It featured two teams with a combined record of 1-10, and it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/josh-freemans-historically-awful-debut-was-made-worse-by-the-vikings-disastrous-game-plan-2013-10">ended up being a total snoozer</a>.
While ratings were <a href="http://deadspin.com/vikings-giants-was-crap-and-you-watched-it-anyway-1450176306">still strong</a>, <keyword id="56400" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="ESPN">ESPN</keyword> has to be a bit frustrated that a game <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/espn-nfl-monday-night-football-2011-9">it paid $105 million to broadcast</a> ended up being so much worse than expected.
This is becoming a trend.
So far this year, four of the network's first eight MNF games have been worse than expected.
What do we mean by that?
We looked at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-vegas-overunder-win-totals-for-the-2013-nfl-season-2013-9">the preseason Las Vegas expected win totals</a> for teams in each MNF game going into the season, and compared them with <a href="http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/playoffodds">the current Football Outsiders expected win total projections</a>.
Las Vegas win totals is generally not a good predictive metric, but it does give you a sense of perception. Since we're trying to see how the general quality of MNF matchups compares with what people thought in the preseason, Vegas win totals is useful.
It turns out that a number of MNF games that looked great in the preseason are actually stinkers. In general, the MNF slate is worse than expected.
For example, the combined expected Vegas win total for the Giants-Vikings game before the season was 16.5 wins. Now, those teams are projected to win a combined 8.3 games.
Here's the total breakdown of MNF game quality vs. expectations:

<li>Much worse than expected (-5.0 expected wins): 1 game</li>
<li>Worse than expected (-2.0 expected wins): 6 games</li>
<li>As expected (between -1.9 and 1.9 expected wins): 8 games</li>
<li>Better than expected (+2.0 expected wins): 2 games</li>
<li>Much better than expected (+5.0 expected wins): 0 games</li>
</ul>
In addition, MNF is only projected to air one game between two 10-win teams all year (Seahawks-Saints in Week 13).
The three games that went down the most in quality:

<li>Vikings-Giants, Week 7: -8.2 combined wins (16.5 preseason expected wins vs. 8.3 current expected wins)</li>
<li>Dolphins-Bucs, Week 10: -4.8 combined wins (15.5 preseason expected wins vs. 10.7 current expected wins)</li>
<li>Falcons-49ers, Week 16: -4.3 combined wins (21.0 preseason expected wins vs. 16.7 current expected wins)</li>
</ul>
The three games that went up the most in quality:
<ul>
<li>Saints-Seahawks, Week 13: +3.8 combined wins (19.5 preseason expected wins vs. 23.2 current expected wins)</li>
<li>Colts-Chargers, Week 6: +3.5 combined wins (16.0 preseason expected wins vs. 19.5 current expected wins)</li>
<li>Cowboys-Bears, Week 14: +1.6 combined wins (17.0 preseason expected wins vs. 18.6 current expected wins)</li>
</ul>
The games that got worse got much worse, and the games that got better only got a little bit better.
This is really unlucky for ESPN. As we mentioned before, the ratings are still high, but they're not BONKERS. When you're paying $1.8 billion per year for 17 games, you'd hope that you get a handful of truly marquee matchups.
Instead the quality of MNF matchups is lower than we thought it'd be going into the year.

ESPN Got Incredibly Unlucky With Its $1.8 Billion Monday Night Football Schedule

The main point: Even if all 13 players on the top basketball teams were paid above market value ($500,000 per year), the programs would still be wildly profitable.
Let's take that a step further.
<a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissmith/2013/03/18/louisville-cardinals-lead-the-list-of-college-basketballs-most-valuable-teams/">According to Forbes</a>, seven schools made more than $12.4 million in profit off their basketball teams last year. Of those seven, four (Louisville, Kentucky, UNC, and Kansas) made $19.9 million or more in profit.
The average NBA team made $11.89 million in profit last year, according to <a href="http://www.forbes.com/nba-valuations/#page:1_sort:6_direction:desc_search:">the annual Forbes list of team valuations</a>.
This really isn't a fair comparison. NBA teams have to give 50% of total revenue to players. Kobe Bryant alone makes more money in salary (~$30 million) than the most lucrative basketball team made in profit (~$24.6 million).
But as a thought exercise, let's say the country's biggest, most profitable college hoops teams started <keyword id="1890147" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Paying-Players">paying players</keyword> $500,000 per year (way more than anyone is talking about right now, mind you).
Here's what the four top schools would make:
<ol>
<li>Louisville, $18.1 million</li>
<li>Kansas, $13.4 million</li>
<li>UNC, $13.4 million</li>
<li>Kentucky, $13.4 million</li>
</ol>
They'd all still be making more profit than the Clippers and Mavericks, and Louisville would be making more than the Heat.
This is a pretty elementary analysis. But the point is that these schools are making tons of money because of free labor.

The 4 Biggest College Basketball Schools Could Pay Players $500,000 And Still Be More Profitable Than The Average NBA Team

Now we know why.
Sporting Intelligence has <a href="http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2013/09/16/revealed-asia-driving-boom-as-premier-league-foreign-tv-cash-hits-2-23bn-160901/">a report out on the value of the EPL's overseas TV rights deals</a>, and it shows that money is pouring in like never before.
Between 2013 and 2016, the league will make $3.4 billion from foreign broadcast deals. That's a 55% increase compared to the $2.2 billion in overseas TV money the league made between 2010 and 2013, Nick Harris of Sporting Intelligence reports.
Asia is the big driving force with $1.4 billion in region-wide deals, a huge 77% increase from 2010-2013.
Southeast Asia is mad about the EPL. Teams like Liverpool and Arsenal take summer tours there every year, and that popularity is now translating into real revenue. The countries with the biggest deals:

<li>Singapore ($297 million)</li>
<li>Hong Kong ($200 million)</li>
<li>Malaysia ($200 million)</li>

In general, clubs try to balance their books during the transfer window - selling one player and using that money on another.
But the coming injection of overseas cash has allowed clubs to spend big without having to turn around and sell other players.

On average, NBA players make $5.15 million, MLB players make $3.2 million, NHL players make $2.4 million, and NFL players make $1.9 million per year, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/monteburke/2012/12/07/average-player-salaries-in-the-four-major-american-sports-leagues/">according to Forbes</a>.
But that doesn't even tell the full story.
Andrew Powell-Morse and Brett Cohen at BestTicketsBlog <a href="http://www.besttickets.com/blog/unofficial-2013-nfl-census/">put together two charts</a> that reveal how few NFL players are making real money.
In short, the average NFL salary doesn't spike until most players are out of the league.
70% of NFL players are between the ages of 22 and 27. Players in that group earn less than the NFL average overall.
