<keyword id="19896255" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kashmir" source="keywords">Kashmir</keyword> is likely to receive light snow and rain next week, bringing an end to the prolonged dry spell in the valley, the weather office said on Friday. It said dry weather is likely to continue till January 24 with generally cloudy weather on Saturday evening. There is a possibility of light snow at isolated places in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir on January 25, an official of the <keyword id="19938289" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="met-department" source="keywords">MeT Department</keyword> said. He said from January 26-28, light rain or snow is likely over scattered places in J-K. "From January 29-31, as per the indications of different models, the possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at many places is very likely, the official said. A dry and largely snowless winter in Kashmir has resulted in freezing nights and warmer than usual days. Kashmir is currently under the grip of "Chilla-i-Kalan", a 40-day harsh winter period when a cold wave sweeps the region and temperatures drop considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies as well as water in pipes. The chances of snowfall are the highest during this period and most areas, particularly the higher reaches, receive heavy snowfall. However, Kashmir has been going through a prolonged dry spell and a 79 per cent deficit in rainfall was recorded for December while there has been no precipitation in most parts of the valley in the first fortnight of January. 'Chilla-i-Kalan' will end on January 31. However, the cold conditions will continue after that with a 20-day 'Chilla-i-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day 'Chilla-i-Bachha' (baby cold). <keyword id="19910854" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="srinagar" source="keywords">Srinagar</keyword> city recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, dropping slightly from the previous night's minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, the officials said. Qazigund recorded a low of minus 5 degrees while in the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir it was minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, they said. Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Kokernag town settled at minus 1.4 degrees Celsius and in Kupwara at minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Kashmir's dry spell likely to end next week

<keyword id="41568" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srinagar">Srinagar</keyword>, Kashmir was cut off from rest of the country on Monday as the arterial <keyword id="720343" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-Srinagar">Jammu-Srinagar</keyword> national highway and Mughal road were closed due to snowfall across the valley, leaving nearly 4500 vehicles stranded. "The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is closed due to accumulation of snow at many places, especially around <keyword id="924005" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawahar-tunnel">Jawahar Tunnel</keyword>," an official of the traffic control department said. He said snow clearance operations were in full swing and efforts were on to restore movement of stranded vehicles along the 260 kilometre road. The official said nearly 4500 vehicles, mostly trucks carrying essentials to the valley, are stranded along the highway at various places. Mughal Road, which connects the valley to <keyword id="6357972" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jammu">Jammu</keyword> division through Shopian-Rajouri axis, has been closed for several days due to heavy snowfall in the region. The officials said south Kashmir's Kulgam district received highest snowfall with two to three feet of snow accumulated at some places. Anantnag district has also received heavy snowfall between one foot and two feet, they said. The flight operations to and from Srinagar remained suspended for second consecutive day due to poor visibility, the officials said. The <keyword id="6437100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-temperature">minimum temperature</keyword> improved in most places in the valley due to the snowfall but still stayed below the freezing point, the officials said. Srinagar city -- the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir -- recorded a low of minus 0.9 degrees Celsius -- up from the previous night's minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, they said. The minimum temperature in Gulmarg tourist resort remained unchanged at minus 5 degrees Celsius on Sunday night compared to a night earlier. Pahalgam tourist resort, which also serves as a base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.7 degrees Celsius - plunging from minus 1.45 degrees Celsius on the previous night, the officials said. Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius, Kupwara, in the north, minus 0.3 degrees Celsius and Kokernag, minus 1.4 degrees Celsius. The MET Office said moderate to heavy snowfall, with isolated very heavy snowfall, was most likely to take place, especially in south Kashmir, Gulmarg, Banihal-Ramban, Poonch, Rajouri, Kistawar and Zanskar, Drass as well as on the higher reaches of Ladakh UT, over two days from Monday. "Overall, the snowfall will continue from Sunday to Tuesday forenoon with the occasional break. This may lead to the disruption of surface and air transportation, water-logging in plains of Jammu and Srinagar cities," the MET Office said. Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chillai-Kalan' -- the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies including the famous Dal Lake here as well as the water supply lines in several parts of the valley. The chances of snowfall are the most frequent and maximum during this period and most areas, especially in the higher reaches, receive heavy snowfall. While 'Chillai-Kalan' - which began on December 21 -- will end on January 31, the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir with a 20-day-long 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day-long 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold). Jammu-Srinagar national highway and Mughal road closed due to snowfall

Officials of the meteorological department said the <keyword id="6437100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-temperature">minimum temperature</keyword> dropped to minus 8.8 in Srinagar. "From today onwards there is going to be perceptible improvement in the night temperatures in both <keyword id="6360420" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JK">J&amp;K</keyword> and Ladakh," the officials said adding that the maximum temperature was 2 degrees Celsius in Srinagar on Saturday which is also the lowest maximum recorded this season. Sonam Lotus, director of the MeT department for J&amp;K and Ladakh told IANS that minus 8.8 is the lowest minimum temperature recorded after exactly 30 years in Srinagar. "In 1991 the minimum temperature recorded was minus 11.8 in Srinagar," Lotus said. The 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the 'Chillai Kalan' ends on Sunday, but not without leaving an indelible mark in the record book for ushering in one of Kashmir's coldest winters in living memory. The minimum temperature was minus 12.0 in Pahalgam and minus 8.0 in Gulmarg. Leh town of Ladakh had minus 16.6, Kargil minus 17.4 and Drass minus 26.2 as the night's lowest temperature. Jammu city had 5.8, Katra 5.4, Batote 1.1, Bannihal 0.6 and Bhaderwah minus 1.5 as the minimum temperature. Srinagar records minus 8.8 degrees, coldest night in 30 years

At minus 6.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season so far, while the temperature in Ladakh's <keyword id="6522554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="drass-town">Drass town</keyword> to minus 29. "Srinagar recorded minus 6.6 as the <keyword id="10459092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-temperature-today">minimum temperature today</keyword> which is the coldest recorded so far this season. This record was surpassed during the last 10 years on December 25, 2018 when the minimum had dropped to minus 7.7 in Srinagar," an official of the MET Department said. "Drass town recorded minus 29 as the minimum temperature which is the lowest recorded today in Jammu and <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> and Ladakh," the official added. <keyword id="108228" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gulmarg">Gulmarg</keyword> recorded minus 9.2 and Pahalgam minus 9.5 as the night's lowest temperatures. Leh dips 13 degrees below freezing with dense fog around Jammu City

Snow likely in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in next two days

Asserting that it is fully prepared to fight a full-fledged war even in winters in eastern Ladakh, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> on Wednesday said if China created conditions for war, they will face a better trained, better prepared, fully rested and psychologically hardened Indian troops. In a statement, it said compared to physically and psychologically battle-hardened Indian troops, Chinese troops mostly are from urban areas and not used to hardships or prolonged deployment under field conditions. The Army' Northern Command headquarters made these assertions reacting to China's official media Global Times reports that India's operational logistics is not geared up adequately and it will not be able to fight through winters effectively. "This can best be attributed to ignorance. Indian Army is fully prepared and more than capable of fighting a full-fledged war even in winters in eastern Ladakh," a Northern Command spokesperson said here. "India is a peace-loving country and wishes to have good relations with its neighbours. India always prefers to resolve issues through dialogue. While talks are in progress to resolve the border issues with China in eastern Ladakh, at the military level it is well prepared for the prolonged stand-off," he said. He said altitudes in Ladakh range from "high to super-high altitude" and there is a lot of snowfall - up to 40 feet after November. "Coupled with this, the temperature dipping down to minus 30 to 40 degree Celsius is a usual phenomenon. Wind chill factor makes matters even worse for the troops. The roads also get closed due to the snow. But despite all this, the most encouraging part for India is that the Indian soldiers have a huge experience of winter warfare and are psychologically tuned to operate at short notice," the spokesperson said. While these facts are known to the world, he said, adding the operational logistics capabilities, however, are hardly known. "Logistic capability relates to mobility, habitat and billeting, quality services for health, special rations, repair and recovery, heating systems, high-quality weapons, ammunition, quality clothing, and so on. While much of these capabilities existed earlier and troops could simply plug and play, a lot has also been boosted since May this year when China showed first signs of aggression," he said. The spokesperson said it is important to understand that the Army has the experience of Siachen, the highest battleground in the world, where conditions are much more demanding than the frontiers with China. "Traditionally there were two routes for moving into Ladakh, that is through Zojila (Srinagar-Leh Highway) and Rohtang Passes (Manali-Leh). Recently India commissioned a third road from Darcha to Leh which is much shorter distance-wise and less prone to closure," he said. The spokesperson said completion of Atal tunnel on the Rohtang route has force multiplied the logistic capacities. "In addition, we have a large number of airbases with the help of which we can maintain the Army well. Modern snow clearing equipment has also been placed on these routes to keep them open beyond November, thus giving us more time for daily maintenance of the troops," he said. The spokesperson said special fuel and lubricants for tanks and armoured personnel carriers have also been stocked adequately, including spares for their maintenance. "Water points and tube wells have been established for the troops and animals like mules and yaks. The living barracks have also been prepared which are comfortable and warm," he said. He said facilities such as the central heating system are some of the high points of these facilities. "Ammunition of various types including small arms, missiles and tank and artillery ammunition have also been adequately stocked. The medical system is also in place for any eventuality." The spokesperson said "China's concept has always been to win the wars without fighting, hence if they create conditions for war, they will come across better trained, better prepared, fully rested and psychologically hardened Indian troops. "These worries have been percolating in the minds of Chinese troops and are visible in Chinese media," he said. Efforts are on to provide a facilitation centre, hospitality &amp; protocol services, transportation, boarding and lodging, procurement of materials &amp; equipment, technical requirements, press publicity, a cultural programme, food, maintenance of snow slopes, area domination, security, medical camps, event management and other arrangements. Divisional Commissioner, <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword>, Baseer Ahmad Khan on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting of officials to review all arrangements put in place for the event. He directed officers concerned to set up round the clock control rooms at Srinagar, Tangmarg and Gulmarg in which officers from PHE, PDD, Medical, Police, SDRF and the Magistrates concerned will be deployed to monitor all activities with backup plan till the culmination of the mega sporting event. The Deputy Commissioner <keyword id="52395" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baramulla">Baramulla</keyword> will set a media centre in Gulmarg in which all requisite facilities should be provided to the national media. Besides, he will establish medical camps at various locations with doctors and other staff with medicine and ambulances.
