New Delhi, Doctors, nurses and healthcare personnel fighting COVID-19 from the front lines have to spend many hours a day wearing face masks. Although it offers invaluable protection, health experts have stressed that sweating and the rubbing of the masks against the nose may lead to significant skin damage. However, following some simple tips like keeping the skin clean, well-hydrated and moisturised can help one avoid skin damage from face masks, according to a recent study, published in the Journal of Wound Care. Dermatologist D.M. Mahajan of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi also said that deeply moisturising the skin is important for people who need to wear masks for a long time. If possible, take off the mask for a while after maintaining some social distancing and keep changing the mask every 8-9 hours, the doctor said. "Doctors need to be very cautious as in this profession social distancing is not possible all the time. To avoid getting infected, they have to wear a mask which needs to have adequate tightness. It is very pertinent that there has to be an adequate pressure which can cause a fair amount of pressure on the nasal bridge, surrounding cheek and jawbone," Mahajan told IANS. Wearing masks for a long time can cause rashes, dryness, acne or pimple formation and dermatitis, the doctor said. Manjul Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Dermatology, <keyword id="136410" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortis-hospital">Fortis Hospital</keyword> in Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi said that surgical face masks and N95 respirator masks when used properly provide adequate protection against infectious diseases transmitted by respiratory droplets. "Surgical facemasks are commonly made up of polypropylene which is a non woven fabric. Disposable N95 surgical respirators consist of four layers and the innermost layer coming in contact with the skin is also made up of polypropylene," Agarwal said. "Although polypropylene is considered to be the safest of all plastics, it can cause skin allergies in rare cases, especially if the mask is wet and worn for long hours. "These masks also have a malleable aluminium nose strip placed for a tighter seal of the nose. This, in turn, can cause allergic <keyword id="8522171" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Contact-dermatitis">contact dermatitis</keyword>, frictional dermatitis and frictional melanosis over the nose," she told IANS. According to the doctor, the moisture which collects from <keyword id="1274231" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="exhalation">exhalation</keyword> inside the mask especially at body temperature can provide a perfect setting for the bacteria to thrive and may cause infections like folliculitis, especially in men with heavy beards. Pre-existing dermatoses like acne and fungal infections may also be aggravated due to sweat collection. "If any occlusive topicals like oil-based moisturisers and makeup are applied prior to the application of masks, they can lead to blockage of skin pores causing sebum accumulation and acne. The tight elastic bands stretching over the ears can cause pain and contact dermatitis in the retroauricular region," Agarwal said. "Frequent changing of the mask, mask free time in between if possible may be practised to prevent these dermatological adverse effects," she noted. For people with acne-prone skin, it may be worth avoiding some of the traditional acne treatments such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinoids as they make the skin further dry or irritable, said Rahul Arora, Associate Consultant Dermatology, Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi. This effect can be aggravated by the routine use of face masks. This, however, does not mean that people with sensitive skin cannot wear face masks. "If they feel that their skin is irritated it can help to use moisturisers that contain ceramides, <keyword id="341351" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Squalene">squalene</keyword>, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid that may rehydrate the skin and also serve as a barrier for the skin to protect it," he added. "Instead of a chemical company which has to change the pipes, all we have to do is change the organism," <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/joel-cherry-bb3bb838/">Joel Cherry</a>, Amyris' president of research and development, said in December.And changing the organism is precisely what Amyris did when it entered the health space in 2016. Instead of focusing exclusively on yeast, the company feeds the same sugarcane waste that it used for malaria treatments and biofuel to a host of microorganisms like E. coli and different kinds of fungus.The company can coax the microbes into making the scent of patchouli or sandalwood for Chanel perfume, or the moisturizing emollient in its own lineup of skincare products called Biossance, which have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sephora-skincare-gifts-2018-12#biossance-squalane-and-glycolic-renewal-facial-4">sold at big name retailers like Sephora</a> since 2017. Normally derived from shark livers, the ingredient is prized by the cosmetic industry for its ability to hold moisture and keep skin soft and pliable. But dozens of countries have banned shark hunting, which harms the species along with the ocean ecosystems. But olive oil does <a href="https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/171413/nutrients" target="_blank" rel="noopener">contain vitamin E</a>, which can help smooth hair and reduce frizz giving the appearance of hair growth, Scalia says. Vitamin E's <a href="https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminE-HealthProfessional/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">antioxidant effects</a> may also support a healthy scalp, which could promote hair growth, but more research is needed.<h2>Potential risks of using olive oil for hair</h2>Olive oil can help lubricate and moisturize hair to reduce dryness and protect against split ends, Lal says, but it can also be a risky choice depending on your hair type.Scalia recommends olive oil for people with curly, thick and coarse hair that is more prone to frizz and dryness. Olive oil applied to fine or straight hair, on the other hand, could potentially weigh it down and make it feel greasy.You also should not use olive oil in your hair if you have dandruff, Zito says. That's because olive oil promotes the growth of the yeast that causes <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-stop-dandruff" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dandruff</a>. "In individuals prone to dandruff, [olive oil] can actually worsen the condition like throwing kerosine onto a fire," Zito says. "The more often you apply it, the greater the chance of exacerbating the condition."Some people also claim olive oil can act as a heat protectant, but Zito does not recommend this. Extra virgin olive oil has a smoking point of 320 °F, Zito says, and many flatirons, wands, and curling irons reach temperatures much higher than that between 400 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit. "What this means is that at this temperature [320 °F], the oil begins to smoke, produce fumes, and create free radicals," which can damage hair Zito says. <h2>How to use olive oil for hair</h2>If you want to try out olive oil for your hair, Lal recommends applying cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil to the ends of the hair, not the scalp. The exact amount of olive oil your hair requires will vary from person to person, Scalia says, but it doesn't take much. You should use just enough to work it through the middle of your hair down to the ends. Olive oil is very hard to wash out, so Scalia recommends using it prior to shampooing your hair as a moisturizing treatment. You can leave it in for about 15 minutes and then wash it out with a clarifying shampoo and a replenishing conditioner. But people over the age of 65 typically have a weaker immune system due to age and therefore should get one of the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5916a2.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">specialized vaccines</a> so they are equally protected against the flu and <a href="https://www.idsociety.org/news--publications-new/articles/2019/studies-show-flu-vaccine-reduces-risk-of-hospitalization-in-children-and-death-in-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">severe</a> complications that could lead to hospitalization. <h2>Types of flu shots for seniors</h2>There are two types of flu vaccines that the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/acip/summary/summary-recommendations.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CDC recommends</a> for people over 65:<ol><li>High dose flu vaccine, also called Fluzone</li><li>Adjuvanted inactivated flu vaccine, known as Fluad</li></ol>You can get both the high-dose and adjuvanted flu vaccines at your doctor's office, but you can also usually find the high dose vaccine at pharmacy clinics like <a href="https://www.cvs.com/immunizations/flu/faq?icid=flushots-tab-faq" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CVS</a>. There haven't been any studies comparing the high-dose and adjuvanted flu vaccines, and the CDC doesn't state any preference about which vaccine to use. However, some doctors may prefer the high-dose vaccine because it has been <a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/119870/download" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in use since 2009</a>, while the adjuvanted vaccine came out <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/adjuvant.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more recently in 2015</a>.<h3>High dose flu vaccine</h3>The high dose flu vaccine has<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/qa_fluzone.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> four times as many antigens</a> as a regular flu shot, and is available specifically for <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/qa_fluzone.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">people over 65</a>. Medical term: <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/feature-stories/detail/how-do-vaccines-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Antigens</a> are pathogenic molecules that trigger the immune system to release antibodies designed to fight infection. Vaccines contain antigens in order to alert the immune system to specific pathogens, like the flu virus, so that it's more equipped to fight those pathogens if they later invade your body.The higher antigen load means that even if your immune system has a weaker reaction, having more virus particles present helps your body create more antibodies - ideally enough to protect you from infection, Haynes says.A<a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1315727?query=featured_home" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> study published in 2014</a> found that the high dose flu vaccine was 24% more effective in preventing flu in people over 65, compared with the standard vaccine. Moreover, seniors who get the high dose vaccine are also<a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600%2817%2930235-7/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> less likely to be hospitalized</a> for the flu.<h3>Adjuvanted inactivated flu vaccine</h3>Another vaccine<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/adjuvant.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> specifically designed for seniors</a> is the adjuvanted, inactivated flu vaccine. An adjuvant is a substance that increases your body's reaction to virus proteins.Medical term: <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/how-fluvaccine-made.htm">Inactivated flu shots</a> contain dead flu viruses. The antigens in the vaccine still provoke an immune response so you build up antibodies against the flu virus. Inactivated flu vaccines are typically recommended for people who are <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/vis-statements/flu.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pregnant</a>, are over the age of 65, or who have certain medical conditions.The substance added to the adjuvanted flu vaccine is<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/adjuvants.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> squalene oil</a>, also called MF59, which is found naturally in plants and animals. "This gives an extra boost to the immune response to the vaccine which will then lead to greater protection from infection," Haynes says.Because the adjuvanted vaccine spikes your immune response, it may also have<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/adjuvant.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> more side effects</a> than the standard vaccine, including irritation at the injection site, muscle aches, and headache. However, the vaccine offers great protection for seniors - a<a href="https://academic.oup.com/jid/article/222/2/278/5758057" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 2020 study</a> found that people over 65 who got the adjuvanted vaccine were less likely to be hospitalized for the flu, compared with those who got the standard vaccine.<h2>Insider's takeaway</h2>Getting any flu shot is helpful for seniors, but the high dose and adjuvanted flu shots are the best option to guard against illness and hospitalization. There is also little risk involved with getting the flu vaccine.
