Education start-ups in India seem to be the hottest targets right now, going by the kind of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> they are attracting from local and global investors. A couple of days ago, Delhi-based start-up <keyword id="1974964" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Avanti-Learning-Centres">Avanti Learning Centres</keyword> raised an undisclosed amount in <keyword id="948731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="seed-funding">seed funding</keyword> from <keyword id="1894311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pearson-Affordable-Learning-Fund">Pearson Affordable Learning Fund</keyword> (<keyword id="1954796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PALF">PALF</keyword>). Two more <keyword id="6365770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="angel-investors">angel investors</keyword> also took part in the round. Avanti will use the <keyword id="1974977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Seed-round">seed round</keyword> to develop an <keyword id="1974975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Online-offline-learning">online-offline learning</keyword> &amp; monitoring system, create more <keyword id="755302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="educational-content">educational content</keyword> and build new <keyword id="68244" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Learning-centres">learning centres</keyword>. Currently, the <keyword id="1044076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="education-start-up">education start-up</keyword> operates stand-alone and in-school centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Roorkee and Puducherry, besides helping the <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> in three Tibetan schools in Uttarakhand and Karnataka. 
 
This is the second investment in India that Pearson has made through PALF, and the third overall since the fund was launched in July 2012. 
 In November this year, <keyword id="1954793" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Global-education-leader">Global education leader</keyword> Pearson’s inaugural <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/These-2-Peer-selected-Start-upsShared-150K-Investment-To-Boost-Low-cost-Education/articleshow/26512179.cms">edupreneur programme</a>, jointly launched by PALF and US-based investor Village Capital, came to a close with <keyword id="1954794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Experifun">Experifun</keyword> and <keyword id="1467859" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sudiksha-Knowledge-Solutions">Sudiksha Knowledge Solutions</keyword> walking off with a seed funding of $75,000 each. The <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> will enable the start-ups to further develop their low-cost education ventures and assist underprivileged school children. 
 Pearson launched PALF in July 2012 with a capital of $15 million. Investments are made into private companies that offer <keyword id="1974987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Affordable-educational-services">affordable educational services</keyword> and schooling in Asia, <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword> and Latin America. 
 Set up as a <keyword id="456748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="non-profit">non-profit</keyword> in March 2010 by <keyword id="258061" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akshay-Saxena">Akshay Saxena</keyword> and <keyword id="1974967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krishna-Ramkumar">Krishna Ramkumar</keyword>, Avanti Learning Centres supports students from low-income families (those with a family income of $5,000 per annum or below) and prepares them for <keyword id="1974989" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="College-entrance-exams">college entrance exams</keyword>, especially the highly competitive engineering and medical entrance tests. Students can study up to 18 hours a week at a centre and need to pay only $20 per month. Costs are kept low as a large network of volunteers and partners, including universities, public schools, policy makers and private sector businesses, help with teaching and administration. 
 Instead of traditional lectures, Avanti follows a comprehensive programme including <keyword id="1951606" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="book-learning">book learning</keyword>, <keyword id="144248" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Videos">videos</keyword>, <keyword id="1974990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Peer-learning">peer learning</keyword> (developed by Dr <keyword id="1974994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Eric-Mazur">Eric Mazur</keyword>, the company’s chief academic advisor and a physics professor at <keyword id="53675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="harvard">Harvard</keyword>), <keyword id="956032" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Self-study">self study</keyword> &amp; <keyword id="969316" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="group-work">group work</keyword>, <keyword id="1974991" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Recorded-lectures">recorded lectures</keyword>, <keyword id="140811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="mentoring">mentoring</keyword> and doubt-solving. Students are enrolled after a highly selective two-stage process.

Seeders</keyword>, the seed funding network of <keyword id="1975008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Club-Ah">Club Ah!</keyword> It is the network’s maiden investment in India after its launch in the country. Ah! Seeders puts its money into very early stage companies and typically invests in the range of Rs 25-50 lakh.

With this fresh round, Info Edge has put in a total of Rs 71.5 crore and holds around 55.81% stake in Applect (on a fully diluted and converted basis).

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Vermont_law_school_oakes_hall_20040808.jpg">Wikipedia</a>Vermont <keyword id="85709" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law-school">Law School</keyword>, which isn't attached to a university.</div>The New York Times' <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/31/education/law-schools-applications-fall-as-costs-rise-and-jobs-are-cut.html?smid=pl-share&amp;_r=0">most emailed story</a> Thursday analyzed the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/law-school-applications-are-declining-2013-1">sharp drop in law school applications</a> and the brutal impact it could have on legal education.
<a href="http://www.law.uchicago.edu/faculty/leiter">University of Chicago law professor Brian Leiter</a> made the story's most ominous prediction: He estimated 10 <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> schools would close within the next decade.
Now, law school closures are rare.
We spoke with Washington University Law Professor Brian Tamanaha, author of <a href="http://www.press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/F/bo14279340.html">Failing Law Schools,</a> who could recall maybe one law school closure in the 1980s. (He couldn't remember the school's name.)
But Tamanaha agreed that some law schools could be in trouble now that so many folks seem to be abandoning the notion of getting a JD.
The law schools whose deans should be freaking out a little are so-called stand-alone law schools that aren't attached to universities, like <a href="http://www.nyls.edu/">New York Law</a> or <a href="http://www.tjsl.edu/">Thomas Jefferson</a>.
With no university to fall back on, "they run like any other business," Tamanaha said.
Most stand-alones aren't ranked or have low rankings and are extremely dependant on tuition to operate, says law professor and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/law-school-bubble-2012-9">law school "scam" exposer Paul Campos</a>.
"They have negligible endowments and almost no other sources of income," Campos told BI. "If their tuition revenues decrease markedly they may become unsustainable operations very quickly."
These schools also rely on loans to cover their daily operating expenses, Tamanaha pointed out. A dramatic drop in law school applicants might make banks charge them higher rates.
"To the extent that applications are collapsing, that makes the [stand-alone] schools riskier borrowers," he said.
Some stand-alones may closing or merge with other stand-alones to stay afloat.
Law schools attached to big universities are probably here to stay, though.
"It's really hard to pull the plug on the law school at a big university," Tamanaha said, "Law school alumni tend to be very generous donors. A university would be reluctant to alienate its alumni donors."

The Law School Crisis Could Crush 'Stand-Alone' Schools

The <keyword id="1575" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="congress" source="Orion">Congress</keyword> on Monday accused the Centre of not accepting the truth and alleged that since May 2020, the Modi government's preferred strategy to deal with the Chinese incursions in Ladakh can be summed up with "DDLJ -- Deny, Distract, Lie and Justify". He said the fact is that there is no comparison between 1962, when India went to war with China to defend its territory, and 2020 after which India has acquiesced to Chinese aggression with denials followed by 'disengagements' in which India has lost access to thousands of square kilometres of territory. Jairam alleged that "EAM Jaishankar's implied cheap shot at Rahul Gandhi for meeting the Chinese ambassador in 2017 is ironic to say the least coming from someone who as ambassador to the US during the Obama administration presumably met with leading Republicans. "Are opposition leaders not entitled to meet diplomats from countries that are important from a trade, investment and security standpoint?" he asked. The Modi government should have been truthful from the start and taken the opposition into confidence by discussing the China crisis in parliamentary standing committees and debating the issue in Parliament. "At a very minimum it should have held detailed briefings for leaders of major political parties," he said. "It is extraordinary that EAM Jaishankar has admitted on several occasions that he has no idea why China has turned aggressive on the Line of Actual Control, notwithstanding the unusually frequent contacts between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping and the PM's boast that he enjoys a special 'Plus One' relationship with President Xi," Ramesh said. He said, "No amount of obfuscation can hide the fact that the Modi government has sought to cover up India's biggest territorial setback in decades that followed PM Modi's naive wooing of President Xi. "We suggest that EAM Jaishankar and the government spend more time trying to get Chinese troops out of Depsang and Demchok and less time on blaming the opposition for their own incompetence," he said. This semester, Drexel University in Philadelphia opened the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship, America's first stand-alone entrepreneurship school. Currently, 15 students are enrolled as entrepreneurship and innovation majors, with nine additional students working toward one of the school's four minors, <a href="http://articles.philly.com/2014-10-27/business/55451114_1_close-school-drexel-university-business-school">Philly.com reports</a>. 
While many business programs, including Drexel's own Bennett S. LeBow College of Business, offer entrepreneurship courses, Close gives students a chance to learn the ins and outs of being an entrepreneur on a much deeper level. 
In a typical business program, students might take six to eight entrepreneurship courses. But at the new school, they are able to take 20 to 25 specialized courses, says Chuck Sacco, Drexel's entrepreneur in residence and director of external relations for the Close School.
The freestanding school also gives students a chance to explore aspects of being an entrepreneur that are often overlooked in other programs, including soft skills such as networking, team building, presentation skills, and creativity. "It's a very immersive program, and that's why it's separate from the business school," Sacco says. 
The opening of such a school highlights a larger trend in business: the growing popularity of entrepreneurship as a career path. It's no longer the norm for employees to stick with the same company for decades; Sacco estimates that some students will hold at least 10 jobs between graduation and the time they turn 35. Because of this, many recent college graduates turn to entrepreneurship as a means of forging their own career paths and taking control of their futures. 
Additionally, many large companies are looking for employees who can think creatively and innovate like entrepreneurs, even within a corporate environment. "With globalization and technology, big companies are as much under threat of change as anything else," Sacco says. "We oftentimes talk with students who might not necessarily want to start their own business, but they need to be what's called an intra-preneur - an entrepreneur within a company."

One study of graduates from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School found that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/more-mbas-become-entrepreneurs-after-business-school-2014-7">five times as many</a> MBAs started their own companies right away in 2013 than in 2007. At North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/entrepreneurs-in-business-school-2014-10">one-fifth of 2014 graduates</a> held a concentration in entrepreneurship. 
While Close is the only freestanding school as of now, it's possible other universities will follow suit. "We're certainly a trend-setter," Sacco says. "I think a lot of other universities are looking at the model that we've established and seeing how it goes, seeing how it works."

Everything there is to know about the Han Solo 'Star Wars' stand-alone movie

OK, so I'll be honest here — I didn't exactly intend to travel to a foreign country by myself. The problem is that I'm a little more impulsive than I may be willing to let on, and it got the best of me. 
 So, when I booked a <keyword id="3934241" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="round-trip-flight">round-trip flight</keyword> to Ireland solely based on the fact that it was insanely inexpensive, I hadn't totally thought it through. All I knew was that I was booking a flight. 
 
What I hadn't thought about was the whole "going by myself with no travel experience whatsoever" thing. It didn't hit me until far after I had purchased the ticket, received confirmation, and told my boss that I would be out of the country during certain days. And it only hit me because he asked, "Who are you going with?" And for the first time I had to think about the fact that the answer was "no one." 
 
Ultimately I'm really happy I went by myself. It was such a good learning experience. And while it scared the daylights out of my mother ("You're so young! You can't go by yourself to a foreign country! What's going to happen to you?"), it was the best choice for me, and I'm really happy that I did it. 
 In the future, I might look to do my next <keyword id="865957" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="international-trip">international trip</keyword> with a friend, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Here's what I learned. 
 
1. It's pretty bad--- to travel by yourself This is one thing that I didn't realize until I was in it. Almost everyone I encountered — from the older woman I sat next to on the plane to the 20-somethings that I met on the trip — was shocked and impressed that I was going it alone. To be honest, I hadn't really thought that part through. I didn't really have the time to think about that. But it's pretty cool to be 22 and <keyword id="100790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="traveling">traveling</keyword> to a different country, just because. Own it. Be proud. 
 
2. Pack light ... 
I know, you've heard this before. But it's true. I was gone for a week so I only had a carry-on and a personal item, and I may have even overpacked. Dress for the weather, but even in the cold you won't need much unless you're climbing Mount Everest ... but I don't think that's something that you would do by yourself. Maybe. Anyway, it's a good idea to bring clothes that will match each other so you don't need to waste time thinking about your outfits. 
 
Check the weather channel to see what typical weather is like. It rains almost every day in Ireland, so I made sure I had a pair of rain boots and a rain jacket. But that might not be something you would need in San Diego. 
 
3. ... but also, do your research 
Yes, you should pack light. And you should check the weather. But if there's one thing I wish I had packed, it would be a pair of heels. I went to Dublin and Galway, and I quickly learned that Irish young adults get dressed up for a Friday night out. Like, really dressed up compared to what I'm used to. I went out in jeans, a sweater, and combat boots and wore my beanie into the bar (it was cold!). I stood out like a sore thumb. 
 
That being said, I wish I had known that everyone gets dressed up for casual drinks on Friday night. I would have at least classed myself up a bit. And maybe put on some makeup. I wasn't expecting it at all, because everyone is so modestly dressed during the day, and they're definitely not demonstrative of class in their dress so I figured going out would be the same. Culture guides are super easy to find on the internet and will make preparing for a trip a lot easier. 
 
It will also be important to know what people dress like if you're going to a country with strict traditional customs surrounding their dress. You don't want to attract attention to yourself that might put you in a controversial situation, and you want to respect the traditions of those countries. 
 
4. Don't be afraid to meet people ... 
I don't think there was a single day when I wasn't with someone doing something. It's so easy to be social when you're traveling by yourself, but it's also really easy to be antisocial, and you can easily get stuck in the trap of being antisocial if you don't want to put in the effort. 
 
If you want to make friends, you have to do a little legwork. And I'll tell you, Tinder and Bumble are your friends! If you're worried guys will think you're just trying to hook up and that's not what you want, say straight off the bat that you're a foreigner in town for the week. I started most of my conversations with "Hey! I'm American, in town for a week — what's the best place to go around here for dinner?" 
 
Most people will be cool with it and won't mind playing tour guide for the night. And if you make it about your travels more so than what most people use dating apps for, then you'll be fine. And if a guy does make it seem like he's more into sex with a foreigner than bringing someone out on an adventure, don't meet up with him. 
 
If you're staying in a hostel, you'll easily meet other people around your age traveling. If you're staying in a B&amp;B, you'll be likely to meet some locals. When I landed in Dublin, the first thing I did was stop for breakfast and made friends with my waiter. I'm telling you, it's way easier to make friends than it seems — especially since when people hear your accent, they're likely to be friendly and ask what brings you to their country. 
 
5. ... but don't be afraid to take some alone time 
I had my days to myself, and it was so lovely. I'm really impatient, and I don't like feeling like I need to stick to a structured plan in case something comes up (like I said, I'm impulsive after all), so traveling without friends made it easier for me to do the things that I wanted to do without feeling exhausted afterward. I could leave the museum when I wanted to. I didn't feel like I needed to spend money on every sight there was to see. I could take a nap when I was tired. 
 
Being by myself also gave me a great amount of time to just sit and think. I've been trying to get in the habit of practicing mindfulness every day, and doing so while traveling made my experience really wholesome and worthwhile. 
 
6. Don't cram things in 
You're never going to experience an entire city on vacation. Don't exhaust yourself trying to squeeze every last museum and statue and obscure historical site into your day. When I was in Galway, I had plans to go to the museum, but I ended up walking along the coast and the causeway for two hours and didn't even care that I didn't make it to the museum. Don't be afraid of missing out on something because something else comes up. Hey, everything you missed will just be another reason to go back. 
 
7. You'll learn more about a city from its people than its tourist attractions 
I wish I had spent more time talking to everyone that I could. I met a lot of people while I was in Ireland, but there were definitely so many more people I could have met had I just asked them simple questions about themselves. 
 
I learned so much about the city through its people. I went there thinking it would be kind of like America — after all, they speak English and it's a country influenced by Western traditions — but it was so different in so many beautiful ways, and that was ultimately what I loved so much about being there. 
 
8. Take time zone change into consideration 
Jet lag is seriously real. It didn't help that my phone was on airplane mode and the time didn't change, so I had to do the math when I set my alarm at night and do the math when I woke up in the morning. Ireland is five hours ahead of New York, so it wasn't difficult to do the math, of course, but when you just wake up and it's 7 in the morning but your clock is saying it's 2, it gets pretty confusing. 
 
The worst part, however, was that the first place that I stayed in Dublin didn't have any windows. It was a tiny Airbnb that had everything I needed, and it was so cheap that I couldn't complain, but the fact that I was adjusting to a different time zone and I stayed somewhere that had no windows really made it difficult for me for the first day or so. 
 
9. Eat, eat, eat 
Food is different everywhere. We can know this simply by looking at the United States. Pizza from New York and pizza from Massachusetts are not the same and never will be. The food is going to be different everywhere you go, and you should absolutely relish in it without being concerned about your weight for the duration of your vacation. Sure, if you're living in a different country for an extended period of time, that's one thing. But if you're only there for a week like I was, take it all in. 
 
I don't eat meat very often because it makes me just so sick, but my first day in Ireland, I saw a plate of a full Irish breakfast speed past me to a neighboring table, and the bacon looked so beautiful that I needed to have it. It didn't even matter how my body felt afterward. 
 
Ask the locals what they like. Ask your waiter what the best thing on the menu is. A week of indulgence is not going to kill you, but looking back on it and wishing you hadn't missed out on all the good bacon very well could.

According to a new study, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29416057" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published in the journal Scientific Reports</a>, women come across as more attractive when they are in a group, rather than when they're alone.So, as well as making it look like you have friends and an active social life, that group picture might also give the impression you're better looking than you really are.The scientists, from Flinders University in Adelaide, conducted two experiments to test out the theory, which previous researchers have dubbed "the cheerleader effect."In experiment 1, participants were presented with photos of women in a group or alone. The results showed that the location of the other faces in the group, called "distractor faces," didn't impact the cheerleader effect, and women in the group were rated as more attractive.Experiment 2 involved manipulating the location of the target faces themselves to the far left, right, or centre of the screen. Again, participants said the faces in the group pictures were more attractive and the person's location in the group had no impact."Together, our results show that the cheerleader effect is a robust phenomenon, which is not influenced by the spatial arrangement of the faces in the group," the researchers concluded.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/people-look-more-attractive-in-groups-2013-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research from 2013</a> showed how the cheerleader effect could work. Results of the study showed how people in collages of individual photos were rated as more attractive.
