The <keyword id="20247120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-stock-exchange-of-india" source="keywords">National Stock Exchange of India</keyword> (NSE) is preparing to expand its commodities segment with plans to launch new contracts in the coming months, aiming to make a significant impact on commodities trading. NSE Chief Business Development Officer Sriram Krishnan stated that the exchange is focusing on non-agricultural commodities, citing their relative certainty compared to agricultural ones. These new contracts will be selected from a wide range of commodities approved by the <keyword id="19901204" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="securities-and-exchange-board-of-india" source="keywords">Securities and Exchange Board of India</keyword> (Sebi). Krishnan highlighted that the exchange already has around 240 members actively participating in commodities trading, including foreign portfolio investors and algorithmic traders. Krishnan expressed confidence in the potential growth of India's commodities market, explaining that there is significant opportunity to expand, particularly in key products such as crude oil and natural gas. He also emphasised the importance of cash-settled contracts, which were a key request from foreign portfolio investors. On the broader outlook for the NSE, Krishnan predicted that the market capitalisation of NSE-listed companies could double within the next decade, reaching USD 12-13 trillion from its current USD 5.5 trillion, fueled by the growing Indian economy. This growth would be driven by existing companies as well as the addition of new listings, including the many unicorns that are not yet listed. Despite India's large equity and derivatives markets, Krishnan pointed out that its commodities market remains underdeveloped. He noted that in developed economies, the commodities market often exceeds the size of the equity market, serving as a cornerstone for sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure. The NSE's commodities push is also backed by NSE Clearing Ltd., which has a substantial Rs 10,500 crore settlement guarantee fund, offering security to market participants. Regarding the NSE’s upcoming <keyword id="19898327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo" source="keywords">IPO</keyword>, Krishnan confirmed that the exchange has not yet received approval from Sebi. The exchange has reapplied for a "no-objection" certificate and will proceed with the IPO once it receives approval and completes the necessary regulatory steps. (With inputs from agencies)

NSE eyes growth in commodities market, set to launch new contracts soon

Recently, the National Stock Exchange (<keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords">NSE</keyword>) announced that its total <keyword id="21953893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="client-accounts" source="keywords">client accounts</keyword> exceeded 20 crore, a remarkable growth from the 16.9 crore figure it was at just eight months ago. The achievement underscores India's rapidly evolving investment landscape and growing <keyword id="20031464" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-participation" source="keywords">retail participation</keyword> in <keyword id="20033427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-markets" source="keywords">capital markets</keyword>. "This expansion reflects strong investor confidence in India's growth story," said Sriram Krishnan, Chief Business Development Officer at NSE. He attributed this growth to the widespread adoption of mobile trading applications and increasing <keyword id="22504349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-awareness" source="keywords">investor awareness</keyword>, aptly supported by government <keyword id="20327350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-initiatives" source="keywords">digital initiatives</keyword> that have democratized market access, particularly benefiting investors from Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities. While Maharashtra led the list with 3.6 crore accounts, UP was next with 2.2 crore accounts, followed by Gujarat with 1.8 crore accounts. Rajasthan and West Bengal also made it to the list with 1.2 crore accounts each. Notably, these five states collectively account for approximately 50% of total client accounts, while the top ten states represent about three-quarters of the total registrations. Additionally, the unique registered investor base on NSE stood at 10.5 crore, having crossed the 10-crore mark on August 8, 2024. <h2><keyword id="20849031" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="young-investors" source="keywords">Young investors</keyword> take the lead</h2>Another notable trend that emerged from NSE's latest report is the significant increase in young investor participation. The proportion of investors under 30 years has nearly doubled, rising from 22.9% in March 2018 to 40% by September 2024. Middle-aged investors, aged between 30 and 39, have maintained their participation in the markets, albeit with a slight hit. On the other hand, investors aged between 40 and 49 have witnessed a dip in market participation, dipping to 15.5% in September 2024, as opposed to 20.3% as of March 2018. Similar downtrends were noticed in other age brackets as well, namely 50-59 and 60+ age cohorts. Financial analysts suggest that younger investors bring a new dynamic to the market, often favoring high-growth, technology-driven investments. In contrast, older investors have traditionally leaned toward more stable and conservative options.

NSE client base surges past 20 crore mark; young investors lead market growth

Capital markets regulator <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sebi" source="keywords">Sebi</keyword> has rejected a proposal by the National Stock Exchange (<keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords">NSE</keyword>) to extend the <keyword id="20378397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trading-hours" source="keywords">trading hours</keyword> in the equity derivatives segment citing a lack of feedback from the <keyword id="21563800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-brokers" source="keywords">stock brokers</keyword> community. "Currently, there is no plan to extend the timings as Sebi has returned our application as the stock brokers have not given the feedback that Sebi wanted. So, as of now, the extended time frame (plan) is shelved," NSE MD and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan said in a post-earnings analysts call. This came after the NSE had urged Sebi to extend trading hours in the equity derivatives segment in a phased manner. This was aimed at potentially curtailing the overnight risk arising from global information flow. Sriram Krishnan, Chief Business Development Officer of NSE, had told PTI in September that the bourse was planning a session from 6 pm to 9 pm after a break from the closure of the regular session from 9.15 am to 3.30 pm. Based on the response, a gradual extension of the <keyword id="21563801" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-timing" source="keywords">market timing</keyword> till 11.55 pm was proposed on the lines of commodity derivatives. To begin with, only index derivatives in phase 1 were proposed to be available followed by single stock options and others. In 2018, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) allowed stock exchanges to set their trading hours in the equity derivatives segment between 9 am and 11.50 pm. This was similar to the trading hours for the commodity derivatives segment, which are currently fixed between 10 am and 11.55 pm. The move was part of Sebi's efforts to enable the integration of stocks and commodities trading on a single exchange. With regard to NSE's IPO, Chauhan said that "situations remain as in". Last month, he said that NSE is awaiting approval from Sebi to kickstart the initial public offering process. The NSE's listing plans have been on the backburner amid a Sebi probe against the exchange and some of its top officials. During the fourth quarter ended March 2024, NSE reported a 20 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit at Rs 2,488 crore. Further, the consolidated operating revenues stood at Rs 4,625 crore for the January-March quarter of the financial year 2023-24, marking a surge of 34 per cent year-on-year. Apart from trading, the total revenue was also supported by other revenue lines, including listing, index services, data services and co-location facility. Sebi rejects NSE's proposal to extend trading hours

Leading stock exchange <keyword id="6354646" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nse" source="Orion">NSE</keyword> on Wednesday said it has entered into a data licensing agreement with derivatives marketplace <keyword id="123766" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cme-group" source="Orion">CME Group</keyword> for WTI <keyword id="6395010" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="crude-oil-and-natural-gas" source="Orion">crude oil and natural gas</keyword> contracts. The pact will allow <keyword id="53581" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-stock-exchange" source="Orion">National Stock Exchange</keyword> (NSE) to list, trade and settle rupee denominated <keyword id="140139" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nymex" source="Orion">Nymex</keyword> WTI crude oil and natural gas derivatives contracts for Indian market participants, the bourse said in a statement. The addition of the contracts will expand the NSE product offering and its overall commodity segment. NSE has applied to the <keyword id="6355630" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="securities-and-exchange-board-of-india" source="Orion">Securities and Exchange Board of India</keyword> (SEBI) seeking approval to launch the additional futures contracts. "On receiving approval from Sebi, NSE would make available trading in futures of these two global benchmarks, which will be settled in <keyword id="164031" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="inr" source="Orion">INR</keyword>, on the NSE platform. "The Nymex WTI Crude Oil and Natural Gas (Henry Hub) contracts are amongst the world's most traded commodity derivatives contracts generating interest from across the globe," Sriram Krishnan, Chief Business Development Officer, NSE said. This would help the exchange broaden its energy basket and these contracts will be beneficial for the Indian market participants to meet their price risk management activities as well as trading objectives, he added.
