market segments, too. Throughout the funding process, our ideas were constantly cross-questioned, which helped us set a clear vision and goals,” said Atul Rai, co-founder and CEO said. 
 
Staqu uses AI and engineering for image processing, deep learning, computer vision, NLP and overall improvement of users’ daily mobile experience. 
 
“IAN is extremely excited about Staqu and its proposition. Search is becoming very complex and consumer experience demands precise results of articles being searched. Staqu AI engine is the best that we have seen and can help increase the sales of its e-commerce customers by delivering superior customer experience. It can also create alternate revenue streams for its OEM customers. The team is rock solid with background in research and product development. <ul><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="6550201" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="staqu">Staqu</keyword> founder Atul Rai has confirmed that the startup is profitable. </li><li>The AI and facial recognition startup shot to fame for its work with the <keyword id="5720359" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Police-Force">Indian police force</keyword>, where it has helped solve 1,100 cases. </li><li>The startup now wants to raise $5 million in the next round of funding.</li></ul>Indian Artificial intelligence and facial recognition startup Staqu is known for partnering with Indian police forces to nab criminals. The four year old startup seemed to have made moolah in the process too. Staqu’s founder Atul Rai said that they turned profitable two quarters back, in an exclusive interview with Business Insider. The startup also did it with minimum resources. It has raised only one round of funding –$650,000 from Indian Angel Network. Having achieved profitability which does not come easy to young startups, it now wants to scale up its business. It is looking to raise $5 million, and not surprisingly already got a thumbs up from a few investors. Staqu came into being when Rai was reading a news report from National Crime Report Bureau which said that 70% of criminals in India were repeat offenders. “This thought triggered me to build something for homeland security,” he said. The startup landed its first deal with the Rajasthan police force after the <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/alwar-lynching-how-rajasthan-is-becoming-the-hate-crime-capital-of-india-1820613.html">Alwar lynching</a>. After a flurry of successes, police officials started recommending Staqu to others in the force. Staqu uses facial recognition to identify criminals. Its AI-powered app allows police forces to carry the data in the back of their pockets and use the information as needed. Every time a criminal is nabbed, the police official can take a picture and fingerprint and upload it on the app. Till date, the startup helped the police forces of Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Telangana solve over 1,100 cases. Indian Army is also one of its clients, where it helps conduct aerial imaging analysis. Rai divides technology in security into four divisions – passive monitoring, active monitoring, proactive monitoring and predictive analysis. In homeland security, government just holds 30% of the market while private sectors hold the rest. Rai now plans to bring many more new trends in security – from voice analysis to catch frauds over calls (for example phishing cases with banks). The voice analysis could be language independent and Staqu is also looking at developing a proactive predictive analysis technology where they can study the criminal history of an area to give real time alerts to the police. The whole process was and is exceedingly time consuming. However, the new technology is equipped to do the same ‘search’ quicker and more accurately. The new tech also enables the police to compare faces of the suspected law offenders to the department’s existing database of previously known offenders. It furthermore also plans to integrate the national database into the technology. This would include the information of civilians as well, which will be obtained from driving licences, passport records and other biometric documents. They also plan to configure the system for smarter and tighter security at airports, railway stations and urban hubs and use it to monitor ‘actions’ 24/7 and trigger an alert if a person or a vehicle behaves suspiciously. It is also being considered for enhancing VIP security. AI technology will also be useful in the quick detection of accidents, traffic situations, fire and other hazards. Furthermore, it will help enforcing traffic rules by using its ability to detect objects like helmets. These two state governments are looking at AI for governance and development

New Delhi, Apr 5 () Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has written to over 92,000 NGOs appealing them to assist the government in identifying Covid-19 hotspots and delivering services to vulnerable groups. Kant, who is heading the Empowered Group (EG 6) on coordinating with private sector NGOs and international organisations, has also written to all chief secretaries urging them to instruct the local administration at the district level to utilise the physical and human resources made available by NGOs and civil society organisations (CSOs), an official statement said. The government had on March 29 constituted 11 empowered groups to suggest measures to ramp up healthcare, put the economy back on track and reduce misery of people as quickly as possible post the 21-day lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic. "CEO Niti Aayog has written to over 92000 NGOs/ CSOs registered on the Darpan portal of Niti Aayog, appealing them to assist the government in identifying hotspots and deputing volunteers and care givers to deliver services to the elderly, persons with disabilities, children, transgender persons, and other vulnerable groups; to create awareness about prevention, social distancing, isolation, and combating stigma; to provide shelter to homeless, daily wage workers, and urban poor families; set up community kitchens for migrants," the statement said. It further said that the empowered group (EG 6) conducted detailed deliberations with 40-plus prominent CSOs and NGOs working in different parts of the country and with different communities. "Several challenges and issues raised by these CSOs were addressed by the EG6 to facilitate their working in the field during this crisis," it added. The statement said the EG6 has contacted start-ups, namely AgVa, Biodesign Innovation Lab, Kaeaenaat, Qure AIDrona Maps, mFine, MicroGo and Staqu, working on innovative ventilator designs, testing tools, and tracking solutions to understand their scale and possible contributions. Industry representatives and the EG 6 deliberated in detail on several challenges on critical issues of health-care intervention, pertaining to ramping up production and procurement of ventilators, personal protective equipment (PPE), testing kits, in collaboration with several other EGs; apart from ways to step up the relief and rehabilitation and information dissemination, it added. Industry representatives have also shared in detail the activities undertaken in public advocacy, philanthropy and, CSR by way of running factory kitchens for preparing, distributing free food in coordination with local administration; and making available factory hospitals/ premises/ guest houses as quarantine and shelter facilities. The other members of the Empowered Group include Dr Vijayaraghavan, (Principal Scientific Adviser), Kamal Kishore (Member, NDMA); Sandeep Mohan Bhatnagar (Member, CBIC) and senior officials of various ministries.
