In another talk about mindset, Charlie Reeve found that employees with a growth mindset were constantly looking to adapt and to grow in their professional and personal worlds; they didn't believe that their talents and futures were predetermined.

Not only is empathy a quality of being a good person, it is also key to being a great leader. 
 
It helps us understand how to better communicate with and understand our superiors, peers, and employees. Do not underestimate this key characteristic. 
 
3. Angela Lee Duckworth: The Key To Success? Grit. 
 
 
 
Duckworth defines grit as "passion and perseverance for long-term goals." 
 
Grit is one of those intangible concepts that we still know very little about, but one thing is clear: The grittier we are, the more successful we become. 
 
This is just another reason to find your true passion and purpose in life and truly dedicate yourself to it.

I have recently been inspired by Mike Brady, president of Greyston Bakery in Yonkers, New York. His bakery operates in a radical way in order to help people — they have a policy called "open hiring," which means that they will hire anyone, no questions asked. 
 
In this TED Talk, Mike shares Greyston's mission, and Dion Drew, one of the employees, tells how the bakery affected his life. Dion's story is a powerful example of someone being given the reins of possibility and doing the most with it. Dion's story is a great example of the power of giving and the power of owning your own potential. 
 
9. Brené Brown: The Power of Vulnerability. 
 
 
 
Moments of vulnerability truly are inspiring, and they make way for the possibility of even greater connection and appreciation. 
 
When you are vulnerable, when you put a name to your resistance, it can be addressed, acknowledged, and worked through. When one of my clients opens up and shows his or her vulnerable side in our work together, I know success is guaranteed. 
 
10. Yves Morieux: How Too Many Rules at Work Keep You From Getting Things Done. 
 
This is a great talk about how our society's obsession with measurement and processes in the name of productivity are actually quite counterproductive. 
 
Human creativity and innovation does not flourish in these rigid systems — we must make room for more freedom and collaboration.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/strelka/25137587661/">Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design/flickr</a>Don't be fazed by failure.Having someone encourage me to "make lemonade out of lemons" is the kind of thing that makes me want to squirt some metaphorical lemon juice in their eye.Maybe it's that the phrase itself is kind of vague and patronizing - not the advice you want to give your friend who's just had a supremely stressful day at her big-girl office job.Which is why I was delighted to find a more sophisticated - and specific - framing of this strategy in a <a href="https://hbr.org/2017/06/to-build-your-resilience-ask-yourself-two-simple-questions">Harvard Business Review article</a> by Srikumar Rao.Rao, who is a former business school professor, says dealing successfully with setbacks comes down to two questions. I've paraphrased the questions below:Rao suggests that, if you analyze every tough experience this way, you'll become <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/11-signs-you-are-resilient-even-if-it-doesnt-feel-like-it-2016-7">more resilient</a> - resilience being what he calls the "new must-have executive skill." It's the ability, <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/basics/resilience">according to Psychology Today</a>, to get "knocked down by life and come back stronger than ever."The questions Rao shares are based on an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/perfect-reason-good-thing-bad-thing-who-knows-2011-5">ancient Sufi parable</a>, in which a father and son alternately experience bad luck and good fortune. Each time they experience one or the other, the man tells his gossipy neighbors, "Good thing, bad thing, who knows?"In other words, embrace the uncertainty, and remember those times when a seemingly horrible turn of events turned out to be a positive one. I thought back to my college experience - after getting rejected from almost every school I applied to, I wound up at my last choice. I had the time of my life, and can't imagine having gone elsewhere.I thought, too, of Spanx founder Sara Blakely, who <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sara-blakely-teaches-spanx-employees-to-embrace-failure-2016-6">told Business Insider</a> that she applauds failure - her own and Spanx employees'. Stanley Fallaw's findings are based on a survey of more than 600 millionaires in America conducted between 2015 and 2016."To build wealth, to build one's own business, to ignore critics and media and neighbors, you must have the resolve to keep pursuing your goals past rejection and pain," wrote Stanley Fallaw.She added: "Millionaires and other economically successful Americans who pursue self-employment, decide to climb the corporate ladder, or strive to create a financial independence lifestyle early do so by perpetually pushing on."She cites an example of multimillionaire Alan DeMarcus, who started at his uncle's HVAC business at age 14. After two-and-a-half years in college, he quit school once he landed a sales role at his uncle's business.The company eventually went bankrupt, but Alan had enough resilience and perseverance to build a successful refrigerant recovery business in the middle of the 2008 recession. "Those who pursue this path to economic freedom meet daily hurdles to becoming so in thanks in part to their neighbors, community (both in-person and virtual), and companies pursuing them for their financial and cognitive resources." Consider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-a-28-year-old-retiree-saved-70-of-her-income-in-new-york-city-2017-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">JP Livingston</a>, who retired early at age 28 with a $2 million-plus nest egg. She lived frugally, tucking away 70% of her take-home pay - 40% in investments, 60% in savings. Even as her income rose each year, she didn't succumb to lifestyle inflation; instead, she only saved more money. She had enough perseverance to stick to her goals and avoid "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lifestyle-creep-keeps-you-from-building-wealth-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lifestyle creep</a>" - the tendency to spend more whenever one earns more. Often, this urge comes from a subconscious desire to "keep up with Joneses"; it's a prime example of the daily hurdles Stanley Fallaw referenced that can prevent a person from reaching financial independence. Resiliency is also a key way entrepreneurs become self-made millionaires - surviving the ups and downs of building a startup into a successful business requires a lot of resilience and perseverance, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/types-of-self-made-millionaires-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Thomas Corley</a>, a researcher who separately studied self-made millionaires.
