Indian startup Staqu has built a thermal camera which can detect COVID-19 positive cases even in crowded areas. The technology can alert the system if anyone in the crowd has a body temperature of above 37°C. It will also examine heat signatures directly through the camera. The camera which has a range of 100 metres can effectively work in places like airports, malls etc. It will then send real-time alerts and will help tracking people with positive cases. As many possible suspects are absconding from hospitals and quarantines, this technology would be a Godsend for the authorities. “Our latest technology removes human intervention in early stages of detection; through heat wave analysis and more, the technology helps in proactively taking preventive efforts to reduce the risk of the spreading the virus. We are hopeful that the government and other authorities would make the best of this advancement,” said Atul Rai, CEO and Co-founder, Staqu. The latest technology is a part of the startup’s existing video analytics product JARVIS. Staqu works on futuristic technologies like AI and facial recognition. <ul><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="6550201" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="staqu">Staqu</keyword> founder Atul Rai has confirmed that the startup is profitable. </li><li>The AI and facial recognition startup shot to fame for its work with the <keyword id="5720359" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Police-Force">Indian police force</keyword>, where it has helped solve 1,100 cases. </li><li>The startup now wants to raise $5 million in the next round of funding.</li></ul>Indian Artificial intelligence and facial recognition startup Staqu is known for partnering with Indian police forces to nab criminals. The four year old startup seemed to have made moolah in the process too. Staqu’s founder Atul Rai said that they turned profitable two quarters back, in an exclusive interview with Business Insider. The startup also did it with minimum resources. It has raised only one round of funding –$650,000 from Indian Angel Network. Having achieved profitability which does not come easy to young startups, it now wants to scale up its business. It is looking to raise $5 million, and not surprisingly already got a thumbs up from a few investors. Staqu came into being when Rai was reading a news report from National Crime Report Bureau which said that 70% of criminals in India were repeat offenders. “This thought triggered me to build something for homeland security,” he said. Its AI-powered app allows police forces to carry the data in the back of their pockets and use the information as needed. Every time a criminal is nabbed, the police official can take a picture and fingerprint and upload it on the app. Till date, the startup helped the police forces of Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Telangana solve over 1,100 cases. Indian Army is also one of its clients, where it helps conduct aerial imaging analysis. Rai divides technology in security into four divisions – passive monitoring, active monitoring, proactive monitoring and predictive analysis. In homeland security, government just holds 30% of the market while private sectors hold the rest. Rai now plans to bring many more new trends in security – from voice analysis to catch frauds over calls (for example phishing cases with banks). The voice analysis could be language independent and Staqu is also looking at developing a proactive predictive analysis technology where they can study the criminal history of an area to give real time alerts to the police. EXCLUSIVE: This Indian startup has made a profit solving 1,100 police cases with just one round of funding

<keyword id="328347" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Angel-Network">Indian Angel Network</keyword> (IAN), which is India’s first and world’s largest angel investor network, has invested an undisclosed amount in <keyword id="6550201" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Staqu">Staqu</keyword>, a Gurgaon-based research start-up focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), working in automated image understanding technology. 
 On behalf of IAN, it was <keyword id="1710874" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bikky-Khosla">Bikky Khosla</keyword>, Neeraj Singal and Ajay Gupta who led the funding round, which as per sources will be used to further build technology and build up the team. Khosla would also be joining the Staqu board. 
 
Founded in 2015, Staqu’s core team includes researchers and engineers. 
 “We plan to invest this round to expand the computational strength of our <keyword id="3438817" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="VGrep-Lab">VGrep Lab</keyword> (AI research lab at Staqu) and fuel it with clusters of GPUs and other technical resources. Currently, we are applying our research to solve pressing problems in the e-commerce sector. In the near future, we are planning on use it to address issues across other market segments, too. Throughout the funding process, our ideas were constantly cross-questioned, which helped us set a clear vision and goals,” said Atul Rai, co-founder and CEO said. 
 
Staqu uses AI and engineering for image processing, deep learning, computer vision, NLP and overall improvement of users’ daily mobile experience. 
 
“IAN is extremely excited about Staqu and its proposition. Search is becoming very complex and consumer experience demands precise results of articles being searched. New Delhi, Apr 5 () Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has written to over 92,000 NGOs appealing them to assist the government in identifying Covid-19 hotspots and delivering services to vulnerable groups. Kant, who is heading the Empowered Group (EG 6) on coordinating with private sector NGOs and international organisations, has also written to all chief secretaries urging them to instruct the local administration at the district level to utilise the physical and human resources made available by NGOs and civil society organisations (CSOs), an official statement said. The government had on March 29 constituted 11 empowered groups to suggest measures to ramp up healthcare, put the economy back on track and reduce misery of people as quickly as possible post the 21-day lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic. "CEO Niti Aayog has written to over 92000 NGOs/ CSOs registered on the Darpan portal of Niti Aayog, appealing them to assist the government in identifying hotspots and deputing volunteers and care givers to deliver services to the elderly, persons with disabilities, children, transgender persons, and other vulnerable groups; to create awareness about prevention, social distancing, isolation, and combating stigma; to provide shelter to homeless, daily wage workers, and urban poor families; set up community kitchens for migrants," the statement said. It further said that the empowered group (EG 6) conducted detailed deliberations with 40-plus prominent CSOs and NGOs working in different parts of the country and with different communities. "Several challenges and issues raised by these CSOs were addressed by the EG6 to facilitate their working in the field during this crisis," it added. The statement said the EG6 has contacted start-ups, namely AgVa, Biodesign Innovation Lab, Kaeaenaat, Qure AIDrona Maps, mFine, MicroGo and Staqu, working on innovative ventilator designs, testing tools, and tracking solutions to understand their scale and possible contributions. Industry representatives and the EG 6 deliberated in detail on several challenges on critical issues of health-care intervention, pertaining to ramping up production and procurement of ventilators, personal protective equipment (PPE), testing kits, in collaboration with several other EGs; apart from ways to step up the relief and rehabilitation and information dissemination, it added. Industry representatives have also shared in detail the activities undertaken in public advocacy, philanthropy and, CSR by way of running factory kitchens for preparing, distributing free food in coordination with local administration; and making available factory hospitals/ premises/ guest houses as quarantine and shelter facilities. The whole process was and is exceedingly time consuming. However, the new technology is equipped to do the same ‘search’ quicker and more accurately. The new tech also enables the police to compare faces of the suspected law offenders to the department’s existing database of previously known offenders. It furthermore also plans to integrate the national database into the technology. This would include the information of civilians as well, which will be obtained from driving licences, passport records and other biometric documents. They also plan to configure the system for smarter and tighter security at airports, railway stations and urban hubs and use it to monitor ‘actions’ 24/7 and trigger an alert if a person or a vehicle behaves suspiciously. It is also being considered for enhancing VIP security. AI technology will also be useful in the quick detection of accidents, traffic situations, fire and other hazards. Furthermore, it will help enforcing traffic rules by using its ability to detect objects like helmets. Last month, <a href="https://www.livemint.com/AI/DIh6fmR6croUJps6x7JW5K/Meet-Staqu-a-startup-helping-Indian-law-enforcement-agencie.html">Staqu</a>, a Gururam-based startup also helped Indian law enforcement agencies with AI technology via an app that offered criminal identity registration and tracking missing persons. The programme was used by the Punjab Police, under the Punjab <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">Artificial Intelligence</keyword> System (PAIS).

<keyword id="328347" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Angel-Network">Indian Angel Network</keyword> (<keyword id="36015" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="ian">IAN</keyword>), which is world’s largest network of angel investors, has invested Rs 4 crore as funding in <keyword id="3259573" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wiwigo">Wiwigo</keyword>.com, an inter-city taxi service provider. 
 The <keyword id="3505565" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="inter-city-cab-market">inter-city cab market</keyword> stands at $20 billion as of now, with several players making good use of the growing market. Wiwigo, which is an online platform for intercity travel, has its USP in addressing the expensive problem when passengers have to travel just one way. The company claims to help them save almost 45% of current fares. 
 
As of now, the cab-operator is present in over 40 cities, offering roundtrip and multi-city travel options. With the new funding, it aims to expand its operations to over 100+ cities by yearend.

In India, the intercity car rental market in India stands at approximately $9 Billion, growing at 12% annually. However, around 90% of this market is still unorganized. Started in April last year, Wiwigo aims to organize this market. 
 Talking of the funding, it was led by IAN investors <keyword id="3505566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Priyank-Shankar-Garg">Priyank Shankar Garg</keyword> &amp; <keyword id="438872" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Harsh-Chitale">Harsh Chitale</keyword>, and Garg would also be joining the Wiwigo board soon.

IAN invests in Wiwigo to get a taste of the inter-city cab market

Lastly, reduction of corporate tax for MSMEs is a welcome step but larger Indian conglomerates looking to compete with global peers will continue to find the tax rate challenging.

As India strengthens its position on the global map, the need for skilled youth is crucial. The budget’s focus on extending market relevant training for the youth and setting up 100 international skill centers across the country, is a positive move. The emphasis on science and technology for students, and launch of SWAYAM, will further empower India’s youth for the future. I am glad to witness the increasing focus on cybersecurity, which is critical to securing the economy’s digital transformation. The reduction of corporate tax for MSMEs is a welcome move and will boost the economic growth. The momentum in the implementation of GST is promising and I look forward to seeing it unfold in the coming months.

Digital India is a winner in this budget with provisions for Bharat Net, PoS Terminals etc. Telcos will benefit as this will accelerate adoption of data services. However the specific Industry demands related to clarity on pending tax issues have mostly remained unaddressed.

 The <keyword id="6360189" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Union-Budget">Union Budget</keyword> 2017 doesn't provide any direct benefits to startups this year. Besides, the tax exemptions from capital gain are rather difficult to meet, at least in the early stage of 3-5 years for a startup. However, the newly announced exemptions for income tax of common people and well-rounded push towards digital payments will ultimately increase the buying capacity, along with mobile phone utility. These institutional changes, I believe, will push towards the growth of new age digital startups, albeit indirectly.
